Our guest on this episode of the Addicted Mind podcast is Maureen Cavanagh, author and founder of Magnolia New Beginnings. Maureen's family had a long history of addiction, but since she was not personally prone to addiction, she thought that she knew the formula to help keep her kids away from addiction as well. However, her world was suddenly shaken when one of her daughters came to her to admit that she had been experimenting with heroin. Even living in an upper middle-class neighborhood, opioids were not difficult for her daughter to find, and once she tried heroin for the first time, the road to sobriety and recovery proved to be steep. Just when Maureen thought her daughter had a handle on her addiction, it would rear its ugly head again and she would see just how much of a hold it had on her precious child, who was now an adult. Maureen did what she believed any good parent would do: she dropped everything and rushed to her daughter's aid, providing her with whatever she needed and paying for her to get into a treatment center again. She found out that her daughter had a “friend” who was providing her with the drugs, protecting her from her family when they came looking for her, and reviving her if and when she overdosed. Even with this barrier between them, Maureen knows of 13 times when her daughter was admitted to the hospital after an overdose and at least 40 separate stints at treatment centers before something finally clicked. Maureen realized that she was on her own journey during this time which was intended to be separate from her daughter's journey. The more Maureen tried to hold on and help her daughter get out of whatever situation she was in at the time, the farther away her daughter seemed to drift. However, when Maureen was able to let go and provide her daughter with some space, not jumping to her rescue but rather empowering her daughter to rescue herself, that was the moment when her daughter started getting better. Somewhere after treatment center #40, the rehab took, and for the past 2 years her daughter has been sober with the help of her family, her therapist, her recovery coach, and her community. Maureen went against her instinct to keep family business private when she was approached by a publishing agent about sharing her story, and the hundreds of people who have messaged her since the book came out are proof that the world needed to hear the honest truth about what it is like to be the parent of an addict. In addition to her book, Maureen provides resources and support groups through her non-profit, Magnolia New Beginnings, which is impacting tens of thousands of people. Meet Maureen Cavanaugh, an educator, recovery coach, public speaker, founder of Magnolia New Beginnings and the author of “If You Love Me: A Mother's Journey Through Her Daughter's Opioid Addiction.” Living through the nightmare of her daughter's addiction, Cavanaugh made it her life's work to inspire parents and families of those struggling with addiction to become advocates on their behalf. Her story in the addiction recovery world began after learning of her daughter's struggles. Knowing that she could not fix the problem but needing to do something positive, Cavanaugh channeled her energy into advocacy. What started as a 50-person support group in Massachusetts has grown into nearly 30,000 people, nationwide, with her work featured in the New York Times and on CNN. Rather than following some of the “conventional wisdom” to isolate addicts and cut off their resources, Cavanaugh preaches a philosophy of healthy boundaries and support. As Cavanaugh has seen many times over, it gets better.Find out more about Magnolia New Beginnings at 617-291-3266, email: info@magnolianewbeginnings.org or go to: http://www.magnolianewbeginnings.org/ for more information.Remember that help is ALWAYS available 24/7 with our partners at Sunrise Detox Center. Rebuilding a life after addiction - Katie Cavanagh acted like a typically moody first-year college co-ed when she came home to visit during school breaks. Little did her parents know at the time that what had begun as as perhaps a peer-driven experiment with heroin, would eventually grow into Katie’s long and near-fatal battle with addiction to this insidious drug. Indeed, the next five years included arrests, suicide attempts and multiple trips to rehab programs. Katie believed she couldn’t stop. But she did. And in tribute to National Recovery Month, dedicated to increasing our awareness of addiction – and celebrating the people who recover – we bring you this moving and inspirational interview with her amazing mother, Maureen Cavanagh, the founder and president of Magnolia New Beginnings and author of If You Love Me: A Mother's Journey Through Her Daughter's Opioid Addiction. On this segment, Maureen not only chronicles Katie’s road to recovery, but how, after years of turmoil, hardship and heartbreak, she and her daughter have rebuilt their lives. Hear how Katie, with the help of VIVITROL, has stayed drug-free, and what Maureen learned from this life-altering experience that we hope will help so many others going through a similar, heart-wrenching situation. It is the ultimate mother/daughter story of pain, love – and, most importantly, hope!

Maureen Cavanagh joins us to talk about her devastating new memoir "If You Love Me: A Mother's Journey Through Her Daughter's Opioid Addiction", a deeply moving mother-daughter story about love, strength, and hope.
Music has a way of bringing people together, and is a language we share. Recovery has its own language, within its own culture of addiction. We are all affected by substance use disorder (SUD) - personally, through family and friends, and as a society, economically and politically. The numbers tell part of the story, however it’s the people that who have lived this struggle and the people who fight for recovery and education everyday that bring this story to the surface - into our living rooms, boardrooms, schools and the stage. Above The Basement met with people who care deeply about this cause: those in recovery, the doctors who treat and support our patients and families who have lost loved ones, and musicians who have had first hand experience of with addiction and understand the toll it can have on careers and families. Our discussions began in August 2018 with Kristen Williams Haseotes, the founder of Above the Noise Foundation, Maureen Cavanagh, author of "If You Love Me - A Mother's Journey Through Her Daughters Opioid Addiction and Robin Houston-Bean who honors her son every day having started The Sun Will Rise Foundation, Inc.. We continued our discussions, learning along the way with addiction medicine experts Dr. Sarah Wakeman and Dr. Laura Kehoe from the Mass General Substance Use Disorders Initiative. At RecoveryFest 2018 we sat with Fitz (Fitz & The Tantrums), Livingston Taylor, B-Rain, Grace Kelly and several others in recovery. There is a sense of pride in all of these voices, and our guests are people with hopes and dreams, successes and failures, ups and downs just like the rest of us. The synergy of music and the message of recovery was undeniably powerful and special on September 29th at Recovery Fest 2018. There was palpable energy without substances, elation without drugs, and all around us, simply so many reasons to care. Click below to listen and please share. Whether we realize it or not, the current opioid crisis affects us all. And while many people donate their time and resources to fight this huge problem, we met two women who imagined something unique and bigger. In November 2017, Kristen Williams-Haseotes created the Above The Noise Foundation – an organization that promotes awareness, education and advocacy for this addiction crisis that has touched so many lives. Maureen Cavanagh is a mom, advocate and author of the recently published book If you love me: A Mother's Journey Through Her Daughter's Opioid Addiction. They are both determined to wipe out stigma and proudly share this mission. They were joined by a passionate team, coming together to give rise to the first large scale sober music festival - paying tribute and raising awareness to addiction and stigma and to honor and support those who have made to the “other side” - recovery. We were honored to sit across from these women as we learned about their personal journeys, their message of recovery, and the road that led them to their wonderful event in Pawtucket, RI on 9/29/18 - Recovery Fest 2018 with Macklemore, Fitz & the Tantrums, & PVRIS.
The Power Hour welcomes Maureen Cavanagh on this episode. Maureen talks about what the association brings to its members and the industry as well as their goals for 2017.
The mission of the Vision Impact Institute is to raise awareness about the importance of healthy vision, including the socio-economic impact of Uncorrected Refractive Errors and quality of life benefits of visual correction. Their president, Maureen Cavanagh is the guest on our next episode. She'll discuss how they aim to be the voice of vision by gathering and communicating pertinent information to all stakeholders, including government policy makers, optical industry associates and the general public, to mobilize a world-wide movement on visual impairment advocacy.
Author Maureen Cavanagh shares her experience treating a pregnant woman with terminal ovarian cancer, and how the patient inspired in staff a commitment to patient-centered care.
Our guest on this episode of the Addicted Mind podcast is Maureen Cavanagh, author, and founder of Magnolia New Beginnings. Maureen’s family had a long history of addiction, but since she was not personally prone to addiction, she thought that she knew the formula to help keep her kids away from addiction as well. However, her world was suddenly shaken when one of her daughters came to her to admit that she had been experimenting with heroin. Join The Addicted Mind Podcast Facebook Group>>> ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheAddictedMindPodcast/ ) Even living in an upper-middle-class neighborhood, opioids were not difficult for her daughter to find, and once she tried heroin for the first time, the road to sobriety and recovery proved to be steep. Just when Maureen thought her daughter had a handle on her addiction, it would rear its ugly head again, and she would see just how much of a hold it had on her precious child, who was now an adult. Maureen did what she believed any good parent would do: she dropped everything and rushed to her daughter’s aid, providing her with whatever she needed and paying for her to get into a treatment center again. She found out that her daughter had a “friend” who was providing her with the drugs, protecting her from her family when they came looking for her, and reviving her if and when she overdosed. Even with this barrier between them, Maureen knows of 13 times when her daughter was admitted to the hospital after an overdose, and at least 40 separate stints at treatment centers before something finally clicked. *Calming The Addicted Mind - 6 Day Mindfulness Email Series* theaddictedmind.com/mindfulness ( http://theaddictedmind.com/mindfulness ) Maureen realized that she was on her journey during this time, which was intended to be separate from her daughter’s journey. *Episode Link* theaddictedmind.com/67 ( http://theaddictedmind.com/67 ) Somewhere after treatment center #40, the rehab took, and for the past two years her daughter has been sober with the help of her family, her therapist, her recovery coach, and her community.
