In this episode we are joined by Emmaia Gelman, author of The Anti-Defamation League and the Racial State, a critical history of the ADL as a Cold War neoconservative institution. Gelman excavates the Anti-Defamation League's origins as a white, settler colonial institution founded by German-Jewish elites—not to combat antisemitism broadly, but to manage class respectability and suppress Eastern European Jewish immigrant socialists whom they viewed as a racial and social threat. Gelman looks back at how early Jewish settlers had built fortunes through participation in 19th-century US territorial expansion, Indigenous dispossession, and slavery's economic system, understanding themselves as white Europeans racially distinct from the "vermin" arriving from the Pale of Settlement. The ADL and its predecessor, the American Jewish Committee (founded 1906), operated as Progressive Era eugenicist charities designed to "correct and fix" rather than support self-determination, preemptively capturing Jewish political identity to prevent autonomous radical organizing. Gelman traces how the ADL evolved from an instrument of McCarthyite purges—coordinating mass firings of Jewish leftists in 1951, offering its services to McCarthy committee members, and abandoning Julius and Ethel Rosenberg to execution while denying antisemitism played any role in their prosecution (the judge who sentenced them sat on the ADL's Civil Rights Committee)—into a key architect of Cold War anti-communism and neoconservative "democracy promotion." The organization attacked Arab League representatives speaking about Zionist violence in Palestine as early as 1946, treating Palestinian and Arab organizing as "foreign insurgency" while framing Jewish fundraising for Israeli settlement as natural civic participation. After Israel's 1967 military victory, the ADL strategically re-racialized Jews as non-white within the framework of race liberalism, allowing it to cast Israeli militarism as defensive racial liberation and Arab calls for refugee return as antisemitic rather than anti-colonial. This racial pivot occurred precisely as European Jews had achieved economic whiteness through the GI Bill, suburbanization, and the collapse of university quotas—benefits systematically denied to Black populations through redlining. Emmaia Gelman is the author of The Anti-Defamation League and the Racial State, a critical history of the Anti-Defamation League as a Cold War neoconservative institution (UC Press, 2026) and co-editor of The Anti-Defamation League: A Critical Reader (Pluto Press, 2026). She co-hosts the podcast Unpacking Zionism. Emmaia is co-chair of the American Studies Association Caucus on Academic and Community Activism, and a longtime activist in New York City. She is the founding director of the Institute for the Critical Study of Zionism, which examines the political and ideological work of Zionist institutions in Palestine and transnational contexts. She researches the history of ideas about race, queerness, safety, and rights, and their production as levers in surveillance, "anti-terror", and war. Her teaching spans academic and community spaces. If you like what we do and want to support our ability to have more conversations like this. Please consider becoming a Patron. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) started as a civil rights organization for Jewish people in the US. It's now a pro-Israel group that spies on Leftist organizations and defends Elon Musk when he does a white power salute. Emmaia Gelman's new book The Anti-Defamation League and the Racial State details the history of the Zionist group that influences everything from the history written into American textbooks, to the way headlines are written in mainstream news. Next, Mama Ganuush returns to discuss two gay Zionists running for election in the Bay who have helped manufacture consent for genocide in Palestine who you will know well if you're a regular listener, Manny Yekutiel and Scott Wiener. In this episode of Retail War Games, I sit down with Terri Gelman, the CEO and Founder of E&T Horizons (DecoTeak). Terri has spent over 15 years building a successful, digitally native brand rooted in quality, sustainability, and intimate global partnerships. We explore Terri's journey from starting with children's furniture to becoming a leader in the premium teak market, serving boutique resorts in the Caribbean and homes across the U.S.. Terri pulls back the curtain on what it really takes to manage a supply chain in Indonesia and Vietnam, why she prioritizes handmade craftsmanship over plastic mass production, and how she navigated the "supply chain mess" of the post-COVID era.
In this episode, Travis sits down with Mesh Gelman, founder and CEO of Cumulus Coffee Company. With a career spanning entrepreneurship, retail innovation, and leadership at Starbucks—including running retail partnerships and its innovation incubator—Mesh brings decades of experience to the world of coffee. After years of R&D, he launched Cumulus to solve one of the biggest challenges in coffee: delivering high-quality cold brew at home in seconds. His journey blends curiosity, resilience, and a relentless drive to build something truly differentiated. On this episode we talk about: Mesh's unconventional path from teaching to textiles to coffee innovation Lessons learned scaling a retail business and landing major partners like JCPenney What he learned working closely with Starbucks and Howard Schultz The massive shift from hot coffee to cold brew and what it means for the market The 4+ year R&D journey behind building Cumulus Coffee Top 3 Takeaways Curiosity and asking better questions can open more doors than having all the answers. Building your own brand—and owning the customer relationship—is critical for long-term stability. The best innovations often come from solving operational pain points that others overlook. Notable Quotes "The smartest people I knew were asking questions, not just giving answers." "The world will be fine tomorrow without us—we have to earn our business every day." Taboo to Truth: Unapologetic Conversations About Sexuality in Midlife
In this episode, I sit down with pelvic floor physical therapist Dr. Rachel Gelman to uncover the one part of the male body that almost no one talks about — the pelvic floor. From erection strength to ejaculation control and orgasm intensity, Rachel breaks down exactly how these muscles work in men and women alike, why most people are walking around with a pelvic floor that's too tense (not too weak), and why Kegels may be the most over-prescribed exercise in sexual health. We also get into male incontinence, what a pelvic floor internal exam actually looks like, how consent is handled in the clinical setting, and why trauma plays a bigger role in pelvic floor treatment than most people realize. This is Part 1 — and trust me, you don't want to miss Part 2.In this episode:00:00 - Podcast Intro & Show Hook00:30 - Welcome & Karen's Introduction01:15 - Meet Dr. Rachel Gelman – Pelvic Floor PT02:40 - Women Are Learning About Pelvic Floor PT — But What About Men?03:45 - Half of Rachel's Patients Are Men04:30 - The Pelvic Floor Is Gender Neutral05:15 - Pregnancy & the Pelvic Floor — The Common Misconception06:10 - How the Pelvic Floor Works: The Muscular Hammock Explained07:50 - Sexual Function & the Pelvic Floor (For All Genders)09:30 - Karen's Tight Pelvic Floor — And Why Kegels Were Wrong for Her10:40 - Why Most People Have a Tense, Not Weak, Pelvic Floor12:00 - The Kegel Myth & Over-Prescription12:45 - Pelvic Floor Machines: Do They Help or Hurt?13:30 - Male Incontinence — How It Works & What Causes It15:10 - Prostate Surgery & Its Impact on the Pelvic Floor15:50 - The Internal Exam — Consent, Comfort & What to Expect16:55 - Trauma, Body Language & Knowing When NOT to Proceed17:25 - Wrap-Up, Part 2 Teaser & Outro Want a deeper look? The field is set. 27 candidates — the most ever by far — filed to run for Nevada's 2nd congressional district after the sudden retirement announcement from Republican Rep. Mark Amodei. With no incumbent running and a potentially bluer national landscape, some political insiders believe a Democrat could flip the seat for the first time ever. Is that a reality? Who are the top contenders on both sides? This week on the Ballot Battleground: Nevada podcast, host Ben Margiott speaks with UNR political science professor Jeremy Gelman about the partisan makeup of CD2, its deep red history, the possibility of a flip and the type of candidate who might have a realistic shot. Welcome to the Purple Patch Podcast! On the episode IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon welcomes guest and Purple Patch Athlete Marina Gelman. In 2000, at the age of 40, Marina Gelman lost her college-aged daughter in a tragic car accident. At the time, Gelman was a new fitness enthusiast and avid runner. Overcome by grief after the accident, however, she holed herself up for almost two years and focused only on work to numb the pain. Unfortunately, during this time, she abandoned her fitness goals, started smoking again after a long hiatus, and put on weight; reaching over 200 pounds. Ironically, it was another tragedy a short time later, the death of her Father from a heart attack, that inspired her to start training again. As it turns out, training non-stop turned out to be a blessing and a curse. Yes, she lost weight and found relief from her stress and heartache, but she was also overtraining…severely. Marina eventually succumbed to the devastating effects of chronic fatigue. Even the simple act of walking up a flight of stairs became unbearable. In 2012, after hearing about Matt Dixon and Purple Patch from her running club, she reached out. At the time, she was 240 pounds, her heaviest. She explained to Matt that she had only two small goals: Recover from her chronic fatigue Run three miles again. That's it. Matt set her sights higher. Not only did he give her hope, but he also gave her a long-term structured plan and a wonderful community of support. Today, Marina Gelman is a Half-Ironman finisher, with her hopes set on finishing a full Ironman in the near future. She has also lost 105 pounds and trains daily, fully recovered from chronic fatigue. This is a story of hope and promise. Adopting an athletic mindset, regardless of where you find yourself, just may be the one spark to save your life. “Losing a child is something unimaginable to go through,” says Marina. “Sport, in a way, and running saved me from sadness for the rest of my life.” If you have any questions about the Purple Patch program, feel free to reach out at info@purplepatchfitness.com Purple Patch and Episode Resources Check out our world-class coaching and training options: Book a complementary needs assessment coaching call: https://calendly.com/coaches-purplepatch/offseason-assessment-call Tri Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/squad 1:1 Coaching: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/11-coached Run Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness/com/run-squad Strength Squad: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/strength-1 Live & On-Demand Bike Sessions: https://www.purplepatchfitness.com/bike Explore our training options in detail: https://bit.ly/3XBo1Pi Live in San Francisco? In this episode of the MedTech Impact Podcast, Charles Gellman, CEO and Co-Founder of HiDo Health, discusses the company's mission to eliminate medication errors in the home. Gelman introduces their AI robotic caregiver, a system designed to ensure patients take the right medication at the right time. Unlike existing medication adherence solutions that rely on patient self-reporting or simple reminders, HiDo Health's technology automates the process, knows the medication name, dosage, frequency, and count, and even records consumption. This approach aims to stabilize chronic disease, reduce hospitalizations, and improve the overall quality of care.Charles emphasizes that the device was designed with significant patient input, focusing on accountability and caregiver needs. The system uses existing pill bottles with a special cap containing an RFID chip, and incorporates face ID and video recording to confirm medication intake. This technology integrates data for both patients and providers, and early results show a substantial reduction in hospitalizations and cost savings. HiDo Health is partnering directly with payers to get the device to patients, and is focused on expanding awareness of the technology, so be sure to tune in, so you can be informed and inspired.

Juror Turned Defender: A Karen Read Plot Twist No One Saw Coming A fired state trooper. A hung jury. And now, a juror turned defense attorney. The Karen Read case just added another chapter that feels more like an episode of Law & Order than real life. Just days before Karen Read is set to stand trial for the second time, a new name showed up on her defense team roster: Victoria George. She's not just any attorney. She's a Massachusetts lawyer who sat through the first trial as an alternate juror—and walked away so disturbed by what she saw, she switched sides. Literally. George filed her notice of appearance on Wednesday. She's a Princeton grad who earned her law degree from Northeastern in 2020, and according to an interview she did with Vanity Fair, the first trial shook her faith in the Massachusetts justice system. Her words, not mine. "If as a lawyer I was too afraid to stand up for what I believed in, who would?" she said. That's not just courtroom rhetoric—that's a real quote from a lawyer who once sat quietly in the jury box, now sitting beside the defendant. Karen Read, 45, is facing charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a deadly accident after her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe, was found dead in the snow outside a fellow officer's house in January 2022. Prosecutors say Read hit him with her Lexus SUV during a drunken argument and drove away. She says she's being framed—and that the real killer was at the after-party that O'Keefe never made it home from. The first trial ended in a deadlock. A mistrial. Jurors couldn't agree, and frankly, who could blame them? The case was messy, the timeline was fuzzy, and then there was the lead investigator—Michael Proctor. Proctor, a Massachusetts State Trooper at the time, led the investigation against Read. But last week, he was fired. Why? Well, let's just say his texts didn't exactly reflect professionalism. In court, messages were read aloud where Proctor called Read a “wack job,” joked about hoping she'd kill herself, and fantasized about finding nude photos on her phone. You don't need a JD to figure out that's going to be a problem when your job is supposed to be objective law enforcement. George didn't hold back when talking about Proctor's involvement, either. “Based on his own words, he had a pretty strong personal bias against the person in the defendant's chair,” she said. “How do you ever trust the evidence coming from his investigation?” And let's be clear—this isn't some PR stunt from Read's defense team. Legal experts are chiming in, too. David Gelman, a former prosecutor turned defense attorney, said this is the first time he's ever heard of a juror becoming part of the defense in a retrial. And he thinks it bodes well for Read. “Usually retrials don't go well – that's why a hung jury is a win for defendants,” Gelman said. “Since the last case, you have an officer involved who has been terminated for bad conduct, evidence will be suppressed that would benefit the prosecutor, and there is more media attention that makes Read look better. The prosecutor has screwed the pooch.” This time, the case will be prosecuted by Hank Brennan—a special prosecutor with a heavyweight background, best known for defending mobster Whitey Bulger. And that's not the only legal battle Read is facing. O'Keefe's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her as well. But back to George, because that's the wild card here. She wasn't some high-profile hire or flashy courtroom shark. She sat quietly, listened to every word, and when the trial ended in mistrial, she didn't walk away. She switched sides. Karen Read's second trial starts today (Tuesday). And now, the defense team includes someone who not only knows how the first jury thought—but knows how the system works from both sides of the bar. #KarenRead #TrueCrimeUpdate #MichaelProctor #JusticeInQuestion Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? On this week's motivation Monday, we're talking to Michael Gelman. When Michael Gelman helped create one of the most popular New York morning shows in 1987 and orchestrate its transition to a national ratings powerhouse a year later, he became the youngest producer of a national talk show. Today, as executive producer of “Live,” he has the longest tenure at the helm of any of the top syndicated shows. Since its inception “Live” has enlivened morning television with its hilarious Host Chat and A-list celebrity guests. Now in its 35th season in national syndication, “Live” remains a stronghold in daytime television, continuing to entertain viewers nationwide. As executive producer, Gelman is responsible for virtually every aspect of the show. He is well known for his audience warm-ups and regularly appears on-set, complementing the daily Host Chat segment. Gelman first joined “Live” as a freelance production assistant on what was then known as “The Morning Show.” Soon after, he was hired as a staff production assistant and later named associate producer, working in that role for two years. He left the show to pursue freelance opportunities and produced original “Live” host Regis Philbin's highly-rated primetime variety program. “The Regis Philbin Show,” which aired on Lifetime. In 1987, Gelman returned to “The Morning Show” as executive producer. The following year, the show went into national syndication as “Live with Regis & Kathie Lee.” How you can stay in touch with Linda: Website Facebook Twitter Instagram Pinterest YouTube SoundCloud "Proud Sponsors of the Sisterhood of S.W.E.A.T" Essential Formulas

On the evening of March 24, 1990, nearly one hundred patrons gathered to celebrate Carnivale at the Happy Land Social Club, a small informal night club in the Bronx that catered to a mostly Honduran clientele. The evening took a deadly turn when, around 3:30 am, an explosion of fire roared up the stairway leading to the second-floor club, blocking the only exit from the building and trapping the patrons in a room rapidly filling with toxic smoke and fire. It's unknown how many patrons managed to escape the fire, but by the time the fire department had extinguished the blaze, eighty-seven people were dead.Thank you to the amazing Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBarbanel, Josh. 1990.
