[Reprise] Franklin and Kate are joined by the incredible Radha Blank—director, playwright, rapper, and friend of The Black List. Her debut feature, The 40-Year-Old Version, premiered at Sundance and earned her the Directing Award, making an unforgettable mark on the industry. The film is a deeply personal and hilarious take on reinvention and artistic expression. Radha takes us through her journey—from playwriting and rapping to stepping behind the camera for her first feature. We also dive into her early cinephile roots, exploring the films that shaped her storytelling, from The Landlord to Cinema Paradiso. Plus, she shares the moment she realized film was her true calling, and how her mother's love of cinema influenced her creative path.Questions? Comments? Criticism? Dr. Mignon shares why she was so taken with writer and director Radha Blank's The Forty-Year-Old Version. This Sundance winner is cleaver and refreshing . “I loved the story being told from the perspective of a nearly forty year old woman who still has dreams and isn't afraid to chase them.” Well even if she is afraid to chase them she doesn't let that stop her and in doing so she finds her strength and her truth which leads to her being authentically her. You see whether Radha knew it at the time or not this was a lesson that her mother taught her through her own life. She learned not to stay in the box that others drew for her and in doing so she became the person that she wanted to be. What a lesson and told with great humor. Thank you RadhaMusPrime. What had once felt like a promising career has now become a mundane existence where Radha is trying to sort it all out. She's surrounded by a gaggle of silly yet fun high schoolers, a zany and fun and loyal BFF while also stepping into a possible relationship she wasn't really looking for to begin as she grapples with aging, being a Black Woman, grief, being undervalued professionally, all while just trying to stay afloat in NY. On this episode, I discuss how classic and contemporary Black women storytellers embody a truth and depth in their work that deserves to be understood and studied and how freedom was and still is an ever-present theme for these women. Using authors discussed in the Harvard Divinity School class titled, “Black Women, Black Church, and Self-Narratives” taught by Dr. Nyasha Junior, I will also invite the work of Radha Blank, writer-producer-director-star of “The Forty-Year-Old Version.” Storytelling for Black women is about exclaiming our existence. It’s about saying we're here and we matter. More than anything it’s a means of survival; a fight to preserve tradition and culture as this is essential to the human spirit. In a raucous holiday episode, the Spoilers laud Radha Blank's heartwarming tribute to New York City and creaky black knees. With a hilarious and Irreverent critical eye, the Spoilers have nothing but good things to say about this funny, insightful, and heartwarming film. They love Radha's edge, they love her dope AARP lyrics, and they LOVE D (don't even get us started on that love scene). This is an all-love episode with a sprinkle of wisdom here and there for seasoning. Frankly, it's exactly the kind of episode we envisioned when we started this whole thing 26 episodes ago -- just four friends talking and laughing about something they like. Hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.

"The Forty-Year-Old Version" bursted onto the scene at Sundance earlier this year to tremendous buzz and acclaim. While most of the praise has been directed towards the film's star, director, writer and producer, Radha Blank, cinematographer Eric Branco has also be singled out for his black and white photography of New York City which helps to give the film an early 90s independent feeling. Eric was kind enough to talk with Next Best Picture about his process into making the film, how he came aboard the project, working with Radha and more! Take a listen below!
