Father Patrick Hyde joins Patrick to discuss Joy in Lent (4:17) why do we talk about joy during Lent? What is joy? How important are circumstances in finding joy? (17:18) Danny - I find it's becoming hard to find joy in lent. In today's age, you don't see it. You tell people it's Lent, and then it's like...and then what? (21:36) Break 1 Susan - I've been going to daily Mass. Hoping to grow faith. I'm proud that I'm hauling myself out of bed every morning. Joy, getting closer to God...no. What more can I do? (31:00) How do you find joy in Lent if it has been a real struggle? (35:57) Break 2 Alfredo - I have found joy in the 7 charisms of the Holy spirit. Try to focus on that every day. Don't always get to all of them, but try. Enjoying Lent so far. (42:10) Maryann - 84 years old. Having trouble finding Joy in Lent because of my inability to participate because I'm home bound. (44:54) Annie - I had a pastor who made a point that joy and happiness are different. Happiness is fleeting...joy is forever...it's lasting. Jesus Others Yourself. Dallas Jenkins, creator of The Chosen, recently gave an excellent talk at BYU. It is exciting to hear such talks from people of other denominations. Dallas' talk was on overcoming adversity and failure by giving everything to God. With some fascinating insights from the story of the Feeding Of The Five Thousand, Dallas talks of his personal experience of failure and the new worldview he gained by reading this Biblical account. “The Chosen” creator Dallas Jenkins learned it's not our job to feed the 5,000. We bring our loaves and fishes; Christ does impossible math. BIBLE STUDY|MIRACLES OF JESUS SERIES|THE FOURTH MIRACLE OF JESUS PT.22|THE FEEDING OF 5,000 MEN WITH 5 LOAVES OF BREAD AND 2 FISHES|CHIMDI OHAHUNA Mark 6:31-34 This episode on the Miracles of Jesus reveals that no one is too small or insignificant to be used by God to perform miracles. The only requirement is that one must make themselves available to be used. Until you offer yourself to God, there is no limit to the ways in which He can utilize you for His divine purposes. Consider the young lad who willingly left his meal behind, fully soaking in the words of God. When the moment came to eat, he demonstrated his willingness by placing his modest offerings—a mere five loaves and two fish—into the hands of Jesus. It was then that these humble provisions were transformed into a miraculous feast. This act serves as a powerful reminder that what we perceive as small or insignificant can be more than enough when placed in God's hands. Just as Moses only needed the rod he carried to lead his people from bondage, we too must recognize that everything we have is sufficient for God's work. Moreover, the lad exemplified a generosity of spirit; he was not stingy with what he possessed. It's crucial to understand that stinginess cannot foster miracles. We must remember that we have received freely, and it is our duty to give freely in return. Much like the widow described in 1 Kings 17:11-15, who generously offered her last meal, we may find ourselves giving to God through others. God often works through human vessels to ask for what we have at hand, inviting us to contribute to His miraculous works. When we give to the Lord, we must be open to receive the blessings that come from such generosity. It is also vital to note that the lad was in the company of Jesus. To witness such profound miracles, we too must dwell in the presence of God. Absence from God does not yield miraculous outcomes. Thus, living in the presence of God is essential; our faith anchors us there, allowing us to continually experience His glory and power. So, let us remember that no matter how small our contributions may seem, when we fully surrender our resources to God, He is capable of performing great things through us. In our willingness to give, to be present, and to trust in His divine purpose, we open the door to miraculous possibilities. Listen to the full teaching now. As we continue our way through the gospel of Mark, Debbie tells the story of when the Bread of Life used 5 loaves and 2 fish to feed 5,000.
Mk 6Any text is produced in a particular time, place, and context. In the case of the Bible, that context is always very different from ours as readers. “White North American Christians, especially those of us from the privileged strata of society, must come to terms with the fact that our reading site for the Gospel of Mark is empire, locus imperium” (Ched Meyers, Binding The Strong Man). This location means that we have to do the work, as best we can, to separate ourselves from our assumptions to hear what the text is saying to its intended audience.Lent provides an opportune moment to do just that. To let go of our privileged assumptions and to read from the place of surrender. This Lent, we will pick up where we left off in the fall to work through the second half of Mark's Gospel. ★ Support this podcast ★

An update from Pastor Ramazan Arkan of Antalya Evangelical Church in Turkey and encouragement from Matthew 14:13-21.
John 6:1-15 Everyone knows and loves the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000. But was Jesus content just to give people bread? Or was it all meant to point to something greater? In this sermon Pastor Mitch talks about how we often misdiagnose our truest needs, but Jesus is crystal clear on what they are. He often helps us in a physical way, especially through the help of others, but his ultimate purpose was to help us spiritually. He isn't our genie, he isn't our government aid, he is our messiah who saves us from Satan, Sin, Death, and Hell. Thank you for learning alongside us. Let us know how we can pray for you. We are a revitalizing church in the Poe Mill neighborhood of Greenville, SC. Our mission is to make disciples that transform our neighborhood with the gospel of Jesus. Our vision is to see Jesus-centered living, church revitalization, and neighborhood-based missions happening in Poe Mill, West Greenville, and beyond! If you have any questions for us, email us at info@griggschurch.com
When Life Doesn't Add Up. Today, Pastor Michael is talking about the two miracles of fish and bread. There is the feeding of the 5,000, known as the “Miracle of Five Loaves and Two Fish,” which occurred near Bethsaida, near the Sea of Galilee. This was in Mark, Chapter 6. The second is the feeding of 4,000, known as the “Miracle of Seven Loaves and a Few Fish,” which occurred near the region of Gerasenes, near Decapolis. That second one is a miracle that essentially falls through the cracks (or could be said to be in the shadow of) due to the more known first miracle. There are good reasons to believe these are two separate miracles. Different amounts of loaves and fish, between the miracles. Different amounts of leftovers; the 5,000 had 12 leftovers (one for each of the Disciples), and the 4,000 had seven leftover baskets; Mark and Matthew both include these events. The disciples had one loaf of bread in the boat they were traveling in and worried it wouldn't feed everyone. The disciples here really had a tough time feeling that Jesus could feed everyone; they have seen him feed 5,000 and then 4,000 and then they stress over a single loaf for 13 people! Arguing amongst themselves and didn't look up. The core thought in today's lesson: When life doesn't add up, look up! Look to Jesus for the answer. Mark 8:21-22 (CSB Study Bible Notes) 8:21 This repeats the question of v. 17. The disciples still did not get it. This is Jesus's most severe rebuke of the disciples in the Gospel of Mark, but there was a bright spot. They didn't understand yet what Jesus was about. 8:22-10:52 In this section, Jesus completed his ministry in Galilee and began his journey to Jerusalem. It was time to leave the crowds, limit his miracles, and teach the disciples about his impending death. Verses can be found in Mark 8: 1-21. Adrianna, Giuli and Sofi discuss restlessness. What does the experience of dissatisfied longing reveal about our hearts? How does contemporary society tend to anesthetize our restlessness? Where have we seen that our restlessness can become a path to discovering the presence of Christ, through prayer and companionship? More important than acquiring fame or fortune is being what God wants us to be. Before we came to this earth, we may have been fashioned to do some small good in this life that no one else can do. The Lord said to Jeremiah, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations” If God has a work for those with many talents, I believe he also has an important work for those of us who have few.”[1994–A:4, James E. I dress rehearse disaster on the regular. If I'm driving in the car with my girls and we're having fun bopping along to Ellie Holcomb, it's so easy for me to spiral into thinking “what if we get in a car wreck” because everyone knows that the scene in the movie right before the car wreck is that closeup shot of a family getting along great in the car together. You know tragedy is going to strike. But here's the thing - I don't want to spend my life waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop. I want to be in the present moment - regardless of whether that present moment is joyful or challenging or just plain boring - and I don't want to spend my time worrying. So how can we move from worry to wonder in our daily lives as Catholic women today. Today, I had the honor of sitting down with Melissa Overmyer. She's a fellow natural born worrier, so I loved sitting down with her and talking through big and small things that have been causes of worry in her own life - everything from studying for tests to losing her family home in a fire - and getting really practical with her on how we can move away from this state of being worried and really enter into wonder at who God is and the way that he has worked and continues to work in our lives as his daughters. If you're a worrier as you're ready to grow in your capacity to wonder at who God is and what his plans are for your life, sister, this letter is for you. Topics we talked about in this episode: What inspired Melissa to write her new book, “Worry to Wonder: A Catholic Guide to Finding Peace Through Scripture” What incredibly hard moments (like losing her home to a fire and her daughter's surfing accident) taught Melissa about worry, trust, and praise How natural born worriers can choose to trust in God Melissa's favorite Scripture passages that she recommends meditating on when you're overwhelmed with worry Replacing lies in your life with truth about who God is Discovering the roots of negative self-talk in your life How Melissa is living the feminine genius in the present moment Resources you should check out after listening to this episode: “From Worry to Wonder,” Melissa's new book (use the code LTW20 for 20% off either the print book or ebook!)
