This episode of The Better Life with Dr Pinkston features Dr Pinkston and Ray Solano from PD Labs, focusing on how to navigate and survive the holidays—dubbed the "Super Bowl of Sugar" (Halloween to Valentine's Day)—without derailing your health goals. The discussion centers on research challenging restrictive dieting, suggesting that unrestricted eating of nutritious food, layered with non-digestible fiber (nuts, seeds, berries) to slow sugar absorption, can offer similar benefits to fasting without the negative effects. Key Takeaways: Mindful Holiday Strategy: The holidays are a time for balance and not gaining weight, rather than focusing intensely on losing it. The Problem with Restriction: Restrictive diets (like extreme keto or carnivore) can backfire psychologically and physically. Research suggests high protein without proper carbohydrates can negatively affect longevity. The "Eat Human" Approach: Focus on a common-sense approach: avoid processed foods, know your intolerances, and aim for a balance of protein, fat, and carbs (suggested ratio: 40% protein, 30% fat, 30% carb) in every meal. Breakfast is Key: Start the day with high protein (40 grams) to stabilize blood sugars, reducing cravings later. Avoid traditional high-carb breakfasts like instant oatmeal. Stay Hydrated & Stress-Free: Managing stress with simple supplements like Magnesium Glycinate and Theanine (or cortisol managers like Triquillata) is crucial, as stress often leads to poor eating choices. Next-Generation Health: Ray Solano introduces PD Labs' work on peptides (like the GLP-1 incretins) and their innovative two-year project to make these high-molecular-weight molecules available transdermally (non-injectable) by Christmas, transforming chronic disease prevention. The conversation emphasizes starting your health recovery journey now, not waiting for a "magical time" in January.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Do the holidays or family/friend gatherings make you anxious? Does your young person exit the room when families gather? Does your spiritual journey make you vulnerable to deep emotionality when family and friends gather on special occasions, holidays and events? Do you notice a shift in your young person during these times?Join this illuminating and practically helpful conversation with Brett Cotter of www.stressisgone.com and www.stressisgone.org on THE SOULFAM PODCAST. Here we navigate intense holiday and special event moments...be it Halloween, a football game, Thanksgiving or any family/friend gathering. Intense emotionality or realizations which are a normal part of your awakening/remembering journey can be surprisingly painful or illuminating. Brett, whose work with individuals, families, first responders and veterans, is transformative for more than two decades shares his methodology for deep connection and understanding of your own memories, emotions, timeline collapse moments that can escalate your sense of anxiousness, anger or sadness. Cotter, who also works closely with families and organizations with regard to suicide and suicide prevention, shares his remedies for quiet yet intensely valuable opportunities to connect with your young person. As we live in a digital age of social media, internet and cell phone relationships, the opportunity for human to human engagement becomes limited and less likely to happen. How easy it is to receive a dopamine hit from texting and scrolling than talking, voicing, experiencing and physically being active whether an adult or young person. Yet the rate of suicide is on the rise for people as young as 12 with October being a typical month of increase. Time and presence is the answer says Cotter. Utilizing open communication through empathic body language...as shared in this conversation....and an interest in your young person's world can close the chasm of distance and isolation. Often parents, caretakers or guardians find themselves experiencing their own stress when young people act out or show dissenting interest in their opinions or values. Instead, Cotter suggests a sense of openness and allowance without sharing your own personal stress, in order to give your young person a sense of safety. Cotter also touches on the sensitive topic of suicide and offers a suicide prevention workshop for caretakers and parents in November. Should you or someone you know be engaged in suicidal thought, fantasy, ideation or plans, please contact LIFELINE at 988 via cell or text. For more information about Brett's upcoming workshops, retreats, sessions and membership services, check out www.stressisgone.com, or if you are a first responder or military veteran, check out Brett's non-profit services at www.stressisgone.org. May the holidays and all gatherings be a blessing, an adventure and an opportunity to propel your journey to greater ascension and connection with your highest self. #spirituality #consciousness #ascension #manifestation #988 #lifeline #teens #social media #relationships #healing Support the show@dianamarcketta

In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton break down one of the toughest seasons for police, fire, EMS, and dispatch — the holidays. While the rest of the world is slowing down, celebrating, and gathering with loved ones, first responders are gearing up for some of the most demanding, emotionally heavy, and schedule-breaking shifts of the year. From missed traditions to emotional exhaustion (Amazon Affiliate), the holiday season can bring a unique mix of guilt, pressure, and loneliness that most people will never understand. This episode gives you a bulletproof, practical guide for protecting your mental health, staying grounded, and creating meaning — even when you're working through the holidays instead of celebrating them.
Send us a textIn this episode I dive into part two of my holiday survival series. This stretch between Thanksgiving and New Year's can feel chaotic, emotional, and full of food that pushes every button you've got. So I'm sharing the tools, mindset shifts, and strategies that actually help you stay grounded instead of getting swept into the holiday eating vortex.I talk about the power of incentives and why giving yourself small rewards is not cheating. It's strategy. Whether it is a long soak in the tub or a quiet movie alone, those incentives can carry you through stressful family dinners or long holiday events. You'll hear me break down one of my biggest safety nets too. No grazing. No walking and chewing. No standing at the fridge door while grabbing bites. Getting food on a plate and being present with what you are eating is one of the best ways to stay satisfied and in control.I also walk you through navigating holiday triggers, from difficult relatives to happy memories to grief that sneaks up out of nowhere. I share how I am preparing for my first Christmas without my grandmother and how planning ahead makes a huge difference. Then we get into the mindset traps. The “I'll start after Christmas” trap. The “this is my last holiday before I get serious” trap. The “I already messed up so I might as well quit” trap. I help you see those patterns clearly so you can stop falling into them. Before wrapping up, I offer two tools you can use if the holiday week feels like a true emergency. Weekly calorie spacing, which I don't normally recommend but explain safely if you choose to use it, and going to maintenance calories for the week between Christmas and New Year's so you can enjoy the season without losing control. This episode is all about empowerment, calm, and clarity. You don't have to dread the holidays or feel like you're walking into a trap. You can enjoy Christmas, enjoy the people you love, and come out of it proud of the choices you made.Support the showLooking for help on your weight loss journey? In this week's episode, I talk about my 2 biggest pieces of advice for surviving the holidays this year. 1) Lower your expectations! This means not expecting everything to go perfectly when it never (ever) has before and expecting people to be who they are. If your dad never wanted to go to a museum before, he's probably not going to want to go this year either and that's OK! 2) Set yourself up for success. This for me is mainly about setting your schedule, dropping or doing a crappy job at some things you normally do well, and trying to chip away at your 2 do's list instead of trying to finish everything all at once. Action item: write a list of no more than 3 things that you'd like to do this holiday season to consider it a success (and preferably choose things that were already going to happen anyway/traditions/things your people love or things you can do by yourself that only you control). And be even more careful about scheduling yourself time to get all the things done, including scheduling yourself some downtime! I promise you, your body will take it for you anyway by getting sick or watching 4 hours of TikTok videos!

The holiday season is fast approaching! It's a season that involves holiday gatherings, events and activities. Although most of us look forward to enjoying the festivities, the anticipation and excitement of holiday activities can build up anxiety and stress. Holiday stress is triggered by the inevitable complexities and tensions of family relationships, the pressure of holiday shopping, gift and travel expenses, and the stress of hosting gatherings or managing a packed calendar of holiday events. Good news, it doesn't have to be that way this year! Instead of running yourself ragged, take a deep breath, slow down and try these natural tips to reduce holiday stress! • Feel Free to Say No Although the holiday season is meant to bring joy, it can be stressful, especially when faced with conflicting obligations. Focus on achieving holiday stress relief by having a thoughtful plan and schedule. Don't overbook yourself! Fitting in family obligations, holiday events and finding the perfect gifts can be overwhelming on top of a busy schedule, triggering stress. Normalize saying no to situations that stress you out, whether missing a party that falls in a week that's been too intense at work or cancelling travel that is not very important to give yourself time to rest and recharge. • Eat Healthy The importance of eating healthy cannot be ignored at any time. Sticking to a healthy diet during holiday celebrations marked with lots of cooking and baking may seem challenging. It's ok to enjoy some holiday cookies and an extra serving of mashed potatoes, but try to remain mindful while indulging. As you enjoy the tastes of the season, be keen to include a variety of vegetables, fruits and whole grains in your meal. Remember to drink lots of water, limit alcohol consumption, and pay attention to the food portions you eat. • Exercise Regularly Physical activity releases endorphins or brain chemicals that act as natural pain and stress relievers. So, with all the holiday stress your body is going through, it's time to prioritize exercise. Not enough time to exercise? Get creative! Take advantage of any good weather to plan active holiday get-togethers, including walking, sports, or hiking. Regular exercise will help you reduce stress naturally. • Practice Meditation Holiday schedules can be hectic and overwhelming. Meditation can be a valuable mental wellness tool during this season. Embrace meditation practices that are focused on helping you develop awareness of stress and learn how to reframe negative emotions, manage anxiety, manage financial stress, and do mindful cooking activities. You can also incorporate gratitude meditation and reset and refresh meditation to help achieve a healthy mind and body over the holiday season. • Chiropractic Care Chiropractic care is comprehensive and goes beyond just bones and joints. As holiday stress builds up, you experience muscle tension, which causes you to feel tense constantly. This muscle tension can lead to aches and pains that take away your holiday joy, not to mention the back pain that may develop as you actively wrap gifts and make frequent movements as you attend parties and gatherings. An appointment with a chiropractor will help restore your body's balance while allowing the muscles to relax and feel a sense of relief from aggravating back pain. You will be more energetic and feel jolly throughout the holiday season through New Year's Day! Book an appointment today with Dr. Jason Jones at our Chiropractic office in Elizabeth City, NC.
Surviving the Holidays: Finding Peace and Hope Amidst Life's Challenges The holidays can be a joyful time, but for many, it's a season filled with heightened emotions, mental health struggles, addiction challenges, or grief. In today's episode, we're diving into a compassionate and practical Holiday Survival Guide—because no one should have to face these challenges alone. Let's talk about finding pockets of peace, joy, and meaning, even amidst the chaos. Segment 1: Why the Holidays Can Be Especially Hard The holiday season often brings unique pressures—family dynamics, financial stress, and the weight of societal expectations. Add to that the challenges of addiction, grief, or mental health struggles, and the season can feel overwhelming. But here's the good news: you don't have to simply endure the holidays. With the right tools and support, you can find ways to ease the pain and even discover moments of hope. Segment 2: Coping Strategies for Intense Emotions Let's start with managing those intense feelings that can surface during the holidays: Anxiety: Try grounding techniques like deep breathing or the '5-4-3-2-1' method to reconnect with the present moment. Depression: Create small, achievable goals, like taking a walk or calling a supportive friend. Overwhelm: Simplify where you can—say no to extra obligations and focus on what truly matters. Remember, it's okay to step away, pause, and reset when things feel too heavy. Segment 3: Setting Boundaries and Practicing Self-Care Boundaries can be your best friend during the holidays. Whether it's declining certain events or limiting time with triggering individuals, know that it's okay to prioritize your well-being. Self-care isn't selfish—it's essential. Take time for small rituals that replenish you, whether it's a quiet cup of tea, journaling, or a favorite holiday movie. Segment 4: Finding Joy Amidst the Chaos Even in the toughest times, there are ways to cultivate moments of peace and joy. Maybe it's lighting a candle for a loved one you're missing or volunteering to help others. Seek out what feels meaningful to you. Sometimes, the simplest moments—a laugh with a friend, the glow of holiday lights—can bring unexpected comfort. Segment 5: Building a Support Network You don't have to go through this season alone. Reach out to trusted friends, family, or support groups. If you're in recovery, connect with your sponsor or attend meetings. And if you're supporting a loved one, remember there are resources to guide you. Speaking of which, here are a few helpful links to explore: Holiday-Related Resources

In this episode of Fat Science, Dr. Emily Cooper, Andrea Taylor and Mark Wright tackle the challenges of maintaining metabolic health during the holiday season. Dr. Cooper emphasizes the importance of keeping a regular routine to manage stress and avoid metabolic disruptions. The team shares practical advice for navigating family gatherings and enjoying the holidays without compromising your health. Key Takeaways: Society's excessive focus on weight and appearance can be harmful; value shouldn't be based on physical changes. GLP1 medications need to be introduced gradually; skipping meals while on them can disrupt metabolism. Avoid contentious family discussions about weight, diet, and metabolism to prevent stress. Tryptophan in turkey is not the cause of post-meal drowsiness; overeating likely is. Stick to regular sleep and eating patterns to manage stress and maintain metabolic health. Extreme exercise during holidays can raise cortisol levels; maintaining a consistent routine is better. Family traditions and memories are important; a balanced approach to holiday eating can improve your overall experience. Personal Stories & Practical Advice: Andrea discusses her family's tradition of holiday baking and her evolving relationship with food. Mark shares memories of Scandinavian holiday foods and the comfort he finds in holiday eating traditions. Dr. Cooper advises on balancing food intake and avoiding overemphasis on weight loss during holidays. Resources: Connect with Dr. Emily Cooper on LinkedIn. Connect with Mark Wright on LinkedIn. Connect with Andrea Taylor on Instagram. Fat Science is a podcast on a mission to explain where our fat really comes from and why it won't go and stay away. We are committed to creating a world where people are empowered with accurate information about metabolism and recognize that fat isn't a failure. Messy Family Podcast : Catholic conversations on marriage and family
Kids will not always remember what you say, they will remember how they felt. Summary We have talked about the time between Thanksgiving and New Year's being the “Momolympics”, a time when there are tons of things to buy, make, prepare, plan, and basically the happiness of your children all depends on you (at least we feel that way!) How can parents embrace the holidays with children with grace and excitement? How can we keep in mind what is truly important for our family? In this episode we give some principles, but also LOTS of practical advice as we look back on all the different holidays we have had with our large family. Things look different now for us, but we can see in hindsight what worked well for us, and what was unnecessarily stressful! This is an amazing time of year and when you have kids the happy times are even more joy-filled, but the tough times can be really exhausting. We are here for you as you work to be intentional, even if you are a messy family! Key Takeaways The more you plan in advance the less rushed you are going to be. This will help you simplify so you can focus on what really matters. Keep in mind the order of your family culture! Spiritual life of the home, marriage, relationships, developing gifts and then the operations of the family. Get the kids involved! When they own traditions, it strengthens your family culture when they take on responsibilities for the holidays. Couple Discussion Questions What are the traditions that we want to double down on and make sure they happen this year? How are we going to reduce stress and delegate work to the kids? What is our plan to get them involved?
