Tanner Guzy: Decoding Masculine Style and Leadership—Transforming Confidence Through Purposeful Personal Image

The Essential 11

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 23, 2025 69:42

Clothing has always been more than just fabric—it's a statement, a reflection of who someone is before they even open their mouth. In a time when masculinity feels constantly debated and redefined, style becomes a way to take control of that narrative. It's not about chasing trends or dressing to impress others; it's about wearing something that aligns with confidence, purpose, and self-respect. The right look doesn't just turn heads—it reinforces who you are and how you carry yourself in the world.Tanner Guzy, a men's style expert and author, teaches men how to use clothing as a form of self-expression. Through his book The Appearance of Power and his platform Masculine Style, he explores the psychology behind personal style. A father of seven, boxer, and coach, he emphasizes intentionality in both appearance and personal growth. Today, he speaks about how style influences leadership and identity, showing that dressing well isn't just about fashion—it's about confidence and purpose. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond!Quotes: “From a parenting perspective, more is caught than taught. If I want my kids to challenge themselves, take on hard tasks, and step out of their comfort zones, it won't matter how often I tell them to do so if they don't see me doing the same.'” – Tanner Guzy“I teach men to use their clothing and appearance as a visual language, helping them become as articulate with their style as they are with their words and writing.” – Tanner Guzy“Bad men use their appearance to deceive others about who they are. Weak men use it to conceal who they are. But the ultimate goal is to live a life that genuinely reflects who you are.” – Tanner Guzy“We often get lost by focusing on how we look, how we're addressed, and how we signal to others. But it's much more about reinforcing who I am. It's not just about being physically comfortable—though that's important—but also about achieving psychological comfort.” – Matt BeaudreauTakeaways:Spend 30 minutes analyzing your current wardrobe and identify one piece that truly represents your authentic self, then replace something that feels inauthentic or disconnected from your identity.Practice giving genuine, specific compliments about style to three different people this week - men or women - to build social confidence and awareness.Reflect on your personal archetypes by taking Tanner's style quiz and understanding how your clothing can signal your internal values and aspirations.Challenge yourself to incrementally upgrade one aspect of your appearance each month, focusing on psychological comfort over trend-chasing.Create a mood board or digital collection of style inspirations from people you respect in your professional or personal spheres, identifying what specific elements resonate with your personal growth goals. Conclusion:Personal style is more than just clothing—it reflects confidence, identity, and how one moves through the world. The way we present ourselves can shape first impressions, influence interactions, and even reinforce our own mindset. Dressing with intention isn't about following trends but about aligning outward appearance with inner values. When style is approached with purpose, it becomes a tool for both self-expression and personal growth.

Rather than assuming all men know why and how to dress better, he helps them determine their aesthetic choices based on their life goals and how their appearance can help them accomplish those goals.   In this episode, Tanner and I discuss: Why men need to understand how their appearance and style is communicating with others without them saying a word How sytle & fashion has always been a masculine virtue - look at Roman soldiers & gladiators How it's no longer necessary for all men to own a well tailored suit Understanding your style archetype and how this plays into your style and appearance Do's & don'ts for the modern masculine style Dressing as a single man versus a married man And so much more   Connect with Tanner online: Website - https://masculine-style.com/   Book - https://amzn.to/3Zn1439   IG - https://www.instagram.com/tannerguzy/   YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@MasculineStyle   --   Connect with Frank and The Super Human Life on Social Media: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachfrankrich/   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/584284948647477/   Website: http://www.thesuperhumanlifepodcast.com/tshlhome   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjB4UrpxtNO2AFtDURMzoKQ

Tanner Guzy shares his thoughts and answers questions on masculine style and aesthetics. Dress better and become more confident.   Seek Beauty in Your Style Beauty is good. We know this, because we enjoy the transformations that occur with our body as we train and eat better. Wearing good-fitting, appropriate clothing presents a better, more beautiful aesthetic. It helps you build confidence and presents a better version of yourself to the world. Masculine Style - Some Specifics Style doesn't necessarily mean buying expensive clothing and chasing the newest fashions. It means dressing appropriately based on your settings, the image you want to present, and what you're doing. This could mean wearing plain, well-fitted, high-quality t-shirts instead of baggy t-shirts with logos. This could mean tailoring some of your pants or spending some time finding jeans or chinos that fit and continuing to buy those over and over again. Style Linear Progression Like fitness or strength, improving your style is an ongoing process. You don't have to (and really probably cannot effectively) buy a new wardrobe all at once. You might find one or two items first: a t-shirt or jeans or shorts. Ensure they fit and you like them, then you might need to revise something else in your everyday uniform. Start with the big ticket items: the shirt and pants or shorts. Then you might move to shoes. From there, maybe you're looking into the socks, belt, and items you wear less frequently. You also have to realize that you'll learn more as you go, so if you tried to do it at once, you won't understand what you likes, what fits, and what you image you want to convey. Enjoy the process. You're going to make mistakes. That's okay. Keep getting better. GET STARTED with one-on-one online coaching FOR FREE! Get your FIRST MONTH FREE on all strength and nutrition coaching plans. Riding Shotgun With Charlie#152Alex SansoneThe Suited Shootist   At the NRAAM in Houston this year, I got to co-emcee the Concealed Carry Fashion show presented by RealizeFAC with Amanda Sufffecool.  She and I have hosted these all around the country. We use models who are influencers, instructors, and activists in the firearm community. One of the models at NRAAM was Alex Sansone, The Suited Shootist. Amanda said I needed to have him on the show, so after a quick intro back and forth, he said he would be able to make it happen while we were in Houston. We filmed the show on a Sunday morning and there were barely any protesters!   Alex grew up in the DC area with a ‘gun agnostic' family, which only had a shotgun for trap shooting. He did do some .22 rifle shooting during summer camp, but it wasn't a regular thing his family did. September 11, 2001 changed things for his family and his father became interested in firearms for self defense and personal protection. David Yamane calls these folks, myself included, called Gun Culture 2.0. Alex always had an interest in firearms going back to watching Air Force One on VHS and seeing an MP5 sliding across the floor.    During his college years, he became more interested in personal protection, after he noticed that many students didn't have situational awareness. Later he moved to Texas and started working at a gun store and started some training. After a few years of ‘turning ammunition into expensive noise', some friends turned him onto some of the well known trainers, including Massad Ayoob (RSWC #045). Currently, he's got about 400 hours of training under his belt.    After meeting the woman who became his wife, he realized that he needed to start dressing better. He admits that he was the guy you'd see who had an attractive wife and you'd wonder why she was with him.. Alex was ‘that guy' and realized that reflected poorly on his wife. So he made some changes in the way he dressed.    After doing some YouTube research, he found Tanner Guzy who runs Masculine Style. Guzy says there's 3 style archetypes: rugged, refined, and rakish. And at some level, every man is a little of each.  While working a white collar job and wearing only dark suits, he still wanted to carry. Alex discovered that he needed to find a way to be able to carry but not get bigger clothes as is often suggested to folks who carry. Claude Werner (RSWC #086) taught Alex that bigger clothes makes folks you see regularly take a closer look at what you're wearing and gets them thinking that maybe you aren't losing weight, which can also draw attention from them.    At one point while Alex was carrying at work and against company policy and was at a job. He talks about how making the decision to be armed at work vs working and being unarmed isn't always an easy career choice because you still have to work and make money.    All of this led him to being outspoken about this issue and starting a YouTube channel called The Suited Shootist. After a year of writing a blog and someone telling him more than 500 words should be a video, Alex had to learn about video and editing and YouTubing. On the channel, he gets into lots of topics about carrying and making your carry gear disappear and the pros and cons of several methods all while keeping it fashionable and looking good.    I really enjoyed having Alex on the show.  I appreciate that he was able to squeeze in a car ride with a stranger and that I'm able to expand my circle of friends.    Favorite quotes:   “The kids that are just leaving their valuable stuff out…seem to be the ones suffering these consequences.” “A lot of the style influencers were not delving too deeply into the why's and the how's.” “I've been in environments where going armed is somewhere between unusual and unacceptable.” “We're going to have to live with the gun a whole lot more than we're going to have to use the gun.”   The Suited Shootist YouTube https://www.youtube.com/c/TheSuitedShootist The Suited Shootist Blog https://thesuitedshootist.home.blog/ The Suited Shootist Facebook https://www.facebook.com/thesuitedshootist/ The Suited Shootist Instagram https://www.instagram.com/the_suited_shootist   Second Amendment Foundation http://saf.org/ Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.  Buy RSWC & GunGram shirts & hoodies, stickers & patches, and mugs at the store! http://ridingshotgunwithcharlie.com/rswc-shop/   Keyhole Holsters  Veteran Owned, American Made http://www.keyholeholsters.com/   Dennis McCurdy Author, Speaker, Firewalker http://www.find-away.com/   Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/   OpsLens App on iPhone & iPad https://apps.apple.com/us/app/opslens-network/id149803345

The way you dress is oftentimes a window into your soul. It's an understanding of your confidence, self-belief, and how you view yourself.  Today's guest is going to give us a little insight into that mindset, and he's going to take it from the men's perspective. So for my female listeners, this isn't a time to turn it off but just know that we're going to dive into an area that most men don't really think about. They assume that somebody can take care of it for them or that the next pair of khakis and blue shirt is going to work for them. This topic is actually one aspect of what I do with the Catalyst School. We dive into the best way to make you the most influential and confident person you can be. Our guest this week is Tanner Guzy, Men's Style Coach, Founder of Masculine Style, and Author of The Appearance of Power. I came across Tanner and his work on social media after seeing some of his tweets about dress and appearance and how they relate to confidence and performance. I've always been fascinated from a male standpoint of identifying the right thing to wear, What is my style? What type of clothing fits my style?  I tend to go to the most conservative, most comfortable way. I'm a big guy, and I just really want clothes that fit. But, I don't think that mindset always allows me to present myself in the best manner possible. When I've done stage work or presented, I tend to fall back on the khaki pants and a jacket, but it's so conservative. And it's like, "Hey, I took the easy way out." Is there something better? The people that I study and love to learn from have a little edgier style. Is that me? I don't know. So I had to bring Tanner on to talk about it. If you want more information about Tanner, make sure you check him out at masculine-style(dot)com or pick up his book, The Appearance of Power. If you want to understand what he means by power - authority, presence, action -  make sure you check out his book. Very easy to read and tons of information about what you need to be wearing and how to identify YOUR style.

Every time I bring up a conversation about style as it relates to masculinity, I'm met with hesitation because, "real men don't care about what they wear." And, while that sounds good to say, it just isn't true. If it were, we'd all walk around naked or a baggy t-shirt and sweat pants everywhere we go. Besides, your style is a powerful tool in building influence, gaining confidence, and creating opportunities for yourself. My guest today is my good friend, Tanner Guzy with Masculine Style. I've learned more from him about what I wear, what it says about me, and how it's perceived by others in the last couple years than I have the rest of my life. And while it's hard to quantify the results dressing well produces, there's no doubt there's a connection between what I look like and my income, confidence, and influence.

SHOWNOTES
The difference between power and appeal How your clothing communicates to others Tactics vs. strategy in what you wear The 3 style archetypes 6 factors to choosing your style How to focus on meaning versus just looking good Where confidence stems from How to improve your style without having to wear a suit How to maintain practically and still look good How to overcome the need for validation in the way you look How to develop and maintain influence with others Why every man should focus on improving his style
TANNER GUZY Gentlemen, my guest today is my friend Tanner Guzy. Tanner and I met years ago. In fact, he was the second guest I ever had on the show. I used to balk at the idea of dressing well because I thought it was more about what's inside a man than what he's wearing. And, while there is validity to that, our style says a lot about who we are. Tanner is a deep thinker (which I appreciate) and goes well beyond how to wear a suit and what shoes go best with what pants. He delves deep into the why and the psychology of what we wear and how it produces results in our lives. And, that's what we're all about here - producing results. And, if I can take learn just one thing about what I wear that will help me in my life, you can bet that I'm going to do it. Tanner is going to show us how.
