Hello Listeners! In this episode, we had the opportunity to have a conversation with J. Bernardt J. Bernardt, also known as Jinte Deprez (from Balthazar), will release his second studio album, ‘Contigo' via Play It Again Sam. For information to listeners, Deprez is best known as one of the singer-songwriter duo of Balthazar, one of Belgium's most beloved and respected alt-rock bands for over two decades. As a group, they have performed at various prestigious events and venues such as All Points East, British Summer Time, Electric Ballroom, Village Underground, Scala, and have sold over 600,000 albums worldwide. J. Bernardt with ‘Contigo' - derived from the Spanish word meaning “with you”—is a dramatic, captivating, and colorful work, filled with drama and brought to life by the luxurious melodies, vocals, and production from the master auteur, inventor, and music singer. The lead single, titled “Don't Get Me Wrong,” once again showcases Bernardt's unique ability to blend pop orchestration with a touch of funk, creating something truly mesmerizing. Speaking about the song, Deprez explained, “‘Don't Get Me Wrong' explores a miscommunication skill that misses the mark, even sparked by the sabotaging desires of two people who choose projection over self-reflection . A classically trained violinist, Deprez has scored all the orchestration for Contigo. He is a generalist a (singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, arranger, producer, engineer, and programmer). He began producing Balthazar's first album in 2008 (co-producing three of their five albums to date), and his debut album (released in 2016) was entirely self-made. While the sound of Running Days was shaped by electronics, the new album Contigo is based on an old-school band – a group of Deprez's “highly talented” friends, whom he guided through intense rehearsals and performances, “searching for that spark,” ably assisted by producer and mixer Tobie Speleman. Onika McLean, born in North Carolina, and raised in East New York Brooklyn, is a single mother of two, legal professional, and a sharp comedian whose no-nonsense perspective on life, love, single motherhood, and her mid life crisis is taking the comedy arena by storm. She was the fan favorite on Bravo Television's, The Single's Project. She is the winner of the Sloshed Comedy Competition and the Rising Stars Comedy Competition in London. Onika performs regularly at LOL and Times Square and passed at Comic Strip Live and has Dangerfield's, New York Comedy Club, New York Stand, Broadway Comedy, Village Underground, and the. She runs a monthly show entitled Cosmic Comedy.   Laurie Kilmartin is stand up comedian and an Emmy-nominated, WGA award-winning comedy writer. She was a staff writer for all 11 years of CONAN on TBS, and has performed standup on CONAN, Late Late Show w/James Corden, and Comedy Central. She was a Top 10 finalist on season 9 of NBC's Last Comic Standing, and has been a guest on Marc Maron's WTF 3 times. She is the author of Dead People Sck, a comedic memoir about grief, and Shitty Mom- NY Times bestselling comedy about parenting. Her special 45 Jokes About My Dead Dad, was named Vulture 's Top Ten Comedy Specials of 2016. In 2022, she was a guest in the “Comedy” episdoe of Hillary Clinton's 2022 Apple TV series Gutsy. Her new special “Cis Woke Grief Slut,” taped at Hollywood's El Portal Theater, will be available on all platforms in January, 2024. Born and raised in the Bay Area, Laurie became interested in trying standup after seeing one too male comics talk about women. Even in San Francisco, the early 90s lineups were stacked with men lazily stereotyping approximately half the people in the audience. Laurie distinctly remembers sitting through a comedy showcase, thinking, “I don't like shopping, and I don't go to the bathroom in pairs.” Her need to try standup came from an intense desire to tell her own story, instead of hearing it being told to her by a dude. After a successful first time onstage, Laurie moved back in with her parents, bought a Chevy Blazer and started driving to gigs over the West. By the time she donated the Blazer to KCRW, there were over 500,000 miles on the odometer. She has worked one nighters, comedy clubs, casinos and wars. In fact, she performed for troops in both Iraq wars, including a New Year's Eve show at one of Saddam Hussein's occupied palaces. After ten years of basing herself inNorCal, she relocated to New York City in 1999. In 2003, she added TV writing to her resume, with her first staff job on Comedy Central's Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn. She moved onto “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” tried her hand at daytime on “The Bonnie Hunt Show” before being hired as a monologue writer on “CONAN,” for its entire 11 year run on TBS. In 2006, she became a mom, and in 2009, a single mom.In 2014, she famously (or infamously) live-tweeted jokes her father's hospice passing from lung cancer, and in 2020, she did the same after her mother was hospitalized with COVID. From these literal cremated ashes came her comedy special and second book (“45 Jokes About My Dead Dad” and “Dead People Suck”), and the 3rd titular element of her new special “Cis Woke Grief Slut.” Always hosted by Marina Franklin - One Hour Comedy Special: Single Black Female ( Amazon Prime, CW Network), TBS's The Last O.G, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Hysterical on FX, The Movie Trainwreck, Louie Season V, The Jim Gaffigan Show, Conan O'Brien, Stephen Colbert, HBO's Crashing, and The Breaks with Michelle Wolf.

As the co-founder and CEO of Groove, an online coworking community and mobile app for solopreneurs, Josh is building on his passion for community to help transform the way people on wavy career paths (solopreneurs, freelancers, creatives) can find support and human connection to help them accomplish great things. Josh's career itself follows a wavy path — after working as an engineer, he studied meditation as a way to combat his burnout, spending time learning at ashrams in India. He brought together his spiritual practices with bringing people together through cultural events and programming as Managing Director at London's Village Underground and working on festivals like Wilderness Festival. He continued freelancing as a strategy and innovation consultant. He believes in work-life harmony — how we work shapes how we live, and vice versa. He experienced this firsthand as an exec at WeWork in the office of the CEO working across the business. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Josh and his co-founders saw that the world had changed, along with our traditional work systems. Groove was created as a response to that, and is here to support the next generation of solopreneurs as they break open the ideas of how we can connect and work on energizing projects. = = = = = As always, Team PYP -- thank you for supporting the show! = = = = = My latest book, The Far Unlit Unknown -- is available everywhere books are sold! Was January 6th an Existential Threat to American Democracy?

Open to Debate

By now it is clear, the Red Wave election-denying candidates had hoped to ride left most still waiting on the beach. Those who questioned the outcome of the 2020 election lost key midterm races, which seemed to calm the nerves of many of those fearful as to where the Republic itself was headed. But as the parties begin to prepare for their respective presidential runs, a bigger question looms; one that has taken its cues from President Biden himself. Shortly after the January 6th attacks on the capitol — which were prompted by unfounded messaging about the election's illegitimacy — Biden sought to convey the severity of what had just happened. “The insurrection was an existential crisis — a test of whether our democracy could survive,” he said. Now, on the heels of the midterms, many not only openly wonder whether that democracy crisis is over, but also question if the words Biden chose were overblown in the first place. It is in that context, and as the 2024 elections come into focus, that we debate this question: Was January 6 an existential threat to American democracy?  On December 15th, Andrew Keen, Internet Entrepreneur, Author, and Host of the “How to Fix Democracy” podcast, squares off against Election Strategist, Managing Partner at CAE Strategies, and Vice President of the Fair Elections Center, Rebekah Caruthers, as part of the “No Laughing Matter” series at the Comedy Cellar at the Village Underground in New York.   Learn more about your ad choices.
