In this episode, Eddy and I realized that without physical drum magazines sitting around our studios, we've totally lost touch with what the major brands, besides our endorsements, are doing. So, we decided to fix that by taking a deep dive into companies that we are not sponsored by, starting with Pearl Drums! We answer the internet's most googled questions about the brand (Is Pearl actually good? Pearl vs. Tama?), and then—with an unlimited imaginary budget—we build our absolute dream Pearl kits from scratch. In this episode, we cover:The Dream Builds: I go with a Reference One and the Matt Halpern Signature Snare, while Eddy leans into nostalgia with a Maple/Gum kit and the Joey Jordison Signature Snare. The "Magazine Problem": Why it's so much harder to understand gear specs and innovation in the age of Instagram reels.Studio Update: I share the unfortunate news that my studio flooded on Christmas Day and that renovations are currently underway.Mentioned in this Episode:Pearl Reference One SeriesPearl Masters Maple/GumMatt Halpern Signature SnareJoey Jordison Signature SnareSupport the show

Mike Johnston revolutionized drum education. He leveraged technology and social media early, and became a world-renowned presence throughout the global drumming community. And to think, he almost pivoted away from drum education altogether just prior to the pandemic. Mike, perhaps to his surprise, shares this deeply personal story for the first time publicly with Matt and Jordan. He takes us through his thought process and what ultimately led him to becoming more energized than ever about serving his loyal drumming community. Mike and Matt discuss their Common Thread Clinic tour with previous CC guest, JP Bouvet. They share its origins, highlights from the road, and what it meant to "pull the rip cord." Jordan is curious about self awareness and acceptance as it relates to Mike's experience of himself as a drummer in the world. Mike Johnston was living the dream of most drummers, playing in a rad band that had a deal with a major record label and touring heaps! What he knew the whole time that most people didn't was that he had a different calling, the world needed him to teach and spread the magical blessing that is drumming. Well answer the call he did........and he brought a bunch of "biscuits" with him! These days Mike is one of the most sought after drum instructors in the world and runs mikeslessons.com (when I say run, i mean him and his lovely wife Amber do EVERYTHING from top to bottom) which is arguably the best online drum courses on the interwebs. For myself, as a drummer through and through who has been playing for most of his life, when i stumbled upon Mike's youtube channel I fell head over heels in love with drumming more than I have ever been! The understanding he brings to things you may or may not know is mind blowing, and for that brother Johnston.....I THANK YOU!!!!! About Robonzo: Roberto R. Hernandez (aka Robonzo) is a part-time professional drummer and vocalist, who performs with multiple bands throughout the course of any given year. While he’s most at home performing on a drum kit, Robonzo also regularly gigs with a Cajon, Djembe and other accoutrements of percussion. He’s worked with original artists and cover bands in and around San Jose, California since 2001. Although he’s a predominately self-taught drummer, Robonzo has in recent years become a student of the acclaimed online educator Mike Johnston at MikesLessons.com. Robonzo played his first gig at a college bar in Arlington, Texas. Within months of that first gig, he was performing throughout the greater Dallas-Fort Worth and the neighboring states of Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. Thanks to two older siblings, Robonzo’s earliest music influences included The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Cream. In addition to his love of the 60s, Robonzo has always maintained a healthy interest in new music and emerging genres. On the business of doing business as a musician and an artist, Robonzo has also maintained an interest in the changing music industry. He recognizes a growing need to educate and help the next generation do more of what they love—make music. In July of 2016, Robonzo and his wife relocated to El Valle de Anton, Panama. Similar to his move from DFW to San Jose in ’99, Robonzo is poised to start over. He’s planning to foster and grow the live music scene in El Valle while researching ways to help other musicians around the world. Mike Johnston is one of the premier drum educators in the world. Even while touring the world with his band, his passion for teaching was always at the forefront for him. After realizing that being on the road in a rock band wasn't the right musical path for him, he went back to teaching others the art of drumming. Once he reached total capacity with students, he realized that the internet held the key to allow true scale to teach tens of thousands of drummers. His idea was to create "iTunes for drummers" and Mikeslessons.com was born. Mike taught himself graphic design, video production, web development and all the skills he needed to accomplish his dream. In this great interview, Mike is extremely forthcoming and open about how his teaching empire went from an idea to the phenomenon that it is today. Unquestionably, Mike has had an enormous impact on drumming in general and countless drummers around the world. Mike is always inspirational and uplifting and this interview is no exception. Do not miss this episode.
Lou Santiago Jr. is a name that some will know and others will not. What’s in a name though? Is a name that important? Maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. Lou Santiago Jr. was a name with a lot of buzz around it back in 2003 and beyond after he won the Modern Drummer Undiscovered Drummer Contest. The stories that we are told in this episode are a product of his success with that contest and also a Guitar Centre contest that went pretty far until he was beat out by none other than Chris Coleman. So with everything that is said and done in Lou’s career, it is kind of insane why we haven’t heard of him lately. But here’s the thing. Lou left the music scene and the drum industry almost seven years ago when he enrolled in medical school to pursue a career as a professional healthcare provider. A massive departure at the peak of his career as a pro drummer and some may wonder why he made that move. According to Lou, it was for his children and family. He wanted to provide his family with a stable and bountiful income and he felt tired of the hustle that he experienced in the music industry. He also wanted to be a present father and not on tour for weeks on end away from his family. These are very good reasons in my opinion, depending on what you value of course. I side with Lou on this one though. So Lou is only three months from graduating and he also has some big plans to launch a new online business on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Lou leaked that it is an educational website and apparently you get a lot for very little money. Lou claims that his website will be an instant success, which is a lofty claim in my opinion. In my eyes, it would be difficult to break out on the internet with an education platform/business plan without some serious marketing horsepower and a very well developed plan to launch it. I mean look at who exists in that space. Drumeo, Orlando Drummer, Mikeslessons.com and ummmm that is kind of the big three, isn’t it? It’s kind of like Ford, Dodge, and Chev if we are comparing online drum education brands to domestic vehicle brands. All of these brands have been building their businesses for years, they have enormous exposure on all social networks, and they all have been chipping away and working hard to create products and services that drummers want. So in other words, even if the idea is amazing, there is still some stiff competition to deal with to make it an instant success. I will say this though, good quality content that you get to keep at a low price is a winning formula in theory. So this is a very long episode with quite a lot of details about the life and drumming career of Lou Santiago Jr. Everything from his roots growing up in New York, his scholarship to prep school, his time spent in the Navy, his divorce, the product he developed with Meinl, his DVD called “Three Days” that didn’t come together, some great advice given by the great Billy Ward….the storied career of Lou Santiago Jr. is almost larger than life with twists and turns of success and defeat. Considering the rather short length of time that Lou has played drums it is absolutely incredible what he managed to achieve and what skills he managed to develop. There is almost too much stuff to list in this write up that is worthwhile mentioning because most of it is. It is difficult not to agree with some of the statements that Lou presents in this episode and it is also not difficult to avoid taking a close listen to the advice of what not to do as well. I believe that Lou has a lot of great principles on life and how he chooses to live. He is a person who strongly believes in his values and does not fall, victim, at least based on what knowledge I have come to understand, to temptation from offers and opportunities that many people would snap up in a heartbeat and assume their net worth based on the profile of the artist they are associated with. So the first half of this episode is mostly biographical and the second half of this interview features the juicy stuff. Lou really comes through with strong and powerful statements that will rattle your cage. It makes you think. It’s not to say that I agree with everything he says, but the fact that he believes it so strongly is all that matters in my opinion. There are some points mentioned regarding success, visibility, taking the high road, sticking with your faith, and being used, that I can’t help but agree with and quite strongly in fact. Other things said are simply Lou’s life experience and it is his truth. That is what makes us all unique and what makes for great interviews. At the end of the day, Lou is #sorrynotsorry. Brynner speaks with drummer/educator Mike Johnston from MikesLessons.com. Listen as Mike and Brynner go on to talk about the Sacramento rock scene, social media, motivating conversations and more!
A longtime friend and drumming mentor of mine Mike Johnston joins the podcast to share his knowledge on what it takes to start and grow a successful business. Founding www.mikeslessons.com over a decade ago, Mike has created the #1 drum instructional site on the internet. What started as youtube videos for his personal drum students, he turned his business into a global company teaching students all over the globe. With over 1mm youtube views and 120k subscribers, Mike shares his 3 key areas of focus that allowed him to achieve his dream of doing what he loves. A great episode for even a non musician. If you are an educator of any kind, you are sure to get something from this episode. If you've ever wanted to know what it takes to be successful starting your own business (whatever it is) you will take something away from this. Mike is a touring clinician and the first full time "drum instructor" to ever grace the cover of Modern Drummer magazine. Please check out www.mikeslessons.com for more information on Mike and his new musical project "Man on the Moon." Enjoy the episode!

Welcome to another episode of the DrumGAB podcast. Today’s guest is Mike Johnston. Widely regarded as one of the leaders in online drum education with his business Mikeslessons.com, Mike has incredible positive influence and affinity in the drum industry with his friendly and relatable demeanor. He has been creating instructional content for years now and is very careful in his approach to ensure that his audience and students can be as engaged as possible and fill their minds and hearts with positivity to trudge through with learning this incredibly challenging, and often times, frustrating instrument. I don't think anyone does it better either. He was an absolute treat to interview and has affected how I think as well about my DrumGAB podcast and how I engage my audience. Key moments in this episode - Mike talks about how his new musical project, Man on the Moon, came about and how Mike hasn’t been involved in a band for ten years since he decided to start his own online teaching business, Mikeslessons.com. We also learn about how the album was originally tracked elsewhere but the drum sounds and vision from other producers weren’t matching what Mike had in mind….so Mike recorded it himself at the Mikeslessons.com facility. - The next segment of the interview is perhaps the most valuable to listeners. We talk about the differences between company culture and client culture. The concept of client culture has personally spawned a more focused effort for how I build DrumGAB and my listening community. Anyone who has a product or media that they are trying to get off the ground needs to really listen to what Mike has to say here. It contains the special ingredient for long-term success and maximum engagement. - Next up in the interview is Mike’s drum camps and that whole experience. If you are a softy, you may want to have Kleenex nearby. This also, in an indirect way applies to the client culture discussion as I believe Mike’s drum camps are a perfect solution to client culture. It is great to hear how the camps started and what people are getting out of them. I’d be surprised if you don’t love Mike after this part….but let’s be honest you probably do already anyway. - The final chapter of this interview deals with the 500-pound elephant in the room…..what Mike thinks about online drum education. Mike lends some major knowledge about this side of the industry and for anyone trying to become online educators, he explains what you need to do and what to expect for this long and arduous journey that lies ahead. In many ways, Mike and a few others got on board at the right time and while it hasn’t been easy for any of them, the level of saturation was next to nothing compared to today. Mike started doing this before the term “streaming” was a thing, it was simply called “broadcasting” and the technical limitations were extreme and the frustrations must have been high back then. In any case, Mike reassures the listeners with some great advice on this subject. Concluding Thoughts This episode marks a huge milestone for the DrumGAB podcast. It sits perfectly at Episode 49 and everything that has led up to this moment has been a whirlwind of learning, experience, and fond memories. Mike provided such a positive experience to me personally and I feel listeners will gather that from our chat. Overall, this episode provides some of the best knowledge shared on DrumGAB and I feel it is a precursor to other great opportunities on the show. Thank you to all the listeners that have supported the show so immensely and for Mike giving me a chance to produce a top quality episode with him. This one, on a personal level, was an incredible session that I won't soon forget. Music by: Man on the Moon Join me next Monday for another episode of the DrumGAB Podcast! Steve Wilson, saxo alto, saxo soprano, clarinete y flauta, Dave Pietro, saxo alto, saxo soprano, clarinetes, flautas. Rich Perry, saxo tenor. Donny McCaslin, saxo tenor y clarinet bajo. Scott Robinson, saxo barítono, flauta y clarinetes. Greg Gisbert, trompeta. August Haas, trompeta. Mike Rodriguez, trompeta. Frank Greene, trompeta. Keith O'Quinn, trombón. Ryan Keberle, trombón, Marshall Gilkes, trombón. George Flynn, trombón bajo. Ron Oswanski, acordeón. Lage Lund, guitarra. Frank Kimbrough, piano. Jay Anderson, contrabajo.
