This week, Pastor Jim Ellis continues our "Journey Through Scripture" series with a second message from Deuteronomy 6:4-9, often referred to as the Shema. In this passage, we are called to love God with every part of our being. Jesus builds upon this commandment in Matthew 22:34-40, introducing the second great commandment: to love our neighbors as ourselves. Together, these two commands form the foundation of all the law: to love God and love our neighbors. #bismarck #church #BismarckCommunityChurch #BCC #JimEllis #Gospel #JourneyThroughScripture #ReadBible #unity #Deuteronomy #Shema #LoveGod #Leviticus #LoveNeighbor #GreatestCommandment #SecondGreatestCommandmentSupport the showFind out more about us at BismarckCC.org. Tuesday is Election Day. Some things may change, but our mission as Christians will not. We will still be called to “a more perfect union.” No matter what happens, we are going to get up the next day and feed the hungry, clothe the naked, bring comfort to those who need it. We're going to wake up and keep loving God with everything we've got. Mark 12:28-34 fmhouston.com

Paradigm for Politics, Pt I - Worship, Love Neighbor, Image of God, Wisdom, Justice, Speech It's pretty common, in our charged political environment, to see people using strong, harsh and even demeaning language toward those they disagree with politically. But what gets lost in the vitriol and name-calling is that the very things we fear at a broad, societal level - collapse, violence, destruction - is actually rooted in the posture we choose to take toward one another (and toward those on the other side of the political aisle) in the person, intimate level. It begins with the choice between dishonoring or dignifying those with whom we disagree, between loathing our enemies or loving our enemies. And the Bible is clear - if you claim to love God, and hate your brother or your sister, you're lying and kidding yourself. Enter, the invitation of Jesus, to extend undeserved love to others just as you have been extended undeserved love by God Himself. And in doing so, we bring about a very different sort of Kingdom: the Kingdom of God Himself. SPEAKERS: Jay Kim (Saratoga), video (South Hills) Bible Passage(s): 1 John 4:19-21 NIV

In this at times humorous, but always heartfelt (and honest) reflection, Fred brings our "Hearing God's Voice" series to a close by sharing some insights from the story of Balaam and his talking... @$$... er... eh... donkey. What can we learn about the Christian life, hearing the Lord's voice and the importance of relationships? Listen to find out! You can read the story of Balaam in: Num 22:22-35 Matt 22:36-40 Love God. Love Neighbor 1 John 4:20 Love of God and love of neighbor go hand in hand. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (Jn 13:34-35) No greater love: John 15:12-13 Thes 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up… Eph 4:29 Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for edifying, as fits the occasion, that it may impart grace to those who hear. Heb 3:12-13 Take care, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Heb 10:23-24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Gal 6:2 “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” What is that law? Love God. Love neighbor. Prov 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Luke 10: "Love is the only door out of the dungeon of self." (George MacDonald). Welcome & love of neighbor don't happen by accident, either does neglect or refusal of neighbor. We have to do the work of welcome & love of neighbor, and it takes intention, and it costs us something to be a neighbor. Beloved. We are at an apex in our discipleship discussion and we are now going to go deeper. What does that mean? We need to talk candidly about our prejudicial attitudes, ungodly biases, and unhealthy preferences. We all have them. The question is two-fold: 1) Are we willing to admit it? and 2) Are we willing to confess it before the Lord and allow Him to free us from them? Are we ready to be honest? Do you have the time to look your faults in the face and address them? Let's go...
SERMON | Matthew 22:36-40 - "LOVE GOD, LOVE NEIGHBOR" Annual Conference Report by Janet Werle, Elizabeth Hardy, and Connie Schlieker at Sellersburg United Methodist Church in Sellersburg, Indiana
When asked what was most central to obeying God, Jesus answered with one command, and two objects of that command. In this order: Love God, Love your neighbor. But what is this love? How do we do that? And how will we measure up?
