This was an awesome episode. Matt Kazam joins me in the Huddle this week and it is one of the best times I have had on the show. The hour went by way to fast! I think we needed 3 to discuss everything! You gotta check out Matts website.. https://theylaughyouwin.com Matt is bringing laughter back to the work place. The revolutionary public speaking and humor training program of They Laugh You Win can turn anyone into and extraordinary public speaker. His story about Richard Branson is great and he has worked with many other CEOs who have all seen the value in humor training and teach their employees how to use the tools of stand-up comedy. Matt is a veteran comic who can be seen performing at the nation’s top comedy clubs, casinos and theatres. He has performed stand-up comedy over 6,000 times in 45 states and 7 countries. Matt has also performed at over 1,000 corporate and private events. He has an amazing ability to work any crowd, anywhere, any venue. At the age of 10 Matt saw his first comedy show in Las Vegas at the legendary Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. He knew right then that was what he wanted to do with his life. In 2014 Matt’s boyhood dream was realized and amazingly at the same iconic property where the dream was born, the Riviera. Matt’s one man comedy show, “40 Is Not The New 20,” was an instant success. Becoming a Las Vegas “must see” show month after month. He was the last headliner to perform at the Riviera that saw the likes of Frank Sinatra and Elvis rise to fame.  Matt’s energetic style, witty observations and unassuming charm are the driving forces behind his unique and hilarious comedy & learning events.  Growing up in New York City, he started performing shows for family and friends at the age of three, but it wasn’t until graduating college from George Mason University with a degree in finance that Matt finally took the plunge as a full-time stand-up comedian. While in DC he also was an on air sports personality talking Skins Football and all things sports in DC.   He has made television appearances on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”, Fox’s “Big Red Couch”, Comedy Central’s “Stand-Up Stand-Up”, VH-1’s “Fools For Love”, TLC’s “Two For Vegas”, The Discovery Channel’s “Lux List”, WGN’s “The Bob & Tom Show. Matt’s 1-man show, “40 Is Not The New 20,” had a residency at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The hilarious show tackles the subject matter both literally and figuratively. The material explores how much the world has changed in the past 40 years. The show is a mid-life celebration of the knowledge and experience that can only be gained with age. The show is like comfort food for the soul. It puts the notion that 40 is the new 20 on trial and breaks down the concept into categories such as technology, the media, politics, relationships, family, our priorities and even how much our bodies have changed over the years. Matt walks the audience through specific and general examples on how the 40 is not the new 20 and more importantly why?  All the while, the audience is being thoroughly entertained as well as feeling an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. Everyday topics like marriage, fashion, parenting, work, commuting, bills and exercise, just to name a few, will be compared and contrasted though the eyes of a 40+ year-old taking a look at today’s 20 year-old young adult.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our three panelists in this episode of Scaling Up Insights are Cheryl Beth Kuchler, Cheryl Biron, and Matt Kazam. Cheryl Beth is the Founder of CEO Think Tank and has over 30 years of experience in business advisory services. Cheryl is a business growth coach and the Founder of LexaGen Freedom Accelerator. And finally, Matt is a comedian and corporate entertainer based out of Las Vegas. Cheryl Beth has seen more innovation in the last six months among entrepreneurs than we have seen in the last five years. When you put constraints around something, people will figure out how to make it work. Cheryl believes this to be true as well. She was an entrepreneur in the 2005-2009 time frame and had to adapt quickly when the recession hit. Her business was stronger because of it. Matt recognizes the ones who are going to be successful are never going to go back to where we were before. Matt is currently working with a commercial real estate client and they know their clients aren’t coming back. So, they’re reinventing themselves. All three of our panelists, including Bill Gallagher, knew that clients would not be wanting to spend any money during the pandemic lockdown. So, they decided to give their work away for free and became hyper-focused on helping others and being in service to others. Although unintentional at the time, this giving mentally has paid off drastically where they’re full of paying client work now.   Interview Links: Ceothinktank.com Lexagen.net Reimagine Your Business event Theylaughyouwin.com   Resources: Scaling Up Workshop: Interested in attending one of our workshops? What if you could help connect with people on a whole new level through humor? What does it really take to get people to show their funny side? Today’s guest has a ton of experience with making people laugh and shares how it can be a powerful force towards building connection. Matt Kazam is a Humor Scientist & Las Vegas Headlining Comedian with over 30 years of experience. Matt Founded They Laugh You Win to harness his depth of knowledge in the craft of humor and performing. Matt has taught thousands of people and has helped hundreds of companies leverage the power of humor to accomplish their goals. Throughout Bill’s career, he was so afraid to mess up that he played a lot of things safe. He believes this is true for a lot of corporate leaders out there who don’t want to be the sole catalyst for everything falling apart. The downsides to playing it safe, though, is that you end up being so boring as a person because you’re afraid to offend someone. To top it off, you end up unable to engage or excite people while playing it safe. The truth is, everyone has these amazing stories within them, but they just don’t know how to tell it in an art form. It’s either too long or some of the boring bits get added in. When you refine your funny bone, you can tell the simplest life story and make it engaging and funny for anyone to hear (and not get offended by). Matt Kazam has been studying comedy since before he was born. His dad would blast him with classic laugh filled routines right in womb. Though, that didn't mean his father was going to give him a free pass in life. To get his parent's blessing, and to keep up with his two lawyer brothers and his doctor sister, Matt had to learn the science behind his life's calling. So, what's the secret to comedy? Turns out the answer has more to do with empathy than you might think.

“You are the best doctor for your body. You are the best therapist for your mind. You’ve just got to do the work.” Rewind the clock 4 ½ years and today’s guest was recovering from a heart attack. The cumulative effect of a lifetime on the stage had led to everything from diabetes to sleep apnea, to fertility problems, heart disease, and seriously high cholesterol. But there was something about facing death that shifted professional comedian, Matt Kazam’s perspective. He shocked him to realize that despite doing the work he was born to do, he was still unhappy. But in the face of his own mortality he became more open-minded. He didn’t want to die, he didn’t want to pump himself full of medication. Instead wanted to figure out a ‘real’ way to live a life of joy, health, and happiness. And it was this insight that transformed his life. “If you created a blueprint for unhappiness, it would be how western society lives its life.” In this episode, Matt shares how he went about undoing 45 years of living the wrong way. More than fixing his diet, Matt’s story is one of rewiring and re-booting. He attacked his problem from a place of logic and common sense and went back to the way we’re supposed to live our lives. With a day-to-day structured around rituals and routines that fill Matt with health, positivity and happiness, Matt’s story is an example of what’s possible when you take charge of your life. This is a guy who couldn’t tie his shoes - yet six months later he ran a half-marathon. This is a man who was infertile - but now he’s the inspirational dad to a beautiful three-year-old. This is an ‘unhappy comic’ who recognised that we’re meant to be happy, positive creatures - so he created a blueprint that allowed him to experience that truth. Matt’s passion for his journey flows out of every pore. His excitement for life and his passion for figuring out the path to happiness is an inspiration. So listen in and I’m certain Matt will help you see your world through fresh new eyes. He may even inspire you to start a journey of transformation for yourself. “If you’re looking for joy where joy doesn’t exist, you’re NEVER going to find it.” Some questions I ask: What did your day look like before you transformed your lifestyle? (6:33)What does your day look like now? (13:58)Why do you think your routines and rituals are so effective at keeping you in line? (25:54)How do your non-negotiables help you make happiness a daily priority? (31:10)If someone feels at rock bottom or they’re not where they want to be, what advice or tips do you have to help them start out on the road to change? (41:07)How do you stay grounded so you don’t slip back into the way you were? (55:33) In this episode, you will hear about: The decision that kick-started Matt’s new path. (Spoiler. It was much more than his diet). (3:35)The real reason Matt’s previous life had led him down the road to unhappiness. (8:16)The name Matt chose for his daughter that celebrates his journey. (8:56)The number 360 and why better nutrition and health alone aren’t enough to feel happy. (9:48)The quote that has become Matt’s mantra - and how it guides his life each day. (11:39)What Matt’s morning juice means to him (14:25)The critical role coffee plays in Matt’s day. (19:49)Why Matt lingers at the grocery store and how this plays into his new rules for food.
