This week on the show, I'm excited to welcome back my “long lost cousin” John Mascari. John will be sharing his thoughts on the proposed changes to the PGA Tour for 2026, which include reducing field sizes, the number of Tour cards available, and the number of Monday qualifiers, among other changes. As someone on the Board of Directors for the New Jersey PGA Section and the Director of Golf at Alpine Country Club, John has a unique perspective on how these changes could impact the game. Speaking of Alpine, there's a rumor that a sequel to a certain movie featuring a hockey player-turned-professional golfer was recently filmed there, and John might give us a hint about that. We'll also chat about the growing excitement for next year's Ryder Cup. Plus, as a big Yankees fan, John's going to have to endure a little ribbing from me—a Red Sox fan—about their recent loss in the World Series. John will join me in just a few minutes. Following John, we have the pleasure of hearing from 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist figure skater Scott Hamilton. Scott is genuinely one of the most inspiring people I know. He's overcome countless challenges in his life and still reached the pinnacle of his sport. We'll talk about the obstacles he's faced, his incredible optimism and faith, and the Hall of Fame inductions that continue to recognize his remarkable achievements. Scott's story is one of resilience, positivity, and triumph, and I'm thrilled to share it with you all.

This week Karen is talking to Anne Onwusowulu, an alumni of Karen's Artisan Perfume Mastermind course. Anne is the founder of fragrance company House of Purple Rose and, along with her husband John, runs a second company, the Skin and Hair Manufacturing Hub. However, both of Anne's companies, and all the services they offer, were born out of personal tragedy or challenges she faced on her entrepreneurial journey. In this interview with Karen, Anne inspires as she details the way in which she took every challenge and turned it into an opportunity.   KEY TAKEAWAYS When Anne moved into her new house she found that the open plan nature of it led the smells of food to drift all through the house. She wanted to overcome this problem and started to research candles and diffusers; what she found, however, led her to set up her company, House of the Purple Rose.  When Anne tragically lost her mother, the stress she experienced from this led her to have problems with her skin. Determined to do something about it she went from trying a multitude of different skin care products to launching her own range.  When Anne started House of the Purple Rose she found it impossible to source suppliers that would give her small quantities of materials, as most demanded orders in the thousands. Once again, Anne took this problem and saw an opportunity and formed the Skin and Hair Manufacturing Hub. Another of the many services that Anne's companies offer is to formulate a product for indie brands. She talks about this process and some of the brands she has helped to launch. BEST MOMENTS  “People don't realise the high level of technical skill involved in creating skin care products with a scent.” “When creating a fragrance for skin care the goal is to keep it small so that the notes don't clash.” “Everyone needs to take notice of regulations, it is the best thing you can do for your clients.” EPISODE LINKS House of Purple Rose Website House of Purple Rose Instagram Skin and Hair Manufacturing Hub Website Skin and Hair Manufacturing Hub Instagram Skin and Hair Manufacturing Hub YouTube VALUABLE RESOURCES Getting Started Guide Artisan Perfumery Mastermind   ABOUT THE GUEST Anne Onwusowulu is a seasoned cosmetic chemist and perfumer with over a decade of experience in the beauty industry. She is the founder of the House of Purple Rose, a renowned skincare and home fragrance brand. In 2021, Anne and her husband launched the Skin and Hair Manufacturing Hub (SHMH), where she serves as the creative and scientific leader. Anne's extensive background as a cosmetic chemist, herbalist, and aromatherapist has enabled her to create successful products for independent brands. Her passion for discovering and blending the finest ingredients drives her work. Anne is dedicated to making high-quality beauty and home fragrance products accessible to everyone, leading pioneering changes in the industry. ABOUT THE HOST Fragrance expert, author, teacher and speaker; Karen Gilbert runs courses in the UK and online which demystify the secretive world of perfumery in a fun and interactive way.  Karen has inspired thousands of students to explore their olfactory sense and create their own personalised fragrances. With extensive product development experience in both the commercial perfumery and the organic skincare industry, Karen is able to offer a unique insight into creating natural and mixed media fragrances for fine fragrance, room scents and skincare/bodycare products using commercial perfumery techniques. Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I'm excited to share this amazing guest with you. My guest today is Jason Wood. He's a dad, combat vet and endurance athlete. Jason Wood's incredible fitness journey is nothing short of a remarkable adventure that unfolded after his graduation from college in 2004. Fueled by a sense of duty and patriotism, Jason joined the U.S. Army as an officer, dedicating seven years to active duty and undergoing three intense combat tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. This period taught him invaluable lessons in discipline, resilience, and the importance of pushing one's limits. In 2011, Jason transitioned to a career as a Department of Defense contractor, marking a turning point in his life. It was during this period that he discovered a profound passion for endurance challenges, using them as a vehicle for personal growth and transformation. One defining moment in Jason's fitness journey was his completion of a staggering 101-mile run in just 36 hours while wearing a 20-pound tactical weight vest. Undeterred by the magnitude of his accomplishments, Jason set an even more daunting goal, running an astounding 150 miles in 48 hours on a treadmill. Jason's pursuit of challenges continues with his upcoming attempt to break the Guinness World Record for solo tire flipping—a 100kg (220lb) tire for 24 consecutive hours. As a father to a 9-year-old daughter, Jason's journey transcends personal achievement. His successful summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2021 inspired his daughter to embark on her own mountain-climbing adventure at just 7 years old, demonstrating the impact of leading by example. Jason couldn't have been prouder of his daughter for approaching the challenge with such enthusiasm. Jason's dedication to being a strong father goes beyond the physical accomplishments; it extends into the realm of teaching life lessons about perseverance, setting goals, and the importance of giving back. His daughter witnesses firsthand that a strong foundation built on discipline and determination can lead to personal growth and the ability to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Behind these triumphs lies a more profound story of resilience. Jason has faced personal struggles, including alcoholism, suicidal thoughts, and the weight of PTSD, depression, and anxiety from his military experiences. The outdoors and fitness became his sanctuary, offering a lifeline to mental stability and recovery. Jason's journey reflects not only the boundless potential of the human spirit but also the profound healing power of the outdoors and physical fitness. His battles with alcoholism and PTSD found solace in the discipline and structure of his fitness regimen. The endorphins released during intense workouts became a powerful antidote to the darkness of depression and anxiety, allowing him to regain control of his mental health. Jason's mission extends beyond personal triumph. Through his journey, he seeks to inspire others to overcome their own battles and embrace a brighter future. Triumph Over Adversity: The Inspiring Journey of 'The Boys in the Boat' The Not Old Better Show, Movie Review and Interview Series: Author of the book, The Boys in the Boat,' Daniel James Brown, and star of the film Callum Turner Welcome to today's book and film review episode of The Not Old Better Show, the destination for stories that not only captivate but also enlighten us, especially as we navigate the rewarding journey of our later years. I'm Paul Vogelzang and in this episode, we're delving into a tale that transcends the realm of sports, embodying the essence of human tenacity: "The Boys in the Boat" by Daniel James Brown. We will be speaking with Daniel James Brown in just a bit, but first a little catch up, as the book is a few years old, and the film verions arrives this Christmas.  This riveting book unfolds the true story of the University of Washington's 1936 eight-oar crew and their remarkable pursuit of gold at the tumultuous Berlin Olympics. But this is more than a story of athletic triumph; it's a profound exploration of an era marked by the shadows of the Great Depression and the rise of Nazi Germany. It eloquently juxtaposes the personal, gritty struggles of a group of young men with the broader political and social turmoil of their times, creating a narrative tapestry that is as historically significant as it is emotionally impactful. As we journey through this episode, we'll delve into the depths of their personal battles, the unyielding spirit of teamwork, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. This story reaches beyond the enthusiasts of sports, touching the hearts of all who hear it. It speaks to us, the generation who understands the essence of perseverance and the importance of standing together in the face of adversity. So, let's settle in and embark on this inspiring journey, a testament to the human spirit's boundless potential. This story is a reminder that no matter the odds, with unity and determination, triumph is within our grasp. My hope is that this story, movie, and my review will serve as nspiring you to reflect on your own journeys and the power of persistence? This story could serve as a powerful reminder that it's never too late to pursue one's dreams, regardless of the obstacles in the way. As many of you are aware after reading this bestseller, Boys In the Boat book, but Daniel James Brown. In 1936 nine working-class American boys burst from their small towns into the international limelight, unexpectedly wiping the smile off Adolph Hitler's face by beating his vaunted German team to capture the Olympic gold medal.  Daniel James Brown has written a robust, emotional snapshot of an era, a book you will recommend to your best friends. This book, this story, as well as the film are riveting, it not only recounts a historical triumph but also reignites the fire of inspiration within us. Daniel James Brown's masterpiece, a non-fiction narrative, does just that. It's not merely about the 1936 Olympics in Berlin or the remarkable victory of a University of Washington crew team; it's a testament to the power of perseverance and unity. As you'll hear Daniel James Brown's vivid portrayal of this era in just a few moments, we'll encounter the eight rowers and a coxswain, each with a unique story, all united by a single goal. Their story is set against a backdrop of a world on the brink of change – from the shores of Seattle to the tension-laden atmosphere of Nazi Germany.  It's a story that resonates with all of us, especially as we reflect on our journeys and the hurdles we've overcome. Moreover, Brown's work offers us more than just a story. It's an exploration into the human spirit, a reminder that, regardless of age, the pursuit of excellence and the joy of achievement are always within our grasp. The comparison to Laura Hillenbrand's 'Seabiscuit: An American Legend' is apt – both stories are about underdogs, determination, and triumph against the odds. This story, the book, and now the film are not just a small thing; it's an experience. It's an opportunity to delve into a pivotal moment in history, to understand the intricacies of a sport like crew, which, much like life itself, requires strategy, teamwork, and a harmonious rhythm of many, working as one. So, I invite you to immerse yourself in Daniel James Brown's 'The Boys in the Boat'. It's more than a story about a crew team; it's about the resilience and the collective spirit that defines us all, especially as we navigate the later chapters of our lives. Go see 'Boys in the Boat,' in theaters on Christmas Day!
