Ralph welcomes back union organizer, Chris Townsend, to discuss the reasons why the AFL-CIO shrinks from effectively fighting for its members and expanding the power of workers. Then, political scientist Lee Drutman lays out a system of proportional representation that would take away the incentive to gerrymander congressional districts. Plus, Ralph gives some quick takes on Thomas Massie's primary loss, fish hopped up on cocaine, and the situations in Lebanon and Ukraine.Chris Townsend has been a union member and labor leader for more than 45 years. He was most recently the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) International Union Organizing Director. Previously, he was an International Representative and Political Action Director for the United Electrical Workers Union (UE), and he has held local positions in both the SEIU and UFCW.[The upcoming AFL-CIO] convention is deliberately kept secret. It's what I describe as sort of a hideout strategy. It enables the leadership to not have to discuss or take positions that for them are difficult, such as: What is the labor movement going to do to confront the rampant lawlessness and criminality of the Trump regime? What is the labor movement going to do to address the rampaging inflation that is eating up living standards? There's no wage policy. There's no bargaining policy of the Federation. What are they going to do to address the ongoing national health care crisis and disaster?... And what are they doing about the crisis of the unorganized?Chris TownsendThe labor movement finds itself (I would submit) with the leadership disinterested in going out and organizing the unorganized. But even for those who do (and there are some), the laws—Taft-Hartley primary among them—provide such a minefield that we have to run through, that our ability to organize on any scale for decades has been stopped. And therefore, we are condemned to a perpetual shrinking size, resources, and whatnot. [And what] might help for folks to figure out how or why this is happening is that the labor movement is systematically being converted from trade union fighting organizations, membership-driven fighting organizations, to harmless not-for-profit organizations. And this is today's administrative layer of trade union leaders that don't see anything wrong with that. But that doesn't help anyone in the shop, in the office, in the workplace. And it doesn't help anyone looking to the labor movement for something better—better treatment, better wages, better benefits, better conditions, better health and safety in the workplace.Chris TownsendLee Drutman is a senior fellow in the Political Reform program at New America, where he focuses on electoral reform, Congress, and democratic health. And he is the author of The Business of America is Lobbying and Breaking the Two-Party Doom Loop: The Case for Multiparty Democracy in America.The whole issue of gerrymandering is really just an outgrowth of this way that we use single-winner districts with winner-take-all votes. It's also what entrenches the two-party system in the US, which limits the choice of voters. So there's this one weird voting mechanism that we have that most countries have gotten rid of, that is an antiquated voting system, that preserves the two-party system and makes gerrymandering just inevitable—and that's the use of single-member districts. Now, in a proportional system, you take away the districts, and you do this statewide, you can carve up larger states into a few multi-member districts. And then seats get allocated proportionally by party share. That takes away the entire incentive of gerrymandering, it gives voters everywhere meaningful choices, meaningful votes, and it is just a superior system of representing the pluralism and diversity of our pluralistic and diverse society.Lee DrutmanPeople like the idea of proportional representation as basic fairness—that people think that parties should get seats in proportion to the share of votes they get. I did some polling on it a few years ago, and I'm hoping to do a little bit more… But I think that one of the challenges is people don't entirely understand how it works. And so it's a challenge to poll people on a concept that they don't know about. But I think more and more people understand it. And from the polling I've seen, at a principles-based level, people get the idea that proportionality is a form of fairness, and people like fairness.Lee DrutmanKaty O'Donnell is the editorial director at Haymarket Books, a radical, independent, nonprofit book publisher based in Chicago.News 5/22/26* Our first story this week has to do with what appears to be the impending downfall of ultrazionist media personality, Bari Weiss. Weiss, who resigned from the New York Times to found the Free Press and then sold that venture to become “Editor-in-Chief” for CBS News under the Ellison regime, is reportedly facing down the barrel of her role being scaled back substantially. Puck reports “As Paramount closes in on its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery…members of the senior leadership team have had informal discussions about changing Bari's mandate at CBS News—and, eventually, CNN—in ways that would give her less control over the linear product.” This piece cites her missteps stewarding CBS News, including her inability to improve the ratings for Evening News, even failing to secure new anchor Tony Dokoupil a travel visa to China in time for President Trump's recent visit to the People's Republic. While a total dismissal of Weiss seems unlikely in the near future, such a dramatic reduction in her clout would constitute a tremendous, humbling blow.* Moving to state-level news, last week, Colorado Democratic Governor Jared Polis announced he would be commuting the sentence of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, who was sentenced to nine years in prison for tampering with voting systems to overturn Joe Biden's victory in the Centennial State. Peters will now be eligible for parole June 1st. This move has been widely condemned, most notably by the Colorado Democratic Party which voted by a margin of over 90% to officially censure Polis. In a statement, the CDP wrote, “Reducing [Peters'] sentence now, under pressure from Donald Trump, is not justice…It sends a message to future bad actors that election tampering has consequences, unless you're friends with the president.” According to NBC, the CDP also banned Polis from being able to “participate as an honored guest, speaker or officially recognized representative of the Colorado Democratic Party at party-sponsored functions.”* In more positive state-level news, NPR reports Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has signed a bill banning prediction market sites like Polymarket and Kalshi – which allow consumers to “place…wager[s] on…future outcome[s], like sports, elections, live entertainment” – from operating in the North Star State. This makes Minnesota the first state in the nation to ban the prediction betting platforms. As this story notes, the Trump administration is pursuing legal action on behalf of the platforms, ensuring a legal battle over whether states can act to protect their own consumers from these predatory betting services. Minnesota Rep. Emma Greenman, who introduced the measure, is quoted as saying, “We as a state should decide how best and what regulations we think should attach to gambling, to protect public safety, to protect our kids.” The administration, meanwhile, specifically the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is arguing in court that prediction market industry regulation should be the sole preserve of the federal government.* Looking toward Congress, this week saw a number of high-profile primaries, including in the state of Pennsylvania. Leading up to that primary, the Pennsylvania machine went all out against the congressional campaign of State Representative Chris Rabb. Rabb, who had won the endorsements of everyone from AOC and Rashida Tlaib to Jamie Raskin and Philly DSA to the Philadelphia Inquirer, was targeted by a barrage of anonymous text messages to Philadelphia voters accusing him of “spreading conspiracy theories and holding extremist views,” per the Inquirer. What is remarkable about this smear campaign, however, is that it was organized by Philadelphia's Democratic City Committee and that it violated federal election law by failing to disclose that fact. In another troubling portend of things to come, one of the texts featured an “AI-generated image of Rabb acknowledging his supposed lack of legislative accomplishments in Harrisburg.” Rumors have long circulated that Governor Josh Shapiro wanted Rabb to lose, and worked the backrooms to this end while avoiding public statements.* Yet, despite all of that, Rabb prevailed – winning over his two establishment-backed opponents with around 45% of the vote compared to his opponents, who each won approximately 30% and 24% respectively. The Pennsylvania primaries turned out to be a good night for progressives more generally, with Bob Brooks – a firefighter's union chief and former state rep. who successfully united the Democratic Party behind him, winning the endorsements of both Governor Josh Shapiro and Senator Bernie Sanders. Brooks will face off against freshman Republican Congressman Ryan Mackenzie in November in the R+1 seventh district of Pennsylvania, while Rabb's general election campaign is seen as little more than a formality in the D+40 PA-03.* Yet, if it was a good streak for Democratic progressives, it was a very bad one for Trump critics within the GOP. This week, Thomas Massie lost his primary in Kentucky's fourth congressional district, buckling under the war chest deployed against him in what amounted to the most expensive House primary on record. Massie joked that “My vote was never for sale, so they bought a congressional seat. They found out what it cost.” Massie, perhaps Trump's most formidable intra-party opponent in the House during his second term, worked with Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna on bills ranging from the Epstein Files Transparency Act to War Powers Resolutions related to the administration's actions in Venezuela and Iran. In retaliation, Trump made it clear that he would go to any lengths to ensure Massie would not be reelected. That said, Massie will remain in the House until January and has indicated that he will make that time as painful for Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson as he possibly can. Moreover, during his concession speech, Massie's supporters chanted for him to run for president in 2028, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Whether he is even entertaining that thought is unclear, but if he did run as a right-wing independent candidate, one could easily imagine him capturing a large enough share of the vote to deny certain states to the Republican nominee. Meanwhile, his ally across the aisle, Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna, said in a statement that Massie “lost because he had the guts to stand up to the Epstein class and against the war…He won voters under 45 by 30 points…Tonight, I say to [his] voters who feel rejected by Trump. We welcome you. Join our coalition to take on a rotten system and stand for the working class over the Epstein class.”* Massie isn't the only Republican targeted in the latest round of Trump purges. Downballot, Trump loyalists have ousted the Indiana Republicans who resisted Trump's pressure to implement mid-decade redistricting, but the real scalps he is claiming are in the Senate. Last weekend, Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana lost his primary runoff. Fox reports this makes Cassidy the “first elected Republican senator to lose renomination since Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana in 2012.” Trump wasted no time in dancing on Cassidy's political grave, writing on Truth Social, “His disloyalty to the man who got him elected is now a part of a legend, and it's nice to see that his political career is OVER!” His supposed disloyalty, of course, refers to Cassidy's vote to convict Trump in the Senate trial for his second impeachment following January 6th. Former Senator Mitt Romney, who also voted to convict, is quoted in this article saying that Cassidy is a “person of character,” and that his “departure is a loss for the country.” Cassidy, however, is likely soon to be joined by longtime Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn. Cornyn is currently making his last stand against scandal-ridden Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in that runoff election. Trump has long prevaricated regarding whether and whom he would endorse in this race, at times leaning towards either candidate but remaining neutral up until this week, when he formally gave the nod to Paxton, per the Texas Tribune. This move has caused great consternation amongst Senate Republicans and cautious optimism among Democrats, who see Paxton as the weaker opponent to go up against Democratic nominee James Talarico in November – giving Democrats their best chance in years to flip a Senate seat in Texas.* What Cornyn's next move will be is a mystery, especially as he has not yet officially lost the Texas primary. Cassidy, however, appears to have chosen the Massie route of going down fighting. This week, Cassidy flipped his position to become the deciding vote in favor of the Senate War Powers Resolution on Iran – successfully pushing it through along with support from fellow Republican Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Rand Paul, despite disloyal opposition from Democratic Senator John Fetterman. The measure was then sent back to the House, but fearful it might actually pass – Democratic holdout Jared Golden had vowed to vote yes, and war-weary House Republicans Thomas Massie, Warren Davidson, Brian Fitzpatrick and Tom Barrett were all signaling their support – leadership abruptly canceled the vote, per MSN.* One factor cited in the Republicans' calculus around this latest War Powers push was the absences of Members of Congress. In their view, the absences would have given Democrats the votes they needed to win. Two of these absences have garnered substantial attention in the media: those of Republican Congressman Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey and Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson of Florida. The 83-year-old Wilson, who was missing for a month with little public acknowledgment or explanation, has finally resurfaced, saying that she was undergoing a major eye surgery but still plans to seek reelection. In a remarkably tone-deaf comment, a source close to the Congresswoman was quoted in Axios saying “missing votes is not a sign she's sick or retiring…She shows up when she wants to.” Still, at least her absence has been explained and she has now returned to her duties in the House. Congressman Kean's disappearance is more mysterious. As of May 21st, Kean has not “been seen in Washington for more than 75 days,” NOTUS reports. When his absence first began to gain media traction, his Chief of Staff added fuel to the fire with the cryptic remark “there are no cameras where Tom is.” Now it is being reported that his neighbors back in New Jersey haven't seen hide nor hair either. There has been some indication that Kean is dealing with a personal or medical issue, but Speaker Mike Johnson claims to have no knowledge of the particulars. It is not controversial to say that being an American Member of Congress is too important to simply be AWOL for long periods of time, especially without deigning to explain why to one's constituents. Something must be done.* Finally, we turn to Latin America, where former president Evo Morales has leveled claims that the government of his native Bolivia, in coordination with the DEA and the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) is plotting to “detain or kill” him, TeleSUR reports. According to this report, “Morales detailed specific military units allegedly involved, including the Army's Ninth Division in the tropical region under Colonel Franz Andrade Loza, whom he said the government promised to promote to general and appoint as armed forces commander ‘if he finishes off Evo.'” Morales also “cited an F-10 unit under Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Giménez Ortuño,” a former aide to the defense minister in the government of the unelected U.S.-backed regime of Jeanine Áñez. These allegations sound somewhat outlandish, but in a moment when the U.S. has recently kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, worked to undermine the governments of Mexico and Colombia via the Hondurasgate scheme, and just recently moved to indict 94 year old Raúl Castro for his role in an incident three decades ago when the Cuban government downed a civilian aircraft that entered their sovereign airspace, it does not seem so far fetched.This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Možno si poviete: „Nemám čas, ani náladu na hlboké filozofovanie!“ No tu ide o veľmi praktickú vec: Ako vnímam Boha, taký som. Kto Ho považuje za agresora, bude agresívny, kto za slabého, bude vystrašený. Kto za Ježiška, čo nosí darčeky, bude rozmaznaný. Kto za zlomyseľného sudcu, čo prenasleduje kvôli nezmyselným maličkostiam (samozrejme, sudcovia sú aj dobrí a mnohé zákony tiež), ten bude nepríjemný na seba aj druhých. Pre Hitlera bola evolúcia bohom, a tak zabíjal „menejcenných“. Veriť v správneho Boha je preto životne dôležité. – – No a kedy Mária spoznala vteleného Boha? Predsa ju oslovil a keď povedal slová: „…ešte (som) nevstúpil k Otcovi, ale choď k Mojim bratom a povedz im: Vstupujem k Svojmu Otcovi a k vášmu Otcovi, k Svojmu Bohu a k vášmu Bohu.“ – – Božie slovo je nenahraditeľné. Keď si ho prečítame celé a dôsledne, postupne spoznáme všetky črty nebeského Otca. Ukazuje nám, že môžeme byť v Jeho rodine. Točí sa mi hlava, keď o tom čítam, ale dá sa to zakúsiť. Božia otcovská láska plná múdrosti, citu, ale aj prísnej spravodlivosti je pre nás už pripravená. Stačí ju len prijať vierou (Ján 1,12). Modlitba: Bože, ďakujem za Teba, že si dokonalý a taký úžasný, že budeme potrebovať celú večnosť, aby sme Ťa spoznali úplne. Odpusť, že často verím zjednodušeným predstavám o Tebe, a potom robím nesprávne veci. Veď ma Svojím Duchom, nech Ťa správne spoznávam a správne žijem! Amen. E quelli gli fissarono trenta monete d'argento. Da quel momento cercava l'occasione propizia per consegnare Gesù.Il primo giorno degli Ázzimi, i discepoli si avvicinarono a Gesù e gli dissero: «Dove vuoi che prepariamo per te, perché tu possa mangiare la Pasqua?». Ed egli rispose: «Andate in città da un tale e ditegli: "Il Maestro dice: Il mio tempo è vicino; farò la Pasqua da te con i miei discepoli"». I discepoli fecero come aveva loro ordinato Gesù, e prepararono la Pasqua.Venuta la sera, si mise a tavola con i Dodici. Mentre mangiavano, disse: «In verità io vi dico: uno di voi mi tradirà». Ed essi, profondamente rattristati, cominciarono ciascuno a domandargli: «Sono forse io, Signore?». Ed egli rispose: «Colui che ha messo con me la mano nel piatto, è quello che mi tradirà. Il Figlio dell'uomo se ne va, come sta scritto di lui; ma guai a quell'uomo dal quale il Figlio dell'uomo viene tradito! Meglio per quell'uomo se non fosse mai nato!». Giuda, il traditore, disse: «Rabbì, sono forse io?». Gli rispose: «Tu l'hai detto».Parola del Signore.

Réponse à travers des propos du Rambam, du Ramban, de Rabbénou Bé'hayé et de Rav Its'hak Yossef.

In quel tempo, un certo Lazzaro di Betània, il villaggio di Maria e di Marta sua sorella, era malato. Maria era quella che cosparse di profumo il Signore e gli asciugò i piedi con i suoi capelli; suo fratello Lazzaro era malato. Le sorelle mandarono dunque a dire a Gesù: «Signore, ecco, colui che tu ami è malato». All'udire questo, Gesù disse: «Questa malattia non porterà alla morte, ma è per la gloria di Dio, affinché per mezzo di essa il Figlio di Dio venga glorificato». Gesù amava Marta e sua sorella e Lazzaro. Quando sentì che era malato, rimase per due giorni nel luogo dove si trovava. Poi disse ai discepoli: «Andiamo di nuovo in Giudea!». I discepoli gli dissero: «Rabbì, poco fa i Giudei cercavano di lapidarti e tu ci vai di nuovo?». Gesù rispose: «Non sono forse dodici le ore del giorno? Se uno cammina di giorno, non inciampa, perché vede la luce di questo mondo; ma se cammina di notte, inciampa, perché la luce non è in lui». Disse queste cose e poi soggiunse loro: «Lazzaro, il nostro amico, s'è addormentato; ma io vado a svegliarlo». Gli dissero allora i discepoli: «Signore, se si è addormentato, si salverà». Gesù aveva parlato della morte di lui; essi invece pensarono che parlasse del riposo del sonno. Allora Gesù disse loro apertamente: «Lazzaro è morto e io sono contento per voi di non essere stato là, affinché voi crediate; ma andiamo da lui!». Allora Tommaso, chiamato Dìdimo, disse agli altri discepoli: «Andiamo anche noi a morire con lui!». Quando Gesù arrivò, trovò Lazzaro che già da quattro giorni era nel sepolcro. Betània distava da Gerusalemme meno di tre chilometri e molti Giudei erano venuti da Marta e Maria a consolarle per il fratello. Marta dunque, come udì che veniva Gesù, gli andò incontro; Maria invece stava seduta in casa. Marta disse a Gesù: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto! Ma anche ora so che qualunque cosa tu chiederai a Dio, Dio te la concederà». Gesù le disse: «Tuo fratello risorgerà». Gli rispose Marta: «So che risorgerà nella risurrezione dell'ultimo giorno». Gesù le disse: «Io sono la risurrezione e la vita; chi crede in me, anche se muore, vivrà; chiunque vive e crede in me, non morirà in eterno. Credi questo?». Gli rispose: «Sì, o Signore, io credo che tu sei il Cristo, il Figlio di Dio, colui che viene nel mondo». Dette queste parole, andò a chiamare Maria, sua sorella, e di nascosto le disse: «Il Maestro è qui e ti chiama». Udito questo, ella si alzò subito e andò da lui. Gesù non era entrato nel villaggio, ma si trovava ancora là dove Marta gli era andata incontro. Allora i Giudei, che erano in casa con lei a consolarla, vedendo Maria alzarsi in fretta e uscire, la seguirono, pensando che andasse a piangere al sepolcro. Quando Maria giunse dove si trovava Gesù, appena lo vide si gettò ai suoi piedi dicendogli: «Signore, se tu fossi stato qui, mio fratello non sarebbe morto!». Gesù allora, quando la vide piangere, e piangere anche i Giudei che erano venuti con lei, si commosse profondamente e, molto turbato, domandò: «Dove lo avete posto?». Gli dissero: «Signore, vieni a vedere!». Gesù scoppiò in pianto. Dissero allora i Giudei: «Guarda come lo amava!». Ma alcuni di loro dissero: «Lui, che ha aperto gli occhi al cieco, non poteva anche far sì che costui non morisse?». Allora Gesù, ancora una volta commosso profondamente, si recò al sepolcro: era una grotta e contro di essa era posta una pietra. Disse Gesù: «Togliete la pietra!». Gli rispose Marta, la sorella del morto: «Signore, manda già cattivo odore: è lì da quattro giorni». Le disse Gesù: «Non ti ho detto che, se crederai, vedrai la gloria di Dio?». Tolsero dunque la pietra. Gesù allora alzò gli occhi e disse: «Padre, ti rendo grazie perché mi hai ascoltato. Io sapevo che mi dai sempre ascolto, ma l'ho detto per la gente che mi sta attorno, perché credano che tu mi hai mandato». Detto questo, gridò a gran voce: «Lazzaro, vieni fuori!». Il morto uscì, i piedi e le mani legati con bende, e il viso avvolto da un sudario. Gesù disse loro: «Liberàtelo e lasciàtelo andare». Molti dei Giudei che erano venuti da Maria, alla vista di ciò che egli aveva compiuto, credettero in lui.

In quel tempo, Gesù passando vide un uomo cieco dalla nascita e i suoi discepoli lo interrogarono: «Rabbì, chi ha peccato, lui o i suoi genitori, perché sia nato cieco?». Rispose Gesù: «Né lui ha peccato né i suoi genitori, ma è perché in lui siano manifestate le opere di Dio. Bisogna che noi compiamo le opere di colui che mi ha mandato finché è giorno; poi viene la notte, quando nessuno può agire. Finché io sono nel mondo, sono la luce del mondo». Detto questo, sputò per terra, fece del fango con la saliva, spalmò il fango sugli occhi del cieco e gli disse: «Va' a lavarti nella piscina di Sìloe», che significa "Inviato". Quegli andò, si lavò e tornò che ci vedeva. Allora i vicini e quelli che lo avevano visto prima, perché era un mendicante, dicevano: «Non è lui quello che stava seduto a chiedere l'elemosina?». Alcuni dicevano: «È lui»; altri dicevano: «No, ma è uno che gli assomiglia». Ed egli diceva: «Sono io!». Allora gli domandarono: «In che modo ti sono stati aperti gli occhi?». Egli rispose: «L'uomo che si chiama Gesù ha fatto del fango, me lo ha spalmato sugli occhi e mi ha detto: "Va' a Sìloe e làvati!". Io sono andato, mi sono lavato e ho acquistato la vista». Gli dissero: «Dov'è costui?». Rispose: «Non lo so». Condussero dai farisei quello che era stato cieco: era un sabato, il giorno in cui Gesù aveva fatto del fango e gli aveva aperto gli occhi. Anche i farisei dunque gli chiesero di nuovo come aveva acquistato la vista. Ed egli disse loro: «Mi ha messo del fango sugli occhi, mi sono lavato e ci vedo». Allora alcuni dei farisei dicevano: «Quest'uomo non viene da Dio, perché non osserva il sabato». Altri invece dicevano: «Come può un peccatore compiere segni di questo genere?». E c'era dissenso tra loro. Allora dissero di nuovo al cieco: «Tu, che cosa dici di lui, dal momento che ti ha aperto gli occhi?». Egli rispose: «È un profeta!». Ma i Giudei non credettero di lui che fosse stato cieco e che avesse acquistato la vista, finché non chiamarono i genitori di colui che aveva ricuperato la vista. E li interrogarono: «È questo il vostro figlio, che voi dite essere nato cieco? Come mai ora ci vede?». I genitori di lui risposero: «Sappiamo che questo è nostro figlio e che è nato cieco; ma come ora ci veda non lo sappiamo, e chi gli abbia aperto gli occhi, noi non lo sappiamo. Chiedetelo a lui: ha l'età, parlerà lui di sé». Questo dissero i suoi genitori, perché avevano paura dei Giudei; infatti i Giudei avevano già stabilito che, se uno lo avesse riconosciuto come il Cristo, venisse espulso dalla sinagoga. Per questo i suoi genitori dissero: «Ha l'età: chiedetelo a lui!». Allora chiamarono di nuovo l'uomo che era stato cieco e gli dissero: «Da' gloria a Dio! Noi sappiamo che quest'uomo è un peccatore». Quello rispose: «Se sia un peccatore, non lo so. Una cosa io so: ero cieco e ora ci vedo». Allora gli dissero: «Che cosa ti ha fatto? Come ti ha aperto gli occhi?». Rispose loro: «Ve l'ho già detto e non avete ascoltato; perché volete udirlo di nuovo? Volete forse diventare anche voi suoi discepoli?». Lo insultarono e dissero: «Suo discepolo sei tu! Noi siamo discepoli di Mosè! Noi sappiamo che a Mosè ha parlato Dio; ma costui non sappiamo di dove sia». Rispose loro quell'uomo: «Proprio questo stupisce: che voi non sapete di dove sia, eppure mi ha aperto gli occhi. Sappiamo che Dio non ascolta i peccatori, ma che, se uno onora Dio e fa la sua volontà, egli lo ascolta. Da che mondo è mondo, non si è mai sentito dire che uno abbia aperto gli occhi a un cieco nato. Se costui non venisse da Dio, non avrebbe potuto far nulla». Gli replicarono: «Sei nato tutto nei peccati e insegni a noi?». E lo cacciarono fuori. Gesù seppe che l'avevano cacciato fuori; quando lo trovò, gli disse: «Tu, credi nel Figlio dell'uomo?». Egli rispose: «E chi è, Signore, perché io creda in lui?». Gli disse Gesù: «Lo hai visto: è colui che parla con te». Ed egli disse: «Credo, Signore!». E si prostrò dinanzi a lui. Gesù allora disse: «È per un giudizio che io sono venuto in questo mondo, perché coloro che non vedono, vedano e quelli che vedono, diventino ciechi». Alcuni dei farisei che erano con lui udirono queste parole e gli dissero: «Siamo ciechi anche noi?». Gesù rispose loro: «Se foste ciechi, non avreste alcun peccato; ma siccome dite: "Noi vediamo", il vostro peccato rimane».

In quel tempo, Gesù giunse a una città della Samarìa chiamata Sicar, vicina al terreno che Giacobbe aveva dato a Giuseppe suo figlio: qui c'era un pozzo di Giacobbe. Gesù dunque, affaticato per il viaggio, sedeva presso il pozzo. Era circa mezzogiorno. Giunge una donna samaritana ad attingere acqua. Le dice Gesù: «Dammi da bere». I suoi discepoli erano andati in città a fare provvista di cibi. Allora la donna samaritana gli dice: «Come mai tu, che sei giudeo, chiedi da bere a me, che sono una donna samaritana?». I Giudei infatti non hanno rapporti con i Samaritani. Gesù le risponde: «Se tu conoscessi il dono di Dio e chi è colui che ti dice: "Dammi da bere!", tu avresti chiesto a lui ed egli ti avrebbe dato acqua viva». Gli dice la donna: «Signore, non hai un secchio e il pozzo è profondo; da dove prendi dunque quest'acqua viva? Sei tu forse più grande del nostro padre Giacobbe, che ci diede il pozzo e ne bevve lui con i suoi figli e il suo bestiame?». Gesù le risponde: «Chiunque beve di quest'acqua avrà di nuovo sete; ma chi berrà dell'acqua che io gli darò, non avrà più sete in eterno. Anzi, l'acqua che io gli darò diventerà in lui una sorgente d'acqua che zampilla per la vita eterna». «Signore - gli dice la donna -, dammi quest'acqua, perché io non abbia più sete e non continui a venire qui ad attingere acqua». Le dice: «Va' a chiamare tuo marito e ritorna qui». Gli risponde la donna: «Io non ho marito». Le dice Gesù: «Hai detto bene: "Io non ho marito". Infatti hai avuto cinque mariti e quello che hai ora non è tuo marito; in questo hai detto il vero». Gli replica la donna: «Signore, vedo che tu sei un profeta! I nostri padri hanno adorato su questo monte; voi invece dite che è a Gerusalemme il luogo in cui bisogna adorare». Gesù le dice: «Credimi, donna, viene l'ora in cui né su questo monte né a Gerusalemme adorerete il Padre. Voi adorate ciò che non conoscete, noi adoriamo ciò che conosciamo, perché la salvezza viene dai Giudei. Ma viene l'ora - ed è questa - in cui i veri adoratori adoreranno il Padre in spirito e verità: così infatti il Padre vuole che siano quelli che lo adorano. Dio è spirito, e quelli che lo adorano devono adorare in spirito e verità». Gli rispose la donna: «So che deve venire il Messia, chiamato Cristo: quando egli verrà, ci annuncerà ogni cosa». Le dice Gesù: «Sono io, che parlo con te». In quel momento giunsero i suoi discepoli e si meravigliavano che parlasse con una donna. Nessuno tuttavia disse: «Che cosa cerchi?», o: «Di che cosa parli con lei?». La donna intanto lasciò la sua anfora, andò in città e disse alla gente: «Venite a vedere un uomo che mi ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto. Che sia lui il Cristo?». Uscirono dalla città e andavano da lui. Intanto i discepoli lo pregavano: «Rabbì, mangia». Ma egli rispose loro: «Io ho da mangiare un cibo che voi non conoscete». E i discepoli si domandavano l'un l'altro: «Qualcuno gli ha forse portato da mangiare?». Gesù disse loro: «Il mio cibo è fare la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato e compiere la sua opera. Voi non dite forse: ancora quattro mesi e poi viene la mietitura? Ecco, io vi dico: alzate i vostri occhi e guardate i campi che già biondeggiano per la mietitura. Chi miete riceve il salario e raccoglie frutto per la vita eterna, perché chi semina gioisca insieme a chi miete. In questo infatti si dimostra vero il proverbio: uno semina e l'altro miete. Io vi ho mandati a mietere ciò per cui non avete faticato; altri hanno faticato e voi siete subentrati nella loro fatica». Molti Samaritani di quella città credettero in lui per la parola della donna, che testimoniava: «Mi ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto». E quando i Samaritani giunsero da lui, lo pregavano di rimanere da loro ed egli rimase là due giorni. Molti di più credettero per la sua parola e alla donna dicevano: «Non è più per i tuoi discorsi che noi crediamo, ma perché noi stessi abbiamo udito e sappiamo che questi è veramente il salvatore del mondo». Può egli entrare una seconda volta nel grembo di sua madre e nascere?» 5 Gesù rispose: «In verità, in verità ti dico che se uno non è nato d'acqua e di Spirito, non può entrare nel regno di Dio. 6 Quello che è nato dalla carne è carne, e quello che è nato dallo Spirito è spirito. 7 Non ti meravigliare se ti ho detto: "Bisogna che nasciate di nuovo". 8 Il vento soffia dove vuole, e tu ne odi il rumore, ma non sai né da dove viene né dove va; così è di chiunque è nato dallo Spirito». 9 Nicodemo replicò e gli disse: «Come possono avvenire queste cose?» 10 Gesù gli rispose: «Tu sei maestro d'Israele e non sai queste cose? 11 In verità, in verità ti dico che noi parliamo di ciò che sappiamo, e testimoniamo di ciò che abbiamo visto; ma voi non ricevete la nostra testimonianza. 12 Se vi ho parlato delle cose terrene e non credete, come crederete se vi parlerò delle cose celesti? 13 Nessuno è salito in cielo, se non colui che è disceso dal cielo: il Figlio dell'uomo. 14 E come Mosè innalzò il serpente nel deserto, così bisogna che il Figlio dell'uomo sia innalzato, 15 affinché chiunque crede in lui abbia vita eterna. 16 Perché Dio ha tanto amato il mondo, che ha dato il suo unigenito Figlio, affinché chiunque crede in lui non perisca, ma abbia vita eterna. 17 Infatti Dio non ha mandato suo Figlio nel mondo per giudicare il mondo, ma perché il mondo sia salvato per mezzo di lui. 18 Chi crede in lui non è giudicato; chi non crede è già giudicato, perché non ha creduto nel nome dell'unigenito Figlio di Dio. 19 Il giudizio è questo: la luce è venuta nel mondo, e gli uomini hanno amato le tenebre più della luce, perché le loro opere erano malvagie. 20 Perché chiunque fa cose malvagie odia la luce e non viene alla luce, affinché le sue opere non siano scoperte; 21 ma chi mette in pratica la verità viene alla luce, affinché le sue opere siano manifestate, perché sono fatte in Dio».
