Dva měsíce po vyhlášení epidemie evidovala WHO přes 1926 nakažených a více než 700 mrtvých (data z 11. Pomoc zastavit její šíření můžete například příspěvkem v krizové sbírce organizace Lékaři bez hranic, která zasahují přímo v ohniscích nákazy a posiluje zdravotnickou péči v postižených oblastech. Savannah Guthrie in tears. Breaking news about her mother's disappearance was delivered on live TV, with Savannah right there at the anchor desk. She wiped away tears, saying that while the release of details from a ransom note is newsworthy, for her it's her life - and she and her loved ones are still in agony. Steven Fabian has more on the very emotional TV moment. And the verdict is in for the successful businessman accused of driving his boat recklessly during his daughter's 18th birthday party, killing one of her friends. During the trial he was overcome with emotion, at one point hyperventilating in front of the jury. As the not guilty verdict was read, he again broke into tears. Ann Mercogliano has the details. Plus, when a baby started choking, the desperate parents called not only 911, but ran outside and screamed to the neighbor across the street — why? Because she's a nurse. She came running and saved the day before the fire trucks even arrived. Jim Moret spoke with both women about the lifesaving moment they will never forget. And the last American passengers stuck on the Hantavirus cruise ship are finally going home, released from quarantine. They were taken from the ship directly to the nation's top bio-containment unit, and now they have all been released and are back home. After six weeks in quarantine, these are the hugs he's been waiting for. He spoke with Brooke Anderson.

A virus can feel “far away” right up until it lands in a preop bay with a fever, abdominal pain, and a story that only makes sense weeks later. We walk through what anesthesia, perioperative, and critical care teams need to know about hantavirus, why the incubation period (often 7 to 42 days) complicates detection, and how the Andes virus changes the conversation because it is the only hantavirus known to spread person to person. We start with the basics that matter at the bedside: common transmission pathways like inhalation of aerosolized particles from rodent droppings, the two major clinical syndromes (hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome), and the pathophysiology that drives non cardiogenic pulmonary edema, shock, thrombocytopenia, and organ failure. We also cover diagnosis (PCR and antibody testing), reporting to public health, and why supportive care remains the foundation, including when ECMO may be considered as a bridge to recovery. Then, we bring it into the perioperative space with clear, practical infection control guidance for operating rooms and procedural areas. We talk elective case delays after known exposure, emergency surgery planning with bleeding risk, negative pressure isolation rooms, and PPE choices like N95 or PAPR for clinicians. We also share concrete anesthesia circuit precautions recommended by occupational health experts, including HEPA filtration placement, safer gas sampling scavenging, and how to handle circuit disconnections to reduce room contamination. If you want a focused, evidence aware checklist for hantavirus preparedness in anesthesia care, hit play, share this with a colleague, and subscribe so you do not miss the next safety update.

Raise the Line
Assessing A Turbulent Year in Infectious Disease: Dr. William Schaffner, Professor of Preventive Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine

It's been one year since the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in an unprecedented move, dismissed all the members of its Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), kicking off what would turn out to be a very concerning and busy year for infectious disease specialists.  We're going to recap this turbulent period – which includes a resurgence of measles, an unusually rough flu season, the emergence of a new COVID strain and outbreaks of hantavirus and Ebola – with Dr. William Schaffner, one of the country's most frequently quoted medical experts on infectious disease, vaccination, and public health. As a member of ACIP for decades, Dr. Schaffner brings unique insight into the dismantling of the committee and the distrust of vaccines that lies at the root of the changes. As he explains to Raise the Line host Lindsey Smith, while many vaccine critics are beyond reach, there are those he describes as vaccine hesitant that may be persuadable if the right approach is taken. “Beyond providing facts, we have to listen to them and respond to their concerns and make them feel comfortable. Information is fundamental, but behavior change only comes with a change in attitude.” Tune in for a wealth of wisdom and context that includes observations on: What's complicating containment of the Ebola outbreak; Challenges in public health communication in the current social media environment; What grade health authorities should get on their response to the hantavirus outbreak. Ebola is a frightening and deadly disease, killing on average one half of people infected and spreading rapidly without containment measures. So how do BBC journalists report from the centre of an epidemic? BBC West Africa journalist Emery Makumeno has been reporting from Kinshasa in DR Congo on the Ebola outbreak; Musa Sangarie, Country Director for Sierra Leone for BBC Media Action, led public information campaigns in Sierra Leone in the 2014-16 Ebola epidemic; Camilla Mota, journalist with BBC News Brasil, has reported on the fall-out from the country's Zika virus outbreak in 2015 and 2016; and Mattias Zibell Garcia, producer at BBC Mundo, reported on the recent Hantavirus outbreak in Ushuaia, Argentina. The Fifth Floor is at the heart of global storytelling on the BBC World Service, bringing you the best stories from journalists in the BBC's 43 language services. We're here to help you make sense of the stories making headlines around the world; to excite your curiosity and to get to grips with the facts. Recent episodes have investigated Russia's youth armies and how they make soldiers of Ukrainian children; featured the BBC team who were the first journalists to the site of the Nigerian school kidnappings and reflected the effects of internet blackouts in Iran, Uganda and India. If you want to know more about Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, and the legacy of Hugo Chavez; or how Vladimir Putin's network of deep cover spies operates; or why Donald Trump signed an executive order granting white South Africans asylum in the US, we have all those stories and more.Presented by Faranak Amidi. Host: Darryl S. Chutka, M.D.  Guest: Stacey Rizza, M.D.  We've now had our second outbreak of a potentially deadly infectious disease. Hantavirus has been diagnosed in several individuals and most recently just under 100 cases of Ebola Virus have been confirmed along with several hundred suspected cases. Ebola virus is caused by several species of the Ebola Virus and is frequently fatal.  Early symptoms are non-specific and similar to other common viral infections, making an early diagnosis challenging. Who's at risk of acquiring Ebola Virus? How is it spread from person to person? How deadly is the virus and finally, does it have the potential to become our next pandemic?  In this podcast, we're going to learn more about Ebola Virus. The Marketing Secrets Show

In 2020, something got installed in your brain — a switch. And every time the media needs a click, they flip it, because they know it still works. This week it's Ebola. Three weeks ago it was hantavirus. The CDC says the risk to Americans is extremely low. The WHO went on camera and said this is not the next Covid. But that's not what the headlines say… because calm doesn't get clicks. Fear does. In this episode I show you the machine behind the fear — the funnel, the business model, the exact script. I teach a framework called Hook, Story, Offer, and when I looked at how the media covers these virus stories, I realized they're running the same three steps I teach marketers… except they're not selling a product, they're selling fear. Then I bring in two books — a 1962 warning from French philosopher Jacques Ellul, and my friend Ryan Holiday's confessions of a media manipulator — to explain not just how they do it, but why. And as a dad, the part that keeps me up at night is who's paying the price. Key Highlights: ◼️The “Fear Funnel” — how the media runs the same Hook, Story, Offer I teach, except the hook is a scary headline, the story buries the CDC's “extremely low risk” at the bottom, and the offer is a subscription to your own anxiety ◼️”Pre-propaganda” — Jacques Ellul's 1962 idea that the most powerful conditioning happens before the message ever arrives… and why Covid installed the switch the word “virus” still flips today ◼️What Ryan Holiday's “Trust Me, I'm Lying” exposes — the media doesn't sell information, it sells attention, and the cheapest attention is fear and outrage that bypass rational thought (your amygdala clicks before you do) ◼️The numbers behind a dying industry — media trust falling from 72% in the 1970s to 28% today (just 8% among Republicans), and fear as the last lever that still works ◼️The “Disclosure Test” — the one question to run on your own urgency: if your audience knew exactly how and why you created it, would they still respect you? Here's the uncomfortable part: urgency itself isn't the enemy. Deadlines work, scarcity drives action, and I use urgency in my business every single day. The line is whether it's real. A cart that's actually closing is real. “The next pandemic” when the CDC says the risk is extremely low — when fear just happens to pay the bills — is manufactured. Ellul predicted this in 1962, Holiday exposed it in 2012, and we're watching it run in real time in 2026, with the most anxious generation in recorded history footing the bill. So the real question isn't whether the next virus is dangerous. It's this: which is more dangerous right now — the virus, or the coverage… and which side of that line is your own marketing on? ◼️DOTCOM SECRETS: The media stole Hook, Story, Offer and turned it into a fear machine — Russell wrote the book on how to use it the RIGHT way. DotCom Secrets breaks down exactly how funnels really work, so you can build a real business that helps people instead of being manipulated by one. A deep dive into the astrology forecast for June 2026, with astrologers Chris Brennan and Leisa Schaim. We spend the first hour talking about the astrology behind news and events that happened since our last forecast, and then in the second hour we get into the astrology of June. The month opens with one of the most auspicious planetary alignments of the year: a Venus-Jupiter conjunction in Cancer that remains active for the first two weeks. Venus-Jupiter conjunctions are excellent for relationships, marriages, and partnerships, as well as peacekeeping efforts and the confirmation of good things. In the middle of the month, there is a distinct tone shift when Venus enters Leo and begins opposing Pluto. This aspect can bring up issues related to power, manipulation, and control within the context of partnerships and relationships. At the same time, Mercury enters its shadow period, slowing down and preparing to station retrograde, while Mars moves within a 10-degree orb of a volatile conjunction with Uranus. The latter part of the month takes an unexpected and explosive turn, especially once Mars officially enters Gemini and the conjunction with Uranus tightens. On the final day of the month, Jupiter enters Leo, beginning a one-year transit through that sign. However, this transit starts with an opposition to Pluto that will culminate in July, highlighting themes involving the manipulation of truth and attempts to control knowledge. Simultaneously, Mercury stations retrograde just before it can reach a conjunction with Jupiter, effectively revoking and delaying a beneficent alignment just as the much more malefic Mars-Uranus configuration is forming. Two disease outbreaks are dominating the news: Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and hantavirus, which started spreading on a cruise ship. The U.S. has a one-of-a-kind medical facility that exists just for emergencies like this. It's called the National Quarantine Unit, and it's in Omaha, Nebraska. Right now, 18 Americans from the cruise ship where hantavirus broke out are in quarantine there.  Host Flora Lichtman chats with Angie Vasa, a nurse and administrator who has worked at this emergency center for the last 17 years. They discuss how the facility works, what's happening with the travelers exposed to hantavirus, and how they're preparing for the possibility of Ebola-exposed individuals.   Guest: Angie Vasa is the director of emergency preparedness and special pathogens programs at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska.  Other episodes you may enjoy: Mapping Out How Viruses Jump Between Species How Viruses Have Shaped Our World Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com.
