I’ve been watching Matt Koff’s new comedy special Cat Man all week — it’s out now on YouTube — and this week I got to talk with Matt about it. He’s an Emmy-winning Daily Show writer and the winner of New York’s Funniest Standup 2023. We talked about the cultural discomfort around men who love cats, and the very real divide Matt has clocked between Manhattan audiences (who think men with cats are weird) and Brooklyn audiences (who emphatically do not). As a fellow middle-aged cat dad, I related more than I’d like to admit. We also got into how Cat Man came together: self-financed, shot in two shows on a single night at the Comedy Cellar, and made with a crew of longtime Daily Show colleagues who transformed the Village Underground into something out of David Lynch by way of The Muppet Show. And we talked about the shift from being angry about not being famous to being relieved about it — a turn that, for Matt, has a lot to do with the grease stains on his shirts. Matt Koff is a Brooklyn-based stand-up and Emmy-winning TV writer who has been at The Daily Show for 13 years. Said Koff, "I'm excited to share my special with the broader audience of YouTube. If this special doesn't bring about world peace, nothing will." Cat Man is an hour of fresh stand-up material from the Comedy Cellar regular about divorce, middle-age and cats. Koff believes there is a real bias against men with cats. He says "People love cats, but men with cats make people uncomfortable. Including me. I'm a man with a cat and I'm creeped out by myself!" The special is also a reprieve for Koff from his main subject of joke-writing at the Daily Show: Donald Trump. He says "It was nice to do an entire special that doesn't mention the president, whomever he may be. And judging from the state of the world, this could very well be my last comedy special, so I'm excited to get it out there." He added, "I will still be touring doomsday bunkers though." Cat Man was shot at The Comedy Cellar with some of Matt Koff's long-time Daily Show colleagues including director David Paul Meyer, producer Asad Bokhari, and lighting director George Countas, fresh off his win as New York's top Pedro Pascal lookalike. Art Director Becca Gialanella, also a Daily Show colleague, transformed the Cellar's Village Underground into a 1970s lounge. There are a number of other comics from his 23 years in the biz, including Jon Stewart himself (spoiler), that also make a guest appearance. Matt Koff had always dreamed of performing at the Comedy Cellar. He says "It took me years to get an audition there and I was so bitter about not getting in, sometimes I would walk past the Cellar and hiss at the club. Now I get to perform there and hiss at the audience when they don't like a joke." Dan McCoy has been writing and performing stand-up, sketch and improv in New York for over a decade. His webseries 9am Meeting, co-written with Matt Koff, placed 1st seven times at Channel 101 NY. The series joined the Writer's Guild of America, East as one of the very first new media signatories and was also awarded a development deal with MTV at the New York Television and Video Festival. Dan also co-hosts a fantastically funny bad movie podcast called The Flophouse. The bad movie conceit is used by the hosts to riff, make jokes and pitch fake films. He also is one of the newest writers on The Daily Show. Not too shabby a resume.
