Heart Attack Kids originally started as a two-piece punk band made up of lead singer and guitarist Jared Ellul and drummer Nathan Stock in 2013. This high energy rock music really transferred well to their live performances, and the band would sign their first record deal in 2016 with Undergorund Operations and subsequently release their first full length album "No Future". The band would eventually switch labels and sign to Toronto Independent label New Damage to record and release their second full-length album "Bad Luck Like Gold". Not long after releasing this album Nathan announced that he would be leaving the band - on good terms mind you, he just wanted to dedicate his time to his now fiance and start a career in carpentry - Jared and Nathan are still good friends this day. Jared didn't let this stop him from continuing on the project and he quickly teamed up with bassist Craig Gignac and session drummer Mark Swann and the three of them are currently working on new music. Can't Stop is the first single we've heard with the new line up, but Jared hints that another single will be out before the end of 2020. I spoke with the bands co-founder and frontman, Jared about the history of the band, the new line up and new music he's been getting into. We even chat about the struggles of trying to stay fit during this pandemic. Here's my chat with Jared of Heart Attack Kids.
Cheffing beer with the philosopher beermakers... The Garage Hour goons got their guns to Burning Beard for a serious hour of brewing business in San Diego's East County, including cursed locations, the tipping point for critical brewery mass, the importance of cultivating good retailers, and rebranding your failures. There's fancy beers like New Damage, regular Normcore, Old Banksy and Du Hast (some appearing in cans!), and some of the most elemental details of the Wondertwins' upcoming third-anniversary party at the Beard (April 13 - act fast, espcially if you like Alice in Chains, Faith No More, the Allman Brothers or Deep Purple). The Beard has the best jukebox in the world, and we always end up talking music too - everything from Chris Cornell in retrospect, Audioslave in Fallujah, and Filner in a headlock. There was also the Fiends, Deadbolt, a Foreigner/Asia/Saga shunt, and a minute or two on the upcoming Burning Beard Fight Club. Just add Jeff "Sideburns" Weidekr and Mike "Tape Deck" Maass (plus .45 Phil, Chef Jeff, the Lovely and Tolerant Karen and Hostus Maximus Justin Fort): it's gearhead talk radio.

This week, I talk to guest Brian Salvatore about the legacy of the late Chris Cornell. Show notes: - Brian: Was never a huge fan of Cornell's early singing style - Rediscovered his love for Soundgarden in recent years - Jay: First heard him when Temple of the Dog came out in '91, then got Badmotorfinger - The greatness of Mother Love Bone - Soundgarden was perfect bridge between '80s hard rock and the new sounds of the '90s - Jay: Saw Soundgarden in small club in early '92 and then again a few months later at Lollapalooza - Kim Thayil's guitar playing complemented Cornell's voice well - Jason Everman, the Zelig of grunge - The diverse nature of the Seattle acts of the '90s - The pressure of being the "responsible one" - Cornell's final tweets were upbeat - Hard to read into his lyrics - Most of Cornell's songs were dark - His death hit hard because he was ours - Feels like more '70s touring acts have more living members than '90s bands - The drugs were more prevalent in the '70s and '80s, but the '90s acts paid the price - Cornell's first solo album Euphoria Morning is really good - Less impressed with Audioslave - Soundgarden leaves a terrific body of work Completely Conspicuous is available through the iTunes podcast directory.
