The connection between alcohol and gut health is established in scientific literature: alcohol is an inflammatory agent. But as researchers like Vincent Maffei work to improve the quality of life for HIV patients, every bit of information of how that inflammation develops makes a difference, especially in how alcohol and bowel problems connect. Listeners will learn The difference between chronological and biological health and how HIV patients experience increased biological aging, The connection between alcohol and G.I. issues, particularly less diverse microbiota, and The significance of their findings, specifically the abundance of Prevotella spp., a bacteria that may be a mediator between alcohol and cell senescence. Vincent J. Maffei is with the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Parasitology at LSU. As a graduate student, he became involved in LSU's Comprehensive Alcohol Research Center (CARC) and studied how dysbiosis accompanies biological aging. He combined this with studying how alcohol affects the intestines, and now studies this specifically with HIV patients. More specifically, he works to find associations between alcohol use and advancing aging in HIV patients and their guts. He explains to listeners about several players in this complex mix of cause and effect: alcohol and gut health as well as alcohol and HIV patients. He establishes that any amount of alcohol can be harmful to someone suffering from HIV. Combine that with an already-established connection with alcohol and dysbiosis in the gut, and researchers are faced with a very real problem to solve for these patients. He does a careful job explaining the background to listeners, bringing in other studies more general to alcohol use and explaining its effect on T-cell senescence, which basically means they lack the ability to copy themselves—limiting their ability to fight infection. Senescence is also a characteristic of biological aging. He explains that the administration of alcohol breaks down the gut barrier, allowing microbes to migrate from the lumen of gut into tissue, which causes inflammation. He also explains their worthy end goal: to identify some sort of microbiota intervention to relieve this component of inflammation in HIV patients, improving their life span and quality of life. Primeiro, no caso da atuação da Polícia Rodoviária Federal para atrapalhar o voto de eleitores do Nordeste no dia do 2° turno de 2022. Na quinta-feira passada, Bolsonaro foi ligado a crimes diversos no depoimento-bomba do hacker Walter Delgatti Neto na CPI dos Atos Golpistas. E, por fim, na explosiva investigação sobre o Rolex vendido e recuperado ilegalmente nos EUA, Bolsonaro viu Frederick Wassef fazer uma desastrada confissão e o advogado de Mauro Cid afirmar que fora ele, o ex-presidente, que mandou seu ex-ajudante de ordens vender o relógio. Para fazer a análise jurídica e política da situação de Bolsonaro, Natuza Nery conversa com o advogado Rafael Mafei, professor da Faculdade de Direito da USP e da ESPM, e com o jornalista e consultor Thomas Traumann, pesquisador da FGV-RJ. Em relação ao bolsonarismo, ele afirma, “não podemos supor que fatos sejam suficientes para mudar convicções” e compara a situação dele a de Trump nos EUA, onde o republicano cresceu nas pesquisas de opinião pública; - O jornalista compara o episódio da condenação de Lula - no qual houve um hiato de 2 anos entre a prisão coercitiva e a definitiva, em 2018 - com a situação atual de Bolsonaro: “Acho que a tática é um pouco essa”. Ou seja, uma eventual decisão para prendê-lo só deve acontecer após a exposição pública de depoimentos e evidências, caso contrário “haverá comoção popular”.

Coach is joined by John Maffei of the Union Tribune to bring us up to date on the high school basketball playoffs.

So who graduates from UMass in 1971 with a BS in Plant and Soil Science, takes an assistant job at a very private/secretive 500 acre facility on the NY/CT border, gets promoted to superintendent three months later, grows in a new back nine... and then stays for 51 years? We'll tell you who: Mike Maffei, CGCS, recently retired golf course superintendent at Morefar in Brewster, NY. Google "Morefar" and you won't come up with much. "A lot of newcomers to Brewster don't even know it's there," quipped Maffei. "We keep a low profile." Only two months into retirement, Maffei still says "we" rather than "them". 51-year habits are hard to break. This is a fascinating story of managing a corporation-owned property that intentionally flew under the radar, and existed solely for the entertainment of corporate guests. "I think we had 350 rounds on 9 holes the first year I was here," Mike recalled. "That grew to maybe 7,000 in our heyday in the late '80s/early '90s, but settled down to the 2500 or so we do today." Mike Maffei is also known for his association activities, serving in virtually all offices and on most committees of the MetGCSA, Hudson Valley GCSA and the New York State Turfgrass Association (NYSTA). He was instrumental in organizing a Turfgrass Advocacy Lobby Day for state legislators in Albany, which continues today.  He is continuing with his committee activities while in retirement.
