What happens when trial lawyers stop performing and start connecting? In this episode of the Trial Lawyers College podcast, Ron Estefan sits down with Natanya Brooks to discuss how the TLC method transformed not only her approach to trial work, but her life. Natanya shares how psychodrama, vulnerability, and authentic human connection helped her become more present with clients, juries, family, and herself. From processing personal loss to learning to trust her own voice in the courtroom, she reflects on the power of showing up as a genuine human being rather than performing a role. This inspiring conversation explores why connection, not perfection, is often the key to effective advocacy and meaningful relationships.

Comments! Mysogny and Sisterhood! Then we bring dopey with Natanya Ross — the iconic 90s child star from The Secret Life of Alex Mack. I sat down with her in LA and she absolutely opened up her soul. We covered everything from her crazy early fame (she was doing Gerber commercials at six months old), discovering she was adopted at 19, her adoptive mother's horrific betrayal and financial abuse, to descending into heavy opioid and heroin addiction. Natanya got real about living in a car and at the notorious American Hotel on Skid Row with other child stars, her relationship with Brad Renfro (who tragically overdosed and died right next to her), the later death of her fiancé Blake, and how she fought her way into long-term recovery. She's now deep in the treatment world — Executive Director of Business Development at Valiant Behavioral Health, President of the Women's Association of Addiction Treatment, and founder of San Fernando Valley Feed the Homeless. This one is serious Dopey business — raw child star trauma, Hollywood darkness, and triumphant recovery all in one. ALL THAT AND WAY MORE on this weeks new episode of that good old Dopey Show! Send us a text message and tell us your thoughts.A woman signs up 3,000 new members, walks into a meeting she was invited to lead, and is assassinated at the podium. That single moment opens a window into the hidden architecture of a global movement and the women who kept it alive when headlines and historians looked away. We continue our conversation with Dr. Natanya Duncan to explore the life and legacy of Princess Laura Adorkor Kofey and the broader force she represents: efficient womanhood inside the Universal Negro Improvement Association. We unpack how Kofey leveraged overlapping memberships across Black political organizations to grow the UNIA at scale, and why her ability to mobilize made her both indispensable and threatening. Dr. Duncan traces archival breadcrumbs to show how debates about Kofey's origins obscured the central question: who shot her, and what does that reveal about power, loyalty, and gender in mass movements? We broaden the lens to spotlight women like Henrietta Vinton Davis who signed stock certificates and underwrote the Black Star Line, illustrating how everyday decisions about money, mutual aid, and accountability built real infrastructure. This isn't just civil rights history; it's a blueprint for Black autonomy and human rights that shaped the tactics of later movements and still resonates now. Tune in, rethink the narrative, and help surface the names and questions that deserve daylight. City University of New York Associate Professor of History, Dr. Natanya Duncan's research and teaching focuses on global freedom movements of the 20th and 21st Century. Duncan's research interest includes constructions of identity and nation building amongst women of color; migrations; color and class in Diasporic communities; and the engagements of intellectuals throughout the African Diaspora. Her book, An Efficient Womanhood: Women and the Making of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, (University of North Carolina Press 2025) focuses on the distinct activist strategies in-acted by women in the UNIA, which Duncan calls an efficient womanhood. Following the ways women in the UNIA scripted their own understanding of Pan Africanism, Black Nationalism and constructions of Diasporic Blackness, the work traces the blending of nationalist and gendered concerns amongst known and lesser known Garveyite women. Send us a text message and tell us your thoughts. What happens when the archive starts talking back? We sat down with Dr. Natanya Duncan to illuminate the women who built the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) from the ground up and gave the movement its global muscle. From a Kingston porch to Harlem kitchens and London cafés, their labor carried Garveyism across continents while reshaping what Black leadership looked like in the early twentieth century. Along the way, we meet names that deserve the spotlight: Henrietta Vinton Davis, Laura Kofey, and especially the Two Amys. Amy Ashwood Garvey co-founded the UNIA and helped the Negro World reach readers far beyond Harlem. Amy Jacques Garvey transformed the paper's women's page into a political and strategic forum, setting the tone for a movement that saw home life and nation building as the same fight.Threaded through the conversation is “efficient womanhood,” a term recovered in the archive that captures how UNIA women blended gender demands with nationalist goals as one practical program. We explore how public stance and private negotiation worked in tandem, why women printed their addresses and left a paper trail of property, and how their coalitions nurtured anticolonial leadership. This is a story of logistics, courage, and care: parades organized, ledgers balanced, alliances brokered, and a movement sustained in the face of surveillance and erasure.Editor's Note: At 03:14, Dr. Duncan meant to refer to Dr. Patrick E. Bryan instead of "Patrick Henry."City University of New York Associate Professor of History, Dr. Natanya Duncan's research and teaching focuses on global freedom movements of the 20th and 21st Century. Send us a textNatanya Wachtel knows what it's like to lose everything—more than once. She's lived through physical trauma, medical crises, paralysis, and the kind of pain most people don't talk about out loud. She's had to relearn how to live inside a body that stopped working—and fight to reclaim parts of herself that the world was all too willing to discard. But she didn't stop at survival.Natanya has turned that pain into purpose, creating healing frameworks and trauma-informed tools that meet people where they are—especially those who've been overlooked, underestimated, or left behind. Through her platform, The NatanyaExperience, she works with first responders, veterans, incarcerated individuals, and survivors of deep personal loss to help them rebuild not just their identity, but their sense of worth. She's not a guru. She's not a life coach. And she doesn't show up with a script. She shows up because she's been there.Alongside her lived experience, Natanya brings decades of work in behavioral science and integrative wellness, volunteering her time in nonprofits focused on suicide prevention, trauma recovery, and mental health access for vulnerable communities. She collaborates with pioneers in brain science and medical innovation to advance non-invasive technologies—from vagus nerve stimulation to vibrational healing and neuroplasticity-based interventions—because she believes that true healing requires both science and soul. Her mission is simple: to help people remember they're not broken—they're becoming. For the audience of The Suffering Podcast, Natanya offers no platitudes. In this episode, I recap my trip to Las Vegas for the NFB of Nevada State Convention—part learning, part getaway with Liz. As chair of the upcoming Pennsylvania convention, I wanted to see how other states run theirs. Nevada's was short but packed, and I took notes, especially on their use of breakout tracks and Family Feud. Liz and I also hit In-N-Out Burger twice and even saw Michael Symon at his BBQ spot. Navigating the hotel-casino was tricky, and I share some challenges, especially solo ones. The Meta smart glasses I wore were a game-changer for identifying signs and surroundings. We capped off the trip with a frustrating movie experience—the audio description device failed again. Still, it was great getting away and gathering ideas for our Harrisburg event this fall. "No offense but I hate going to the dentist". If you've been practicing dentistry long enough, I'm sure you've had patients plop in the chair and say this to you. They don't mean anything personal. And yet, you know first hand how a patient presenting with a negative attitude can inadvertently predispose themselves to negative outcomes when it comes to dental treatment. You also know how important your words matter in communicating and managing patients in the attempt to help create a positive experience for them. In this episode, we'll explore and learn how creating a positive mindset is not only helpful but a necessity for making the changes you want in your life. In this episode I'm discussing how you can apply it to weight loss - but even if you aren't wanting to lose weight, I encourage you to still listen to this episode and simply swap out the weight loss examples with something that is most relevant for the changes you want in your own life. I'll show you how the words you think to YOURSELF really matter in creating the changes you want! Natanya Brooks joins us for Episode 106 of Sports ‘N Torts. Natanya is a lawyer in Atlanta, which of course we discussed. However, we spent the bulk of this podcast talking about her experience as a swimmer who through hard work, grit, and dedication earned a scholarship to swim collegiately at Georgia Tech. Swimming has had a profound effect on her life and has installed the values that set her up for success in life.We had a great discussion about youth sports. Natanya talked about how to maximize the youth sports experience for children while making it fun and keeping them competitive. We discuss time management, early mornings in the pool and what it takes to succeed. A former swim coach, Natanya has strong feelings on “burn out” and shares her tips on raising successful athletes. We talked about when she realized that college swimming was a possibility and her recruitment process. Natanya talked about her college experience to include the connections made and how it prepared her for business and her law practice. We talked about the different trips she has taken involving swimming and being in the water. In 2018, Natanya founded Brooks Injury Law to have the opportunity to make a real difference in the life of others. Natanya wanted to bring individuals and families out of despair through recovery and to work with families to honor and comfort those who are not able to recover from their injuries.Natanya has implemented different marketing strategies and has followed the growth. Her goal for Brooks Injury Law was to always be able to help clients in need. As clients began to ask for help in different areas of personal injury law, instead of turning them away, she decided to expand our team. She was always well-equipped to handle road wrecks but as premises cases like negligent security shootings came in, we were able to bring in additional attorneys to handle the complex legal issues and appellate work that comes with those cases. Next, a medical malpractice branch was added to the firm, followed by a products, civil rights, and class action practice area. She has done just that with her firm now employing 9 lawyers and 25+ staff. As always, this episode is powered by the J. Stein Law Firm – a personal injury law firm in Atlanta, Ga – www.jsteinlawfirm.com
