We get up close and personal into the topic of not being seen nor heard as a woman individually and collectively. Do you ever feel unseen or unheard by those closest to you ? "Resolve" is the flavor we are serving up at Mama Rish's Kitchen prepping for the darkest night of the year, the Winter Solstice. Listen to storytelling about how our ancestors may have referred to this time of the year as the "Death of the Sun." This story goes, each year the Sun dies for three days on the Winter Solstice in what appears to be a standstill in the cosmos known as the "Southern Cross." Here in time and space the Sun hangs out on the Southern Cross for three days where it reaches it furthest point in the Southern Hemisphere. Thus, creating a very long stretch of night into darkness. According to the Gregorian Calendar this happens at precisely December 22 + 23 + 24 each year. According to ancient tale, December the 25th is said to be the day that the Sun is reborn as a turning back again from this dark stretch. What I find supercool is that the Southern Cross was a cosmological navigational tool for wayfarers for finding due South when sailing these waters. December's viewpoint looks toward the transition from Autumn to Winter as a preparation for the Spring (Vernal) Equinox. Also, I personally appreciate a calendar that coincides with the seasons according to where I currently live. Being an herbal gardener and aromatherapist flowing with the cycles of life it is understood there is a time for : planting, rooting, growing, and harvesting. AND there is a set time to be quiet during the dark nights of the year trusting that the light returns bringing hope for the journey around the Sun again. JOURNAL : What can I finish up? What can I clear out making space to look inward? What can I carry forward into the New Year along with hope as a wellness practice? Where can I be still to trust the next steps in time of uncertainty? Some more info for the wandering mystics, the English word solstice is derived from two Latin words: Sol meaning Sun, and sistere — to cause to standstill. LOTUS FLOWER BREATHING EXERCISE This lotus flower breathing excercise is a short but effective way to clear your mind and to energise your body bringing you into a spiritual balance with yourself and the world around you. Find a quiet and comfortable place where you will not be disturbed. Sit in an upright lotus position. Now we are ready. Namaste Rest your arms on your knees and follow my instructions: Take a deep breath of pure oxygen through your nose…. And at the same time imagining you are pulling in joy, peace, love, happiness, good health deep into your lungs down into your belly. Full your belly with that pure oxygen. Your belly should be expanding as it fills up with air. Hold this for 3-5 seconds. Now when you release this air… move your arms towards the top of your head in a praying position whilst squeezing gently the air out through your mouth. Your belly should contract whilst pressing the air through your lungs out of your mouth. Try to keep this for 3-5 seconds. Again, repeat this exercise. Your hand are in a praying position above your head. Breath in fulling your lungs and your belly with oxygen whilst you move your arms down towards your belly. Rest the palms of your hand over your full belly of air. Start rubbing in circles over your belly. Now…release the air slowly and simultaneously move your arms up above your head whilst releasing all the tensions, pains, worries, anxiety, sadness, bad health out of your lungs through your mouth. Take a few moments to enjoy this feeling and then begin again by repeating this breathing exercise at least 5 times to get the full benefits. Remember to hold the air in your lungs and belly for 3-5 seconds and releasing the air for a slow 3-5 seconds. Only stop this exercise once you feel that your mind, body and spirit are in balance with yourself and the world around you. This Sundance winner is cleaver and refreshing . “I loved the story being told from the perspective of a nearly forty year old woman who still has dreams and isn't afraid to chase them.” Well even if she is afraid to chase them she doesn't let that stop her and in doing so she finds her strength and her truth which leads to her being authentically her. You see whether Radha knew it at the time or not this was a lesson that her mother taught her through her own life.
