In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, Stewart Alsop hosts ~littel-wolfur to explore spaced repetition, the dynamics of learning algorithms, and the philosophy behind Urbit. They break down Urbit's promise as a peer-to-peer platform with roots in a deep, almost otherworldly commitment to resilience and a long time horizon. Alongside ~littel-wolfur's take on memory as the strange balance of laziness and persistence, they dig into shrubbery, Urbit's latest namespace innovation, and the challenge of creating tools that last. From generational shifts to the philosophy of technology, Stewart and ~littel-wolfur contemplate whether Urbit's rebellious craftsmanship might be the foundation for a more enduring internet. By setting reminders to review information just before it's forgotten, spaced repetition acts as an effortless yet powerful memory tool. Although the practice demands daily discipline, it becomes an invaluable mechanism for retaining knowledge across vast timescales.SuperMemo and Incremental Reading: ~littel-wolfur shares his experience with SuperMemo, the original spaced repetition software that takes the method even further. SuperMemo's “incremental reading” allows users to gradually extract information from lengthy texts, breaking down complex learning into manageable, spaced chunks. For ~littel-wolfur, this approach goes beyond mere memorization; it turns learning into an immersive, long-term commitment. The Urbit Experiment: Urbit, a decentralized peer-to-peer network and OS, represents a radical rethinking of the internet. Stewart and ~littel-wolfur examine Urbit's potential as a platform where users truly own and control their data, echoing ideals of early Web 1.0. As the “long-haul project” of the tech world, Urbit cultivates an almost timeless ethos, making it as much a social experiment as a computing system.Shrubbery and Namespace Innovation: A core element of Urbit, “shrubbery” introduces a namespace that enables users to organize, connect, and retrieve information from across their digital universe. ~littel-wolfur explains how shrubbery allows users to link pieces of data like conversation notes, wikis, and documents, making it a versatile learning platform on Urbit. The elegance of this integration hints at a future internet where information can be personalized and seamlessly connected.Craftsmanship and Digital Resilience: ~littel-wolfur and Stewart touch on the fading art of craftsmanship in tech, which often gets lost in the layers of abstractions that modern software relies on. For ~littel-wolfur, coding on Urbit feels like working in a digital woodshop, where the focus is on intentionality and precision rather than flashy or disposable tech. This philosophy of craftsmanship offers a refreshing take on the art of creation in software, hinting at the durability and authenticity Urbit hopes to embody.AI's Limitations and Overconfidence Trap: The episode also highlights the limitations of AI, especially when it encourages laziness or over-reliance. While AI can help automate routine tasks, ~littel-wolfur warns of its tendency to produce fragile, overly complex solutions that unravel under scrutiny. They caution that true understanding comes not from shortcuts, but from engaging deeply with the work—a point that resonates with their belief in disciplined learning practices like spaced repetition. The Value of Optimism and Long Time Horizons: Amid a society obsessed with quick wins and rapid monetization, Stewart and ~littel-wolfur see Urbit's culture as a refreshing outlier, filled with builders who value curiosity and long-term thinking. This “thousand-year mindset” stands in contrast to much of the tech industry, where projects are often driven by immediate financial returns. By embracing a philosophy that resists the pressure for instant success, Urbit aligns itself with a vision of digital infrastructure that, rather than fueling transient trends, aims to be a lasting foundation for generations to come.

Stuart Draper founded Stukent, an innovative ed-tech company that provides simulated internships for business students. Stukent started by focusing on high-quality digital marketing education for colleges and universities using up-to-date digital textbooks and content. They then added a simulation system for students to practice their digital marketing skills. Stukent grew steadily with less than $1M in outside funding, which helped them bridge the long and seasonal buying cycles of big schools. The team grew to over 100 employees and nearly $10 million in revenue serving marketing professors and their students. In 2021, they engaged with Vista Point Advisors, an M&A advisor firm, to shop the company to prospective buyers and investors, eventually getting a majority investment from Tritium Partners. Stuart describes the M&A process, what worked well, and how he transitioned out of the company after two years of continued growth. Podcast Sponsor – Cypress Growth Capital This week's podcast is sponsored by my friends at Cypress Growth Capital. For 15 years, Cypress has provided non-dilutive growth funding to bootstrapped SaaS founders, including many successful founders I've interviewed here on this podcast. Quote from Stuart Draper, founder of Stukent “When we officially sold a major part of our company to investors, we had a brief celebration. My CFO and I called each other and screamed as loud as we could on the phone in a fun moment. We got there, we did this. My family also took a big trip and I got a break. “But then it was back to work. I was still the CEO and I still run this thing and I've got new investors that also need returns. I'm going to go deliver for these guys. They gave me a big payday, so I'm going to make sure they have a win too. “After the second board meeting with our investors, I realized this is way harder than I thought. After eight board meetings and doubling the business again, I wasn't enjoying this as much anymore. The board meetings were hard for me. Prepping for them was super stressful. “So we found a new CEO for Stukent, and he's doing great. Now I get to sit back in my chair at the board meeting, listen in, share my advice and opinions and come back in three months.” Links Stuart Draper on LinkedIn Stukent on LinkedIn Stukent website Tritium Partners website The Practical Founders Podcast Tune into the Practical Founders Podcast for weekly in-depth interviews with founders who have built valuable software companies without big funding. The episode explores the limitations of traditional methods and the power of experiential learning. Sean and Ben discuss Memrise's evolution to an AI-driven platform, offering personalized courses and immersive experiences, along with the potential of AI in language learning and the importance of resilience in the startup worldBen Whately is a versatile entrepreneur and tech innovator who has made significant strides in the world of language learning and climate tech. As the Co-founder of Memrise, a language-learning app with over 65 million users, he has played a pivotal role in transforming the way people learn languages. Currently serving as Memrise's Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Ben combines his expertise in pedagogy, social products, media entertainment, and business strategy to continually enhance the learning experience for millions. Beyond language learning, Ben is also the CEO of Angry Teenagers, utilizing Web3 technology to combat climate change. Here are a few of the topics we'll discuss on this episode of Product Launch: Memrise initially focused on memorizing words and phrases in context, then expanded to incorporate other aspects of language learning. Being an early adopter of mobile can give a business a significant growth advantage. AI startups have the potential to disrupt industries and ride the wave of innovation. Balancing user feedback and founder-level insights is crucial for product development. Understanding the changing customer insights and adapting to them can lead to business success. Timing played a significant role in Memrise's success with AI integration. Resources: Memrise NxtStep Podcast Chef Connect with Ben Whately:LinkedInConnect with our host, Sean Boyce: LinkedIn Email Quotables: 12:18 - “The reason that we unlocked growth was that we got onto mobile early enough that there were only two or three other mobile language learning apps. Apple and Google have to keep featuring different ones. We got on there early enough that we got big featuring early. We then got really good at working with Google and really understanding how to give the Google team the information that they want. Google is so metrics-driven that the more you can show them how they are building things that are helping you to grow your business, the more the internal team in Google can show off to their bosses, Hey look, this is how Google, this is how we work. Look at the great impact we had. And that allows you to get more visibility.” 15:56 - “So for us, the big growth channel was getting in the app stores early enough and then SEO taking over later on. We've never been able to compete with Duolingo or Babbel on marketing spend. They spend tens, hundreds of millions. I think our marketing spend last month was probably like $4,000. Like we just don't spend money on it, it's all organic. But we reach a point where we're like, we've got two massive gorillas in the room, and Duolingo and Babbel who are spending a huge amount and getting massive traction on that. It sucks a lot of the air out of the room.” 25:46 - “Clearly, generative AI is a way, that allows us to create tools there that you can practice with in a way that had never been possible before. So that's really been the kind of renaissance for Memrise, being another platform shift, getting into AI, Generative AI, before anyone else was there and applying it in all these different ways.” 19:33 - “I actually now see this a lot in companies that I advise where you're trying to get this balance between really good product and growth thinking where you're talking to your users all the time, you're understanding what it is they want, you're testing things really, really quickly. Particularly growth experiments have to be super fast. You want to be doing five iterations a week and getting them out with this idea of we've actually got to build something that's quite fundamentally different.” 27:20 - “I feel like that's another key takeaway here is people expect people like you and I, in terms of the products that we're building to have a plan hammered out all the way through in terms of how we're going to get there. But a lot of it keeps going. Build yourself a sustainable path to be able to continue to keep going and then take advantage of the opportunities that come at you from wherever. Just like this one I've used the AI stuff that you guys are building and Memrise. It's fantastic and it really does create much more of that immersive experience.” Free Email Course How to Build a Profitable AI-Powered B2B SaaS Business for Less Than $750 - https://nxtstep.io/b2bsaasConnect with Sean Subscribe to my YouTube Channel - https://www.youtube.com/@nxtstepsean Connect with me on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-boyce/ Notes generated by Podcast Show Notes (podcastshownotes.ai)

Some of you may have a general idea about how Osmosis got started, but today you are going to get the full, fascinating story from one of its co-founders, Shiv Gaglani, who we welcome back to the Raise the Line podcast as our special guest. Shortly into his first year of medical school at Johns Hopkins in 2011, Shiv, and his co-founder Ryan Haynes, realized medical education was overdue for an upgrade. “The research was clear on how people learn and how to get them to engage in their education, but professors weren't being taught how to teach. We wanted to bring evidence-based education tools like spaced repetition, test-enhanced learning, memory palaces and flipped classrooms to medical education.” They also wanted to make it fun, efficient and personalized, keying off the customized recommendations media giants such as Netflix and Facebook were using. After completing their second year, both took a leave from med school to build Osmosis based on those insights. After growing it from a crowdsourced question bank for classmates into a global education platform serving millions of future healthcare professionals, Shiv shepherded the acquisition of the company by Elsevier in 2021, freeing him to return to Johns Hopkins to complete his degree which he recently moved to Baltimore to do. So, what's it like to go from running the company to being a student using the product he helped build? Tune in to this delightful episode to find out, to learn what specialties he's considering and for advice on using “negative” emotions to achieve productive outcomes.

Shaunak Roy joins Ryan in this episode. Shaunak is the CEO and founder of Yellowdig, an active learning platform adopted by hundreds of colleges and universities. Yellowdig have a unique approach to sales and revenue, they use what they call the B2B to C Model, with a majority inbound sales method and work alongside the distinctive traits of the education space to grow and scale. KEY TAKEAWAYS Yellowdig creates connected learning environments, regardless of where students/teachers are located. It creates a unique user experience that doesn't exist online or a physical classroom either. Shaunak had always known he wanted to start his own company, he also knew that if he did create a company he wanted it to be scalable. This is why he wanted to create problem-solving technology. Shaunak started to learn everything he could about building a product, business models and the education space. It was a tremendous learning experience for him as he started to build Yellowdig. Yellowdig's first product wasn't a success but the schools loved the concept, so they went back to the drawing board to make it better. Yellowdig are a B2B to C company. This means that they go directly to the user of their technology and give them a pilot. If they then like this, they then use them to champion the school/administrator to buy the product. The majority of Yellowdig's leads are inbound, via faculty members referring and user webinars. As the education sector trust largely on referrals, Yellowdig are careful not to be to ‘salesy' towards them. This is a group that doesn't like to feel like they are being sold to. Gathering useful feedback from users is essential to Yellowdig's progress. Education is a very impact driven space to they want to ensure they can give all the facts and measures to their clients. BEST MOMENTS “I've always wanted to start a company which is why I did” “The B2C to C is essentially an extension of B2B” “Raising money is a big question, especially for saas companies” "It's a change in mindset, a lot of institutions are old school so you have to be patient with them" Do You Want The Closing Secrets That Helped Close Over $125 Million in New Business for Free?"
