In this SSPI-WISE Presents podcast, SSPI Director of Engagement Tamara Bond-Williams speaks with Penelope Longbottom, former Senior Advisor, Satellite Division at Sage Communications, now retired, and a Member of the Space & Satellite Hall of Fame and Andrea Maleter, former Technical Director at the Futron Corporation, now retired, and the 2010 SSPI Mentor of the Year. Penelope launched her eponymous firm Longbottom Communications, LLC, in 2000. It was a full-service branding, public relations and marketing communications firm that advised and served a spectrum of clients in the global space, satellite, telecommunications and broadband sectors. In 2015 the firm was acquired by McLean-based Sage Communications, at which time Ms. Longbottom took full retirement. In 2016 she was inducted into the SSPI Hall of Fame in honor of her contributions fostering global awareness and the benefits of satellite communications to governments, enterprises, public safety, disaster management and ever-evolving applications and markets. Penelope devoted over three decades to helping her employers, and later clients, drive strategic messaging and branding to foster market growth and help a skeptical public understand and utilize satellites for rapidly expanding communications capabilities. She applied her PR and marketing expertise first in the analogue world of television and cable broadcasting, through the evolution of digital direct-to-home TV and radio, mobile communications and multiple business applications and vertical markets. She entered the industry in 1985 as Director of Communications for Hughes Communications. Departing Hughes in 1996, Penelope was tapped by Lockheed Martin Corp. to help stand up and brand its newly created Lockheed Martin Intersputnik unit in London, a new partnership with Russia. Following that short-lived venture, Penelope was appointed VP of Lockheed Martin's Space & Strategic Missiles Division. In 1999, she joined XM Satellite Radio to brand and drive the go-to market strategy of this first U.S.-licensed digital satellite radio operator to launch.    Andrea Maleter spent some 40 years in the global satellite, telecommunications and aerospace industries. As a consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers and Futron she provided policy, regulatory, investment and marketing advice to telecommunications companies, satellite manufacturing businesses and governments worldwide on areas including strategies for new technology implementation; telecommunications sector policy and privatization. Prior to consulting she held management positions at INTELSAT and COMSAT where she participated in the development of global telecommunications satellite markets and the planning and procurement of new satellite systems. Andrea currently serves as Co-Chair of the SSPI-WISE Mentoring Working Group and has been instrumental in the formation and success of the SSPI-WISE Mentorship program.

Known for his aggressive style, his love of controversial subjects, and his hatred of Derek Jeter, comedian Jim Norton has earned a fanatical following thanks to his busy touring schedule and hilarious contributions to the Opie & Anthony radio show. He hit the standup circuit in 1989 and met comic Jim Florentine a year later. The two would become friends and roommates, and would tour together for several years while both were pursuing careers in show business. Norton 's big break arrived in 1999 when he became a frequent guest on the nationally syndicated Opie & Anthony radio show. He would officially join the O&A crew five years later as the show was making the jump to XM Satellite Radio. Appearances on television as a Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn panelist and a co-star on Louis C.K. More with the delightful Chris Monty. The anecdotes fly and you could cut the camaraderie with a butter knife. Many old pals are bandied about, the highlight being the late great ventriloquist act Vince Dantona & George. The acts these guys have traveled and worked with are the stars of their endless memories (!). Amazingly our fellows almost made it through a show with no mention of Peter's sad, sad rendezvous with Barbara Eden. Jackie “The Joke Man” Martling is best known for his 16 years as head writer and on-air personality for the Howard Stern Show. He is a veteran of the Long Island, NY comedy scene and has been a successful standup comedian and joke writer for more than 4 decades. The list of comedy legends he has worked with include Rodney Dangerfield, Eddie Murphy, Jerry Seinfeld, Bob Nelson, Richie Miniveri, Rob Bartlett, Dave Hawthorne, Jim Myers, Paul Reiser, Jackie Mason and many more. Martling started a telephone joke line (516) 922 Wine, that has been in operation since the early 80's and has recorded 4 comedy albums, and been featured in the films Private Parts and The Aristocrats. Peter Bales has appeared as a stand-up comedian at countless comedy clubs, corporate functions and colleges across the country and has appeared on a variety of television networks including FOX, A&E, Comedy Central, Lifetime, MTV, VH-1 and, most recently, "The New Rascals Comedy Hour" podcast for XM Satellite Radio. Peter has also hosted his own radio programs on NYC's WABC (770 AM) and WEVD (1050 AM). He studied at Chicago's famous "Second City" and in the eighties directed The Laughter Company, an improvisational comedy group that helped launch the careers of Rosie O'Donnell and Bob Nelson. Occasional penis and old lady jokes. Some audiences may be offended if we're lucky.

Gabe Abelson was in the trenches with us way back when the Professor created the act he used last night. Well, me, too. Gabe's credits are so staggering that I'd rather write a dopey paragraph about him joining us than give him his due .. because down deep, and on the surface, that's how comics are. Gabe was David Letterman's head monologue writer for five years. I hope I avoided writing that until after your attention span withered and you stopped reading about him. He's truly fascinating, as he's now paying the rent with a mentalism act, as well as television writing, acting & directing. This is a terrific episode. Click on it now, please. The sexual tension rapidly disappears when the gang recalls Pips in Brooklyn, the granddaddy of comedy clubs, and David Brenner pees in the stew. As a stand-up comedian for 40 years, Joey Kola has performed for hundreds of thousands of people throughout his career in the US, Canada and England. His high energy, spot on punch lines, and fast delivery assault an audience like a comedic freight train. Joey's topical and timeless material combine to always make his audiences laugh hard. Joey has worked at countless comedy clubs, colleges, casinos, theatrers, cruise ships and corporate functions. Kola's also proud of the success he's had in raising great amounts of money for the many different charities he currently supports. Joey Kola's TV credits include, "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno", The Late Show with David Letterman", "The King of Queens" with Kevin James, "The Martha Stewart Show", "Comedy Central Presents Joey Kola", "The Rosie O'Donnell Show", Comedy Central's "Premium Blend", The Rachael Ray Show, Jimmy Fallon and CBS's hit show "Kevin Can Wait" staring Kevin James, where Joey also plays the role of "Larry Anderson", the corn eating Assistant Principal on the show. Joey has been voted Best TV Comic 5 years in a row by Time Out NY magazine. He has warmed up many shows, such as "The Rosie O'Donnell Show", "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" with Meredith Viera, "The Late Show With David Letterman", "The Apprentice" and "Survivor" Finales, "The Jane Pauley Show" and CBS's "Wake-Up with Ali and Jack", "The Marriage Ref" produced by Jerry Seinfeld, "The Late Show" with Stephen Colbert and "The Chew". Joey continues to be a "regular" on and audience warm-up for Rachael as he goes into it's 15th season. One of the hardest working comics in show business today, over 300 shows per year for the last 40 years, Joey also finds time to write for other comics. George Carlin called Joey "One of the strongest comics I've seen". Joey has also toured many casinos with the cast of the Sopranos as part of their live show "Comedy You Can't Refuse". And Comedy and Conversation with The Sopranos. Kola continues to make audiences laugh today. Joey's family, his wife and 2 kids, are a great source for most of his material. Joey Kola can play to any crowd, young or old, his material is versatile. He can work 'clean' or 'blue'. Joey loves to promote his shows. His radio spots on various stations around the country have been enjoyed by millions. Written about in many news articles, magazines, and on the internet, Joey continues to please a wide range of people. No matter who the audience is, Joey's likeability comes across as his strongest asset. He always leaves everyone drunken with laughter.
