She handled all of the household duties (financial, scheduling, child care, cleaning, laundry). She never spoke up or expressed her dissatisfaction because she didn't want to start a fight This went on for months until one day, he came to her and told her he is seeing someone else. The client became angry, lashing out with insults. However, she eventually started begging, pleading and trying to appease her husband. She said she would do “anything” to save the relationship. She even offered to have an “open relationship” if he would just stay. These behaviors only drove the husband further away. In another example, a couple came to therapy together. The wife had “checked out” because her husband was distant and not involved. Just like the previous example, he spent all of his free time playing video games and hanging out with his buddies. He didn't acknowledge his wife emotionally and was not involved with any of the household duties. The wife met someone else and asked the husband for a divorce. He reacted by begging and pleading, stating he would change. This reaction is typical with clients I see. One spouse intends to exit the relationship and the other spouse begins a journey of pleading and begging. The message being sent is “I can't make it without you.” This leads to constant pleading for the partner to come back. Phone calls and texts in a desperate attempt to reconnect. The compulsion to rectify the situation strips the victimized spouse of self-esteem and dignity, causing the victim to grovel and act like a subservient puppy. Compulsions are unwanted actions, or rituals, that a person engages in repeatedly without getting pleasure from them or being able to control them. Bipolar 1; manic episodes that last at least 7 days/depressive episodes that last at least 2 weeks Bipolar II; periods of manic symptoms and depressive symptoms that last at least 2 years Psycho Psychotic disorders are severe mental disorders that cause abnormal thinking and perceptions. Schizophrenia is one type of psychotic disorder. Schizo Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning, and can be disabling. Retard It was previously used as a medical term. The verb "to retard" means to delay or hold back, and so "retard" became known as a medical term in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to describe children with retarded mental development. These words were discontinued in that form when concerns arose that they had developed negative meanings. ADD ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a condition with symptoms such as inattentiveness, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. ADD is a type of ADHD that doesn't involve constant movement and fidgeting. Now it's called ADHD, inattentive type, or ADHD, hyperactive/impulsive type, or ADHD, combined type. Narcissist Narcissistic personality disorder — one of several types of personality disorders — is a mental condition in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others Hypochondriac A hypochondriac is someone who lives with the fear that they have a serious, but undiagnosed medical condition, even though diagnostic tests show there is nothing wrong with them. Nympho Nymphomania is a mental disorder marked by compulsive sexual behavior. Compulsions are unwanted actions, or rituals, that a person engages in repeatedly without getting pleasure from them or being able to control them. Penis Envy Freud also had controversial views on women. He introduced a stage of ‘penis envy’ – where a woman realizes she does not possess a penis, and experiences an envy of the male. Misogynist • Misogyny is typically an unconscious hatred that men form early in life, often as a result of a trauma involving a female figure they trusted. Ellis is considered the originator of cognitive behavior therapy, although he used the term rational emotive therapy, later changing it to rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT). From the late 1940s onwards, Ellis worked on rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) Ellis was now advocating a new more active and directive type of psychotherapy. In 1955, he presented rational therapy (RT). In RT, the therapist sought to help the client understand—and act on the understanding—that his personal philosophy contained beliefs that contributed to his own emotional pain. This new approach stressed actively working to change a client's self-defeating beliefs and behaviors by demonstrating their irrationality, self-defeatism and rigidity. Ellis believed that through rational analysis and cognitive reconstruction, people could understand their self-defeatingness in light of their core irrational beliefs and then develop more rational constructs. Memory Imprinting There are many moments in life when something unexpected occurs. These unexpected events may be unremarkable, tragic or positive. You can imagine that tragic events are often imprinted in memories, especially if an individual is a victim or eyewitness of a tragic event. One of the most severe results of imprinted memories take the form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Falilial Imprinting The best-known form of imprinting is filial imprinting, in which a young animal narrows its social preferences to an object (typically a parent) as a result of exposure to that object Konrad Lorenz working with greylag geese Sexual Imprinting Sexual imprinting is the process by which a young animal learns the characteristics of a desirable mate. For example, male zebra finches appear to prefer mates with the appearance of the female bird that rears them, rather than that of the birth parent when they are different Limbic Imprinting Some suggest that prenatal, perinatal and post-natal experiences leave imprints upon the limbic system, causing lifelong effects and this process is identified as limbic imprinting. The term is also described as the human emotional map, deep-seated beliefs, and values that are stored in the brain's limbic system and govern people's lives at the subconscious level It is one of the suggested explanations for the claim that the experiences of an infant, particularly during the first two years of his life, contribute to his lifelong psychological development.[14] Kids have no fear! If you recall back to your childhood, your curiosity may have allowed you to do things that you wouldn’t think of doing today. As kids, there are fewer self-imposed limits. My sledding daredevil story! Our experiences make our movies. The movie of our life influences every decision we make. Unfortunately, that movie is sometimes inaccurate. The movie replays all of our disappointments, failures and hurt. This prevents us from “letting go” and challenging our status-quo as adults. Your movie will often reinforce limiting beliefs. WINNER OF THE WEEK; Shaq https://www.huffpost.com/entry/shaq-engagement-ring_n_606f14f6c5b6034a708639c9 Best Hypnosis/Meditation Apps 1. Simply Being iOS: $1.99, Rating: 4.5 stars | Android: $1.99, Rating: 4.5 stars Simply Being is a solid, affordable app that features voice-guided meditations as well as relaxing nature sounds. Unlike some of the pricier meditation apps, there isn’t much choice in meditation themes or voices. But the app’s relative simplicity could be a virtue: More elaborate apps can be overwhelming and even distracting. 2. Omvana iOS: free*, Rating: 4.5 stars | Android: free, Rating: 4.5 stars Omvana offers a wider range of guided and music-only options like an iTunes of meditations. It claims to have “the largest library” of guided meditations and self-hypnosis tracks online. While some tracks are available at no cost, most tracks cost a few dollars each. It’s worth noting the self-hypnosis tracks, which claim to help you lose weight, find love, or acquire wealth, are not based on neuroscience and are of dubious value. 3. WhiteNoise iOS: free, Rating: 5.0 stars | Android: free, Rating: 4.5 stars As its name suggests, this app uses white noise to mask distracting sounds during meditation and to promote relaxation. You can also use WhiteNoise to help with sleep. It comes with 40 pre-recorded white noise sounds, such as falling rain, a bubbling brook, or ocean waves. You can loop these samples, or even mix them together to create your own soothing sounds. What’s more, you can record and loop your own favorite sounds. No guided meditations here. 4. Equanimity iOS: $4.99, Rating: 4.0 stars This app could be your favorite if you’re an established meditator looking for a timer you can customize. No guided meditations, no music or nature sounds. Equanimity allows you to set unobtrusive gongs, bells, or chimes to signal the end of your session. The elegant timer shows you how much time is left in your meditation without distracting you. Also included are a meditation journal and a way to log meditations so you can track and monitor your practice. A comparable option for Android is Bodhi Timer. 5. Insight Timer iOS: free*, Rating: 5.0 stars | Android: free*, Rating: 4.5 stars To maximize your options, Insight Timer is a popular choice. It features 3,000 free guided meditations as well as several hundred free music tracks to play while you’re meditating. You can also use a variety of timer options, such as those found in Equanimity and Bodhi Timer. It has a wealth of free content, including guided meditations for sleep, although there are upgrades that require a purchase. If you don’t value music or voice guidance, this app is likely to be overkill for you. 6. Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics by 10% Happier iOS: free*, Rating: 5.0 stars Here’s training for meditation skeptics by meditation a...

All Or Nothing Thinking Perfectionists, like high achievers, tend to set high goals and work hard toward them. However, a high achiever can be satisfied with doing a great job and achieving excellence (or something close), even if their very high goals aren’t completely met. Perfectionists will accept nothing less than perfection. "Almost perfect" is seen as failure. Highly Critical Perfectionists are more critical of themselves and others than high achievers. While high achievers take pride in their accomplishments and tend to be supportive of others, perfectionists tend to spot mistakes and imperfections. They home in on imperfections and have trouble seeing anything else. They’re more judgmental and harder on themselves and on others when "failure" does occur. Pushed By Fear High achievers tend to be pulled toward their goals and by a desire to achieve them. They are happy with any steps made in the right direction. Perfectionists, on the other hand, tend to be pushed toward their goals by a fear of not reaching them and see anything less than a perfectly met goal as a failure. Unrealistic Standards Unfortunately, a perfectionist’s goals aren’t always even reasonable. While high achievers can set their goals high, perhaps enjoying the fun of going a little further once goals are reached, perfectionists often set their initial goals out of reach. Focused on Results High achievers can enjoy the process of chasing a goal as much or more than the actual reaching of the goal itself. Conversely, perfectionists see the goal and nothing else. They’re so concerned about meeting the goal and avoiding the dreaded failure that they can’t enjoy the process of growing and striving. Depressed by Unmet Goals Perfectionists are much less happy and easygoing than high achievers. While high achievers are able to bounce back fairly easily from disappointment, perfectionists tend to beat themselves up much more and wallow in negative feelings when their high expectations go unmet. Fear of Failure Perfectionists are also much more afraid to fail than are high achievers. Because they place so much stock in results and become so disappointed by anything less than perfection, failure becomes a very scary prospect. And, since anything less than perfection is seen as failure, perfectionists sometimes put off things until the last minute. Procrastination It seems paradoxical that perfectionists would be prone to procrastination, as that trait can be detrimental to productivity, but perfectionism and procrastination do tend to go hand in hand. This is because, fearing failure as they do, perfectionists will sometimes worry so much about doing something imperfectly that they become i...

Famous Failures Jon Benjamin wrote a book in 2018 “It’s an assertion that failure is an option and even, at times, a viable prescription for a better life, despite its long-standing stigmatization. Failure can be incredibly freeing and an end in itself, not just that tired platitude that it is a necessary step on the road to success.” Many people suffer from perfectionism. “Refusal to accept any standard short of perfection”. I’ve heard the story so many times through the years …. a husband comes out of the closet, only to send his wife into it. Mixed orientation marriages and relationships are far more common than we realize, but our culture still considers them taboo. One spouse is gay or bisexual, one is heterosexual, and the secret finally is released, only to cause anger, hurt, resentment and a flood of negative emotions. These couples still love each other, which creates even more anxiety and conflict. This truly is a two-person crisis. The wife deserves support, understanding and someone to talk to, but she is so embarrassed and humiliated that she hides from the truth. The husband desperately wants to be set free from his secret, but he doesn’t want to hurt his wife or his family. So, what happens? The couple can split up and lead two separate lives, or they can begin the journey of relationship transformation as they learn how to deal with their new normal and discover what they really want – together or apart. This Smart Sex, Smart Love podcast digs deeper into what is next - and what is best for these couples living in a mixed orientation marriage.
