Episode 306 -- Dan Elliott on Growing Pains, the 1988 Winston Cup Championship and a Tragic Day in Atlanta

The Scene Vault Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 31, 2024 104:12

This week in the final part of our interview, Dan Elliott talks about winning the 1988 Winston Cup championship despite tensions in the shop, the impact Mike Rich's tragic passing had on his over-the-wall career and what amounted to the Taylor family packing up and moving out of Mayberry.   We then tackle the February 28, 1991 issue of Winston Cup Scene.   Dale Earnhardt and Ricky Rudd race for the win on the last lap at Richmond and they do NOT take each other out. That's news in and of itself.    Mark Martin comes back from multiple laps twice to finish sixth, but in the fog that was early 1991 for Roush Racing, Jack Roush is not happy with Mark's effort.   King Racing fabricator Jim Callard throws a little bit of shade at racing mechanics. Dan Elliott announces that he's no longer going to going over the wall on pit stops, due in no small part to a tragic accident at Atlanta just a few months earlier.   It LITERALLY pay Morgan Shepherd to be nice. And … last … but FAR from least … you could say that this issue had some REACTION to the pit road rules that were in effect for the Daytona 500.   NOTE: This show is not associated in any way with American City Business Journals, owner of the Scene brand.   Be sure to check out the latest and greatest stories from the world of NASCAR at dailydownforce.com! In the first of what will be three installments of our conversation, Harold Holly talks about the impact of hanging out with his PeeWee football coach … and more importantly … that coach's race car. Harold breaks into the sport with fellow Alabama native Mickey Gibbs. A break from the sport doesn't last very long, and Harold winds up doing math on the run for the late, great Alan Kulwicki before going to work for Bahari Racing and driver Michael Waltrip. And Harold was RIGHT THERE as Michael endured a REALLY tough month in the spring of 1990. We then tear into the October 11, 1990 issue of Winston Cup Scene. Davey Allison isn't quite sure how many laps are left at Charlotte … but goes on to win anyway. Bill Elliott is dominant but falls by the wayside due to a tire issue. Richard Childress Racing crew members escape injury on pit road … and then take matters into their own hands when a tire falls off Dale Earnhardt's RCR Chevrolet. Mark Martin gains SOME ground on Dale in the Winston Cup standings … but he could have gained a WHOLE lot more. Morgan Shepherd and Michael Waltrip get hosed out of full-page sidebars and Ricky Rudd REALLY gets hosed in the Charlotte Observer. 1980's: Darrell Waltrip Dominates Bristol, Wins 7 Straight Food City 500's - Story Time with Tom Taylor

Bristol Motor Speedway Radio

In the history of Bristol Motor Speedway, one name stands out from all the rest – Darrell Waltrip. The man they called “Jaws” set the standard at Bristol, winning twelve NASCAR Cup Series races in the 1970s, 1980s and the 1990s. But nowhere was Waltrip’s dominance more pronounced than during the early 1980s when he won seven straight races, including four consecutive Food City 500s. 1981 marked a new era for NASCAR, which ordered teams to build smaller cars with a shorter wheelbase and less rear spoiler. The old master Junior Johnson was among the first to figure out how to make the cars handle and his new driver -- Owensboro Kentucky’s Darrell Waltrip – was already on a hot streak winning two of the year’s first four races. The team rolled into Bristol that March and set a new track record of 112 miles per hour during qualifying. On race day, DW led 334 laps, including the final eighty. Ricky Rudd, Bobby Allison, and Morgan Shepherd chased him to the checkered flag. The next spring Darrell had his hands full with Dale Earnhardt but he and Junior still led the last 103 laps to earn the win. 1983? Yep, DW did it again. The spring race was run on a May Saturday night but that never phased DW. He qualified thirteenth and needed the first half of the race to get to the front but once he was there, Darrell turned out the lights on the competition. How dominant was he? Even fans who liked him started wearing “Anybody but Waltrip” T-shirts! In the spring of 1984, it appeared the win streak would end. Bobby Allison had the fastest car and led the most laps but when he went to the pits with mechanical trouble, it was win number seven for old Number 11. DW scored seven wins in a row en route to Bristol immortality. --------------------- Thank you for listening to Bristol Radio! Inside Victory Lane - The Daytona 500 Podcast

The 1994 Daytona 500, the 36th running of the event, was held February 20 at Daytona International Speedway, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Loy Allen Jr., ARCA graduate and Winston Cup rookie, driving the No. 19 for Tri-Star Motorsports, won the pole. Speedweeks 1994 was marked by tragedy when two drivers, Neil Bonnett and Rodney Orr, were killed in separate practice accidents for this race. Sterling Marlin in the Morgan-McClure Motorsports No. 4 won the race, the first career win of his NASCAR career. The yellow flag was displayed with 60 laps to go when Morgan Shepherd spun, which made for interesting fuel mileage strategy. Earnhardt, Irvan, and Mark Martin came into the pits again for extra fuel. 1990 winner Derrike Cope led the field at the restart, only to be passed by Marlin and Irvan a couple of laps later. Irvan took the lead with 43 laps to go, but on Lap 180 he suddenly got loose in Turn 4. He recovered the car, but Marlin retook the lead as Irvan fell back to 7th. With 12 laps to go, Irvan was repassed by Martin, whom he had passed a few laps before, but with eight laps to go the Ford duo tag-teamed Jeff Gordon for 3rd and 4th. The two Fords swapped positions with five laps to go, and Irvan passed Terry Labonte (who was hung up behind Jimmy Hensley) in the tri-oval with three laps to go. But Sterling Marlin's Morgan-McClure Chevrolet was untouchable, and he finally won a Winston Cup race in his 279th start after eight second-place finishes. He broke Dave Marcis' previous record for most starts before his first Cup win (227th start, at Martinsville in 1975). Martin ran out of fuel with two to go, but he managed to take the white flag to complete 199 laps.

Inside Victory Lane - The Daytona 500 Podcast

The 1993 Daytona 500, the 35th running of the event, was held February 14 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida as the first race of the 1993 NASCAR Winston Cup season. Dale Jarrett won the race. Dale Earnhardt was the leader on Lap 130 when Wally Dallenbach Jr. brushed the Turn 4 wall. Sterling Marlin and Michael Waltrip were lined up behind him, and when Marlin backed off, Waltrip tagged him and sent him into a spin. Marlin caught air as he spun by Joe Ruttman, who was coming to pit road to retire with engine failure. 5 laps after the restart, Rick Wilson and Bobby Hamilton collided on the backstretch. Approaching 50 laps to go, 1991 Daytona 500 winner Ernie Irvan was turned into the wall exiting Turn 2, eliminating a possible winner. The first major wreck happened when Dale Earnhardt touched 1992 Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. (competing in his only Winston Cup Series race). His #46 Chevrolet crashed into the 90 of Bobby Hillin Jr., who spun into the path of polesitter Kyle Petty. Both had a heated verbal exchange, Hillin reportedly was telling Petty he had no brakes, but both were victims of circumstances. With 31 laps to go, Derrike Cope and Waltrip touched in Turn 2. Waltrip spun down into 1989 Winston Cup Champion Rusty Wallace and sent him into a horrific series of barrel rolls in the grass. A little more than minute later, Ken Squier reported that Wallace came on the radio to crew chief Buddy Parrott and said, "I'm okay." By this time, Hut Stricklin and Sterling Marlin presented themselves as contenders. Earnhardt led from the restart, only to be passed briefly by Dale Jarrett. The #3 was soon in the lead again, as he was pursued by the Chevrolets of Jarrett and Jeff Gordon, and the Fords of 1986 Daytona 500 winner Geoff Bodine, Hut Stricklin, Mark Martin, and Morgan Shepherd. The "Dale and Dale Show" commenced as Jarrett passed Earnhardt in the tri-oval as they took the white flag. As the leaders exited Turn 2, the CBS Sports producers told Ken Squier and Neil Bonnett through their headsets to let Ned Jarrett to "call his son Dale home". In response, Jarrett called the finish thus: "Come on, Dale! Go, buddy, go! All right, come on! I know he's got it to the floorboard; he can't do anymore! Come on! Take 'er to the inside! Don't let 'em get on the inside of you comin' around this turn! Here he comes, Earnhardt; it's the "Dale and Dale Show" as we come off Turn 4! You know who I'm pulling for, it's Dale Jarrett. Bring her to the inside, Dale! Don't let him get down there! He's gonna make it! Dale Jarrett's gonna win the Daytona 500!!!" The next weekend at Rockingham, Ned reportedly apologized to Earnhardt for his obvious show of bias, to which an understanding Earnhardt replied, "I'm a daddy too."

NASCAR icon Morgan Shepherd is a very special guest joining Trackside Tonite for this show. Morgan has been a NASCAR Nextel Cup driver since 1977. He has also raced in the Busch, and Craftsman Truck Series. He is a born again Christian who serves as a lay minister to the racing community. Shepherd became the second-oldest race winner (after Harry Gant) in 1993, when he won the spring race at Atlanta at the age of 51 years, 4 months, and 27 days. This interview was one of the most memorable of host Randy Dye's 12 year radio career.
