When I had a Black producer tell me my sophisticated love story was unrealistic because it didn't include a knife fight, I became very disillusioned. He was a gatekeeper and now I know how he got to a deal at Warner Bros. Our meeting was on that lot. However, it never occurred to me that it wasn't a meritocracy - that successful film careers weren't built solely on talent and lucky breaks.
