Maya de Vitry is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in Nashville, TN. She grew up in a musical family in Lancaster, PA, playing in creeks and forests, surrounded by fields of cows, corn, and soybeans. She took piano lessons from her grandmother, studied classical violin in school, and learned old-time fiddle tunes and bluegrass songs at campfires and festival campgrounds with her family. Maya first traveled as a fiddling street musician, but quickly fell in love with the craft of songwriting and picked up the guitar and the clawhammer banjo. She spent seven formative years performing in bars, theaters, and on festival stages as a founding member of The Stray Birds, a hard-touring acoustic string band known for passionate live performances and stirring vocal harmonies. When the band parted ways in 2018, Maya began devotedly creating a powerful new body of work as a solo artist. Maya's music unabashedly blurs genre, weaving country, folk, rock, and pop elements through her vibrant storytelling and her extraordinarily dynamic singing. Whether she is playing with her electric band in a bar or sharing a song on acoustic guitar at a folk festival, there is an emotional immediacy and a striking magnetism in Maya's music. She has been invited to support a variety of tours - she has warmed up stages for innovative singer-songwriters like John Craigie and Aoife O'Donovan, and bands like Mighty Poplar and The Wood Brothers. In addition to performing and recording, Maya is a sought-after co-writer and co-creator, and has been steadily and closely collaborating within her chosen musical community of Nashville, Tennessee for nearly a decade.
In this week's episode of Business of Motorsports, Kelley Earnhardt Miller sits down with Jon Wood, President and Co-Owner of Wood Brothers Racing, for an insightful conversation. Jon reflects on his journey within the family business, discussing the pressures he's faced, the challenges he's overcome, and the lessons learned along the way. Explore the inner workings of one of NASCAR's most iconic teams as Jon shares the complexities of managing day-to-day operations and navigating the unique dynamics of a family-run organization. From balancing sibling and parent-child relationships to forging partnerships with industry leaders like Ford and Penske, Jon highlights how these connections have been pivotal to the Wood Brothers' long-standing success. Jon adds an engaging twist by shifting the focus to Kelley, asking for her perspective on managing JR Motorsports alongside Dale Jr., and she shares her insights into the family dynamics of leading the organization. This episode delivers a thoughtful look at the intersection of business, family, and motorsports—don't miss it!
Jano Rix is a drummer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer who has been the third member of The Wood Brothers for over a decade. He started as a hard core jazz pianist, earning a degree from the University of Miami and playing experimental jazz on the New York scene, but he gravitated back to the drums, his dad's instrument, and steered his path back to other styles of music. The Wood Brothers are currently on tour and in the process of recording their next album. In this episode, Jano talks about: How recording to tape changes not just the result, but the entire experiencing of playing and listening during the tracking process How playing keys and drums at the same time brings cool ideas out of both The idea of following flexible time instead of dictating steady time How his jazz education focused too much on the music's theoretical result and not enough on its emotional process. What he took (and left behind) from his jazz days What he learned from his dad Luther Rix about playing with conviction
Steve Poltz is a… a.. what is he? In the man's own words, “I'm just a weirdo, a freak, a bon vivant, a rounder, a rabble rouser, a workaholic, a people pleaser, an idiot and a grateful kid who ran away and joined the circus.”Most of us know Poltz as one of the most charismatic live folksingers working today. Whether he's playing little club in Halifax, or trading verses with Jewel (whose hit song “You Were Made for Me” he co-wrote), or serenading Cayamo, Poltz is Poltz, full on and no exceptions. Hence the the superlative, announced each night, by the man himself:“This is the Greatest Show of My Life!”I shared a show with him once. Unsurprisingly, it was the same night I met Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. We became friends. Weird things happen when Poltz is around.Besides Jewel, the East Nashville-based folksinger has cuts with dozens of artists — Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, Deer Tick, Sierra Hull, Nicki Bluhm among them — as well as a collaboration with the Wood Brothers on his critically-acclaimed record Stardust and Satellites. We talk about early years in the California folk rock scene. Hilarity ensues. Steve recounts what a typical show at the Belly Up was like during the Rugburns' heyday. Destroying stuff, making memories for everyone in the house except himself, since he was wasted. But we also explored more sensitive territory. Steve got clean more than fifteen years ago, after suffering a stroke onstage. We talk alot about that time, the before and after. I asked him how his motivations changed when he got clean. His answer is worth the listen alone. One thing about Steve Poltz is that he is better than just about anybody I know at making a person feel like he's the center of the world. Time and again in this interview a few minutes would pass before I'd realize he was interviewing me.Somewhere in there we played a song together, Steve's song Conveyor Belt. Steve played and sang and I did a harmony and even finagled a little solo into the deal. A sweet moment captured in the studio. This interview was the most fun I've had on the Morse Code Podcast so far. I hope you enjoy it. This week in the first installment of our interview, Gary DeHart remembers getting his start in drag racing and his entrance into NASCAR with team owner Billy Hagan and driver Terry Labonte. The team's money issues forced Gary to work two jobs in order for him to be able to pay the bills. He eventually left the team when a request for a raise was turned down, but not before winning the 1984 Winston Cup championship. We then dig into the November 29, 1984 issue of Grand National Scene. Geoff Bodine takes advantage of Bobby Allison's late-race flat tire to win the rain-soaked season finale at Riverside, while Terry Labonte overcomes Harry Gant in the battle for the 1984 Winston Cup championship. Rusty Wallace wins freshman honors, despite enduring a difficult season with team owner Cliff Stewart. Bobby Rahal makes his one and only Winston Cup start for the Wood Brothers. Darrell Waltrip talks about safety in the wake of a fatal accident the week before at Atlanta, and also discusses rumors that he might buy into Junior Johnson & Associates. And Steve Waid has a column for the ages. IMPORTANT NOTE: We're not going to be asking for any support this week for the podcast or YouTube channel. t would be FAR more appropriate to recommend that you make whatever donations you can to your charity of choice to help out in and around western North Carolina. Grip Strip Podcast Episode 234 – Flipping The Script This episode covers recent races in NASCAR's Cup and Xfinity series at Daytona, along with the Truck series at Milwaukee Mile. Harrison Burton celebrated his first-ever Cup win, making it a special moment for the Wood Brothers, as it marks their 100th victory. He managed a last-minute pass on Kyle Busch, which secured him a spot in the playoffs. We discuss some key moments from the races, including multiple cars flipping over, and how NASCAR seems to struggle with handling such incidents. There's also a brief recap of what happened at Michigan International Speedway and updates on points as we head to Darlington. In the Xfinity series, Ryan Truex scored his second win of 2024 while driving for Toyota. We're still piecing together exactly what happened during that race. In the Truck series, Layne Riggs finally claimed his first victory, though he dislocated his shoulder in the celebration, which his father, Scott, witnessed live. Early leaders included Eckes, Majeski, and Heim before Riggs took the lead. We also look at the points heading to Bristol for the second playoff race in the round of 8. Moving on to IndyCar, the last week featured races in Portland and Gateway. Penske Racing was on fire with Josef Newgarden winning at Gateway and Will Power succeeding in Portland. Alex Palou continued to show consistency, while Scott McLaughlin had a more challenging race. We provide updates on other key players and points as we go into Milwaukee for a doubleheader. In Formula 1 news, Lando Norris struggled at the start once again but ultimately celebrated a win, marking McLaren's rise above Red Bull and Aston Martin. Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium, but Carlos Sainz had a tough weekend. Mercedes faced some difficulties, with George Russell dropping out of contention and Lewis Hamilton receiving a questionable penalty yet recovering to finish eighth. Questions loom around Logan Sargeant's future in F1 and who might step in next, along with updates as we head to Monza. In our GSP Roundup, we highlight the F2 and F1 Academy races at Zandvoort last week, with the F2 and F3 season finale coming up at Monza this week. There was also IMSA GT racing at VIR last week and WEC action at Circuit of the Americas this week. Indy NXT was in Portland last week and will be in Milwaukee this week. MotoGP and Moto2 raced at Aragon, while NHRA took part in the US Nationals. Looking ahead, we preview the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix and make our picks for the races. We also preview the IndyCar doubleheader at Milwaukee Mile, along with picks for the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity races at Darlington, discussing who might secure spots in the Cup playoffs. Finally, we wrap up the show with Josh's Sim Segment before closing out the episode.

Denny Hamlin is back after a rough couple of days on and off the track. On Thursday, the No. 11 team was given an L2 penalty for an engine-rule violation. Denny explains what happened at TRD that caused NASCAR to punish him. He also talks about the impact this will have during the Playoffs. On Saturday, things got worse when he was involved in a massive wreck that ended his race. Denny watched the rest of the race from his bus, where he saw Harrison Burton get the win and punch his Playoff ticket. Denny and Jared also discuss if Christopher Bell should have jumped to the outside lane and moved in front of Burton before Burton made his last push. After a crazy wreck last week, NASCAR made a slight change to the cars to try and prevent them from going airborne. On Saturday, we saw Michael McDowell come off the ground without flipping over. But then, Josh Berry flipped onto his roof before hitting the wall. While both wrecks looked bad, Denny still isn't worried about cars coming off the ground. The guys also talk about the massive implications that come from Burton winning on Saturday. For Wood Brothers Racing, it was a big financial win. On the flipside, drivers on the bubble lost one more available playoff spot with only one race in the regular season left. Burton was 34th in points coming into Saturday and with him winning, the Playoff format is once again coming into question. One of those drivers who might miss the Playoffs now is 23XI's Bubba Wallace. Denny chats about his driver's situation. Off the track, Trackhouse made big news announcing that they acquired a third charter for SVG. The guys chat about SVG's future and Zane Smith losing his ride for next year. For more Actions Detrimental content, head to our YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@ActionsDetrimentalFanDuel disclaimer: 1+ and present in North Carolina. Dale Earnhardt Jr. welcomes longtime NASCAR competitors Elliott and Hermie Sadler to the studio on this episode of the Dale Jr. Download. After growing up in Emporia, Virginia, the accomplished brother duo picked up their father's interest in racing and entered into the go-kart ranks. They explain that their father owned dirt cars that competed on the short tracks of Virginia and North Carolina and was maintained in their family owned Chevy dealership. Hermie would win a World Karting Association national championship for dirt karts in 1988 and would graduate to late model stock cars with the support of his parents. Hermie explains that after initially struggling, his father tried to convince him to give up his racing career in pursuit or something new. In what was supposed to be one last attempt behind the wheel, Hermie would win his first ever late model race in Manassas, inspiring him to continue onward. When Hermie graduated into the NASCAR Busch Series and found early success by winning his first race and the Rookie of the Year title in 1993, Elliott followed him up the racing ladder, occupying the now vacant family late model seat. Elliott would keep the Sadler name in victory lane by winning the 1995 track championship at South Boston before making a splash in the NASCAR Busch ranks himself. Elliott tells the story of getting a call from the Wood Brothers to drive the famed 21 NASCAR Cup ride and how he scored an emotional victory for the team at Bristol. Meanwhile, Hermie struggled on his path through NASCAR and would eventually settle into the broadcast booth where he became one of the most known on-air personalities in the sport. Elliott takes listeners through his journey from Yates Racing to Evernham Motorsports before moving back to the NASCAR Xfinity ranks, where he'd finish up his career at JR Motorsports.
