Today on Ascend: The Great Books Podcast, Dcn. Harrison Garlick and Dr. Matthew Bianco of the Circe Institute discuss the second part of Plato's Gorgias--the dialogue between Socrates and Polus—Gorgias' spirited, “colt-like” student who bursts in at 461b accusing his own teacher of being “too ashamed” to admit rhetoric needs no justice, only the power to persuade. Visit thegreatbookspodcast.com for our reading schedule.Visit our LIBRARY OF WRITTEN GUIDES to the great books.Visit our sister publication, THE ASCENT, for two spiritual lessons per week. What follows is pure Platonic fireworks: Socrates refuses long speeches, forces short questions, and delivers the unforgettable pastry-baker analogy (462–466a), branding rhetoric as mere flattery—like cookery or cosmetics for the soul—that “has no speech to give about the nature of the things” (465a). Polus agrees with several premises yet recoils when Socrates concludes that doing injustice is worse than suffering it, and the unpunished tyrant is the unhappiest man alive (478–479). The conversation spirals into a shocking vision of punishment as medicine for the soul: the wrongdoer should run to the judge “as to a doctor” (480b). Throughout, the hosts explore whether rhetoric itself is evil or only rhetoric divorced from philosophy, using the tripartite soul as a foothold—Gorgias as corrupted intellect, Polus as honor-craving thumos, Callicles (next week) as unashamed appetite—while Socrates models a just soul governing all three. Dr. Bianco brings fresh insight into Socrates' tailored pedagogy and the happiness that only a philosophical rhetoric can truly serve.Key Themes & Search Tags:• Plato's Gorgias• Polus• Rhetoric vs Philosophy• Tripartite Soul• Doing injustice vs suffering injustice• Punishment as medicine• Pastry-baker analogy• Classical Education• Socrates pedagogy• Pleonexia• Happiness eudaimonia

In this episode, Antonio explores the complex biology of thyroid hormone production, conversion, and regulation—highlighting how deiodinase enzymes modulate hormone activity at the tissue level and why that matters for interpreting lab results. He discusses the shortcomings of relying solely on TSH as a marker of thyroid function, the ongoing debate around combination therapy with T3 and T4 versus standard T4 treatment, and how genetics, tissue sensitivity, and individual variability influence thyroid hormone metabolism. The conversation also examines how hypothyroidism affects energy, mood, cognition, and longevity; why some patients remain symptomatic despite "normal" labs; and how future research could reshape treatment paradigms. We discuss: How the thyroid produces, stores, and activates hormones like T4 and T3 to finely regulate thyroid activity [2:45]; How fasting alters thyroid hormones to conserve energy [12:45]; Action of the deiodinases: how D1, D2, and D3 enzymes control the activation and inactivation of thyroid hormones [19:15]; The normal function of thyroid hormone and the roles of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and deiodinases in maintaining hormonal balance [23:30]; Why understanding thyroid physiology is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism [33:45]; Testing for thyroid hormones: understanding free vs. total levels, the limitations of current T3 assays, best practices, and more [36:00]; Genetic and sex-based variability in thyroid hormone regulation and their limited clinical significance [43:45]; Hyperthyroidism: causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options [46:00]; Hypothyroidism: diagnosis and autoimmune causes of hypothyroidism [56:30]; More on hypothyroidism: diagnostic biomarkers, antibody patterns, and non-autoimmune presentations [1:05:00]; Thyroid hormone replacement therapy [1:15:15]; More on thyroid replacement strategies: exploring the evidence gaps, mortality signals, effects on lipids, and more [1:28:00]; Hypothyroidism basics: causes, antibody implications (including pregnancy), and how to make the diagnosis before choosing therapy [1:35:15]; Thyroid medication: compounded controlled-release T3, brand name versus generic, and what Antonio prescribes to newly diagnosed hypothyroid patients [1:42:45]; Redefining treatment success: why normalizing TSH isn't always enough for patients with hypothyroidism [1:54:45]; Case studies: analysis of two unusual cases of thyroid disease [1:57:00]; Dangers of supplementing with high levels of iodine, and female-specific risk of thyroid disease [2:05:45]; Case study of a patient who presents with elevated TSH but no symptoms [2:09:30]; How future research could reshape treatment, and Antonio's new book called "Rethinking Hypothyroidism" [2:13:15]; and More. Welcome back to Pizza Quest! The cottage bakery movement is a global phenomenon and we have here, in my hometown of Charlotte, NC, a shining example of a rising star of this movement. Doug and Kaitlin Rose, along with their "team" of four kids (ages 9-16), are cranking out amazing 100% sourdough breads and bagels (and other inventive sourdough products made with heirloom and ancient grain flours), from a small bakeshop constructed inside their carport. Every loaf is pre-sold via subscription before it ever hits the shelves and, after a relentless six year commitment to learning the craft and growing the business, the Roses are ready to make the huge leap to a brick and mortar bakery located about a mile from their home (and, I might hope, to reclaiming full use of their home for, well, home stuff). This is an inspirational story about single-mindedness and grit, and a great case study for how to grow a business for anyone who has ever had an entrepreneurial vision of their own. One obvious takeaway: stay patient and be resilient. Hear all about it in this delightful and insightful conversation with my favorite local bakers, Doug and Kaitlin Rose, founders of Team Rose Bread.
Welcome back to Pizza Quest! This episode is a case study on how to create and bring a new product to market. The product is called Pizza Freak, and the team members behind it are Brad Daniels, Brad Kilgore, and Matt McKenney or, as I like to call them, two chefs and a marketing guru. What you will learn in this episode is how a Detroit-inspired frozen square pizza went through the journey from idea, to product, to getting it on the shelves. I've tasted it and it is pretty special -- a frozen pizza with chef-inspired aspirations that really delivers on its promise. It's a product that required innovation at every level of the process and, hey, they have pulled it off, so far— but the story is still unfolding! The two chefs, Brad Kilgore and Brad Daniels (Brad and Brad) are the real deal, with resume's and restaurant successes that firmly establish their bona fides (you'll hear all about their various restaurant projects during the conversation), and Matt McKenney is the marketing and branding partner who represents a number of advanced-level cooking tools and products. What started out as a "what if" passion project turned into Pizza Freak, as they all realized, "We've got something special here." For anyone who has ever dreamed of taking their signature food products (you know, the ones that all your friends and family members tell you should be turned into a business or a restaurant, not realizing the challenges of such a task) this episode is for you, as the Pizza Freak team shares the many lessons learned during their five year quest, which is patiently finding its way onto a shelf (or click) near you. When Pizza Freak finally tips over and goes big, remember that you heard about it here first. Enjoy!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Welcome back to Pizza Quest! Somehow, New York City never has too many great pizzerias, and they all seem to push their competitors to keep raising the bar. In the midst of one of the most competitive marketplaces on earth, a new player better have some game if he or she wants to thrive, especially in the intense pizza playground known as the West Village. So, what did the successful Italian restaurateur Enrico Proietta (of Bella Blu fame) do? He turns loose one of his former proteges, Agostino Cangiano, as well as his own dynamic daughter, Tatiana Revox. to open Slicehaus, featuring Agostino's original Neapolitan/NY hybrid pizza using a little known imported flour that you will hear about in this interview. Tatiana takes care of the fun and games and customers, and Agostino handles the food side (including his personal meatball recipe -- hey, are we in a meatball renaissance? I think yes), and I'm guessing Enrico is kicking back and enjoying the show. Hear all about NYC's new kid on the block and how they have staked their claim against all the OG pizzerias that surround them, in this delightful conversation with Agostino Cangiano and Tatiana Revox, proprietors of Slicehaus.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Foto copertina de "Il libro bianco"Kim Tschang-Yeul, Goccia d'acqua (1970). JoAnne Bianco, senior investment strategist at BondBloxx, says that she doesn't expect there to be a need for a protracted cycle of rate cuts and makes the case that the Federal Reserve and the economy might be best served by stopping after one more cut, even if it waits through December to do it. Bianco says that markets -- particularly equity markets — want rate cuts — want rate cuts but could be overly optimistic about the impact that reductions would have when it comes to promoting spending, helping the labor market and more. Kendall Dilley, portfolio manager, Vineyard Global Advisors says "It's a really healthy bull market right now" with the potential for the Standard & Poor's 500 to top 7,000 by year's end. Dilley added that the charts aren't showing the kind of big tops that suggest that momentum is starting to wane, so while valuations are elevated and "the market has priced in a lot of good news," he still thinks declines should be viewed as buying opportunities. Ravi Chintapalli, portfolio manager on the Nuveen Global Fixed Income team, says that he has never seen a high-yield market that has been higher quality than what he is seeing now. That helps to explain tight spreads, and suggests investors shouldn't shy away from high-yield because they're being compensated for "the true level of default risk in the market." In the Market Call, Tobias Carlisle, founder of the Acquirers Funds, talks deep-value investing and how it works in a market dominated by a few big names. Carlisle recently wrote a book comparing the value investing tactics of Warren Buffett with "The Art of War" tactics of Sun Tzu.

Ten years ago, Sarah Owens decided to parlay her success as a successful cottage baker and curator of roses at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, and write a book, "Sourdough: Recipes for Rustic Fermented Breads, Sweets, Savories, and More." The book went on to win a coveted James Beard Award and Sarah was off and running into the next stage of her career: teaching classes around the world, writing more books, such as "Toast & Jam," and even helping open a bakery in Lebanon for Syrian refugees. Those ten years flew by and now she has just released an updated tenth anniversary edition of the book that helped make her famous. She tells us all about those book updates, including a new resource section listing of small, artisan mills around the country where bakers can source locally produced flour, and also shares many of the adventures that her journey in natural fermentation and jam making has opened up for her. Join The Revd Canon Dr Alison Joyce, Rector of St Bride's, and St Bride's Choir for this week's reflection in words and music. The choir begins this week's reflection singing verses from Psalm 84 – "O how amiable are thy dwellings : thou Lord of hosts!" – to a chant by the English composer Sir Edward Bairstow. Bairstow was very much wedded to his dwelling place of Yorkshire, the county of his birth and where he served as Organist of York Minster for several decades until his death. He even turned down an offer to become Organist at Westminster Abbey and said of the suggestion that he follow a fellow composer to the United States that he would "rather go to the devil"! Our reading from Luke is the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. Alison reflects on how it reminds us that whenever we are tempted to view ourselves too favourably, we should remember that we — like all around us — are made from the same dust. We close with the hymn "Come down, O Love divine" which sets a fourteenth century text by Bianco da Siena – a member of the Order of Jesuates, a group of unordained men who followed the prescripts of St Augustine. The tune is Down Ampney by the great Ralph Vaughan Williams. Jim Bianco, president of Bianco Research, returns to The Julia La Roche Show for episode 297 for an in-studio appearance. Bianco argues the Fed is making a policy error by cutting rates when financial markets are at all-time highs across the board—stocks, gold, bonds, M2, and home prices. He explains that job creation has slowed from 158,000 to 29,000 per month not because the economy is weak, but because immigration has essentially stopped, reducing population growth to an 80-year low—meaning 29,000 jobs may actually be appropriate. Bianco warns that cutting rates in this environment risks recreating inflation through two key channels: tariffs (average rates up 6x to 17-18%) and remote work (giving labor more power to demand higher wages). He sees dangerous concentration in AI stocks (41 companies representing 47% of S&P 500 market cap) reminiscent of late-1990s bubble dynamics, with aggressive retail buying and passive flows creating mispricing that could end badly when the "buy the dip" mentality finally breaks. This episode is sponsored by Monetary Metals. Dave interviews someone as pessimistically optimistic as him today: Alex Stupak, chef and founder of Empellón. Dave and Alex talk about the dark arts of sandbagging (2:33), the end of "high/low" dining, and the history of food leading to today (6:28). They also discuss selling out, Alex's new social media presence, and the origin of ideas. Mark Todd, aka "The Cheese Dude" returns to take us on the ultimate cheese tasting to die for -- or, more accurately, a "Before You Die" tour. Mark has previously guided us through the pasta filata category (aka, mozzarella-like "pulled" cheeses), the cheddar category, the world of hard aged cheeses, and Alpine and smelly cheeses -- he has been my cheese Yoda for the past few years here on Pizza Quest and this time we go all the way to the summit. I asked him to guide me through four or five cheeses that he considers his Mt. Rushmore and, sure enough, this episode has, for me, fulfilled the "loyalty test" (that is, I tasted them when we recorded this episode but I am still enjoying the taste memories weeks later). Join us as we climb to the top of the Mt. Rushmore of cheeses you will want to run out and track down so that you can taste along with us.For the record, here are the five cheeses we tasted and enjoyed with what I call our Meg Ryan cheese moments together. You'll know what I mean when you tune in: Emmi Gruyere Kaltbach; Akaas 36 month Aged Gouda; HRVMNS Epoisses; Mitica Sottocenere; and Delin Brillat Savarin Your local cheese monger will know what these are, or may have ones as close as possible to them.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Featured Artist: Sarah Bianco Artist Sarah Bianco's work can be found at the intersection of fine and commercial art. Her current studio practice at the Tannery Arts Center is quite literally built from her commercial practice, where she uses old drop cloths from her painting business as the foundation for her fine art. Bianco's process often results in airy dreamscapes that depict figures jumping and suspended in space. This motif represents her artistic approach, taking risks and leaping into the unknown—that liminal space between when you jump and when you land, which is also echoed in the gallery name, Apricity. Sarah Bianco will be featured in the 2025 40th annual Santa Cruz County Open Studios Art Tour and Content Magazine Issue 18.1, "Discover Follow Bianco on Instagram at paintingbybianco & apricitygalleryExplore her portfolio at sarahbianco.com Learn more about the Santa Cruz County Open Studios Art Tour at openstudios.artscouncilsc.org#SarahBianco #ArtistTalk #WomenArtists #CreativeProcess #ArtPodcast #SantaCruzArt #MixedMediaArtist #VisualArtConversations #OpenStudios2025 #ApricityGallery #FineArtJourney #ArtAndCreativity #BehindTheCanvas #ArtLifeStories #EmergingArtists
When it comes to Monday's post-tariff rebound, Jim Bianco warns investors, "this is going to happen for the next few months to the next couple years." He sees tariff headaches continuing until more trade deals are ironed out. Jim also turns to the investment front and explains how A.I. has done a lot of the heavy lifting in the SPX. He later offers another strategy for bonds that involves underweighting "corporates" and overweighting "mortgages."======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Welcome back to Pizza Quest. You may remember Blaine Parker from an earlier episode, awhile back, in which we discussed his book and website, Free the Pizza, which is a humorous, step by step manual for how to make restaurant quality pizzas in a home oven. Well, Blaine is back, along with his talented wife and writing/producing partner, Honey Parker, to tell us all about a new documentary film they are making. The full is titled, "Little Miss Margherita: A Misundertood Pizza in a Misunderstood Place." The place they are referring to is the state of Mississippi, along the Gulfport Coast. There's a lot more to the story, and it's much more fun to hear Blaine and Honey tell us about it in their own words. Also, Honey talks a bit about her series of rom-com novels, "The V-Life," about Sugar Bernstein, a New York ad-woman who also happens to be a vampire (yes, you heard it right). We even discuss who Honey hopes will be cast to play Sugar when the books become a movie. Welcome back to Pizza Quest,Rye bread, the way we remember it -- at least those of who grew up near Jewish bakeries and delis -- has never really gone away but it does, at times, seem like an endangered species. Steven Katz, a Washington DC attorney and policy consultant, who also happens to be a published food writer and recipe developer, along with his longtime friend, library archivist and guardian of cultural taste memories Donna Webber, worked together over the past few years to develop a Jewish rye bread that checks off all the boxes connecting past with present. Steven, as the baker, calls his loaf, "Katz Rye Has Soul." His food roots go deep in the American culinary industry, having been raised in Chicago's meat packing world in a family business selling some of the finest steaks and other meat products known to mankind, and his collaboration with Donna resulted in a synergy that tapped into both of their passions for quality and authenticity. If you too are part of the rye renaissance, you will not want to miss this stimulating conversation. As we often say, it's more about the quest than it is about the pizza, and Steve and Donna's journey is a perfect example.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Story 1: The Left has made out Jimmy Kimmel to be a martyr for free speech, but that very same party elected a president who coerced YouTube into removing certain viewpoints from that platform. Will points out the hypocrisy of this after breaking down the latest in the investigation into the shooting of three detainees at a Dallas ICE facility earlier in the day. Story 2: Republican CA Gubernatorial Candidate and Riverside County, CA Sheriff Chad Bianco (R-CA) sits down with Will to discuss his upcoming gubernatorial campaign against Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), explaining the intricacies of California politics and how he has been misrepresented by his political opponents. Sheriff Bianco also gives a law enforcement perspective on the Dallas ICE shooting. Story 3: New York Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz (R-NY) joins to share an insider's perspective on Zohran Mamdani. Does the mayoral candidate truly practice what he preaches? Or is he just another populist in search of political power. Jake Blumencranz tells it all, from how the self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist has turned up the temperature in NYC politics to his sticky stance on sex work. Plus, Will and the crew react to the droves of pregnant women taking Tylenol after President Trump's recent warning, theorizing on some potential uses of reverse psychology. Welcome back to Pizza Quest!Charlotte, NC is starting to generate more and more national buzz as a culinary destination city. Top Chef is in pre-production here in preparation for its next season, with Charlotte as the host city, and some of the local chefs and restaurants are getting recognition by The James Beard and other prestigious organizations. And, on the pizza front, a couple new pizzerias are getting a lot of national recognition and, in the case of our guests on this episode, international acclaim. Bird Pizzeria a tough reservation to get these days, with a 60 day wait list and a location that is slightly off the beaten path, but the pizzas are uniquely their own -- a combination of East Coast as well as Chicago and Cleveland influence. In addition, due to the magic of TikTok and Instagram, the Kale Caesar Salad has gone viral and now people from as far away as New Zealand are filming themselves doing knock-off versions. Who knew?As a Caesar Salad junkie myself (I sometimes flirt with the idea of doing a companion website called Caesar Salad Quest), I had to get over there to find out what all the hoopla was about. My wife, Susan, and met up with Blaine and Honey Parker (who you will meet in a future episode here if you aren't already a subscriber to Blaine's newsletter, Free the Pizza), who had driven 600 miles just to experience Bird Pizzeria as part of their own pizza quest (like I said, the buzz has extended beyond the city walls), and we all shared the (yes) amazing Kale Caesar as well as two signature pizzas, The Plain (their take on a Margherita) and also the White, with half pepperoni and half sausage and a few other embellishments. You'll hear more about the salad and the pizzas during this podcast. In this episode, Nkem and Kerrel share their journey with us, and tell us how they ended up landing in Charlotte and developing their menu. Their story, like many others we've showcased here, is unconventional, loaded with unexpected moments of struggle and grace that somehow have serendipitous, happy endings. Sometimes you throw out the playbook and just follow your gut. Those are the places that often end up becoming legends in the making.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Welcome back to Pizza Quest!Every now and then we are fortunate to welcome back the legendary John Arena, who I refer to as the Yoda of Pizza. Often, Brian Spangler of Portland's Apizza Scholl's, also joins us and we refer to the two of them as The Pizza Yodi's. It's one of our most popular series and always a lot of fun for me. Well, Brian couldn't make it this time but we are fortunate to have a new member of the Pizza Yodi pantheon, Leo Spizzirri, the Director of Education at Pizza University, and a certified master teacher extraordinaire (aka Maestro) who is recognized throughout the world. In this episode, John tells us about his upcoming trip to Naples for a ceremony in recognition of the top 50 global pizzerias (including 10 from the USA), and shares his own thoughts on some who did and didn't make the list, as well as those who he values as the national treasures of the American pizza universe. Leo adds his own views on the mentors in his life and pays tribute to John's legacy of mentoring the next generation of pizza luminaries.
Jim Bianco, president of Bianco Research, returns to The Julia La Roche Show for episode 282 to react to Fed Chair Jerome Powell's Jackson Hole speech on Friday. Bianco argues Powell "caved" on rate cuts despite inappropriate conditions, with core inflation above 3% and markets at all-time highs. He explains that the pandemic permanently changed the economy, while Trump's immigration crackdown created net negative population growth for the first time in 50 years, making current job creation numbers of 35,000 monthly actually appropriate rather than concerning. Bianco warns that cutting rates with high inflation risks repeating last year's policy mistake when long-term rates rose anyway, and predicts tariffs will continue weekly rather than being one-time events. Despite concerns, he's optimistic about AI creating net positive job growth and transforming the economy. This episode is sponsored by Monetary Metals.
