In this week's episode, we follow up from our pre-NRA Show pow-wow to a full-blown review and discussion of NRAAM 2025. Today I've brought along Paul B, Mags M, Eugene L, and Kirk F, to talk about what they saw at the show and what they think of all of it. In addition to talking about everything we saw at the show, we also talk a bit about some of the different views we have based on our position within the industry, as well as what we personally hope will happen despite some of the current trends going on in the industry. So sit back, relax, and let us guide you through the best of what we saw at NRAAM 2025 here on TFB's Behind the Gun podcast.
Today we have a special guest to help us with our NRA Annual Meeting after-action. Former and Future NRA Board Member, Isaac Demarest joins us to discuss the current state of the NRA, as well as a number of other topics. During our Tech Talk from EOTech Inc. Professor Paul will address an inquiry about putting a mini red dot on a PCC? We also have a question from the SOTG Mailbag about sighting in handguns. For our SOTG Homeroom from Student of the Gun University, we will consider a mass killing in Canada? How did it happen? Why didn't all the Canadian gun control prevent it? Today we're on the move on the way to NRAAM 2025 in Atlanta Georgia talking to Bryce from The Carry Handle Podcast about what we expect to see at the show this year. The NRA Show or NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits is an open to the public gun show that gives customers and manufacturers a chance to mingle with one another and showcase products, answer questions, and hopefully get questions answered. In stark contrast to other trade shows like SHOT Show, NRAAM also has a pretty hefty political component with prominent speakers such as President Donald Trump making frequent appearances as well as other pro-gun politicians and industry leaders. This year Hop and Luke of TFBTV will be on the scene to cover the latest product releases from all of our favorite manufacturers. For now, sit back, relax and enjoy speculating about what's to come with Luke & Bryce in today's episode. The Carry Handle Podcast on YouTube The Carry Handle Podcast on Spotify

The NRA Annual Meeting and Exhibits are a yearly treat for Luke and Hop. In stark opposition to SHOT Show, which is an entirely industry-focused event, the NRA show is for customers and gun hobbyists. At the NRA Show you'll find loads of firearms accessories for sale, and a bunch of helpful staff from the gun companies both big and small to tell you all about their products, and show you the ins and outs of them. Today Hop and Luke will go over some of their favorite and least favorite things about the NRA Show and their thoughts on some of the new products featured at this year's Texas based NRA Annual Meetings. If you missed out on the NRA Show entirely, Luke & Hop were on the scene this year to cover some of the most popular releases at the show. You can watch those videos below. Join Queen Erinidas alongside Weer'd Beard, Oddball, Xander, and David as they take a stroll to the Hot Gates of the NRA Annual Meeting and discuss: signs at the NRA Annual Meeting that the corruption is still around, but the members are clearly wising up and taking the NRA to task for it;; Donald Trump's speech at NRAAM, which was more of the usual and with minimal talk of gun rights; the possibility of Ronnie Barrett of Barrett Firearms becoming the next NRA Executive Vice President (but the day after recording this we discovered that Barrett didn't win); more tourists arrested in the Turks and Caicos Islands for having a few pieces of ammunition in their luggage;. the 9th Circuit Court striking down Hawaii's butterfly knife ban; firearm prohibitionist politicians turning on the dubious Shot Spotter technology, citing racism; a Federal court issuing a temporary restraining order against the ATF's change in the "Engaging in the Business of Selling Firearms" law; legislation introduced in Congress to remove the $200 tax stamp requirement for SBRs, SBSs, and suppressors; another NFA challenge regarding suppressors that are made in Texas and stay in Texas; another surprising rule by the 9th Circuit, where one judge in three ruled that felons aren't part of "The People"; plus the usual silliness and side-tracking that happens with Round Tables. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #172 Paul Markel Student of the Gun (The Pimp Hand of America) Paul Markel is someone I've heard on Armed American Radio several times. It's always great to hear his stance on anything. He doesn't mince words. He doesn't hold back. And you always know where he stands. A good friend said he would be at NRAAM in Indianapolis this year and at the GLOCK booth. So after an email and an introduction, he said he'd be up for doing the show. Special thanks to Rob & Amanda from Eye On The Target Radio for the use of their “stagecoach” to film the show. We kicked off with Paul explaining that it wasn't a job he was looking for, but a job he accepted, was to be the Pimp Hand of America because “this country needs a slap”. And he's just the man to do it. Paul is very direct and to the point about his stance on topics du jour. Our first topic was the homeless folks on the way to his hotel in Indy. During his youth, Paul spent time running around the yard with a rifle shaped stick. That led to shooting single shot BB guns with his grandfather with a tube of BBs from the local grocery store. Joining the military after his high school love didn't work out, he enlisted as a Marine and spent time on the USS Forrestal. After jungle warfare training they had to change to desert warfare training and he was involved with Desert Storm Part 1. Upon coming home, he needed to find a job. His family knew a police chief and he went into the police academy but found out that 500 men like him were applying for 3 jobs. Back when he was 19, he tried to take an executive protection course. The job required experience, which he didn't have at the time. But after the military, he found he was a good candidate for that line of work, which he did for 13 years. With all this experience, Paul took a job as a military contractor and started teaching small arms and tactics. When the contract starts to wind down, the job looks less and less appealing. While in the Marine Corps, he was a rifle and pistol marksmanship coach and really enjoyed teaching classes. A mentor suggested the old adage about “publish or die” and that led to Paul starting to write back in 1993 when he sold a couple of articles. He eventually started writing for Harris Publication and many other magazines. Writing led to talking to a TV producer and that's how Student of the Gun (SOTG) TV started. Eventually, SOTG ended up on several different TV networks. Producing TV shows takes a lot of work. There's cameras, lighting, audio, editing, and it's all time consuming. What I really like about Paul is that he's a very intellectual man. He's very well read. On the SOTG website there's a suggested reading list of several books and how & where to order them. We talk about 1984, The Rape of the Mind, Brave New World, and Fahrenheit 451. He talks about how going to bodyguard school really helped with him learning to pay attention which has also helped out with the things he studied and learned from the masters and the books mentioned. The job of the bodyguard is to make sure that nothing happens and nothing unexpected happens, which means you also need to know what is normal and what is out of place. I've already started the SOTG book collection by buying Total Resistance by H.Von Dach. I also downloaded The Rape of the Mind in audiobook for some driving adventures coming up. I do like buying books, but I need to read some of them, too, otherwise it's futile. Favorite quotes: “It's the only job you can work and as the years go by, you get paid the same amount or less, for doing the more work.” “A stepping stone in a profession is to be published.” “You destroy the culture. You destroy the language. You destroy the people.” “When everything is a Right, nothing is a Right.” “I don't know if I ever created anything but I sat at the feet of masters and I paid attention.” Student of the Gun Podcast https://studentofthegun.com/podcast/studentofthegunradio/ YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@studentofthegun The Four Pillars of Fighting Book https://www.amazon.com/Four-Pillars-Fighting-James-Yeager-ebook/dp/B0BYRQ5YCD Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. Wildlife officers say he escaped with just a few scratches -- despite the animal actually making contact. According to the victim, he and his wife were relaxing in a hot tub outside a home near Nathrop Saturday night when he felt something grab his head. “He and his wife began screaming and splashing water at the animal. The victim's wife grabbed a flashlight and shined it on the animal, which they then identified as a mountain lion,” Colorado Parks and Wildlife said. “The light and commotion caused the mountain lion to retreat about 20 feet from the couple in the hot tub. They continued to scream at the mountain lion, and after a short time it moved up to the top of a hill near some rocks where it crouched down and continued to watch the couple.” (Click Here for Full Article)
Riding Shotgun With Charlie#152Alex SansoneThe Suited Shootist At the NRAAM in Houston this year, I got to co-emcee the Concealed Carry Fashion show presented by RealizeFAC with Amanda Sufffecool. She and I have hosted these all around the country. We use models who are influencers, instructors, and activists in the firearm community. One of the models at NRAAM was Alex Sansone, The Suited Shootist. Amanda said I needed to have him on the show, so after a quick intro back and forth, he said he would be able to make it happen while we were in Houston. We filmed the show on a Sunday morning and there were barely any protesters! Alex grew up in the DC area with a ‘gun agnostic' family, which only had a shotgun for trap shooting. He did do some .22 rifle shooting during summer camp, but it wasn't a regular thing his family did. September 11, 2001 changed things for his family and his father became interested in firearms for self defense and personal protection. David Yamane calls these folks, myself included, called Gun Culture 2.0. Alex always had an interest in firearms going back to watching Air Force One on VHS and seeing an MP5 sliding across the floor. During his college years, he became more interested in personal protection, after he noticed that many students didn't have situational awareness. Later he moved to Texas and started working at a gun store and started some training. After a few years of ‘turning ammunition into expensive noise', some friends turned him onto some of the well known trainers, including Massad Ayoob (RSWC #045). Currently, he's got about 400 hours of training under his belt. After meeting the woman who became his wife, he realized that he needed to start dressing better. He admits that he was the guy you'd see who had an attractive wife and you'd wonder why she was with him.. Alex was ‘that guy' and realized that reflected poorly on his wife. So he made some changes in the way he dressed. After doing some YouTube research, he found Tanner Guzy who runs Masculine Style. Guzy says there's 3 style archetypes: rugged, refined, and rakish. And at some level, every man is a little of each. While working a white collar job and wearing only dark suits, he still wanted to carry. Alex discovered that he needed to find a way to be able to carry but not get bigger clothes as is often suggested to folks who carry. Claude Werner (RSWC #086) taught Alex that bigger clothes makes folks you see regularly take a closer look at what you're wearing and gets them thinking that maybe you aren't losing weight, which can also draw attention from them. At one point while Alex was carrying at work and against company policy and was at a job. He talks about how making the decision to be armed at work vs working and being unarmed isn't always an easy career choice because you still have to work and make money. All of this led him to being outspoken about this issue and starting a YouTube channel called The Suited Shootist. After a year of writing a blog and someone telling him more than 500 words should be a video, Alex had to learn about video and editing and YouTubing. On the channel, he gets into lots of topics about carrying and making your carry gear disappear and the pros and cons of several methods all while keeping it fashionable and looking good. I really enjoyed having Alex on the show. I appreciate that he was able to squeeze in a car ride with a stranger and that I'm able to expand my circle of friends. Favorite quotes: “The kids that are just leaving their valuable stuff out…seem to be the ones suffering these consequences.” “A lot of the style influencers were not delving too deeply into the why's and the how's.” “I've been in environments where going armed is somewhere between unusual and unacceptable.” “We're going to have to live with the gun a whole lot more than we're going to have to use the gun.” The Suited Shootist YouTube https://www.youtube.com/c/TheSuitedShootist The Suited Shootist Blog https://thesuitedshootist.home.blog/ The Suited Shootist Facebook https://www.facebook.com/thesuitedshootist/ The Suited Shootist Instagram https://www.instagram.com/the_suited_shootist Second Amendment Foundation http://saf.org/ Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. Riding Shotgun With Charlie #149 Santee The Santee TV I know this sounds weird, but I love having some stalkers. OK, they're not real stalkers. But there are some folks who watch the show and are happy to meet me. Santee is one of them. She's been watching the show for a hot minute. She reached out to me after catching shows with Brooke Cheney (RSWC #075) and Jerah Hutchins (RSWC #133). She said the next time I'm in Texas we need to get together. So with the NRA Annual Meetings in Houston, near Santee, we were on. She did have me on her YouTube channel back in January 2022, which you can watch here! https://youtu.be/6vGhbtIXIEA Santee, of course, isn't her real name (you'll have to watch to find out). She became a gun owner after a scary incident like many folks. There were some guys going through her apartment building looking for someone. They passed her sons but they didn't know what was going on. The guys ended up shooting through someone's door in her building. She ended up grabbing a kitchen knife when she heard the shots and went to look for her children. And that's when she decided it was time to get a handgun. She was in the Air Force, but she wasn't really familiar with handguns. All of that needed to change. She needed to be sure that she could protect herself and her children, should something else happen. She took a handgun safety course to get a permit (Texas was not Constitutional carry/permitless carry at the time) and bought her first handgun, which was a Taurus PT111, still her favorite handgun. Getting her first handgun gave her confidence. This is something that everyone goes through on some level. Yes, a firearm isn't a magic talisman and doesn't keep trouble away, but it gives people like single mothers the confidence that they can protect their family from harm. It lets women know that they ARE in control of their safety…and that they're the immediate responders. After the Air Force, Santee ended up becoming a probation officer in Houston. What she finds most rewarding is hopefully getting these folks on the right track and getting their lives together. I've got to hand it to her, that's got to be a tough job! We do talk about the process of getting the carry permit in Texas. Most states that are Constitutional/permitless carry still offer licenses so that their residents can have reciprocity. I am a big fan of training, of course. Even if you aren't required to, it's a darn good idea to learn about the laws in your state especially if you're going to be carrying. We eventually get into raising sons and what could be done to help them. One of the things Santee did is she saw that her sons were spending a lot of time on (The) YouTube. She tried to encourage them to start their own channel for doing some gaming. But she ended up starting a channel to show them that it wasn't as hard as they thought and that anyone can do it. (Even this teacher who became a YouTuber!) After buying ammo at a local gun store and making a video of that, she decided that it was time to start making some range videos. So now she and her husband have started filming range sessions regularly. It does take some planning for each session and video, but that's a fun part. She's got some strong feelings about our Rights and about self defense. I don't think we're that different. We want to have fun, we want to protect our families, and we both want our YouTube channels to grow. So SUBSCRIBE to BOTH of our channels! Favorite quotes: “What am I going to do when I need to take care of me, my children, anything in the apartment?” “What we have a problem with is not gun control, is not the firearms, it is…mental health.” “I have family members that don't like firearms, but they're not like that (NRAAM protestors)” “We don't want to hurt anybody, but we ARE going to protect ourselves.” Timestamp 00:00 Intro 01:21 Santee 02:50 Stalking me 04:06 Missed the Fashion Show 06:05 Getting a gun 08:53 Air Force 11:10 Probation Officer 13:33 Texas permit process 19:19 Shooting out the windows 21:21 NRAAM protestors 23:58 Jerah & Brooke 25:48 Solving the problems 31:36 Back to guns 32:38 Stating a YouTube channel 34:39 Protect ourselves 38:05 Olympic rings 42:25 Closing The Santee TV YouTube https://www.youtube.com/c/santeetv Instagram https://www.instagram.com/thesanteetv/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/santeetv Second Amendment Foundation http://saf.org/ Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/ Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters. This year's NRA (National Rifle Association) Annual Meeting and Exhibits took place over Memorial Day weekend. Firearms manufacturers, advocacy groups, and media alike descended upon the city of Houston Texas for the three-day event. While the mainstream media may have put the firearms media event in a negative light, TFBTV's Hop and TFB's Austin Rex have a more positive take on NRAAM 2022. Join us today as we pontificate about this year's NRA Annual Meetings, and many other things perhaps only tangentially related to NRAAM 2022.
