In this episode, we're joined by Jeremy Treat, pastor for preaching and vision at Reality LA and author of the new book, On the Incarnation: The Good News of Jesus for the Renewal of the World. Drawing from the brilliance of Athanasius—an early church father who defended the full divinity of Christ—Treat makes ancient theology come alive for modern readers. We explore how Athanasius's Christ-centered theology speaks to the cosmic scope of salvation, the brokenness of our world, and the beauty of Jesus's incarnation. Jeremy also shares how theology and pastoral ministry intersect in his own life, and why recovering the early church's voice matters today. Buy the Book: On the Incarnation: The Good News of Jesus for the Renewal of the World Whether you're new to church history or looking to go deeper into the Incarnation, this episode will help you see why the theology of Athanasius still matters—and why Jesus didn't just save souls, but came to renew everything. In this open and candid episode of the Expositors Collective podcast, Danijiel Zaharjanski shares his remarkable journey of being called by God to remain and serve in his homeland of Serbia, despite his initial plans to leave. Danijiel recounts how he and his wife, Wendy, planted a church in the city of Kragujevac, Central Serbia, where they've been living since 2012. Their church is one of only a very small handful of Protestant congregations south of the Danube River, which drives their mission to plant even more churches in the surrounding towns and villages in this under-reached region. The conversation explores Danijiel's reflections on American preachers, offering unique insights into cultural differences in preaching styles. More profoundly, Danijiel discusses the harsh reality that bad preaching and misguided theology can cause genuine harm to people's lives. His reflections highlight the importance of sound, gospel-centered preaching in ministry, particularly in a place where spiritual needs are great. Danijiel, Wendy, and their son, Tadija, continue their faithful work in Serbia, helping to bring the gospel to a region that desperately needs it. In this episode, we welcome Jeremy Treat to the show. He is the pastor for preaching and vision at Reality LA in Los Angeles, CA, the author of several books, and an adjunct professor of theology at Biola University. Professor. He has written several books on the atonement, to include his newest book called The Atonement: An Introduction. That book is part of Crossway's Short Studies in Systematic Theology series which is designed to equip the church to faithfully understand, love, teach, and apply what God has revealed in Scripture about a variety of theological topics. In this interview, we discuss how he went from growing up in Alaska to becoming a pastor in Hollywood, how the work of C.S. Lewis fed his hunger for theology, why he has such a deep fascination with the atoning work of Christ on the cross, what most Christians actually get wrong about the atonement, why the word “theology” scares people, how wrath and shame shape our lives, how we cannot simply “unhitch” the Old and New Testaments, why churches that don't preach the Gospel of Christ are so dangerous, and much more. Support The Becket Cook Show on Patreon! In today's episode, Becket chats with his pastor, Dr. Jeremy Treat, about his new book on the atonement. You'll be surprised and edified by this one. The atonement is central to Christian theology and essential for following Jesus. In this addition to the Short Studies in Systematic Theology series, pastor Jeremy Treat explains what Scripture teaches about the atonement and how it impacts one's daily life. Treat demonstrates that the death of Christ is a multi-dimensional work within the story of the kingdom of God. While the accomplishments of the cross are unending (including forgiveness, victory, and renewal), the heart of the cross is substitution―Jesus dying on behalf of sinners. Christ's atoning work reconciles believers to God and to one another, calling them to a life of obedience. This book presents a kingdom-framed, substitution-centered, Trinitarian, integrated, communal, and life-changing approach to the doctrine of atonement. Jeremy Treat, pastor at Reality LA in Los Angeles, observes how our longing for God does not disappear in a secular society. It just reappears in different forms: sports, politics, sexuality, and more. Treat describes how secular people today seek power, purity, and peace—traditionally sought in religion—in things like witchcraft, wellness, and mindfulness apps. Yet our deepest longings, Treat says, will not be found in any spiritual system or clean diet, but in a person: Jesus Christ.

More deets on the episode: How does Jeremy define the term “codependency?” Taking care of other people while sacrificing your relationship with yourself. He offers how codependency is one side of a spectrum that includes independence, interdependence, and codependence and highlights how, depending on the relationship, we may lean more towards codependent behaviors. And what about Jeremy's perception of “interdependence?” He encourages us to ask ourselves ‘how do I maintain myself as a complete person while being with another?' and remember that, when in a relationship, there are two individuals that make the sum greater than it's parts. We move on to hear about Jeremy's work with couples using The Gottman Method, a form of couples therapy created by John and Julie Gottman. Like building a house, the Gottman's argue that relationships must have a strong foundation made up of friendship and healthy conflict. Jeremy educates us on the criticism-defensiveness cycle and ways that codependents get stuck in these patterns with others, especially partners. He details the four horseman in conflict: criticism, defensiveness, stonewalling, and contempt. We explore how codependents, due to our avoidance of conflict, often become contemptuous with partners. He should just know what I want, right? We conclude with advice from Jeremy on how he helps couples break these codependent patterns: being able to articulate their thoughts, feelings, wants, and needs and via LISTENING. Travis & Jeremy continue their discussion on what its like pastoring in LA and how the Kingdom of God shapes everything about how we see the world. We subscribe more than a lifeboat theology whereby we simply seek to save people out of the world (although that is a big part of it!), but it is looking at all of life through the lens of what it means to be a Christ-follower -- how do we view such things as beauty, race, culture, etc? Do they even have a place in the worldview of a Christian? Listen in and find out!
Travis & Jeremy discuss the Clippers, postmodernism, multi-ethnic theologians, and how discipleship differs in different regions of the United States, specifically Hollywood.
Today’s episode is on the Crucifixion and atoning work of Jesus as the story unfolds in Mark 15. We also take short dives into theories of atonement and the theological significance of the supernatural darkness (v. 33), the temple curtain being torn in two (v. 38), Mark’s connections to the Transfiguration, and Jesus being the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53. Additionally, we add some points about how Christians can speak to the trustworthiness of Mark’s story with regard to the Crucifixion and Resurrection. *episode title inspired by & many ideas learned from Jeremy Treat’s The Crucified King Radically Normal YouTube // IG: @radicallynormalpod // Email: radicallynormalpod@gmail.com // Send us prayer requests or Q&A questions for the end of season 2!

Today's conversation is so important to me. The way we talk about health and nutrition is key to healing our relationships with food. So Jackie and I are practicing! Imagine sitting with us at the dinner table, challenging one another to say what we mean when talking about health habits...I believe if we steep our health conversations in honoring language, they have the power to help us actually change! Linkables discussed in this episode: Trader Joe's tulip bulbs. Webster's definition of gluttony.Jeremy Treat's sermon on fasting and feasting. Special thanks to Amy Van Vlear for original design and Jonathan Byram for original music! What do you think? Do you think using honoring language is important? Let us know how you've seen points from today's conversation play out in your own life! Leave a comment, send us a question, or find me over on Instagram @ifeelsupernourished.
