Lara Jennings Interview with Adam Jacoby

Taken from Lara's terrific show on TuneFM, Adam explains why we don't really have a true democracy in Australia. His research is extensive and spans multiple continents and demonstrates the erosion of democracy in countries that claim to have democratic systems of government and values. The MiVote global movement, founded and chaired by Adam, is on a mission to erase this erosion by using technology to improve democracy across the world. We talked about how democracy worked in Australia for the vote on marriage equality, but how some politicians (in both Labor and Liberal parties) chose to vote against the will of the people anyway, which goes against the fundamental principles of democracy. Luckily, Adam has a plan to fix it by giving people the opportunity to have an informed vote on issues; not just at election time, but within the parliamentary process in a meaningful way.Adam then informs us of the 5 critical factors that governments need to govern well: transparency accountability truth compassion solution-orientation Adam also blows the argument that we have a two-party system of government and therefore Independent voting is futile out of the water. He uses the example of the Gillard-led minority government as example of how independent politicians can actually make government better and hold them to account to create better policies. We also discuss present issues around political advertising and the media and how the AEC could be improved to make sure politicians aren't telling lies to win votes in political campaigns.Interesting Quotes from the Interview“An election is not a democracy.”“The system is designed to win and maintain power so that you can prosecute your ideology, whatever that may be.”“Democracy is about enacting the will of the people and you can't enact the people's will if you never actually ask the people what they want.”“Democracy and politics are mutually exclusive… Politics is about the acquisition and winning of power, democracy is about the release of power to the people… When you are engaging in politics, the behaviours required to win an election fly in the face of what a democracy is.”“If you choose not to inform yourself, we choose not to listen to you. Because that's actually the citizen's responsibility in a democracy. A democracy is a responsibility in two parts. The first part is the responsibility for the citizen to understand the ramifications of their vote. The second part is for the representative to actually represent the majority view. We don't have either of those two things in our system.”Further Reading: Australian Democracy: An Overview Trust, Parties and Leaders: Findings from the 1987-2016 Australian Electoral Study Small Parties, Big Changes: The Evolution of Minor Parties Elected to the Australian Senate

After a few years it is about time to catch up with Adam Jacoby, founder of MiVote. MiVote is a collaborative decision making and voting platform that aims to give the entire public a say in parliament. In this interview we aim to learn more about how MiVote has progressed after a few years and what success and stumbling blocks this project has encountered that can apply for other democracy innovation projects. Referenced Links: https://mivote.tech/ Note that this was intended to be a one to one interview with Adam Jacoby, but on the day of the interview a lockdown was declared due to the ongoing worldwide pandemic hitting Melbourne Australia. Thus recording was done via video conferencing and was partially redubbed on my side to account for a live recording audio glitch. Recorded on 2021-07-20

Work Club provides collaborative working spaces to stimulate and energise its members and encourages conversations to spark creativity. About this conversation Technologist and entrepreneur Jamie Skella has spent two decades designing, building and advising of businesses across blockchain, IoT, and even future food. Formerly Executive Director at MiVote, a not-for-profit democratic movement, Jamie has since gone on to co-found one of Australia’s first blockchain projects, Horizon State. A company focused on redesigning how societies collaboratively make decisions using emerging technology – and how to arrive at high-quality decisions – Horizon State has built a community empowerment and secure voting platform that delivers unprecedented trust through the integrity and post-unforgeable attributes of distributed ledger technology. More About The Speaker Jamie Skella joins Florence Guild to explain Blockchain in simple terms, walk us through the Horizon State story, and gets us to think big picture about the opportunity that blockchain enabled disruption presents – as well as the risks and opportunities that come along with it. Decentralisation and disintermediation is on the horizon, whether you’re ready for it or not. Conversation Notes - Blockchain can be framed as a digitised and synchronized notebook, designed to replace how society organises itself. - It provides for an equitable and disintermediated society where we can redistribute wealth and potentially even save the environment. - In the long-term, the banks will need to make way for the rapid influx of change. - At this stage, developer tools are young and a lot more quality design work needs to be in place. - The accountability and transparency present in the system will always counteract the criminal element. Meet Jamie Futurist and entrepreneur Jamie Skella talks with me about why we should be optimistic about technology like AI and blockchain. As well as the future of democracy and the media. I resonate so much with Jamie who talks about something I absolutely believe in, and is one of the driving factors of why I started this podcast and Futures Collective as a whole. Technology like AI is automating and replacing jobs, there's no doubt about that, but there is also incredible opportunities that can come out of all this innovation if we foster what makes us unique as humans. The best part is he also makes this podcast actionable and relevant to young people growing up today. Jamie has spent 20 years in the design, building and advising of businesses across blockchain, eSports, machine learning, and even future food. He has formerly been the Executive Director at MiVote, and is now the Co-Founder of Horizon State, who are redesigning how societies collectively make decisions using distributed ledger technology. What we discuss - How automation and AI might affect our futures, and things we can do to prepare for that - Democracy - what is wrong with it and how to shape an effective democracy - Media influence and bias - The importance of curiosity

Collective Campus hosted Disrupt the Public Sector, its annual conference on innovation in Government, for the third time this year as part of the Australian Government’s Innovation Month 2017. I had the pleasure of facilitating a panel discussion on the topic of how to ‘make things happen’ in Government - which loosely translates to how to we transform Government to one that attracts top talents, is adaptable in the face of rapid change and uses its position to create more impact in society, rather than hide behind the veil of using taxpayer dollars as an excuses not to innovate which is incorrectly perceived as being risky (it is if you take few large bets instead of many small ones) and outsourcing accountability. Public sector spending in the Australian state of Victoria has almost doubled in the past 10 years, whereas in the private sector we see organisations like Netflix (entertainment), Khan Academy (education) and Minute Clinic (healthcare) achieving much more with much less in this time thanks to their ability to spot trends and opportunities and use emerging technologies to enable creating impact with less capital investment. Imagine a Government, with its wealth of resources, that moved just a little bit more like a Netflix? About our panelists: Jamie Skella Entrepreneur, futurist & strategist Jamie Skella is considered a thought leader in technology design, building and advising businesses across AI, blockchain, exports, and even future food. Jamie is an Executive Director at MiVote, who are redesigning government to give people the opportunity to vote on policy issues as they arise - not just for policy packages every few years. MiVote: www.MiVote.org.au Alvaro Maz Alvaro is Co-founder and Managing Director of Code for Australia. Code for Australia is helping Australian Government’s move towards a platform that allows citizens, public servants and industry to come together and work on issues that affect us all. Alvaro is also a social entrepreneur with a passion for public issues, technology and social change. In 2013 he launched Creative Suburbs, an online platform to help more people make a difference in their cities. He embarked on Code for Australia in late 2014 which led to launching Code for Aotearoa and a strong interest in government Every now and then he writes on urban issues for TrendCity. Code for Australia: www.codeforaustralia.org TrendCity: www.trendcity.org Janna McCann Janna is currently the General Manager at BizLab, for the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science. Bizlab has recently been established with the mission to support the Federal government's national innovation agenda through driving innovation within the public sector to facilitate engagement with industry and assist Australian innovators in becoming more competitive both locally and on the international stage. Topics discussed: -Key challenges to innovation in the public sector -Experiences in overcoming challenges -Procurement policies at odds with startup engagement -The merits of an open government v a closed one -What will Government look like in 20 years - does its role change? -Blockchain in Government -The perils of ‘not invented here’ -Why doing nothing costs taxpayers a lot more than changing Show notes: Watch the full video with audience Q&A at facebook.com/collectivecampus

Adam Jacoby from the fascinating new political organisation MiVote joins to the show to explain his long gestating plan to put 3 senators in Australian Parliament that you can control with an app. But it's the details of how he intends to make it work that are so very fascinating. Plus we examine the PR wreck that is Uber and is Nokia back from the dead with their deeply odd announcement of the new 3310 phone?

Let's talk about a little thing called democracy. MiVote is a new political movement that launches next week and it's all about direct democracy. It's an online platform and political party that enables its members to directly influence their elected representatives: representatives that will be committed to enacting the people's (informed) will. Founder Adam Jacoby kindly gave me a lot of time to talk through the idea and answer my annoying questions. He sets out just how fucked the system currently is and why he believes this might just work. Despondent at how little citizens’ voices were being heard and how little impact the average person could have in the way society was being run, an Australian entrepreneur by the name of Adam Jacoby decided to stop moaning on Twitter and start doing something about it. The result is MiVote, a voting platform, information platform, and political movement set on increasing the degree to which the will of people is being heard in Australian politics. Inspired by the success of Pia Mancini’s DemocracyOS and Partido De La Red in Argentina, MiVote has built a platform which was recently awarded the Grand Global Challenge Award at the Singularity University’s Global Innovation Summit (founded by the infamous Ray Kurzweil).
