It's time for a very 80s Christmas as we travel back to revisit the holiday season during the 1980s. In this episode, we look back at the holiday movie that was a surprise hit and then the story of a beloved TV special that didn't come from the 80s--but was adopted as our own. Next, we look back at the creation of a modern classic Christmas song and finish with the unlikely story of a group of children that managed to dethrone John Lennon... So warm up the cider and toss another Yule log on the fire; it's time to travel back to Christmas in the 80s. The Everything 80s Movie Review Podcast: Patreon.com/80s

Christmas, while officially just a one day holiday, often becomes much longer, especially if you have travel to be with friends and relatives. Today, I dive into the topic of holidays and the various traditions that shape our experiences. As we approach Thanksgiving and Christmas, I reflect on how my relationship with these celebrations has evolved over the years, especially in light of personal losses and changes. I share memories of cherished moments spent with my grandmother and the unique traditions we created together, from late-night gift unwrapping to family dinners at Olive Garden. However, I also acknowledge how the absence of loved ones can alter the feeling of these festive times. Ultimately, I encourage everyone to embrace what brings them joy during the holidays, whether that's continuing old traditions or creating new ones, and to remember that it's okay to feel a mix of emotions during this season.Takeaways: Holidays can evoke mixed feelings, reminding us of both joy and loss in life. Creating new traditions can help us adapt and find joy in holiday celebrations. The importance of chosen family can be as significant as blood relatives during holidays. Everyone has different attachments to holidays, shaped by personal experiences and memories. Grief can change how we perceive and celebrate holidays, often leading to new customs. Reflecting on past memories helps us appreciate present experiences, especially during festive times. Today is Christmas. We're in the peak of the American holiday season, which started at Thanksgiving. So, it is with this in mind that I thought I'd take to the streets of Pittsburgh once again and talk to people about their holiday memories. That's what this special holiday edition of the Shaping Opinion podcast is about. This episode was originally released on December 19, 2022. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/324_-_Encore_7_Favorite_Holiday_Memories.mp3 In this episode, we talk about some favorite holiday memories. You'll hear from seven different people, each with their own holiday memories, and there's one thing I can tell you, not one of them will talk about a toy they found under that Christmas tree. Each person has his or her unique and special holiday memories. But as we've found in previous episodes like this, you may hear something of your own holidays in the stories our guests tell. In the end, there is a common thread across every story we hear. To prepare for this episode, I spent the afternoon before Thanksgiving on a bench in the Strip District of Pittsburgh. It was a nice November day in the city. Warm and sunny. People were in a good mood, getting ready for the holiday season once again. The voices you hear are of Elijah, Sara, Katie, Jeremy, Deborah, Gina, and Heather. From the secret language of scent that lures us toward pretzel stands, to the cozy allure of Uggs, we dive into the subliminal messages that guide our gift-buying hands. And of course, there's nothing like the nostalgia of classic Christmas films—we're talking the original 'Grinch'—to really stir up the memories. What truly makes a gift memorable? We're pulling at the ribbons of this question as we chat about the art of thoughtful present-picking. Is it the flash of a spa day or the thrill of a murder mystery game that lingers in the mind? Maybe it's the shared laughter over a skydiving adventure gift. Through personal tales and listener anecdotes, we explore the delicate balance of gifting, evoking those childhood traditions and seeking out experiences that resonate far beyond the unwrapping. As the logs crackle and the eggnog flows, settle in for our festive roundup of entertainment musts. We're cozying up with 'Scavengers Reign' and flipping through the 'Lore Olympus' series, while 'James Bond Agent of Spectra' has us on the edge of our seats. But it's not just about the visuals—join us as we let the spoken word wisdom of Ram Dass wash over us, contemplating the unconditional love this season inspires. Share your own Christmas capers with us on Spotify and let's make this holiday one for the books.
