In this insightful episode, we explore the transformative journey of the 12-step recovery process, offering a compassionate and structured path to healing. We are joined by friend of the podcast, Darren S, who brings his personal experiences and unique perspective to the discussion. The journey begins with Step One, where the crucial realisation of powerlessness over addiction and the unmanageability of life lays the foundation for change. Darren shares his thoughts on the hidden struggles of functioning addicts and the pivotal moment of acknowledging the need for help.In Step Two, we discuss the importance of believing in a higher power, which can restore a sense of sanity and hope. Building on this, Step Three emphasises the necessity of turning one's will and life over to this higher power, fostering trust and surrender.Moving deeper, we explore Step Four, a moral inventory process that requires honesty and introspection. While this step can be an emotional rollercoaster, it is also a critical moment for identifying personal flaws and uncovering the roots of dysfunction. Darren shares his own experiences of tackling this challenging yet rewarding step. This is followed by Step Five, which highlights the liberating act of sharing our wrongs with others, breaking the chains of isolation. The podcast continues by exploring Steps Six and Seven, which focus on acknowledging character defects and humbly asking for help to address them. These steps remind us that imperfection is a shared human experience and that humility is a strength, not a weakness. Finally, we discuss the role of service in recovery. Helping others not only enhances personal growth but also underscores the importance of community and connection in the healing process. The episode concludes by affirming that dysfunction is a common aspect of life, extending beyond addiction, and that recovery is a journey of continuous action, self-awareness, and service.Whether you're navigating recovery or seeking to understand the transformative power of the 12 steps, this episode—featuring Darren S's heartfelt insights—offers practical wisdom and inspiring reflections to guide listeners.

Our recovery journey requires courage and self-reflection, especially when we encounter Step 4: “Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.” Eric and Spencer relate our experiences, insights, and the profound transformation that accompanies Step 4, as described in the reading from the book “How Al Anon Works.” Taking a moral inventory may seem... Matt is back for another busy show this week, as we look ahead to the FA Cup and reflect on a busy, goal-laden week of league action. Maidstone United co-owner Oliver Ash discusses his side's start to the season, why it was a slow burner and looks ahead to Saturday's FA Cup trip to Solihull Moors. Beckenham are still top of the Isthmian League South East after a pair of wins this week, and new boss Del Oldfield discusses his start to life at Eden Park, why it was the right time to move and their spot at the top of the league. Deal Town were one of the sides beaten by the Becks, but they bounced back with a 4-2 away win at Littlehampton on Tuesday night and manager Steve King reflects on their start to life at Step Four and looks ahead to some big games this week. There's all the rest of the news from across the county, including goals galore in the SCEFL and a look ahead to some interesting fixture scheduling this week. Plus there's all the usual chat and nonsense, including Matt's holiday, reading books, freezing swimming pools and loads more besides. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Matt Bair and Ryan Hedrick continue talking about the steps in their recovery journeys, sharing how the twelve steps have made a positive difference in their lives and improved their relationships with those who support them. The idea is that these steps often provide the answers to what addicts or alcoholics are struggling with. By working through the steps, we can get better with ourselves, which helps us get better with the people who love and care for us. Step Four is about honestly examining your actions and behaviors and how they affect your life. It requires honesty and humility because it shows that you can't do everything alone. Step Five takes this further by sharing what you've discovered with someone else and your higher power, admitting your flaws out loud. This helps you realize that you need support beyond just yourself. Timestamps and Discussions: 4:24 to 6:44 - Matt discusses how these steps focus on the addict's journey. In his Step Four, everyone he wrote about was a caregiver somehow. He explains how he uses the steps to measure what his relationships could look like. 6:44 to 8:23 - Ryan discusses a question regarding what society expects of him in the fourth step. He shares how his obsession and compulsion can still be intense, even during recovery. He also mentions that Step Four looks at his strengths, not just the negatives. 8:36 - 8:59 - Why rigorous honesty is vital to the fourth step. Getting our house in order to do this step takes willingness. 9:26 - 11:13 - The guys explain how steps four and five are related. The fourth step involves looking inward to identify past actions. After looking at himself in step four, Ryan explains that step five is about talking to someone else about what he's found. 11:14 - 14:39 - Matt says step four is about writing, and step five is about talking. Matt was so paralyzed by shame that he found his writing cathartic—step four addresses anxiety, fear, and sexual behavior. 14:56 - 17:00 - The personal inventory in the fourth step is deeply personal and loving, allowing us to see things for what they were. When we were using, we were professional victims. We used every excuse in the book to continue our behavior. Ryan talks about the therapeutic value of one addict helping each other. 17:20 - 19:25 - We can't carry shame or will use/drink again. The steps are in order for a reason. Sitting in recovery meetings and listening to people share their experiences about how they apply the steps in their lives can help your addict identify similar experiences. Pain can be a great motivator. 20:00 - 23:07 - The steps are designed to bring your addict closer to a loving higher power who can guide us in our recovery. Commitment is an often overlooked principle. Ryan talks about the fantasies he created during his drug use. Commitment to work and applying the principles in these steps is the most important thing your addict needs to do. 23:39 Closing thoughts. One of the most common questions both new and seasoned podcasters ask is, “What kind of equipment do I need?” As podcasters, delivering high quality content is the top priority, and achieving this is heavily dependent on the equipment we use. In today's episode, Kristin walks listeners through step 4 of the "Starting a Podcast '' series, where she dives into the nitty-gritty of the audio components. You've already tackled the mindset work; now it's time to focus on the technical aspects of delivering a great podcast. Few key points from today's episode: When it comes to podcasting, the quality of your audio can make or break your show. He puts a spotlight on the transformative power of Step Four of the famous Twelve Steps recovery program. Brendan initiates the discussion with the handful acknowledgment of powerlessness over addiction, gradually transitioning into the transformative belief in a higher power, demonstrating the amount of hard work and introspection required to truly progress in the recovery program. Brendan recalls his early days in recovery, the fear of falling back into addiction catalyzing his work on the fourth step. He shares his experiences utilizing resources like the Hazelden guide and the insightful Joe and Charlie tapes. He indicates how following a structured, column method saved him from being overwhelmed while tackling the fourth step. In this moving narration, Brendan underlines that honesty played a pivotal role in his recovery. He shed light on the importance of recognizing and admitting to selfish behaviors that had affected those around him. The speaker also discusses the necessity of overcoming a victim mindset to truly attain internal acceptance and freedom. Through numerous attempts at completing the fourth step, Brendan eventually established a unique approach. By associating his feelings with past actions, he performed deep self-examinations, identifying past erroneous attitudes and actions corroborating his transformation and recovery journey. The podcast further discusses the immense challenge involved in the fourth step, where many face the struggle of accepting and confronting the unease that comes with self-discovery. However, Brendan underscores that this intimidating journey ultimately leads to personal liberation and spiritual growth. Brendan reflects on his experience at a significant workshop, where he witnessed individuals opening up to the idea of making amends with those who had once caused them pain. He discusses the significance of overcoming resentment, describing it as a formidable barrier to spiritual development. Providing an invigorating outlook on the fourth step, Brendan labels it as the "main cog" in leading towards active transformation and self-reconciliation. Also, listen to get the insider scoop on debt management from David's unicorn lending team and get tips you can't find on Google. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Episode Highlights: [04:59] DEBT There are some important things to consider when it comes to tackling your debt. David breaks it down into six points: Ultimately, your debt can be broken down into three categories: good debt, bad debt, and workable debt. Knowing which is which can make all the difference in tackling it. Don't just take David's word for it. There are countless stories of How to Buy a Homies in unique situations who learned this knowledge and successfully bought their first home. [01:15:57] SAVINGS Okay, now we're on to savings. Doing this at the same time as managing your debt means one thing: you need some professional guidance here to make sure you're on the right track. The bank has very specific criteria and having everything paid off is NOT a part of it. Here's what you need to consider when saving according to David: If you're terrible at waiting for answers, David does give you a VERY GENERIC low standard to shoot for when saving for a home: 8%. That means 5% for the down payment and 3% for closing costs. However, there are 1000 other factors to consider which is why having a professional guide is key. David breaks it down into six points: Credit scores take longer to dispute, which is why this step comes BEFORE handling your debt. You need to develop a rent replacement strategy. Your grandparents' way of doing things is way out of date in today's economy, so you need to strategize in order to accomplish your home ownership goals. Get a handle on your debt. This does NOT mean that it all needs to be paid off, but you need to be on the right track. Understand how different types of debt can impact your credit score (i.e. installment debt vs. revolving debt). Total debt means NOTHING. Your gross debt and monthly debt have very different implications on your ability to purchase a home. NEVER consolidate your debt before buying a home. The rest? Well, that totally depends on you and your situation. No one can tell you much salary you need to make, how much you need for a down payment, or anything of the like. But, having a professional can definitely help you along this process. If you're terrible at waiting for answers, David does give you a VERY GENERIC low standard to shoot for when saving for a home: 8%. That means 5% for the down payment and 3% for closing costs. In this episode, we cover Step Four of the Twelve Steps Codependents' Guide To The Twelve Steps, Melody Beattie STEP 4 - Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves Quote #1 - “... We may leave one person because of their particular problem, only to find ourselves in another relationship with someone who has a similar, or perhaps identical, problem.”(p61) Quote #2 - “... What do I need to learn about taking care of myself? And what's stopping me from doing that?”(p61) Quote #3 - “We are taking this Step to get to the core of recovery: self-responsibility. ... We are responsible for what we have created in our lives and what we will create. We are responsible for our feelings. They are ours.”(p62) Quote #4 - “The great codependency delusion is this: We would be feeling different if someone else would just do something, if we were someone else, if we had something we wanted. Not true...”(p62) Quote #5 - “This Step is the beginning of our own housecleaning. It is where we begin looking within for the solution to our problems and pain. It is how we begin to heal ourselves and our hearts. In this Step, we begin to allow the light to come into ourselves. (p63) Quote #6 - “An important part of this process is finally to feel as hurt and angry as we need to, so we can be done with these feelings... so we can be free from their control and influence. We allow ourselves to grieve our losses fully. Our unresolved emotions may be motivating our behaviors today. Unfinished business does not go away. It keeps repeating itself until we are ready to deal with it. ...”(p70) Quote #7 - “Feelings are an important part of us. Not acknowledging them is a key issue in codependency...” (p71) Quote #8 - “Feelings are not the disease; not feeling them, repressing them, holding back, is the problem.”(p71) Quote #9 - “Some experts now say that unfelt feelings cause disease - physical illness, sometimes death. I agree... ”(p71) Quote #10 - “Remember, our feelings are our responsibility...”(p72) Quote #11 - “We can learn to let ourselves feel, and heal from the backlog of feelings from our pasts...”(p72) Quote #12 - “…these Steps are also a self-esteem program. We work them to be done with shame, guilt, and low self-esteem. We work these Steps to learn how to love ourselves. Then we can learn how to love other people and let them love us.”(p73) Quote #13 - “We go back to the past long enough to be able finally to put it behind us and set ourselves free.”(p75) Quote #14 - “...And I masked it all in a strange dichotomy in which I vacillated between feelings of superiority and inferiority.”(p78 ) Quote #16 - “The grief from this process was enormous...” (p78 ) Quote #17 - “Over and over again, I grieved one less after another, from birth to the present.” (p79) Quote #18 - “This is the healing step. This is the healing-the-heart Step. This Step can change lives. Go deep. Go as deep within yourself as you can. Start with the top layer, and let the process take you deeper. Do not be afraid of what you will find.” (p80) Quote #19 - “...if we are seeking only the temporary relief and “high” of moral superiority, then we can continue doing that. But if we are looking for more from our recoveries and from our lives, looking within is the answer.” (p81) Quote #20 - “We have been doing what we believed we needed to do to survive. Now, we are on the way to becoming fully alive.” (p81 )
