1. Attention If you're not paying the platform to use, you are the product. Social Media companies just need our attention and our data is a by-product for them, to use any platform we all have to make accounts on it. Nowadays most people spend a minimum of 1hr to a maximum of 4hr on social media apps. But you can use social media for your educational purpose also. The way you interact with a post on social media that's the same way only the platform shows you ADs (advertisements) and related content on your feed. Social media companies use our data to show us Ads on our feed (Home Page) - Fist Page. Apps make us addicted to using and scrolling, I think the most used body part for using the phone is HAND but THUMB gets the award for touching the mobile screen more. Where you lose hours of the day clicking on random nothingness, but as I wrote above that we should use social media apps for education and follow good people. Learn and also share your experiences on that platform so that others can learn while using the apps. One day I observed that I picked up my phone with one task in mind and an hour later realized I spent the whole time scrolling Instagram Reels and completely forgot why I picked up my phone. How does social media compete for your attention, does the YouTube algorithm need to be stopped, and is Netflix's "The Social Dilemma" accurate? Today I spoke with acclaimed author Brian Christian about something thats been worrying me, the negative effects of the YouTube recommended algorithm. We also covered his books Algorithms to Live By which explains how to manage your time more effectively (according to machines) and The Alignment Problem where Brian writes about his concerns if we lose control of artificial intelligence. Personally, I wish I would have watched The Social Dilemma before I started using social media many years ago and I worry that social media is giving kids (and us adults) spikes of anxiety. I may sound dramatic but I wonder that if we lose control, social media can ruin/destroy our mental health. Finally, Brian is too brilliant for me not to ask his take on if life is actually a simulation (simulation theory) + Elon Musk, Tesla, artificial intelligence, algorithms: pros and cons, and much more.
