What tools help ensure that you as the filmmaker are not misunderstood? In our final (ha!) episode looking at Talking Directly to the Audience, we turn away from character-and-text based craft tools to look at other ways that filmmakers - whether they be directors, writers, editors, or anyone else - can make the audience feel their 'hand' more. To that end, Mel, Stu and Chas dive into ADAPTATION, STORIES WE TELL and THE FORTY-YEAR-OLD VERSION. We discuss structure (in particular how to structure more “meta” stories), the influence of TikTok and YouTube in portraying character authenticity, how to set up scenes where your characters can actually debate what your story is really about., and get into the gritty of how “in the story world” the communication from the filmmakers is. Ultimately, in exploring these three power films through this lens, we discover that these tools give filmmakers more control in conveying their theme. Quelle surprise. I wasn't really sure if I wanted to share, well anything personal, let alone my age. So this podcast is been gathering some dust. But so much of what is happening currently, shifted with this birthday. So, here's to being lucky enough to be 40.
In the wonderful film The Forty-Year-Old Version, playwright Radha Blank plays a variation on herself. Frustrated by a stall in her theater career, Radha finds a new passion: she becomes a rapper. The film is so good that we recently added it to the New Black Film Canon – a list of the best films by Black directors that we updated in partnership with Slate. And you can watch it on Netflix.
A middle aged black woman's hilarious and inspiring journey from Broadway to Rap. Unpretentious and clever.

Shoutout to Newburgh, NY's own Oswin Benjamin for coming on my show for an interview! Oswin discussed his new collective album with Chris Rivers and Denzil Porter called Apophenia. He got into his famous 10-minute freestyle with Sway, being homeless at that time, and his relationship with God. He told a story about a dream that he had with the late great Nipsey Hussle telling him that it's all on perfect timing. He talked about his acting debut as D in The Forty-Year-Old-Version, not knowing that he was nominated as a best supporting actor for a Chlotrudis award, and being nominated for a Grammy Award for being featured on Royce da 5'9's On the Block off of The Allegory. He also got into why it was time to move out of New York to Arizona, spitting 16 bars for Kendrick Lamar, and how Styles P was the first major artist to support him. Oswin announced that he will be dropping two projects this year. Stay tuned! Dr. Mignon shares why she was so taken with writer and director Radha Blank's The Forty-Year-Old Version. This Sundance winner is cleaver and refreshing . “I loved the story being told from the perspective of a nearly forty year old woman who still has dreams and isn't afraid to chase them.” Well even if she is afraid to chase them she doesn't let that stop her and in doing so she finds her strength and her truth which leads to her being authentically her. You see whether Radha knew it at the time or not this was a lesson that her mother taught her through her own life. She learned not to stay in the box that others drew for her and in doing so she became the person that she wanted to be. What a lesson and told with great humor. Thank you RadhaMusPrime. This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to discuss the film "The Forty Year Old Version." The film tells the somewhat true story of Radha Blank's (the writer, director, and star of the film) life as she is about to hit 40 years old and as a fledgling playwright in New York, decides to take up a career as a rap artist instead.
This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to announce the next film, the 2020 film "The Forty Year Old Version." The film follows a struggling playwright who decides to start a rap career at age 40. The random topic this week is all about the new report of the NFL's controversial "racial norming" policy toward Black players specifically.
It's no surprise that Haskiri Velazquez acquired the "do it myself" attitude. Growing up in Washington Heights NY, she didn't have the resources she needed to succeed in her career, but she never gave up. With many pursuits outside of school, Haskiri attended a non-profit organization called Urban Arts Partnership, where she took their Lifestories Theater program. Her passion for Acting was known from the start as she would have busy school days and Auditions during the week, and during the weekends, she would attend her theater classes for about 6 hours a day (which, by the way, was about a two-hour subway ride to and from her home). Haskiri put on lots of black-box productions at Theater Row in Times Square and even at the Lucille Lortel Theater with her theater program where she captured her audiences. During this time, Haskiri had the opportunity to be directed by Gina Rodriguez, Jesse Williams, and Victor Maog. Though she started off as a theater kid, it wasn't long after her graduating the program and becoming an Alumni that she transitioned into TV/Film. Her first on-screen role was in NYC 22 as 'Tatiana Garcia'; from that moment on, it was clear how much the camera loved her that even director David Rambo mentioned it to her father. Since then, Haskiri went on to booking more roles such as playing 'Shyvon Stevens' in Law&Order SVU (NBC), The Birch as recurring character 'Charlotte' for Facebook Watch, Guest Starring as 'Melissa Rodriguez' on Blue Bloods (CBS), 'Rosa' in the Forty-Year-Old Version feature film which premiered at Sundance (2020) and is set to premiere globally on Netflix (on October 9th). Most recently, Haskiri has been cast as 'Daisy,' the lead in the Saved By The Bell Reboot. Haskiri has plans to start her own Non-profit and hopes to inspire other Latinx to keep pursuing their dreams no matter how big it may seem. She also hopes to keep seeing the right representation for her fellow Latinx community on screen. Resources:

The Addington siblings record together in-person for the first time in almost two years to take a good look at Radha Blank's wonderful breakout 2020 film “The Forty-Year-Old Version.” Who (usually) gets to make NYC coming-of-age films? How great are the teens in this movie? What does it all have to say about the creative process? And what's up with that title anyway? Plus, Aislinn tries to stump Tobin with a game that pokes at his age...

Film critic Victor Stiff (@VictorJStiff) talks defining one's success and the gatekeepers of art in The Forty-Year-Old Version.
„I guess I'm kind of putting myself out there.” Warum? Ihr werdet es hören :D

"The Forty-Year-Old Version" bursted onto the scene at Sundance earlier this year to tremendous buzz and acclaim. While most of the praise has been directed towards the film's star, director, writer and producer, Radha Blank, cinematographer Eric Branco has also be singled out for his black and white photography of New York City which helps to give the film an early 90s independent feeling. Eric was kind enough to talk with Next Best Picture about his process into making the film, how he came aboard the project, working with Radha and more! Take a listen below!
