What the Lord see's in his children. Beautiful, in Him we are. A tribute to my mother's life. The dates are quite significant and amazing.
Everything happens for a reason. As cliché as the statement is, this is our guest's life mantra. This is his trademark which sets him apart – to embrace failure as it comes and learn from it. Our guest for this episode is the founder of #BeTheChange, an entrepreneur and motivational speaker, Anthony Russo. Anthony's strategy and coaching style stemmed from his experience growing up with his compulsive gambler dad and eventually, at one point, his addiction to gambling as well. Hitting rock bottom saved him and his mother's life. He flipped the script and applied it to win in business and life. Discovering the Double Down Strategy [2:54] “It takes a lot of failure to realize that you are so good at failure.” The Negative Progression Strategy [6:50] “I never made the same mistake twice.” My Failure Gave My Mom a Renewed Purpose [16:44] “If that business was successful at that point, I might have a successful business and no mother.” Bouncing Back [27:36] “Find a happy medium until you go all in.” Financial Rock Bottom and the Light [32:55] “Nobody gets lucky.” Anthony's Relationship [44:48] “Be willing to take the world as it comes.” Happiness does not equate wealth [46:24] “I need much less.” #BeTheChange [49:45] “We have a potential to create change in the social media.” Therapy [53:43] “The most important person in therapy is not the therapist.” Awareness [1:02:00] “Stop talking about what you know and start what you can do to get there.” Anthony speaks and coaches from experience and as an expert on the topic of failure to triumph. His own experience of failure could not have made sense during that moment but in hindsight, it was a blessing in disguise as it resulted in keeping his mother. Are you afraid of failing? Then think again. It also means you are afraid to succeed. Now, go and do something. Everything will make sense someday. In this episode we share a practical tactic that you can use when making the case for life. It is called the S.L.E.D. test, and it helps us to determine that the unborn is a human being, and as such no one has the right to abort the unborn. We also discuss how to respond to the issues of Rape, Incest, and the Risk of the Mother's Life in regards to the abortion debate.
Mark spends an Hour with Diana Silva a.k.a. Molé Moma and explores her remarkable journey during the last days of her mothers life.
In 2000, at the age of 40, Marina Gelman lost her college-aged daughter in a tragic car accident. At the time, Gelman was a new fitness enthusiast and avid runner. Overcome by grief after the accident, however, she holed herself up for almost two years and focused only on work to numb the pain. Unfortunately, during this time, she abandoned her fitness goals, started smoking again after a long hiatus, and put on weight; reaching over 200 pounds. Ironically, it was another tragedy a short time later, the death of her Father from a heart attack, that inspired her to start training again. As it turns out, training non-stop turned out to be a blessing and a curse. Yes, she lost weight and found relief from her stress and heartache, but she was also overtraining…severely. Marina eventually succumbed to the devastating effects of chronic fatigue. Even the simple act of walking up a flight of stairs became unbearable. In 2012, after hearing about Matt Dixon and Purple Patch from her running club, she reached out. At the time, she was 240 pounds, her heaviest. She explained to Matt that she had only two small goals: Recover from her chronic fatigue Run three miles again. That’s it. Matt set her sights higher. Not only did he give her hope, but he also gave her a long-term structured plan and a wonderful community of support. Today, Marina Gelman is a Half-Ironman finisher, with her hopes set on finishing a full Ironman in the near future. She has also lost 105 pounds and trains daily, fully recovered from chronic fatigue. This is a story of hope and promise. Adopting an athletic mindset, regardless of where you find yourself, just may be the one spark to save your life. “Losing a child is something unimaginable to go through,” says Marina. “Sport, in a way, and running saved me from sadness for the rest of my life.” Attention Purple Patch Athletes and Fans: We are so excited to offer our new kits with our brand new logo! When I think of the women who taught me the lessons for success, the first one at the top of the list is my own Mom. Mom wouldn’t consider herself a “wild feminist,” but she did do amazing things within male-dominated industries that paved the way for many women to come. Instead of seeing setbacks because of her gender as unfair obstacles, Mom simply worked harder to reach her dreams. In a time when it was weird to educate women just as we do men, Mom pushed to have every opportunity. Mom’s biggest advice to my daughter, and to daughters everywhere, is to keep challenging yourself. Do the hard thing. There are still industries out there where women are the exception to the rule. We have a place and we have a voice in those industries! Push yourself towards your passion, and life will always be satisfying. I cannot wait for you to hear the story of my incredible mother’s life. She is an inspiration to me and will be an inspiration to daughters everywhere. Thanks for joining us today! More moments in this episode: My mom’s love of education was fostered by her own father. Most women went to college to get a “MRS Degree,” but mom got her degree in Chemistry and Math, and a Masters in Cardiovascular Pharmacology. Getting and MD was a way for my mother to help people. Mom didn’t have traditional female role models. Mom definitely had setbacks due to her gender when applying for medical school. Keep working and challenging yourself. The message my mom would send to my daughter. How to fight back against the 10 year rut. Advice for young women who are facing setbacks because they are a woman. In this episode of the Equipped for Life Course Podcast, Josh, Tim, and Rachel share how they respond to pro-choice students who ask about life-threatening pregnancies. They also talk through some of the more difficult philosophical issues that sometimes come up when discussing this. In this clip, Rachel shares a sound bite to help you respond to this question, and the team discusses how to begin a response. Today we are beginning a new series on life and death, in which we’ll consider abortion, suicide, euthanasia, and capital punishment. Classical pianist Mona Golabek is a winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant. She is also now a stage performer, telling the story of her mother’s life in the one-woman show The Pianist of Willesden Lane, now playing at 59E59 Theaters. Golabek’s mother, Lisa Jura, was one of the children sent from Nazi-occupied Europe to England on what is known as the Kindertransport. Although Golabek is the only person on stage, she has an ally to help tell her mother’s story: a grand piano, which Golabek plays throughout the show. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood offers a review of The Pianist of Willesden Lane, adapted and directed by Hershey Felder.
I spoke last month at the Students for Life of America Regional Leadership Summit at UCLA. I spent the first 54-minutes speaking about bodily rights arguments, and you can download that audio here. I spent the last 24-minutes talking about life-threatening pregnancies and taking questions. My thinking on this subject is heavily influenced by my friend Trent Horn at Catholic Answers. Trent has done a lot of research and great thinking on this subject, and the material I presented is largely based on what Trent has written on the subject that I subsequently agreed with. After arguing that we should treat both mother and child as patients and that in late-term situations, we can usually save both, I explain that there are still some cases where we cannot save both, particularly in tubal pregnancies. I respond to the concern that tubal pregnancies aren't really that risky, and offer a real-world example when it was also justified to put an innocent human being's life in perilous risk.
Who can measure the value and power of a mother’s influence? For good or bad, nothing can compare to the influence that a mother has on her children. The bible says that a wise woman builds up her home. On this Mother’s Day 2011, Bro. Hughes uses this scripture in Proverbs to describe the light of a mother’s life.
