Send us a textThe rich and storied tradition of challenge coins has made its way from military culture into bourbon communities, creating meaningful connections among enthusiasts and marking achievements in the whiskey world.• Challenge coins originated with WWI pilots but became popular during Vietnam War• Different types of bourbon challenge coins include Stave & Thief Bourbon Steward certification, Kentucky Bourbon Festival commemorative coins, and community recognition coins• Coins must be carried at all times - you get only four steps to retrieve it during a challenge• If challenged and you can't produce your coin, you buy drinks; if everyone has their coin, the challenger buys• Bourbon Real Talk uses different colored coins to recognize various levels of community contribution• Kentucky Bourbon Festival coins evolve each year, from bronze 30th anniversary to gold 2024 edition• Challenge coins typically cannot be purchased - they must be earned through contribution or certification• Carrying a challenge coin signifies membership and honors the tradition of bourbon camaraderieJoin us Thursday night with Kentucky Bourbon Festival President Randy Prass to learn everything about this year's festival. Tickets go on sale April 16th for pre-sale and April 17th to the general public. The humble challenge coin carries a weighty legacy that stretches from World War I battlefields to today's bourbon tasting rooms. This episode dives deep into these tokens of honor and belonging that have become an integral part of bourbon culture.Challenge coins began with a wealthy lieutenant who gave medallions to his unit members. Legend tells how one such coin saved a pilot's life when he was captured behind enemy lines, unable to prove his identity except through this small token. The tradition evolved through the Vietnam War and eventually found a spiritual home among whiskey enthusiasts who recognized the perfect symmetry between military camaraderie and the fellowship of shared bourbon experiences. For bourbon lovers, these coins serve multiple purposes. Some mark achievements, like the coveted Stave & Thief Society's Executive Bourbon Steward certification coin. Others commemorate events, like the annually changing Kentucky Bourbon Festival coins that evolve in design and finish. Communities like Bourbon Real Talk have created elaborate hierarchies of colored coins to recognize different levels of contribution, from first-time helpers to consistent top contributors. What makes these coins special isn't just their appearance but the traditions surrounding them. The twelve rules of challenge coin etiquette transform them from mere collectibles into social catalysts. You must keep your coin within four steps at all times. When challenged, failure to produce your coin means buying drinks. If everyone shows their coin, the challenger pays up. These exchanges create spontaneous moments of connection among bourbon enthusiasts in an increasingly digital world.Whether displayed proudly on a shelf or carried faithfully in a special wallet pouch, bourbon challenge coins represent something deeper than their metal composition suggests—they're physical reminders of shared experiences, hard-earned knowledge, and community belonging. Have you earned your place in bourbon culture with a challenge coin yet? The tradition awaits.voice over Whiskey Thief If You Have Gohsts Add for SOFLSupport the showhttps://www.scotchybourbonboys.com

Aukčná spoločnosť SOGA prináša v poradí už druhú výstavu Čiernych dier – 340 grafík a 10 rokov záchrany pamiatok, ktorú môžete navštíviť v našich galerijných priestoroch na Medenej 16 v Bratislave do 28. februára 2025. Prečo, ak je situácia taká vážna a hrozí destabilizácia riadená a financovaná zo zahraničia, vláda neprijala žiadne opatrenia ani nevyhlásila výnimočný stav? Ako dopadnú dnešné protesty?Braňo Závodský sa rozprával s podpredsedom Národnej rady SR členom klubu strany Smer – SD Tiborom Gašparom a poslancom parlamentu za SaS, členom výborov pre obranu a bezpečnosť či osobitného kontrolného výboru parlamentu na kontrolu činnosti Vojenského spravodajstva Jurajom Krúpom.

In this episode, the storyteller, Kathy Shimpock, will be reading Charles Dickens' masterpiece, A Christmas Carol.   The work is a novella, first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843.  Because of the story's length, it will be read over four episodes. This is chapter four and five (or what Dickens called Stave Four, The Last of the Spirits and Stave 5, The End of It).   In this story Scrooge will have a visit from "Christmas Future."  He will again visit the home of Bob Cratchit and discover the fate of Tiny Tim and of himself too. You'll find a link in the credits to the tale, so you can read along.  At the end of each reading, there will be questions for you to journal and reflect on.  My comments on A Christmas Carol can be found on my blog entitled, "Why We Remember A Christmas Carol." Although Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol long ago, this story is relevant for today.Story:  A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas by Charles Dickens (1843). Send us a textWelcome to Stories Come to Life. I am your host, Kathryn Lopez Luker. In A Christmas Carol, the different chapters are referred to as staves because when a piece of music is written, such as a Christmas carol, the paper it is written on is marked with five-lined staves, or staffs (same thing). So, when we refer to the different chapters, I like to think of them as different verses in a beautiful carol. Now here is my father, Kenneth Luker, reading Stave Three of A Christmas Carol, when the second of the three spirits, the Ghost of Christmas Present, comes to visit Scrooge. Now sit back, relax, and listen to this story come to life.Listening to audiobooks really does count as reading, and there's no better way to relax than to hear Stories Come to Life! In Stave 3 of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, we find the ghost of Christmas Present, revealing to Scrooge the excessive abundance of the feast which is the present. I argue that it is gratitude that is the meaning of life, and hence the source of joy and happiness. The Crachit's feast is meager, but because the are grateful for it, it becomes more than they need and hence more than a meager feast, it becomes a great feast. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven!

In stave 2 of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, we find Scrooge visited (haunted) by the ghost of Christmas Past - which is his own past. Our pasts can often haunt us, and perhaps they should haunt us. The root of this haunting is that we are able to judge our present lives in light (not the Ghost has a light shining forth from his head) of our past life...or better yet, in the case of Scrooge, we are able to judge our current death in light of our former life. This awakens us to what we once knew and experienced so clearly but have since forgotten - viz. that the meaning of life lies in the gratitude and joy of being.

In this first of five lectures, I offer a Christian existentialist reading of Charles Dickens's masterpiece A Christmas Carol. This work is about the meaning of Christmas, which is the meaning of the incarnation. The life of the world, the eternal, entering into the now, in order to redeem the past, present and future through his death. The incarnation isn't separable from the crucifixion, just as the meaning of life is not separable from the meaning of death, and the meaning of the past and future is not separable from the present. Scrooge's conversion must begin with the acceptance of his death - which he comes to accept in the person of Marley (who is himself; he never painted out 'Marley' from the "Marley and Scrooge" sign) ; with the fact that he is a "...covetous old sinner." Scrooge cannot approach the meaning of his life until he acknowledges that he - like Marley, or even more so - is truly a dead man, as dead as a door nail. The book opens with "Marley was dead to begin with," it could just as well began: "Scrooge was dead to begin with"...and unless we accept this fact "nothing wonderful can become of this story."

The barrel is where the magic happens and it takes years for your whiskey to achieve it's optimal flavor. Most of us are familiar with the standard american white oak barrel with a char 4. Yet, there are hundreds, if not, thousands of combinations that go into creating a barrel from the wood species, stave seasoning, char, toasting and how it ages based on location in a geography or a floor in a warehouse. There's one guy that does all this research and that's Andrew Wiehebrink from Independent Stave. This is his third time on the show and this time he brings different aging experiments for us to taste through. We taste the same whiskey from different levels of a warehouse and even the same american single malt aged in texas and scotland. We also dive into the state of the barrel shortage, our shared distain of amburana, the shift to char 1, and what new innovations are coming from the barrel and oak alternative market. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about will today's bottles be a new dusty. Talk about what stave seasoning does for the whiskey Why does Kentucky have more extraction than Texas? What does elevation from levels on a warehouse do to the aging process? How often do you revisit experiments? Does the mashbill make a difference to your experiments? Would American Single Malt make more sense to use new vs used barrels? What did the location differences for American Single Malt experiments make? Has the barrel shortage been resolved? Do you research the human element and what consumers are looking for in taste? What do you think of Amburana and exotic wood species? How are you smoking barrels? Why is Char 1 creating a darker whiskey and are there diminishing returns? Does pot vs column still play a role?
