I am re-releasing my 2018 conversation with Anna Msowoya Keys, to highlight Anna and the incredible work she continues to do through Maloto, the non-profit, community based program to feed, educate and empower the children and women of Malawi, Africa. The community of Mzuzu, in particular, was devastated by the AIDS epidemic in the early 2000s, when Anna was first compelled to respond to the hunger of orphaned children. I volunteered with Maloto for 2 weeks in 2013 with 4 friends and we experienced, first-hand Anna's powerful dedication and the widespread positive impact she has made. All the incredible people Anna has gathered to support her keeps expanding, so more and more lives are enriched. I was delighted to recently bump into Anna and her husband, John Keys just after Maloto's annual NYC Gala last month, which inspired me to once again shine light on her important, meaningful work. I marvel at all the ways Maloto continues to develop and grow. In fact, my cousin, Josh Finn, who was also a guest on my podcast, and the master artisan who has designed and built exquisite furniture all over our home, is in Malawi now, overseeing the woodworking vocational program he started for the teens and young adults. Here's to honoring Anna and her dream team! Check out the links below for Maloto's website and Josh's project. Enjoy the podcast! I can't believe we've waited this long to meet Chad. If you adventure in Maloto, you need to know this one simple trick.
My guest today is Josh Finn. Josh is a gifted furniture maker, business owner, and humble advocate for bringing woodworking skills to vulnerable youth. I am proud to be related to Josh, he is my first cousin. We have hired him to build furniture in 3 rooms of our home, each project an artistic masterpiece with the essence of Josh’s soul infused in all his work. Influenced by his father, who had been a sculptor and taken the family to museums and cathedrals, Josh resonated with the elegant simplicity of the Shakers. In his early 20s, Josh worked for a furniture maker in Scotland and a cabinet maker in Brooklyn, NY before opening up his own shop in upstate New York 20 years ago. Last summer Josh spent 3 weeks in Malawi, Africa helping to create a trade school for Mzuzu International Academy, one of the educational programs sponsored by Maloto, the non-profit organization that feeds, educates, and empowers those affected by the AIDS epidemic in Malawi. This disease had wiped out a generation of caregivers, teachers, and community leaders; and left thousands of children orphaned. (Listen to my episode with Maloto Founder, Anna Msowoya-Keys to hear more about her organization). Josh lay the foundation for a vocational program by teaching woodworking and furniture making skills to 12 engaged youth and plans to return to Malawi this summer for 6 weeks. Josh honesty speaks of his dyslexia and learning issues; appreciating his beloved wife’s gift as a speech therapist who understands how his brain works. He honors his mother, who was the first to believe in him, as he is very present to her as she ages; describing that it is easy and joyful to have her such a close part of his life. Check out the show notes below for Josh’s website, email address and be inspired to hire Josh for your furniture needs. You’ll also find links to Josh’s Go Fund Me page, where you can support his transformative efforts with the youth of Malawi. Enjoy the podcast! My guest today is Shawna Emerick. Shawna is a dancer, gifted yoga teacher, retreat leader, and although we didn’t talk about it in this conversation, she is also a Thai massage practitioner and life coach. We first met dancing together in the performance company Moving Mantras, which blended modern dance and yoga. I soon discovered Shawna’s unique gifts as an outstanding yoga teacher. She utilizes her knowledge of anatomy, with verbal cues that are expressed like poetry, she embraces yoga philosophy, while modeling vulnerability and authenticity, she blends a childlike curiosity with her mature spiritual groundedness, making Shawna one of my all time favorite teachers. Shawna was a treasured participant in a group I ran 6 years ago, called “Cultivating Sacred Activists” which culminated in a 2 week volunteer trip to Malawi, Africa to support Anna Msowoya-Keys’s organization Maloto, which addresses the needs of AIDS orphans. (Please check out Anna’s podcast conversation with me - episode #9 in your podcast feed). Shawna beautifully describes what that experience meant to her. Soon after our return, her boyfriend Geoffrey proposed to Shawna - I guess distance DOES makes the heart grow fonder! She lists all that she admires and loves in Geoffrey and what it has been like to raise their sweet 3 year old, son Max. Shawna openly shares the heartache from her miscarriage, having discovered that miscarriages are one of life’s silent sufferers. She has bonded with other women and found great supports in the grieving and healing process. I know you will be inspired by Shawna’s empathy and wisdom. Enjoy the podcast! For February's Black History Month we are featuring 4 amazing African-American women. This week's guest is Anna Msowoya Keys, a humanitarian entrepreneur and community organizer. She began her career as an advocate for women and children in African conflict areas, first through Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and then with International Refugee Committee (IRC), that took her to Burundi, Rwanda, Mozambique and Malawi. She witnessed the heart-wrenching turmoil and crisis during the genocide in Rwanda. She eventually dated her best friend and colleague at IRC, John Keys, who later became her beloved husband. After Anna and John married, Anna left her African homeland and moved to the United States - something she had not imagined she would ever do. Anna opened the unique shop Chibekeni, in her new community of Nyack, NY, which showcased beautiful handmade works from African artisans. The shop helped Anna bridge her African roots with her new American home. Chibekini allowed Anna to raise funds for her home country Malawi, as the AIDS epidemic wiped out a whole generation of young parents, leaving thousands of children orphaned. Four of Anna's sisters died of AIDS, compelling Anna and John to take financial responsibility for the education of 10 of her nieces and nephews. Anna shares the story of attending her fourth sister's funeral, where many children she didn't know arrived. She discovered that these children were orphans and showed up because they were starving and they knew there would be food at a funeral. That inspired the beginning of Maloto, a non-profit, community based organization that started out feeding a meal to 20 children once a week, and now feeds 350 children a warm, nutritious meal 3 times a week. Maloto has expanded to include after-school programs, an early childhood class, a primary school and an international secondary academy. Having just celebrated its 10 year anniversary, Maloto's mission is to feed, educate and empower the children and women of Malawi. Anna expresses her deep gratitude for the support of her Nyack community, as well as people like the NBC broadcaster Tom Brokaw and his wife Meredith Brokaw, who have served on her board of directors and devoted time, resources and love to support Anna's vision. Jodi Nelson is the director of Strategy, Measurement & Evaluation at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Committed to helping the foundation maximize its results, the Strategy, Measurement & Evaluation (SME) team is responsible for the organization’s strategy development and review process and its overall approach to measurement and evaluation. SME leads efforts to integrate results-based planning into the foundation’s grant making and operations; develop a strong, organization-wide M&E Community of Practice; conduct independent evaluations of the foundation’s most important investments; and provide teams and leadership with access to relevant data for learning and decision-making. Prior to joining the foundation, Jodi was the director of Research and Evaluation at the International Rescue Committee. There for almost ten years, Jodi created two new initiatives to improve the organization’s measurement system. In 2003, Jodi raised private funds to launch a three year effort to bridge the gap between academic research and IRC’s field program implementation. Jodi advocated for and founded a department dedicated to research and evaluation. As its director, Jodi strengthened the agency’s program design capacity; streamlined data collection and analysis across country offices; and built capacity for the use of rigorous evaluation for learning and decision-making. This included partnering with bilateral organizations and university scholars to evaluate post-conflict development models in settings such as Liberia, DR Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Burundi and Afghanistan. Jodi worked before this at several nonprofit organizations with international missions, including the Asia Society, the Society for International Development, the World Resources Institute, and the Committee for Economic Development. She has taught graduate courses on international development and evaluation at Princeton University and New York University. Jodi has a doctorate in Political Science from Columbia University with a concentration in political economy, and a Bachelor’s from Northwestern University. Jodi was a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations from 2000-2007, and currently serves on the board of Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), the Antelope Foundation and Maloto, an innovative nonprofit organization committed to youth in Malawi.
