Creating a character under layers and layers of make-up that the audience can connect with on every emotional level is no small feat but Peter Macon makes it look effortless. Actor, Peter Macon is currently the second officer aboard The Orville the absolutely fantastic space dramedy by Seth MacFarlane. Peter portrays Moclan, Lt. Commander Bortus. During my interview with Peter Macon we discuss: Fan response to the show The upside and downside of transforming into a character which has led to moments of not even being recognized by his co-stars The process of transforming into Bortus Peter's passion for theater. Peter has performed in many plays including Othello, To Kill A Mockingbird, and Macbeth Burritos as a weapon (sorry, no context here - you'll have to listen) The subtle art of sneaking concessions into a movie theater Winning an Emmy while in grad school for HBO's Animated Tales of the World Voicing a character on Family Guy Landing the role of Bortus The genius of Seth MacFarlane Dive into The Orville, specifically a few episodes including About A Girl, The Sanctuary, and Primal Urges You will be silent and enjoy this incredible interview. A misstep will also entertain you in my thinking I could speak a word of the Moclan language. ja'loja!!! Live and learn! Pastor Bill: [0:31] Hello and welcome to season 3 episode 42 of the Berean Manifesto; Faith, Hope, and Love for the Modern Christian, I am Pastor Bill and I am joined by Pastor Newms. How you doing Pastor Newms? Did you have a good day? Pastor Newms: [0:55] I did, I'm tired, I'm real tired. I've been real tired all week. Pastor Bill: [0:59] Too tired hmm yeah you've been taking a lot of naps. Pastor Newms: [1:08] I have, I've been very very tired for some reason - four minutes - I don't know I'm tired. I think my brains trying to do too much and so it's burning itself out with all the stuff I'm trying to do in my head. Pastor Bill: [1:34] We got Biggs on Twitch is already gotten on to join us, hey Biggs. How you doing man? He's joining us live, as you could do anyone listening to this in the podcast form or watching the video later we record this podcast live on Sunday evenings, at 6:30 p.m. Central Standard Time. Biggs is board, he's bored. Are you bored in the house? Pastor Newms: [2:02] He's been he's been home too much because of this chip shortage. Pastor Bill: [2:05] Yes, forced vacation. That's what's holding up my gaming computer too and for us to be able to do Gaming With The Pastor's, the chip thing is. Zaidiee is here, and so is Phoenix. They're both joining us on Twitch, now when you join us live you can join in on Twitch, Facebook, or YouTube. Pastor Newms: [2:34] Your phone is no not maybe not don't touch it. Pastor Bill: [2:40] Is my video of. Pastor Newms: [2:43] No no. Pastor Bill: [2:44] What's my phone doing. Pastor Newms: [2:45] It's it's I see more of you than I normally do and I actually see part of your bed but I don't think the stream does I won't know till I click the button, I can't remember if I have that I can't remember if I have that part edited when you were sitting earlier you were in front of it I didn't realize I'm sorry. Pastor Bill: [3:08] Interesting, let me I can fix that. Pastor Newms: [3:12] Don't know what's different because usually we can't see that much of you either I don't know what's going on. Pastor Bill: [3:19] Yeah if I am if I bring the camera too far down after I've centered it on the middle of my rug back here then it exposes the edge of the rug and then you can see, part of my there we go now it's gone all better. [3:43] I'm looking at I'm looking in teams at what my phone is sending out. Pastor Newms: [3:47] Well no I know but my side is different because I have your video editing. Pastor Bill: [3:54] Right but you can't have more video than what I'm sending is what I'm saying. You can make it smaller but you can't make it bigger. . Pastor Newms: [4:02] Well I can make it bigger and distort it like I'll get out I can show just your nose. Pastor Bill: [4:04] No I mean I mean I mean you can't add more image to what I'm sending you then what I'm sending. Pastor Newms: [4:15] I can add images all day. Pastor Bill: [4:18] Oh my gosh you know what I mean dude, doood. [4:25] You gotta rile me up, huh? Is that what's going on? you are in a mood. Pastor Newms: [4:27] I'm in a mood, I'm tired. You know I get in a mood when I'm tired, I'm not even sitting up straight very slouchy. Pastor Bill: [4:36] Just like chilling so I'm here but I'm chilling. Pastor Newms: [4:41] 30 seconds - I almost fell asleep when I was grinding hostiles earlier. Pastor Bill: [4:49] Faction hunt and it kills so many faction hostiles in that Star Trek game right now it's ridiculous. Pastor Newms: [5:12] And we're live. Pastor Bill: [5:13] All right now that you can see my face and now that we've given time for people to show up. Hello and Welcome to season 3 episode 42 of the Berean Manifesto; Faith, Hope, and Love for the Modern Christian. Tonight we are talking about walking on water, not an activity that I would recommend that you go out and just try willy-nilly. Um because it may not work, and if you're trying to recreate the events from Matthew chapter 14, you're probably going to die because it was sometime between 4 and 6 a.m. in the morning and there was a storm going and the waves were rather high and it was less walking on the water as it was, like water parkour. Pastor Newms: [6:17] So so I have a question, you didn't do any of the beginning stuff. Pastor Bill: [6:24] Which beginning stuff? Pastor Newms: [6:25] We didn't do the how was your week we didn't do the how was your week we didn't do the well but you just jumped right in and I got my cards open and. Pastor Bill: [6:35] It's called a soft open. Pastor Newms: [6:37] Oh well you confused me because we've not done soft opens we usually. Pastor Bill: [6:41] Normally we do a warm-up and then we just do a hard open. I decided to do a soft open and then we'll do a warm-up and then we'll do. Pastor Newms: [6:49] I'm tired and bald why would you change things like that today. Pastor Bill: [6:53] You're tired and bald like that has anything to do with it. Pastor Newms: [6:56] Yeah that's that's that's the excuses that's excuses I'm using today I'm not sitting up. Pastor Bill: [7:03] Confused Zaidiee on Twitch as well. Why are you switching things up? Got a pattern we gotta follow the pattern okay fine. Pastor Newms: [7:10] Yeah I'm I'm too OCD to not follow. Pastor Bill: [7:13] Okay fine. Pastor Newms: [7:14] A pattern. Pastor Bill: [7:16] Soft soft open canceled how was your week Pastor Newms? Pastor Newms: [7:28] No it's it's it's I'm sorry I'm you've completely thrown me off now. Pastor Bill: [7:34] I've completely thrown you. Pastor Newms: [7:36] You have, no it was pretty good, I was busy with work one of my co-workers got married this week and so because of that I want I want a cough drop so because of that I had to pick up some of the, some of his stuff so he could get married and it was a very pretty, pretty service that we got to watch online because he invited us and so it was good. It was a pretty good week, and I started working on the game again that I've been working on that I've changed so many times that I basically am not working on the same game or anything close to the same game that I started working on several years ago, and so I restarted that this week so that was good. Pastor Bill: [8:31] Who was it Tolkien one of the bigger one of the big authors that we like, they had this practice of they'd write a chapter of a story and then they would throw it away and they'd rewrite it and they throw it away and they rewrite it and then do that seven times, and the logic was if it's good enough to be in the story then it'll make it to the seventh revision. Pastor Newms: [9:00] Hmm that's a lot of work and I'm lazy. Pastor Bill: [9:04] That is a lot of work yeah but that's basically what you've done with this game. [9:14] Well but still it's the same kind you know you unintentionally are following this concept of you know what's worthy to be there will make it to the end. Pastor Newms: [9:25] And is your camera are you on the right wifi? I know we already checked that nevermind. Pastor Bill: [9:33] What is your issue with my camera. Pastor Newms: [9:35] You're just very you're very blurry. Pastor Bill: [9:38] Yeah I'm on the cell signal. Pastor Newms: [9:40] Okay you're just very blurry it's probably the storms and stuff that are everywhere or something. Pastor Bill: [9:46] It's pretty cloudy here but it hasn't been storming here. Pastor Newms: [9:50] You're just very blurry and I hate it because mine goes out for me so I look all crisp in the corner, at least what I see and I know when it goes out it becomes pixelated but I look all crisp in the corner and then you're like. Pastor Bill: [10:13] Biggs says it's trying to focus on the clock, we can test that theory. Pastor Newms: [10:20] I like the new clock. Pastor Bill: [10:22] Me too, me too. [10:33] Is it better? No? Okay good okay good because I want to put my clock back up. Pastor Newms: [10:46] See now you broke it yep yep you broke it. Pastor Bill: [10:55] Just need to find the little mounting hole. Pastor Newms: [10:57] Ah okay okay okay how was your. Pastor Bill: [11:01] Okay hey you go now you're supposed to ask me about my so my week was good, Walmarts are putting out their Halloween decorations so that's exciting. Pastor Newms: [11:13] Your favorite holiday. Pastor Bill: [11:14] Change of the seasons coming through huh. Pastor Newms: [11:16] Your favorite holiday. Pastor Bill: [11:18] Yes it's my favorite holiday. Get to mock the darkness that I was once a part of and belittle its power, and celebrate that it's been defeated that the darkness has been defeated it's a very good holiday for me to mark. Biggs says my clock has the wrong time. Pastor Newms: [11:37] No it's 6:42. Pastor Bill: [11:39] No that's the right time. Pastor Newms: [11:42] You know, are your lights changing at a quicker Pace than they normally do? Pastor Bill: [11:48] I don't think so. Pastor Newms: [11:51] Cuz your light changed and you froze for a second. Pastor Bill: [11:56] Um I could go check but the apps on my phone you'd lose camera for a second. Pastor Newms: [12:03] No it's fine. Pastor Bill: [12:11] Roxanne, I'm sorry Bat Brains on YouTube says my camera angle seems to be higher. Pastor Newms: [12:15] It is your beards right up against the thing it's okay though it's not bad. Pastor Bill: [12:23] How's that is that. Pastor Newms: [12:24] About it and now it's crisp, do not ask me why it's literally it's either you're it I don't know man. Pastor Bill: [12:34] Anyway so yeah so starting to see, little things about Halloween coming out which is fun for me for stated reasons, and, yeah so it's been an exciting week getting to see Halloween stuff rolling out unfortunately CVS hasn't started rolling out their Halloween stuff yet so I was disappointed when I went in there for some cough drops because, Walmart is having a really hard time keeping cough drops in stock, so in a CVS for some cough drops I mean shocker right big shocker that Walmart's having trouble keeping cough drops and stuff. Pastor Newms: [13:15] It's only it's actually only yours. Pastor Bill: [13:18] Yeah it's only these it's only these cough drops that they're having trouble keeping its. Pastor Newms: [13:20] No no no it's only your Walmart because your family eats too many. Pastor Bill: [13:26] My family buys non stop. Pastor Newms: [13:29] Ricola. Pastor Bill: [13:33] I guess I got too close to the camera cuz my whole camera is my home phone screen went black and then when I pulled away it went back to normal Zaidiee says she's confused about something I don't know if she's confused about but she's confused about something. Pastor Newms: [13:47] She often doesn't know what she's confused about so. Pastor Bill: [13:51] - me often. Pastor Newms: [13:54] I'm a get in trouble that's good I like Halloween I. [14:05] Yeah you might want to restart your app because I'm not getting any Echo echo. Pastor Bill: [14:14] Echo echo. Pastor Newms: [14:16] It's really rude. Pastor Bill: [14:20] He said cough drops like three times. Pastor Newms: [14:22] No he just said cough drops three times. Pastor Bill: [14:23] No I actually said cough drops three times that wasn't an echo yeah so that's exciting and then. [14:35] That's about everything that happened in my week, is the release of Halloween stuff about some decorations little bit of decorations. [14:49] Stuff I can't talk about decorations decorations I can't talk about because we don't want the kids to see them until October first you know the reveal of the beginning of the season. Pastor Newms: [15:02] Yeah you should talk about the fact that you shaved over here and then you got the special comb to keep your beard straight because it looks really on point. Pastor Bill: [15:11] So yeah so I retrimmed the sides of my hair and I cut it a little higher because it wasn't quite right so it's more Viking-ish now and the top and then don't roll your eyes I like it, and then Walmart has this new section for Beard care so I have some good conditioner and some some of their beard oil and I got a beard straightener brush that heats up to 400 degrees, and then I can straighten my beard so my beard looks all straight and then I trimmed up the edges so that it's kind of you know shorter back here and pointed down here to like following the angle of my chin and so my beard looks on point, what are you doing with your hands. Pastor Newms: [15:56] What we're seeing you do with your hands. Pastor Bill: [15:59] Am I am I choppy. Pastor Newms: [16:01] Yeah it's funny we stay on a phone call pretty much, seventy percent of our week probably while we're sitting in our offices or so and, Sundays are the worst for your internet connection for some reason and it is so funny because we. Pastor Bill: [16:25] All day Sunday. Pastor Newms: [16:26] We hardly ever have any trouble except for on Sunday, before and after your your video is completely Frozen but your sound. Pastor Bill: [16:36] I was going to say the same thing about yours. Pastor Newms: [16:38] Yeah your sound is still. Pastor Bill: [16:40] Video I'm receiving from you is completely Frozen. Pastor Newms: [16:43] Yeah yeah it'll catch up in a second you just have a really really great look on your face and I'm going to actually screenshot it because it's. Pastor Bill: [16:51] I'm going to leave teams on my video and. Pastor Newms: [16:57] I didn't get to snip it. Pastor Bill: [17:00] After I reset my cell connection you didn't you didn't get to snip it. Pastor Newms: [17:04] Oh I didn't get to snippet, your mean. Pastor Bill: [17:08] Let's see that's better I got more bars now let's see if that video is better speaker make sure the audio is off so we don't get real feedback from my video audio signal. Pastor Newms: [17:19] Yeah yeah so this is what happens guys with oh I gotta pin you again now you're all off. Pastor Bill: [17:26] That's what I'm doing I have to pin you on my phone there we go okay how's that is that better. Pastor Newms: [17:32] Yeah at the moment we'll see the downside is is like, teams did this thing where like the Ekklesian House info you can't minimize it anymore and so I have to pin you but then it's still just makes you bigger and then I have to adjust. Pastor Bill: [17:47] And by Ekklesian House info you mean my audio channel. Pastor Newms: [17:53] Yes which is using our Ekklesian House info church email. Pastor Bill: [18:03] Because we have to send my video and my audio in two separate signals. Pastor Newms: [18:08] Yes. Pastor Bill: [18:10] On two separate devices on two separate internet connections. Pastor Newms: [18:14] Yes. Pastor Bill: [18:15] Because teams can't handle pulling both of them at the same time. Pastor Newms: [18:21] Oh and it's the fact that you live in the country and it can't handle it. Pastor Bill: [18:25] Okay but I we talked on Discord all the time and even when he tried to use Discord on a Sunday it gave us the same problems. Pastor Newms: [18:34] It's just Sundays I don't know what it is. Pastor Bill: [18:36] Sundays, we could start recording live on another day I mean. Pastor Newms: [18:44] But Sunday is the day we do this. Pastor Bill: [18:46] We could do Saturday night we could do Friday night. Pastor Newms: [18:48] But Sunday's the day we do this. Pastor Bill: [18:51] Okay I'm just saying it's flexible we can go anytime we want. Pastor Newms: [18:58] I have to. Pastor Bill: [19:00] Alright it's time for. Pastor Newms: [19:01] All week all week at work I have to pretend to be flexible I'm not a flexible person please stop, all right. Pastor Bill: [19:13] It's time for Getting to Know the Pastor's. [19:20] If you were told that you could watch only one television show a week for the next 12 months which show would you choose to watch? I mean, Stargate SG-1. Pastor Newms: [19:41] Oh Pastor Bill: [19:42] That was like a no-brainer for me like. Pastor Newms: [19:44] Yeah you follow. Pastor Bill: [19:45] How many times have I watched through SG-1? 50-60 times I've watched the whole series, I literally fall asleep with Stargate SG-1 running on my iPad. Pastor Newms: [19:59] Yeah yeah SG yeah that's easy for you if I had to watch one show you have. For Zaidiee it would definitely be Criminal Minds she watches that constantly, that's her fall asleep show which I don't get. Pastor Bill: [20:13] I don't get that either that's that that doesn't feel like. Pastor Newms: [20:16] It explains a lot about why. Pastor Bill: [20:18] Old friends that sounds that sounds horrible. Pastor Newms: [20:21] That's why sleep with Kevlar on in case she tries to gank me in the middle of the night. Pastor Bill: [20:27] Incase she tries to give you a Moclan divorce. Pastor Newms: [20:30] Yeah no Moclan divorces. Which they are almost done they are in post production of season 3 is what I heard. Which I am excited for season 3 of the Orville because that was a good show if I had to pick one show and watch it all the time, I don't think I could I can't make it through a whole episode some days of any show. Pastor Bill: [21:05] You'd probably watch SCP videos you'd be like one SCP video a week. Pastor Newms: [21:10] I really could, I watch I watch way too many SCP videos I probably watch about five to six a day because I follow about six channels that all put out, bi-daily or multi it all depends and. [21:45] I do like From Dusk Till Dawn, it is a good show I like how deep they took it from the movie to the show, Zaidiee, it's really funny Zaidiee's tried to watch it about four times and I've only gotten through most of season two but, every time we turn it on she falls asleep, so like she was like okay not in bed I'll do it myself middle of the day I come out of my office and I'm like where are you what are you, she's asleep on the couch and it's on and I'm like and this is not a this is not a nice show it's about snake, people from Mexico that, you could kind of think of as vampires but not really and they're basically snake demons and they're trying to take over all of Mexico and most of America and so, it is not like, a show I mean people are getting body parts ripped off and stuff it's not a great show and she's just like I'm gonna sleep now. Pastor Bill: [23:03] I have never made it all the way through the first Thor movie or Despicable Me 2, either one of them, I fall asleep every time one of those movies comes on I still don't know the whole story of the first Thor movie because I've never been able to stay awake through the whole thing. I don't know how it ends even I've never seen the end of the first Thor movie I just I can't stay awake through that one in Despicable Me 2 I just can't see a way through either one of them I fell asleep in a Star Trek movie once, my friends surprised me and took me to the movie theater to see Star Trek Nemesis, and it was like it's 10 p.m. showing and I like just straight I've been up since like 5 a.m. and I just straight slept, Biggs is like okay we're done Biggs on Twitch says 30 second buffer, kind of like not quite ready for that bro, we haven't even talked about walking on water yet. Pastor Newms: [24:13] Oh I don't know you already did. Pastor Bill: [24:15] No I introduced it with a soft open good gravy, all right it's time to get on point we're warmed up, when that when the audience starts going wrap it up wrap it that's what I'm like okay was definitely time to start. Pastor Newms: [24:38] Oh I will say though I did have a very depressing weekend because one of both of our favorite directors had a pop-up store pop up in Nashville, so that the the pop-up store for Mooby's restaurant and we were not able to, go because we are currently quarantined because my daughter got exposed to Covid but she has no symptoms so that's good but we have been quarantined because of it. Pastor Bill: [25:25] So we have a comment from someone on Twitch, Gabriel we are both married happily married so. Pastor Newms: [25:33] Technically straight because you didn't answer their question. Pastor Bill: [25:38] It doesn't matter if we're straight or gay because we're both married. Pastor Newms: [25:43] Yeah but they asked a question. Pastor Bill: [25:46] Well they said you look cute and then asked if we were gay and. Pastor Newms: [25:49] But that could also imply we're married to each other but either way. Pastor Bill: [25:55] We're not available you look cute are you gay, well we're not available it doesn't matter. Pastor Newms: [26:01] I guess but it's nice to get complimented thank. Pastor Bill: [26:07] Yes the yeah thank you Gabriel appreciate the interest but I've been married for 15 years I'm quite happy with my situation and Newms has been married for. Pastor Newms: [26:23] Whoa that's an appropriate. Pastor Bill: [26:26] That's that's all we didn't mean to be rude. Pastor Newms: [26:29] No definitely not. Pastor Bill: [26:30] And we're definitely not Pedo, whoa. Pastor Newms: [26:36] Okay well. Pastor Bill: [26:37] It's time for somebody to get banned from the twitch Channel, bye Gabriel. Pastor Newms: [26:50] It's going to take a second because for some reason I'm not logged in. Pastor Bill: [26:55] You're not logged in. [27:15] It does slow things down. [27:27] He doesn't like your Funko Pops. Pastor Newms: [27:29] He did they do not. Pastor Bill: [27:31] They, I'm sorry I shouldn't have said "he," they. Pastor Newms: [27:37] Do do do. Pastor Bill: [27:40] Oh just trolling this Gabriel person is straight trolling now. Pastor Newms: [27:47] I didn't there it goes it's gone. Pastor Bill: [27:52] So we try to give everyone a voice because everyone needs Jesus, everyone needs community, and we try to give everyone a voice. But that voice has to be respectful and we always ask that it stays on target, and so you know we tried to address that person, as kindly as possible and then they just went into left field that was crazy. Pastor Newms: [28:24] Oh wow the restream bot is so good that if you ban someone the restream bot actually removes their messages from inside Discord. Pastor Bill: [28:34] I removed their messages from inside Discord. Pastor Newms: [28:36] Oh never mind. Pastor Bill: [28:37] One at a time while you were trying to login to Twitch. Pastor Newms: [28:40] I thought it was just that good. Pastor Bill: [28:42] No I did that yeah I'll have to go scrub them from Facebook later, anyway okay so what is the scripture, so we're looking at Matthew chapter 14 and we're going to talk there but the main thing we're going to be looking at is in, certain verse 28 where Peter steps out on the Water right and it's worthy to mention that this is the only time it talks about Peter walking on the water and I didn't realize that this event is also in Mark and John, but Peter doesn't walk on the water and Newms brought it up earlier I was like it's only in Matthew and he's like well then what is this in Mark and what is this and John and I was like huh, it's the same event right before it it reads the exact same except for the walking on the water and then they go you know to the same place after, and what makes that. Pastor Newms: [30:00] I have a theory okay. Pastor Bill: [30:02] Well let me hold on what makes it even more confusing is that Peter is one of the people that Mark, took notes from in order to write his gospel and Luke did as well and Luke doesn't even bring it up, and John talks about it but the only right gospel writer who was even there when it happened was Matthew, and then the gospel that, you know that literally had Peter telling Mark things that happened doesn't mention what happened with Peter walking on the water and then Newms was like I bet it was this okay what's your theory Newms. Pastor Newms: [30:55] So I think what happened was what. Pastor Bill: [31:05] Twitch says Discord says that I'm typing things. Pastor Newms: [31:10] I'm typing things it's your bought so it says it's you. Pastor Bill: [31:14] How are you typing into the bot. Pastor Newms: [31:16] I sent things via restream DOT IO. Pastor Bill: [31:19] Oh that would make sense yeah. Pastor Newms: [31:21] So then it picked it up and it should have put it in there now, oh that is weird it says it's you I forgot about that I have to put it in as Pastor Newms okay anyway so the, my opinion which seems to be a very Peter thing to do this is only my opinion there's nothing to back this up, but as Billiam mentioned Mark and John both got their accounts from Peter and others whereas. Pastor Bill: [31:56] So much John necessarily but definitely more. Pastor Newms: [31:59] Matthew was there you know written from there I think, Peter and his retelling left it out like yeah you know cuz it's the exact same verbiage it's the exact same everything but the part about Peter is missing now there could be many many reasons for that, but that's my joke. Pastor Bill: [32:25] I'm sure when Matthew got to that part of Mark's transcript he went wait a second that's not how that went down there's some details missing there. Pastor Newms: [32:38] Yeah so you know who knows. Pastor Bill: [32:43] Okay so basically what's going on here is first off chapter 14 of the of Matthew starts with John the Baptist being beheaded, right, which is an interesting time for the people of Israel because there were a lot of people and I mean a lot of people who thought John, was going to be the Messiah, or John was going to be the prophet now we've talked about before that the people of Israel were waiting for these two separate people. [33:28] The Messiah who would come in and drive the Romans out of the land and reset up you know Israel as a conquering Kingdom, and save them you know nationally this is what is this this nationalism idea of the Messiah, and then there was the prophet who would come and he would move in the power of Moses, and he would do Miracles and he would you know, correct and and reshape the religious side of everything, and what we talked about before was the re one of the main reasons that they missed Jesus when he showed up was because the Messiah and the prophet were the same person. [34:19] And so this conquering King that they were looking for was also the prophet and this you know person to reset their religion, was also the Messiah. [34:35] But then weren't looking for you know this combined person they were looking for one or the other and so they thought John the Baptist might be this person so John the Baptist gets beheaded, and so obviously he's out, and so this causes from well we surmise from the writings that this causes the amount of people that are seeking out Jesus, to increase significantly in number, and so we get this event where Jesus feeds the 5000 and if you're just listening instead of watching I used my little quotation marks with my fingers, because this is 5,000 men, and their wives, and their children. [35:32] Any animals that they happen to have with them there's those things have to eat too so we're not talking actually 5000 people, yes I can 5,000 people and by the time you add wives then you're probably talking more like 8,000 to 9,000 because not everybody's married but it was a pretty standard thing to be married in their culture, to talk about maybe 9,000 people then you get two kids and and Jewish families I mean, they were making kids left and right you know there was no this whole like you know the the and I know it's probably not really a it's unearned an done, unwarranted but there's the old saying about Catholic Families how Catholics have lots of children, this is the same the kind of thing they're you know so you've got like two to three kids per couple right. [36:34] And so now suddenly you've got what I mean, you talking about for eight to twelve thousand more people on top of the nine that you had there before that's 1920 something you could easily have 20,000 people here, listening to Jesus speak and they all got fed and it's just this miracle of breaking the Five Loaves and the two fish right. [37:04] And so what happened in this event, is that now knowing that John the Baptist couldn't be the Messiah were the prophet these people thought now that Jesus must be, the Messiah or the prophet and when he fed them the 5,000 the FED these 5,000 men and their wives and their kids and they then wanted to make him King, and so Jesus removes himself from the situation he puts the disciples on a boat, and tells them to go to the other side tells the crowds to go away and then he goes in search climbing a mountain. [37:56] And so the crowds go away and he goes climbs a mountain to pray obviously because that's Bible says he often went off by himself to pray. [38:07] And then later in the night there's a huge storm, and even now it is common on this body of water the Sea of Galilee, for there to be huge storms that just pop up out of nowhere no warning and they cause the waves to get open a rain and the lightning and the thunder so, the King James says it was about the Third Watch... The Fourth Watch. [38:44] Fourth Watch The Fourth Watch of the night which puts it sometime between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. in the morning, um it wouldn't have been four to six a.m. if this happened twenty years earlier because the Fourth Watch of the night under Jewish culture, would have been 2 to 3 a.m. but because they were under Roman occupation and then this is written later still under Roman occupation the Assumption there is that they're using the by Roman. [39:27] The Reckoning of the watch of the night which puts us between 4 and 6 a.m. so the storm is going the ship is going and the people in the and the boat are afraid and this isn't the first time they've been in a storm in a boat and Afraid, the last time this happened Jesus was below decks take a nap, and they were like dude do you not care that we're about to die and he comes up and he gets up there and he's like, shut up I'm trying to sleep not those exact words but that idea, and the storm stops but he's not there to do that for them now what are they going to do and they're looking out and they see a ghost, out on the waves you know make it his way across the sea out on the waves with the storm going. [40:33] And Jesus says have courage it is I don't be afraid, and Peter got to leave it to Peter Peters amazing, it is like Peter never met a fence that I don't believe he wouldn't climb or break down to get where he was going, Peter's like yeah I see that bull on the other side of the fence but I bet I can climb this fence and run across that field before the bull notices as the kind of person Peter is so, Peter says Lord if it is you, command me to come to you on the water and Jesus says come, so Peter climbs out of the boat and goes over Jesus and then when he takes his eyes off of Jesus and he sees how strong the wind is, he becomes afraid and starts to sink and cries out Lord save me, immediately Jesus reached out his hand caught hold of him and said to him you of little faith why did you doubt. [41:52] And they got into the boat the wind stops those in the boat worshipped him and said truly you are the son of God, and I guess I did know that this is another things because I know that the next thing that happened was they realized they were suddenly on, the far Shore their trip was done they were oh we're here just like that, and then they went and did you know Ministry. [42:33] Alright Pastor Newms you have any thoughts. Pastor Newms: [42:38] I mean the story is taught and used for several different. [43:02] Faith and how we have to have faith and once you stop having faith even if it's for a moment of doubt, you could sink there's the thought process of you know, keep your eyes on Jesus there's there's all kinds of areas that this scripture can be used to teach, personally for me it's always been the have faith even when you can't see, because, you know with the waves moving in this and that that that's the problem he was like I'm going to sink I can't you know I lost sight of Jesus for a second it wasn't the actual site connection that, it wasn't mrs. his mm you wasn't like you if I'm looking in his eyes I can float you know it was the faith and when his eyes were gone that's when he lost the faith and so for me that's always been, a big thing is keeping your faith even when you can't see Jesus in a situation and what's going on, because. [44:18] That's happened to me often you know where it's like one of those words like I know I'm here for a reason why am I here and so we have to continue moving, forward in those situations. Pastor Bill: [44:34] I've always seen it as an big shocker here I've always seen it as an encouragement which you know that's, for me the Bible is always it's encouraging it's always you know, it's not about your bad your bad it's all about you know this is how to be good this is how to do good this is and when it gives examples of bad things that happen it's a cautionary you know, I would encourage you to avoid this because this could happen it's not a you know if you do this I'm going to punish you anyway so I always saw this as an encouragement that. [45:12] So they're in the boat and they think they see Jesus in, right and Peter believes he heard the Lord tell him to step out into something, and so for me this is this is one of those situations where it's like I feel like, I'm supposed to be doing this thing for the Lord I feel like I've seen Jesus in this thing I feel like I'm supposed to be doing this thing I feel like I've heard his voice tell me to do this thing, it's just encouragement to step out on the water pursue that thing, and it has this cautionary tale of while you're pursuing this thing you believe the Lord wants you to be doing. [46:04] Keep your necessarily eyes but your site you know your heart your faith your your trajectory keep that Focus towards the Lord, so that, all the challenges and all of the trials and all of the people calling you names on Twitch doesn't discourage you, from pursuing what God wants you to do in this case, bring faith hope and love for modern Christians, um that's that's what this podcast does you know we encourage people to take into the scriptures and own what they believe, and all of that is you know. [46:56] Built around the scripture of these three things remain safe hope and love and the greatest of these is love well the only things that remain our faith hope and love and those are the important things, so we need to focus on those three areas, while we're encouraging people to dig deep and own their beliefs and own their Christianity it should be focused in these three areas in faith hope and love, and mainly in love, and I think we do a good job of that making sure that we love and that we do things to show love and that we encourage love, and. [47:42] We Inspire Faith and Hope and so for me this is always been that thing of well if the Lord is calling you to do it and you feel like you have confirmation, then step out on the water, and keep your eyes set on the prize keep your focus on the Lord keep your faith on the Lord so that's where I see this walking on water and, in the in the artwork for this this episode actually quoted, a song written by Lifehouse and I have closed the lyrics, sorry guys I'm gonna back up I would love to play the song for you guys but that is not allowed. Pastor Newms: [48:35] Yeah I know. Pastor Bill: [48:38] That would flag us for a copyright violation even though the purpose of playing it for you is to encourage you and to introduce you possibly introduce you to a great band that has some Christian guys at the helm of it, he used to be a worship band when they were in California. Pastor Newms: [48:56] Great is relative but no k. Pastor Bill: [48:59] I love Lighthouse life house. Pastor Newms: [49:02] I know you do. Pastor Bill: [49:06] Um okay so the lyrics are how long have I been in this storm so overwhelmed by the oceans shapeless form, waters getting harder to tread with these waves crashing over my head if I could just see you everything would be alright, if I'd see you this Darkness would turn to light, and I will walk on water and you will catch me if I fall and I will get lost into your eyes I know everything will be alright I know everything is alright, I know you didn't bring me out here to drown so why am I ten feet under and upside down, barely surviving has become my purpose because I'm so used to living underneath the surface. [50:01] If I could just see you everything would be alright if I'd see you this Darkness would turn to light, and I will walk on water and you will catch me if I fall, and I will get lost into your eyes and I know everything will be alright, and I will walk on water and you will catch me if I fall, and I will get lost into your eyes I know everything will be alright, I know everything is alright everything's alright yeah everything's all right. [50:46] And so that's the lyrics to the to this the song storm and I don't know, if Jason Wade was specifically thinking about Matthew chapter 14 verses Delta 2 but knowing, that Jason Wade was a worship leader in California at a. [51:12] I forgot the name the kind of church that he was a worship leader at anyway his worship leader at church and their band we got together as worship leaders and then when Sony approached them, they brokered a deal where they couldn't write, overly religious lyrics but they could right overtly religious lyrics and they could do ministry before and after their shows, um I truly believe in my head I'm going to call we that's what people go ahead Canaan I've truly headcanon that, he is talking about this event with Peter, and equating that to his own life and the same struggle that Peter was going through here when he's walking on the water, relating that to our own lives and the things that we go through and not just callings and big things that you're supposed to do but even the day-to-day walking you know, loving the Lord and pursuing the Lord and being a Christian and standing up for what you believe in and loving others and so, yeah that's what I have for tonight that's it that's all I have did you have anything to add in the next seven minutes. Pastor Newms: [52:41] No no I mean it's a it's a, you know it's a great story and it definitely, highlights that we have to as we both said you know continue going forward and continuing to work on ourselves and continuing to, move in the direction we feel God wants us to go, but I mean that's just wrapping up and saying the same thing we've already set so this one is not an in depth, oh my gosh, Foundry issue field discussion this one is more of a encouraging hey. Pastor Bill: [53:36] And encouragement. Pastor Newms: [53:37] This is a good area, and you know sometimes some of the Greek words used can be kind of interesting in some of the passages as well. Pastor Bill: [53:52] These passages. Pastor Newms: [53:54] Yeah you know like the fact that the boat was instantly on the other side and you know. Pastor Bill: [54:04] Life House big stunt which as light or life its life house life house. Pastor Newms: [54:14] They're real slow Biggs be careful. Pastor Bill: [54:19] They're real slow what what do you mean they're slow the Great. Pastor Newms: [54:25] They say I'm not saying they are bad band I'm saying knowing Biggs is musical taste for almost 40 years now, they might not appeal to him from a music side from a lyrics I'd love them, they do not appeal to me from this side of music but, that's not a bad. Pastor Bill: [54:58] That's neither here nor there. Pastor Newms: [54:59] Yeah they're not a bad band they're not you know I don't have any issue with them I just prefer Harder Faster, ghetto. Pastor Bill: [55:10] Better Stronger. Pastor Newms: [55:12] Better is a relative term we can't say better but Tempo and, bass riffs can be definitely be measured but better is a hard one it's not bad quality they were never there not a bad band it's not it's just not my style. Pastor Bill: [55:33] Yeah alright so. Pastor Newms: [55:34] Which most of Tina stuff isn't most of the stuff Zaidiee likes so. Pastor Bill: [55:41] But I like you know I like Lifehouse and I like Coldplay and I like Switchfoot and you know that's my, stop making that awful noise this is an auditory experience and you are ruining people's time with those awful noises you're making with your throat, so now it doesn't so Life House in Switchfoot and Coldplay these are all right there in that wheelhouse of, what gets me you know and then even Stave shaker has one song that falls right into that same you know Niche so. [56:23] I just like songs like that you know that this song golden wings of gold and silver it's a nice. Pastor Newms: [56:30] Yep. Pastor Bill: [56:32] Wings of gold and silver. Pastor Newms: [56:35] Okay. Pastor Bill: [56:36] Except it's all slow in the music and it's just those words or like really intense I love it okay so this is where we do our 30-second buffer song. Pastor Newms: [56:47] Actually we have three more minutes before we do our 30-second buffer song. Pastor Bill: [56:51] We don't have to go to 7:30 we can end now. Pastor Newms: [56:57] Okay you're just all kinds of changes today. Pastor Bill: [57:04] We can talk about politics if you'd like. Pastor Newms: [57:09] That is never a good idea it is. Pastor Bill: [57:11] No it's not 30 second buffer 30 second buffer 30. Pastor Newms: [57:15] Hey we're both wearing Star Wars shirts I just realized that, but okay continue no. Pastor Bill: [57:25] Has it been 30 seconds yet no that's not how time works 30 second buffer 30 second buffer 30 second buffer you guys have a great week, now you say your thing. Pastor Newms: [57:38] Oh be safe out there guys we love. Pastor Bill: [57:41] And until next time why are you always saying I love you over top of my next time are you got to wait. Pastor Newms: [57:45] Because I love you and you're going to be the next time and we both love them. Pastor Bill: [57:50] Why do you sit at the same time. Pastor Newms: [57:52] Mean to it just happens every week. Pastor Bill: [57:54] Is it happens every week. Pastor Newms: [57:56] Every single week by we love you. Pastor Bill: [57:58] Bye.
A renowned Moclan engineer from Bortus's past joins the Orville, but he hides a secret. The post Deflectors (The Orville – S02E07) appeared first on The Geek Generation.
Bortus (Peter Macon) moves viewers through the Moclan legal system and introduces a constellation of issues related to gender identity. The crew try to see their way through the reindeer games.
Tread Perilously takes its annual look at The Orville with "Sanctuary." When the Orville takes on two Moclan passengers, Bortus learns they are harboring an infant female. Soon, he assists them in their escape from the law against female Moclans on their home planet. When Captain Mercer finds out, he leads the ship into a nebula and discovers an entire colony of female Moclans. Now discovered, their leader Heveena plans to move their entire group, but Mercer suggests taking their plight to the Union Counsel and apply to be recognized as an independent world. And while the Orville remains in orbit over the colony to defend it from a Moclan ship, the Union worlds debate the issue of their sovereignty. Also: Dolly Parton is the voice of the revolution. Erik immediately gets distracted by the surprising guest cast and the show's expanded connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation -- including episode director Jonathan Frakes! Justin notes some of the ways The Orville hits on subjects TNG was squeamish about. He also explains Moclan biology and society. Erik names one character "Alexander Rozhenko" and admits to getting distracted by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s very handsome Agent Keller. Sci-fi aliens get an examination and Erik expresses his worries about Star Trek: Picard.
