On this week's episode, MT's editorial team discusses which Big Four firms are on course to miss UK female partner goals, what CIOs want from consultants in 2025, and how a once-powerful name in consulting is making a comeback. We kick off this bumper consultancy episode with discussion of a story originally covered by the FT, which found that of the Big Four accounting firms, both EY and PwC are on track to miss their 2025 UK female partner targets. We also consider how gender imbalances might be impacting consulting firms' progress on pay parity, with an analysis of pay gap data collected as part of the process of compiling MT's inaugural Top 100 Management Consultancies list last year. What do chief information officers want from consultants? That's the question explored by Jon Bance in a recent piece for MT. He argues that CIOs increasingly demand more from external advisors, whom they expect to become fully immersed in their business, becoming a part of its culture and driving teams forward from within, while leveraging soft skills to build meaningful long-term relationships.Anyone who follows the consultancy sector will probably have heard the news by now: Andersen Consulting is making a comeback. The once-powerful name in the business will return to the sector after 25 years of dormancy. We discuss a piece by Paul Simpson that explores how the brand, once part of collapsed accounting firm Arthur Andersen, might navigate the considerable challenges in the market. Dave Skena remembers having his first Krispy Kreme doughnut at age 13, and even back then, he knew this company wasn't like the others. In college, he thought he was going to be an economist, but through his first job at Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), he realized marketing was where he really wanted to be. After going back to school, he began his new career at Kraft Foods, then went to PepsiCo for over eight years, where he led brands such as Lay's, Ruffles, SunChips, Tostitos, and Lay's Dips. He left CPG when he became Chief Marketing Officer at Ruby Tuesdays, where he helped them transition from public to private. Then moved on to his current role as Global Chief Brand Officer at Krispy Kreme. As a 20-year "performance-driven" innovator and marketer, Dave has flipped the script regarding traditional marketing in the category for an underdog brand by putting a premium on insights and creative-driven earned media strategies. In this episode, Alan and Dave discuss the uniqueness of the Krispy Kreme brand being both accessible and premium with the omnichannel hybrid model, where their brand promise of freshness is a top priority. Dave is a performance marketer, meaning his goal is to get the most out of every marketing dollar spent. Rather than focusing on the top of the funnel, he is constantly monitoring the performance of each move his team makes through A/B testing. Earned media, collaborations, and participation in culture are the top ways Krispy Kreme increases traffic and awareness. Power partnerships with big brands such as Oreo, Chips Ahoy, Herseys, and Good Humor are a win-win for all involved and compound the joy for consumers. Dave says "happiness is not a fixed pie", meaning there is plenty to go around. When it comes to capturing cultural moments, the Pandemic gave Krispy Kreme the perfect backdrop to counter with their extremely popular Acts of Joy, such as free donuts for all healthcare workers, graduates, and people who were vaccinated. By capitalizing on unity, Dave and his team are making news, reinforcing a culture of generosity, and driving sales at the same time.In this episode, you'll learn:How Dave's career prepared him perfectly for Krispy Kreme's omnichannel hybrid modelThe keys to authentically capturing cultural momentsWhat performance marketing is and how Dave maximizes his marketing budgetKey Highlights: [02:14] Dave's first Krispy Kreme Doughnut[05:30] From Economics to Doughnuts[09:35] What's unique about Krispy Kreme?[13:10] The key to capturing cultural moments[19:40] Partnerships and collaborations to increase joy (and sales)[24:00] Delivered Fresh Daily: getting into retail[25:45] Maximizing marketing and investments[30:45] Using credibility to multiply happiness[33:00] Being thrown into the deep end and learning you can swim[36:20] Marketing is the best thing you can do with a dollar.[37:50] Capitalize on unity[39:45] It's all about AI, but not in the way you thinkLooking for more?Visit our website for links to resources mentioned in this episode and ways to connect with the guest! So for organizations that are present across many different countries and many different continents, there will be one backbone which will be gender, the binary definition, to which they will be adding other aspects of the broader diversity spectrum based on the specificities of the countries of operations. For example, L'Oréal in the U.S., they look at the intersection between gender, race, and ethnicity. We have organizations in Europe that are very often looking at the intersection between age, gender, and sexual orientation. In Southeast Asia, sexual orientation and working with a disability are definitely emerging topics. So allowing ourselves this flexibility in saying we have a solid backbone - which is the one that can be legally measured and tracked across all geographies - which is the gender binary. And on this, we will be building this intersectional view with other beautiful characteristics that compose us as individuals. Having this flexibility allowed organizations such as L'Oréal, but then also some other institutions that we are working with within the UN system or international finance institutions, such as the IMF or the World Bank, to add different intersectional lenses to their gender binary approach."https://edge-cert.orgwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.org

Nobody, no institution, no culture, no society should limit you in your ability to do so. "I think that what is really important on this journey is to understand when we talk about gender and intersectional equity - and yes, gender is that element that is the most universal across different geographies. Having this flexibility allowed organizations such as L'Oréal, but then also some other institutions that we are working with within the UN system or international finance institutions, such as the IMF or the World Bank, to add different intersectional lenses to their gender binary approach."Aniela Unguresan is Co-founder of EDGE Certification, the leading global assessment methodology and business certification standard for gender equality. "I co-founded what has become EDGE for gender and intersectional equity back in 2009, and at that time workplace gender and intersectional equity were still very much seen as a societal issue rather than a business issue. Organizations were asking themselves if it's within their role to tackle these issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace, or if they are the mere recipients of what is going on in societies, following the beliefs around what men and women should be doing at work and at home.So at that time we wanted to contribute to this transition from making gender and intersectional equity a business issue and help organizations see that how they manage their talent and how they are able to attract, develop, motivate, and retain diverse talent is a key component of their sustainable business success."Aniela Unguresan is Co-founder of EDGE Certification, the leading global assessment methodology and business certification standard for gender equality. "For a very long time, the tech industry was publishing their numbers year after year, and the numbers stayed very much the same. And they were throwing their hands in the air and saying, 'Well, okay, we are measuring. We are publishing the numbers, numbers look bad. There's nothing we can do about it.' So there was transparency, but there was not the accountability of yes, there is something we can do about those numbers. It might take longer, and the progress might not be as fast as we can do, but there is something we can do about it. And here is the place we would start. But when the stakeholders start to have a voice then that accountability is created for organizations to move from intention to action and from action to impact."Aniela Unguresan is Co-founder of EDGE Certification, the leading global assessment methodology and business certification standard for gender equality. Do you find your organization still dumping your numbers into Excel, frustrated that you can't understand results, create meaningful insights, and make strategic business decisions from your data? Many finance professionals have dabbled in Microsoft Account Schedules but have not maximized this powerful feature in Dynamics 365 Business Central.  In this episode, our NVS experts share how you can use the best of both worlds, power up your processes with Account Schedules, and supercharge your financial reports to come out of your system accurately and fast. Essential points covered in this episode: ✔️ 5-time Microsoft MVP and New View Strategies CEO Kerry Peters loves helping organizations drive great financial insights from those static numbers on their spreadsheets. She has helped many companies use account schedules to their advantage and master them as a powerful feature on the platform making data easy to comprehend. ✔️ Many of our clients love our Accounts Schedule classes. They become excited about financial reporting and leave the room with smiles after they appreciate the power of accounts schedules and how simple it is to use, helping them work faster and get accurate results.  ✔️ So many financial professionals still manually create their reports on Excel every month. There are numerous reasons why people stop using their BC/NAV system and start putting their financials into Excel. Not many are familiar with account schedules and how they can comprehensively understand their financial data. They are frustrated that they can't understand results, create meaningful insights, and make strategic business decisions from their data. ✔️ Can you relate to CFO Bob's horror story and embarrassing professional moment? He made a mistake where he didn't link data correctly and reported some wrong numbers to the Board. He was also frustrated because he tried to delegate the financial reporting process to the team, but that got so complex that they couldn't get it done. Introducing the right way to use account schedules has allowed Bob and his team to develop accurate monthly reports. ✔️ Use account schedules as a research tool and stay ahead. When your people can learn going into Business Central and master the platform, they can look at data in real-time and get their questions answered when they need them and not have to wait until the end of the month to see the results.  ✔️ Our consultants and trainers from New View Strategies have been worldwide experts and proponents of Account Schedules for the past 15 years. Every day, we come across Microsoft Dynamics Business Central or NAV users who are still unfamiliar and are missing out on the power of this tool.  If you're looking to set up account schedules and improve your financial reporting process, connect with us at New View and experience expertly detailed and hands-on exercises you can immediately use back in the office. ———————————————————————————————— Mark Rhodes has been involved with helping companies realize their potential through the integrated use of people, processes, and technology for a long time – let's just decades and save you doing any math. Dimensions play an essential role in your BC/NAV system, making your process more automated and efficient. Our resident experts, Kerry Peters and Mark Rhoades sit down and share the power of dimensions in maximizing analysis views, simplifying how to use data tags that go into the system, and driving insights for more robust financial reporting.  Essential points covered in this episode: ✔️ The average BC/NAV customer consumes so much time on financial reporting at the month's end that it could have been used for other value-adding activities. Time spent for review, correcting errors, and producing the financials requires so much focus and energy that could be automated or delegated. ✔️ Businesses are changing hyper-fast, yet many companies fail to modify their chart of accounts to better match how they've grown and changed their operations. We see this with many organizations we've worked with, so few go back and reevaluate the structure they established 10 to 15 years ago and ensure that their financial system can maintain integrity today.  ✔️ An organization will change significantly every five years. NVS Chief Strategy Officer Mark Rhodes reminds you of rethinking the use of your dimensions in setting variables in your BC/NAV system. As you're going to get on down the road and there are a couple of those that you won't use anymore, look how you might still incorporate them in your financial reports.  Every year, take a look at your data and assess the following: Are our financial reports still relevant? Are the things that we're measuring making a difference?  Do we have new factors that we wish we were measuring more?  Incorporate these at any time and gather new insights, leave the old behind or combine to get a different vision of what's happening.  ✔️ Many users still don't understand how they can drive insights and make meaningful analyses from inside the system. We can make Dimensions as complicated as we want, but let's be super simple — Dimensions are data tags that go into the system with your financial transactions for the purpose of reporting. Every time you post a transaction in the system, Dimensions allows you to add information that goes along with that so that when you report against your results, you can get perfect, robust financial reporting based on all those data tags you're collecting.   ✔️ It's a golden opportunity to clean up that chart of accounts. Wherever you are in your new journey of going through the processes of setting up and familiarizing yourself with the Dimensions in Microsoft Dynamics 365, please take it as a golden opportunity to clean up your company's chart of accounts. It is the best time to clarify that everyone involved has the know-how and the ability to expand capabilities while streamlining what you have in the system.  ———————————————————————————————— Mark Rhodes has been involved with helping companies realize their potential through the integrated use of people, processes, and technology for a long time – let's just decades and save you doing any math. “I have a human first philosophy. Ultimately maths is the easier part of the equation, humans are hard”, says Amy. Amy shares her background as a management consultant with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) and joining Principal almost 21 years ago.  “I had a leader and a mentor, people around me had belief in me”, as Amy shares her rise to the c-suite and her biggest achievement. Amy talks about her reaction to being overlooked and how she reacts to negativity. “I don't block all of it out. I say ‘wait a minute, there's a market need. Someone, some day is going to fill it. Why on earth could it not be us.' My motivation is more externally focussed.” Sharing how Principal are using tech and digital, Amy comments, “Innovation often looks at the beginning or the end of processes, at customer acquisition or claims. We've been focussing on those middle processes – administration and servicing.” Amy talks about future challenges for insurance executives and the industry, urging us not to go back to pre-pandemic normal. She explains the characteristics Principal seek when looking for high-performing talent as well as her recruitment frustrations.  “We've been mathematicians more than story-tellers. We have plenty of technicians in the industry, we're light on people who understand the human experience.” Connect with Amy on https://www.linkedin.com/in/amy-friedrich-572270/ (LinkedIn) or find out more about https://www.principal.com/ (Principal Financial Group).
