In conversation with Buddhist nun, scholar, and activist Ven. Karma Lekshe Tsomo, tracing her remarkable arc from surfing in 1950s Malibu to ordination under the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. On hitchhiking through Southeast Asia, surf contests in 1960s Japan, Zen and copying the Heart Sutra. On women's traditions within Buddhist orders, surfing as meditation. On Vipassana, near fatal snake bites, to living with 348 percepts. On navigating the importance of ethics, on consciousness, a critique of secular mindfulness commodification. The importance of debate within Buddhism. On being kind, on Dharamsala, on grief and death, on supernormal powers, advice for finding a teacher, on comparative philosophy, on the current discourse revolving the struggle for Tibet. On the Holiness the Dalai Lama, on perseverance, on the listening to birds, on the current moment. On insight, on death, on the importance of ultimately living for others.Excerpts On SurfingI found surfing quite spiritual because, you're alone out in the ocean. It's quiet. You get a totally different perspective on life because you're not one of the little ants running around. You've got a sort of meta view of human society, which is, quite instructive. On Peace and LoveI'm still trying to figure that out. Especially in the current climate. How do you account for that? It seemed to me that peace and love were the answer and that everyone. If everyone were full of peace and love, then we would have a happy world. And so why? And then, of course, Buddhism was very helpful because it pointed out that it's our self cherishing, it's our obsession with our ourself that messes everything up. People are struggling, clawing and scraping to get their own advantage. And of course, that interferes with all their relationships and destroys their personal happiness. And very few people really figure it out.On FreedomAnd when one of the monks cut my hair, it was the most freeing experience of my life. I saw my hair drop into my lap and I thought, whoa, free at last.On the Dangers of Mindfulness without EthicsYou can kill someone very mindfully. You can rob a bank very mindfully. If you don't have any ethical foundations for your mindfulness practice, it can go all wrong. On ActionBelief is cheap. You can say anything you want and even some of the greatest religious leaders have had doubts apparently, including up to and including Mother Teresa. But how do we live our lives? That's the important thing. How do we try to create happiness for ourselves and others? How do we avoid harming ourselves and others? These are the questions that Buddhism takes up.On Supernormal Powers and Ethical ConductSuper normal powers are no surprise if we train our minds well. Our minds are capable of so much more than we credit them for. These are not the aim of Buddhist practice, but they are, there are many records legends and also texts that document attainments. The descriptions of supernormal powers occur in the very earliest strata. On RealityWe take things to exist as they appear, but we all know that's false. It's an illusion, this desk, it looks so solid. One match it's history, right? It's toast. So the Buddhists are very good at questioning the question, things like appearance and reality. On AwarenessConsciousness is a string of conscious moments, from the moment of conception, it's only one moment back to the last moment of our previous lifetime. If we meditate we can track it back. Every moment is precious. Listen to the birds - remember that human life is impermanent. That our time on this precious planet is limited. That every moment is precious and we should do, try to make the most not waste even a moment. We can gain insight, awakening in this present moment. Community Living Guelph Wellington has been around since 1955 providing support and services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and their families in the communities in which they live, and for the last few years they've faced some serious financial issues. 2024 is no exception, but might the important services of Community Living get lost in the shuffle of all the crushing need out there. This is from an article in the Wellington Advertiser last week: “Community Living Guelph Wellington is facing a $3 million deficit in 2025 and will be closing two of its residential sites to rein in expenses.” That sounds pretty bad, but it sounds even worse when you realize that this is a dance that's happened every fall for the last few years, and that doesn't do a lot for the long-term sustainability of the organization. Another detail from the Advertiser article is that Community Living's funding has only increased four per cent in the last 30 years. If you think about issues around Ontario funding for autism programs, or the severe underfunding of payouts for everyone receiving money under the Ontario Disability Support Program, or ODSP, it's pretty clear that there's a crisis when it comes to supporting people with special needs in this province. This week, we're going to shed some light on what might be the most overlooked demographic in the area of people in need, and how we can all do better on their behalf. So we're joined by Cindy Kinnon, the executive director of Community Living Guelph Wellington, who will talk about how long they've been managing with a budget shortfall, and how they've managed to get across the fiscal finish line in the last few years, and how every one in Guelph can help them out. So let's go inside Community Living on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can learn more about Community Living Guelph Wellington at their website, you can follow them @clguelphwell on Facebook and Instagram, or you can get in touch with them the old fashioned way on the phone at 519-824-2480. e read in Parashat Matot of the war that G-d commanded Beneh Yisrael to wage against the nation of Midyan to avenge the tragedy of Ba'al Pe'or. Midyan, together Moav, conspired to lure Beneh Yisrael to sins of immorality and idol-worship. The scheme, unfortunately, succeeded, and G-d punished Beneh Yisrael by sending a plague that killed 24,000 members of the nation. Hashem instructed Beneh Yisrael to wage war against Midyan in order to take revenge. The Torah relates that this battle was led by Pinhas, the son of the Kohen Gadol, Elazar (31:6). Rashi gives two reasons for why specifically Pinhas was chosen to lead the war. First, he was the one who saved Beneh Yisrael from annihilation during the calamity of Ba'al Pe'or, by killing a man and woman who committed a public sinful act. Once Pinhas avenged G-d's honor, G-d ended the plague. Rashi writes that since Pinhas began the Misva by killing these two violators, he was chosen to complete the Misva by leading the war against Midyan. But then Rashi adds a second explanation. He writes that Pinhas led the war against Midyan to avenge that nation's role in the sale of his ancestor, Yosef, as a slave. Pinhas' mother was a descendant of Yosef, and merchants from Midyan were the ones who, after purchasing Yosef from his brothers, brought him to Egypt and sold him to Potifar, an Egyptian nobleman. It was thus appropriate for Yosef's descendant, Pinhas, to lead Beneh Yisrael's war against the people of Midyan. Rashi's comments seem puzzling. Why should Midyan be blamed for Mechirat Yosef (the sale of Yosef as a slave)? It was Yosef's brothers who turned on him; the Midyanim simply accepted the offer and paid for Yosef, after which they sold him for a profit. Why did their role in Mechirat Yosef need to be avenged? Yosef excelled particularly in the area of Kedusha, maintaining his sanctity and purity even in the face of overwhelming temptation. As a teenager, he was lured to sin by Potifar's wife, and he resisted. The Midyanim, it appeared, had sinister intentions when they brought Yosef to Egypt, a society which at that time was steeped in decadence and immorality. They wanted to ruin Yosef by compromising his Kedusha, by putting him in a place where – they incorrectly assumed – he would be unable to withstand temptation and would be lured to sin. This is precisely what Midyan did several generations later, at Ba'al Pe'or. They tried destroying Beneh Yisrael by luring them to immorality, which would undermine their spirituality. Appropriately, then, Pinhas – a descendant of Yosef – led the war against Midyan, because this war avenged Midyan's devious scheme both at Ba'al Pe'or and with Mechirat Yosef. Our nation's struggle against Midyan continues to this very day, with greater intensity than ever. Contemporary society champions values that directly oppose the Torah's values of Kedusha and purity, and we are exposed at all times to lures that threaten to divest us of our sanctity. Hashem commanded Beneh Yisrael to wage war against Midyan – because we need to proactively reject and oppose the efforts made to undermine our Kedusha. We must continue waging this vitally important battle that began with Yosef and then proceeded with Pinhas, and work to oppose the sinful influences and lures that we face on a daily basis.

In this episode of Consider the Constitution, recorded close to the 2024 Juneteenth federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery, host Dr. Katie Crawford-Lackey interviews Dr. DeAnza Cook about the Reconstruction Amendments (13th, 14th, and 15th) and their impact on the American justice system. Dr. Cook explains how the 13th Amendment abolished slavery but left a loophole allowing involuntary servitude as punishment for a crime. This led to the disproportionate criminalization and incarceration of Black Americans during the Reconstruction era and beyond. The 14th and 15th Amendments aimed to address citizenship and voting rights for African Americans, but racial discrimination persisted. Black activists leveraged these amendments to challenge racist policing and punishment practices through the courts, protests, and self-defense. However, mass incarceration, which began in the late 20th century, continues to disproportionately affect people of color.Dr. Cook introduces the concept of "abolition democracy," which argues that the abolition of slavery was not enough to secure the rights and freedoms promised to Black Americans. She emphasizes the importance of restoring voting rights for those serving felony convictions and addressing de facto disenfranchisement in jails. The episode underscores the ongoing struggle for equal protection under the law and the need for collective action to pursue a more just and inclusive democracy, particularly as we reflect on the significance of Juneteenth.

In a steadfast effort to defend its borders, the State of Texas has begun to take measures against unlawful crossings by arresting illegal immigrants for trespassing in Shelby Park. The park, which covers a vast area of 47 acres in Eagle Pass, has recently experienced a significant surge in illegal migrant activity. The state sees its intervention as a necessary step, given the escalating situation at the border, an issue that it believes the federal authorities have contributed to. Texas' assumption of control over Shelby Park has been met with opposition from the Biden administration. They argue that the state's actions are hampering the efforts of the Border Patrol, raising tensions between Texas and federal authorities. Despite the backlash, Texas remains steadfast in its decision, insisting on the need to maintain orderly control over the park. In a recent announcement, Texas Department of Public Safety Spokesperson, Chris Olivarez, shed light on the increased actions taken by the state. He informed that their team, composed of state troopers, have initiated the process of arresting those illegal immigrants who are found trespassing in the park. The illegal crossings, predominantly involving single adult men and women, have prompted the state to take decisive action. Chris Olivarez continued to share updates, highlighting Texas' commitment towards maintaining the sanctity of its borders. Just a day after his initial announcement, he reported the arrest of three more illegal immigrants. These individuals, hailing from Azerbaijan and Ecuador, were apprehended after attempting to cross into the park through the barbed wire setup by Texas authorities. Their accusation was stern: criminal trespass. Upon their arrest, these illegal immigrants were promptly placed in custody. The act of trespass, regarded as criminal by the State of Texas, is being strictly enforced as part of the state's strategy to curb illegal border crossings. The Department of Homeland Security responded to these escalating events with a cease-and-desist letter to Texas. The federal agency demanded that the state relinquish control over Shelby Park, a measure that the Texas National Guard had implemented in order to tackle the escalating issue of illegal immigration. Texas, however, met this demand with defiance. The state's Attorney General, Ken Paxton, strongly affirmed that Texas has no intentions of relinquishing control over the park. Paxton was vocal about Texas' commitment to protecting its borders and expressed discontentment with what he perceived as lax border policies from the Biden administration. Paxton declared that Texas would not give in to what he described as 'destructive open-border policies' and pledged to continue Texas' fight in protecting its territory, sovereignty, and citizens. He firmly stated that rather than succumbing to threats from the federal government, Texas would assert its constitutional authority. Attorney General Paxton expressed his frustration with the Biden administration's approach towards border control. He criticized the administration for replying with threats, instead of addressing Texas's urgent requests for federal assistance. Paxton's message made it clear that Texas would not sit idle but would instead defend its rights and the welfare of its citizens. Paxton's response illuminated Texas' determination to assert its constitutional powers of self-defense. He urged the Department of Homeland Security to focus on fulfilling its responsibilities rather than seeking legal intervention. His sentiments serve as an underpinning to Texas' stance: unwavering and resolute in its commitment to protect its citizens. In his closing remarks, Attorney General Paxton made a declaration highlighting the state's resolve. He insisted that they have legal counsel ready to rebut any legal challenges to Texas' state-imposed control of the park. Emphasizing the right of self-defense, he implored the federal agencies to do their job and obey the law. The Biden administration's response to the dispute remains firm, indicating that they will utilize all legal avenues to regain control of the park. Yet, with Texas equally steadfast, a resolution seems distant. Unmoved by federal efforts, Texas continues to maintain tight control over its borders and the unfolding situation in Shelby Park. ‘Former Jacksonville sheriff and activist leader, Nathaniel (Nat) Glover, says he will not let cynicism take root despite the racially motivated shooting in New Town Jacksonville this past weekend and, like 63 years ago, he still believes in a better world and that we can move forward.' In his new book Striving for Justice: A Black Sheriff in the Deep South (August 22, 2023), Glover details an assault he experienced in Jacksonville, Florida as 17-year-old boy at the hands of a mob of hundreds of white men with ax handles and baseball bats – an experience that nearly killed him. Nat Glover ended up being the first Black man to have been elected sheriff in the deep south since 1888. His innovative community policing initiatives drew the praise and attention of then-President Bill Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno. Nat also gained national attention for his ban on choke holds and de-escalation training for officers dealing with mentally challenged individuals. His innovative policies increased community trust and reduced crime in his jurisdiction by 17.2% over his eight-year term in office. Glover joins Tavis to discuss how his resilience in the face of adversity parallels the need for a continued fight against systemic racism and discrimination – while conversely unpacking the recent tragedy which underscores the persistence of hate and prejudice.

Death culture historically has been family and tradition-centric, for this reason the LGBTQ+ community often has felt alienated by traditional mourning rituals, and as a result has formed their own diverse traditions, which are often protests of the injustices they faced in life. The fascinating and unique death culture that has emerged is a diverse and vibrant as the LGBTQ+ community itself. tombwithaviewpodcast@gmail.comFacebookInstagram
After working with me, Jeannette's sleep improved — but one night she woke up and found that she couldn't fall back to sleep and all her old fears returned. She felt that something must be wrong with her as she found herself waking and finding it impossible to fall back to sleep night after night. This pulled Jeannette back into her old safety behaviors that she knew from experience weren't helpful because she just didn't know what else to do. In this episode, Jeannette describes how she moved away from the insomnia struggle; how she became more comfortable with nighttime wakefulness, how she stopped chasing after sleep, how she started to allow her mind to generate whatever thoughts it chose to generate — even the difficult ones, and how she started to be kinder to herself when things were difficult.
Dr. Louis Sullivan's leadership and advocacy for equity in the health professions have taken him from the classroom to the seats of power in Washington. He reflects on his own journey and the challenges that still exist in training people of color to become doctors and for other medical roles. Dr. Sullivan believes, “It's a combination of a lack of adequate preparation, lack of financial resources, and also a lack of role models.” He shares his inspiring story from the then-segregated South and the influences that helped him. Dr. Sullivan served as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is the co-author of the new book “We'll Fight it Out Here: A History of the Ongoing Struggle for Health Equity.” We're honored to have him join hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter to discuss these topics, the gaps COVID has exposed, and the current political battles over equity. The Reconstruction era is typically defined as that period starting at 1865 with the ratification of the 13th Amendment and ending in 1877 with the disputed presidential election of Rutherford B. Hayes and the Compromise of 1877. But so often in school, that time period in our nation's history is glossed over. What do we really know about Reconstruction? And how can studying that period help us better understand where we are today as a county? On this show, we talk with Attorney James Williams, retired Orange County Chief Public Defender and the organizer of an upcoming symposium on the Reconstruction period, and Dr. William Sturkey, Professor of History at UNC Chapel Hill, and author of a recently published book titled “Hattiesburg: An American City in Black and White.”
Sacred Liberty: America's Long, Bloody, and Ongoing Struggle for Religious Freedom offers a dramatic, sweeping survey of how America built a unique model of religious freedom, perhaps the nation's “greatest invention.” Steven Waldman, the bestselling author of Founding Faith, shows how early ideas about religious liberty were tested and refined amidst the brutal persecution of Catholics, Baptists, Mormons, Quakers, African slaves, Native Americans, Muslims, Jews, and Jehovah's Witnesses. American leaders drove religious freedom forward--figures like James Madison, George Washington, the World War II presidents (Roosevelt, Truman, and Eisenhower) and even George W. Bush. But the biggest heroes were the regular Americans – people like Mary Dyer, Marie Barnett and W.D. Mohammed -- who risked their lives or reputations by demanding to practice their faiths freely.Just as the documentary Eyes on the Prize captured the rich drama of the civil rights movement, Sacred Liberty: America's Long, Bloody, and Ongoing Struggle for Religious Freedom brings to life the remarkable story of how America became one of the few nations in world history that has religious freedom, diversity and high levels of piety at the same time. Finally, Sacred Liberty provides a roadmap for how, in the face of modern threats to religious freedom, this great achievement can be preserved.-Steven Waldman is the national bestselling author of Founding Faith: How Our Founding Fathers Forged a Radical New Approach to Religious Liberty and the co-founder of Beliefnet, the award-winning multifaith website. He is now co-founder and President of Report for America, a national service program that places talented journalists into local newsrooms. His writings have also appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Washington Post, Newsweek, National Review, Christianity Today, The Atlantic, First Things, The Washington Monthly, Slate, The New Republic, and others.
