Oftentimes people think [a call to vocation] really needs to be this kind of dramatic, you know, falling on your knees and having this light from heaven, you know, like Saul on the way to Damascus... But I think that the more common way that it happens is that it's an understanding a desire that is within you that that is a holy desire, to be coming from God. -Fr. James Martin, SJ Fr. Join us in this One on One interview with Robert Ellsberg and author, James Martin, SJ, as they discuss "This Our Exile".https://maryknoll.link/5d0813Seamlessly combining spiritual writing, reportage, travel narrative, humor, and recent history, bestselling author James Martin recalls his time as a young Jesuit working with the refugees in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Drawing on his previous experience in the business world, he imagined that he had much to teach the refugees. But they would end up teaching him much more about life, about survival and faith, and about love and friendship. With stories that are by turns frankly incredible, darkly comic, inspirational, tragic, and always provocative, this compelling work is a wonderfully realized tribute to our shared humanity.

In this episode, Father James Martin and I have a great conversation around the story of Lazarus and the implications of it for our life. We talk through disappointments, how Jesus weeps with us through our sorrows, brings new life, and invites us into a participatory life of helping free other people. Join us as we navigate waiting for God to act as we remember what God has done for us in the past. Since we are talking about the story of Lazarus, you might want you to read the story from the Gospel of John before we get into the conversation.
A conversation co-sponsored by the Garaventa Center, Office of Student Affairs, OIEDI, and Campus Ministry. Fr, Martin answered several questions from the UP community arising from his book Building a Bridge.

I wanted it to be deeper than just a rant on the LGBTQ trying to take over the month. I'm talking about the person that is LIVING the lifestyle the LGBTQ communities. Natural Law issues - too frequently we allow ourselves to be assigned a specific role from our enemies. We are only feeding into the image. HEADLINE: On Loving and Hating in June: the Sacred Heart vs. Depraved ‘Pride' by Brother Andre Marie You give them some pushback in certain situations. It should go without saying — but I will say it anyway — that everyone has a claim on our Christian charity and justice. What is under scrutiny here is the disingenuous claim that a highly successful and aggressive lobby, united by nothing other than a shared vice and its attendant agenda, can demand acceptance based upon specifically Christian principles of charity and justice. This inversion of Christian principles is tantamount to weaponizing the Gospel against itself. BANK Example - HEADLINE: The Jesuit Parish of Saint Ignatius of Loyola Promotes Vicious ‘Pride' by Brother Andre Marie James Martin SJ wrote a lengthy Nice isn't part of the Gospel. Charity has NOTHING to do with being nice. GUEST: This week we welcome best-selling author, and editor of America Magazine, and Chaplain to the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Fr. James Martin SJ. His new book, LEARNING TO PRAY (2021) is a helpful guide for all who struggle with prayer. We discuss the new book, his older writings, LGBTQ Rights, the faithful witness of Stephen Colbert and President Joe Biden and so much more. Prayer is one of the pillars of Lenten spirituality. But it’s hard, right? We’re constantly tempted to ask, “Am I doing this right? Am I doing this enough? Is it even working?” Prayer is so foundational to our lives as Christians and yet at the same time feels somewhat mysterious. We might even convince ourselves it’s just not worth the effort. Fortunately, today’s guest has some experience in prayer. And he’s familiar with these very struggles – these temptations to throw in the towel and assume praying is better left to someone else. That’s why he wrote a new book: Learning to Pray: A Guide for Everyone. Today, Fr. James Martin, SJ, returns to AMDG to kick off the Lenten season, to give us a little insight into prayer and to offer us a word of encouragement in our own spiritual lives.
In this week’s episode of “Now & Then”, New York Times best-selling author Father James Martin explains what prayer is, how it can transform us, and invites us to connect with a God we don’t understand. * EPISODE PAGE: https://henrinouwen.org/now-then-james-martin/ * TO PURCHASE "Learning to Pray" by James Martin: Amazon USA: https://amzn.to/373XHoS Amazon Canda: https://amzn.to/3pcNb4R * LISTEN on iTUNES: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/henrinouwensociety/id1468489942?ign-mpt=uo%3D4 * LISTEN on SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Cxu6BwtNHlzFT7RzlixWJ?si=hrkdfJabQByMNEdJTCw8wQ * WATCH the PODCAST on YOUTUBE: https://youtu.be/iGETCIiZIqs * TO SIGN-UP FOR FREE DAILY E-MEDITATIONS: henrinouwen.org/resources/daily-meditation/ * MORE FREE RESOURCES: www.henrinouwen.org * READ HENRI NOUWEN: henrinouwen.org/read-nouwen/

Today’s guest is one of our country’s best-known progressive voices in the Catholic church — freshly home from the Vatican, where he received a private audience with Pope Francis to discuss his growing ministry to LGBTQ Catholics. He came to the priesthood after rejecting a life in corporate America; found himself the go-to “Resident Chaplain” on the Colbert Report; and is the author of several best-selling books, the editor-at-large for America Magazine, and is a widely followed commentator on national and international news. Join us for an insightful, funny, and inspiring conversation with Father Jim Martin. A couple of disclaimers about our interview. Nothing about this conversation is meant to be exclusive of other faith traditions. While Father Jim and I share stories and insights that are Christ-focused, we joyfully support and honor all faiths. And while we engage in a dialogue about various aspects of the Catholic Church’s teachings, we do not use this interview to acknowledge a history of the Church’s many failings beyond the LGBTQ issues that are the focus of this episode. Speaking for Soul Force Politics, I want to clarify that not talking about it does not mean we do not see or acknowledge the Church’s shortcomings on a variety of issues that range from discrimination against women, contributions to the annihilation of tribal culture and forced assimilation, and sexual abuse of children just to name a few. The Church is a human institution, and as such, is just as flawed as it is beautiful. Podcast Episodes | Soul Force Politics
You might think of this penultimate week in October as the time to buy Halloween candy before the good stuff is gone, but here at the Jesuit Conference we are celebrating the first-ever #ExamenWeek: We’re taking a few days to feature the daily examen prayer practice, a signature element of Ignatian spirituality that Jesuits have been praying since the days of St. Ignatius himself. The daily examen is a practical, contemplative prayer tradition that helps people find God amid their day-to-day experiences, and you don’t have to be a Jesuit to try it. Our guest is Fr. Jim Martin, the widely published Jesuit priest, social media evangelizer and the host of a daily examen podcast produced by America Media. He’s been a Jesuit for 30 years, which is almost 11,000 daily examens, so it’s safe to say he’s an expert on the topic. Fr. Jim also talked to host Mike Jordan Laskey about his recent visit to Rome, where Fr. Jim had a private audience with Pope Francis to discuss his ministry of welcome to LGBT people. Be sure to check out #ExamenWeek on social media for more great resources to help you incorporate the daily examen into your own life. The Examen with Fr. This is a special re-broadcast of our episode from April, 2018.Just as the Advent season prepares us for the Incarnation, and the Lenten season prepares us for the Resurrection, we know that the celebration of the Easter season prepares us for Commissioning: “Go, make disciples of all nations.” The Gospel readings of this season serve as a primer in discipleship: the model of the Good Shepherd, the vines bearing much fruit, the command to love one another as Christ has loved us. Yet, though it is, indeed, Good News, spreading the Gospel is hard work! There are many barriers in our way: limits of time and resources, an unfriendly or inhospitable popular culture, and – sometimes the biggest barrier of all – ourselves. In today’s episode, we explore the topic of evangelization – how do we in pastoral ministry reach beyond those already active and in attendance? What works? What doesn’t? What mindset must we cultivate in order to be successful? We’ll also discuss two subsidiary topics: maintaining healthy balance, and navigating the culture wars being waged within the Church. To do so, we’ll hear from two people renowned for their efforts at evangelization: Fr. James Martin, SJ, and Jean Vanier.
Fr. Jim says, "Slow down, notice, give thanks."
February 3, 2019 Rev. Michael R Palmer An important note: After concluding my sermon, I realized I made a mistake and did not give the name or book from which shaped my conclusion on "five practical ways to love." I wanted to be sure to cite them here. If you'd like to read more, check out "A Jesuit's Guide To (Almost) Everything" by Fr. James Martin SJ. The cited portion can be found on pages 227-230.
Fr. Dan and David have a candid conversation about solidarity with LGBTQI persons both inside and outside the Church, and they welcome Fr. Jim Martin to talk about his experiences of ministry among these communities.
Fr. James Martin, SJ is the author of numerous books as well as an editor at America magazine. A Jesuit priest, Fr. James has emerged as one of the leading voices for Ignatian spirituality — and Catholicism in general — for our time. He has also become a lightning rod for some segments of the Catholic world — his gentle call for greater dialogue between the Catholic Church and LGBT Catholics has led to social media attacks along with calls for boycotts and cancellations of Fr. Martin's speaking engagements. Yet he himself remains undeterred, seeking to be a voice for hope and reconciliation in our troubled world. "We've developed this culture of noise and distraction so much, that when people are alone with their thoughts or alone with silence, it's frightening." — James Martin, SJ The Encountering Silence team met Fr. James Martin when he presided at a Mass for a Pax Romana meeting in New York last December that the three of us attended. Several weeks later the four of us gathered via Skype for a rich conversation exploring the connections between silence, Ignatian spirituality, prayer, spiritual direction, meditation, interspirituality and interfaith dialogue, and how writing (and revising) his book Building a Bridge has made a difference in his own ministry. Fr. James also muses on the essential connections between silence, relationship, and God — and how silence and prayer can help us to overcome fear of "the other." Our phones — a friend of mine the other day called them "weapons of mass distraction." — James Martin, SJ Incidentally, when we recorded this episode, the release date for the paperback edition of Building a Bridge was scheduled for March 13, 2018. We've been hard at work preparing a new prayer podcast for this coming Lenten Season. The examen is an ancient prayer practice that enables you to find God in your daily life. Our podcast is based on a technique that St. Ignatius Loyola outlined in the "Spiritual Exercises," his classic manual for prayer. Each week Fr. Martin will provide you with a new reflection and guide you through the examen prayer.
