Ole Miss baseball has won six of its first seven games, including a three-game sweep of lowly Eastern Kentucky over the weekend. The Rebels gave up seven combined runs over three days, the fewest in a series in two years. They finished with a collective 2.33 ERA to go along with 42 strikeouts and a .177 opponent batting average.Long-time Rebel hitting coach Mike Clement joins this Monday, February 24 edition of ‘Talk of Champions' to provide some key takeaways and snap judgements from the hot start. Ole Miss has been more powerful than Clement expected early on, Hunter Elliott has looked himself, Hayden Federico has sparked the lineup and the switch to Joel Mangrum as pitching coach is already paying off.‘Talk of Champions' is always powered by RiverLand Roofing. Ole Miss hitting coach Mike Clement joins us on the Cannon Motors of Rebel Yell Hotline to preview the 2025 baseball season.
Ole Miss baseball next week officially opens practices in advance of the 2025 season. The Rebels will go for about a month, including an instrasquad scrimmage, before getting things started against Arizona in the Shriners Children's College Showdown on February 14.Ole Miss is coming off back-to-back losing seasons following the first national title in program history in 2022. Long-time hitting coach Mike Clement believes these Rebels, though, are deeper, especially on the pitching side.“I think it's as much pitching depth as we've had in my decade here,” Clement said. Clement was joining the Ole Miss Spirit's (OMSpirit.com) Ben Garrett on Thursday (January 9, 2025) for an all-new edition of ‘Talk of Champions,' an Ole Miss podcast powered by RiverLand Roofing.Text or call RiverLand for all your roofing needs: 662-644-4297. Few, if any, are doing more for Ole Miss in the NIL (name, image and likeness) space. Visit them online at RiverLandRoofing.com.Clement continued, “Knock on wood, we're healthy. Obviously that's a huge part of the last two years. (First-year Ole Miss pitching coach) Joel (Mangrum) deserves a lot of credit. The pitching depth is really, really good. We're going to have 10-15 guys deep.”Clement also provides insider updates on the status of two-way Rebel Austin Simmons, construction of the lineup, options for left field and much, much more. Simmons is next up for Ole Miss football as QB1 following the departure of three-year starter Jaxson Dart.“When he walks through the doors over here (at baseball) he is always going to be welcome,” Clement said.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Second-year lefty Austin Simmons is seemingly next in line to replace Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart at season's end, if not sooner. The 6-foot-4 Simmons has operated all year as the Rebels' clear-cut No. 2. Simmons, a former four-star recruit, has appeared in three games and completed 10 of 21 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown.No. 18 Ole Miss (5-2, 1-2 SEC) is off this week but returns to action against Oklahoma (4-2, 1-2) in Oxford on October 26.“The hard part as far as planning goes is it's kind of a wait-and-see mindset,” long-time Ole Miss baseball assistant coach Mike Clement said in an all-new edition of the Ole Miss Spirit's ‘Talk of Champions' podcast. “The hardest part with all those football guys that we've had in the past is they have to come in and make their mark in January.”Lane Kiffin's Rebels and their inexplicably-struggling offense laid another egg against an SEC opponent — only this time at rival LSU and in a 29-26 overtime stinker. The Rebels now find themselves in a precarious College Football Playoff position. If desperate times do, indeed, call for desperate measures, could Simmons down the line be called upon to provide a spark? Those are all football questions, however. Simmons' ceiling in baseball is just as high. Unfortunately, the balance of playing two sports in college comes with its share of sacrifices. Ole Miss baseball is currently in the middle of fall intrasquads.Clement discussed the Simmons Conundrum, as well as the recovery of 2022 co-ace Hunter Elliott, the transfer-portal sluggers and much, much more in ‘Talk of Champions,' powered by RiverLand Roofing.Text or call RiverLand Roofing today for all your roofing needs: 662-644-4297. The exhibition is free to fans to attend. Ole Miss last week whipped Jacksonville State the what was the team's first scrimmage against outside competition this fall.“I think it just solidified some thoughts from a coaching standpoint,” Clement said. “We're now, from an offensive standpoint, 50 or 60 plate appearances into the fall, which is a lot. They're going to end up with 75, some of them 80 plate appearances, which is a huge sample size for the fall.“The guys we've already talked about have flourished. They've been what we expected, but a couple of them have been even more than that. I'm speaking more from the offensive side.“They were huge pick-ups at the time we picked them up, but there's some alfas in the group and some leadership and all of those things. Not only good baseball players, which we kind of knew, and I think our fans knew, but you don't know how they're going to mix into the locker room and all that, and it's been, to this point, pretty seamless.“Got a fall game against Jacksonville State this weekend, so it'll be good to see someone in a different uniform in the other dugout and all that. Ole Miss baseball on Wednesday signed the No. 6 recruiting class in the country. The Rebels — who all this week have been celebrating the program's first-ever national championship won in June — signed 19 high school recruits, including five ranked in the Top 100 nationally by Perfect Game.Among them is Oxford products Cooper Pratt, an infielder, and Campbell Smithwick, a catcher. They're also two of the biggest MLB Draft risks, according to Ole Miss hitting coach Mike Clement.“The good thing is two of the biggest draft risks are guys from Oxford,” Clement said. “Cooper Pratt is a 6-4, 200-pound shortstop. Kind of a similar body type to (Ole Miss shortstop Jacob Gonzalez). He has completely shot up draft boards here over the summer and kind of blown up. Was in the (Perfect Game) All-American game. But I think it will take a lot for him not to come to Ole Miss and play.“Similar to him, Campbell Smithwick, who's a senior at Oxford High School. Left-handed-hitting catcher. He's one of the best catchers in the country. Both of those guys are really, really strong on their commitment to academics and coming to school. But that's easy to say right now. Everybody's got a price, and that's the hard part about recruiting top recruits in college baseball. Not everybody shows up.”A few pitchers are worth following, too.“On the pitching side of things, there's a kid named Zander Mueth, from outside of St. Louis, the right-handed pitcher,” Clement continued. “Up to like 98 miles an hour, 99 miles an hour (with his fastball). Big, big arm, who I certainly think will have a chance to be a really good grab. Josh Knoth, a kid from New York that we picked up late, who's also in the Perfect Game All-American game (and) has a really good arm. He'll run it up there in the mid-to-upper 90s.“Those four guys are probably the biggest draft risks that we have, but I think they're all really, really solid in their commitment and excited about coming to school here, too.”Clement has the full breakdown of the class in this edition of Talk of Champions, as well as his first-person account of all the festivities this week — the latest being the team's trip to the governor's mansion in Jackson on Thursday.Ole Miss will also close out the fall intrasquad season with the Pizza Bowl on Friday.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
The defending national champion Ole Miss baseball team played a 12-inning exhibition game against UAB on Sunday.Long-time Rebel hitting coach Mike Clement wasn't all that thrilled with the results. To be fair, his only responsibility is the Ole Miss hitters, and Clement said the Rebels “pitched it really well.” Sophomore ace and projected Friday starter Hunter Elliott was one of four pitchers with at least three strikeouts.Offensively, however, they only scored five runs. The teams tied, 3-3, in the first segment. Ole Miss won, 2-0, in the second.“I'm sure some of our players would make the excuse of, ‘It's hard to get in an offensive flow. I get one at-bat and then I sit for two hours and get another at-bat,'” Clement said, adding the practice was structured for top-down lineup changes after every three innings.“All of that is true. We just didn't swing it great. It was kind of weak contact. Just kind of inconsistent. It wasn't terrible, but I wasn't super fired up about it.”Tulane transfer Ethan Groff was a bright spot.Ole Miss pulled Groff from the NCAA Transfer Portal in July following a sophomore season in which he hit .404 with nine home runs. He led the AAC with 15 doubles and 35 RBI and finished with a team-high 17 multi-hit games.Groff reached base in 38 of 41 games.“He has been really good in all intrasquads,” Clement said. “He's a dude. You're going to see him in our lineup a lot. He's a really, really good piece. He really knows how to take an at-bat (and) he's a really good outfielder.“That was a really good pick-up.”Clement said Groff is a top-of-the-order candidate.Groff — who was one of just four Rebels with exit velocities of at least 100 mph on Sunday — is currently competing with veteran TJ McCants to start in center field. Whichever player finishes second in the competition is expected to slide over to left.“He's going to make an immediate impact for us,” Clement said. “Really well-rounded player. He's going to steal some bases. He's going to come in and get after it.“If I was making out the lineup today, he would lead off. Just grinds out at-bats, not a ton of swing-and-miss to him (and) has some juice. It's going to be tough to get through him. He's going to be a good one.”Clement also discussed the upcoming week-long championship celebration, injuries, where the Rebels stand with less than two weeks left in fall ball and much, much more in this edition of Talk of Champions.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Star third-year Ole Miss shortstop Jacob Gonzalez will miss the remainder of the fall intrasquad season following an injury suffered in a second-base collision in practice.Long-time Rebel hitting coach Mike Clement, who joined the Ole Miss Spirit's Talk of Champions podcast on Tuesday, said there are no long-term concerns for Gonzalez, who has started over 130 combined games in his two Ole Miss seasons. He's expected to be ready for the season. Ole Miss opens February 17 against Delaware.“Him and (John) Kramer had a train wreck at second base,” Clement said. “A stolen base. They both stayed down. Gonzo stayed down a little longer than any of us would have liked.”Gonzalez has an MCL sprain. However, there is “no meniscus damage,” according to Clement, and no other ligaments were affected. He won't have surgery, instead focusing on rest and rehab.Gonzalez is a career .315 hitter at Ole Miss, including 30 home runs and 107 RBI. He has 159 total hits and a career .424 OBP (on-base percentage).“We're going to wrap him in a big bubble for the rest of the fall and told him to show up when we open up,” next season, Clement said.Clement also provided an extensive update on practices so far, as well as touched on mechanical adjustments for veteran infielder Peyton Chatagnier and a Party in the Sip for the national-champion Rebels in November.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ole Miss hosts recruiting visitors for every home football weekend, regardless of opponent.Lane Kiffin and Co. also share the wealth. The size of the list fluctuates with the schedule, but prospects can always been found on the sidelines prior to kickoff and in a section of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium exclusively reserved for them. Typically mixed in with the four and five-stars and their families are targets for other sports, too, and the defending national champion Rebel baseball team is almost always well-represented. But they won't be there Saturday, when Ole Miss (3-0) hosts Tulsa (2-1) at 3 p.m. CT. Mike Bianco's right-hand men and lead recruiters Mike Clement (hitting coach) and Carl Lafferty (pitching coach) are on the road recruiting in Phoenix, Arizona, and Fort Myers, Florida, respectively. However, a potential Top 12 showdown with Kentucky next week? Count them in.“Tulsa's not as good as Kentucky, so we kind of have to find this balance,” Clement said, in today's edition of Talk of Champions, an Ole Miss-exclusive podcast in association with the Ole Miss Spirit.“Laff and I will both be on the road this weekend. We'll go watch games (of high-school prospects and potential Ole Miss targets). Obviously next weekend is a big weekend (and) kids want to come to campus. It's a balancing act. I've been here eight years now through some really, really good football seasons. Some not-so-good football seasons. “When football is good, man, it's good for everybody. It's good for us, it's good for basketball, the whole deal. The cool thing about Ole Miss is no matter what the football record is, it's a pretty good time to come to campus. “Obviously coach Kiffin has got it rolling. They're really good.”Clement also discussed Baseball America ranking the Rebels' recruiting class No. 2 in the country, the fall intrasquad season opening next week, the plan for two-sport Rebel Tywone Malone and much more.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
