Ep 118 England vs New Zealand – It was all set to happen, then it didn’t. But I’d already done the ground work for the episode by then. Hear what it was like to be at the first meeting between the two sides back in 1991 with England fan David Ward and what it was like to play in the game with Kiwi Mike McGarry. Kia ora and welcome to Thursday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect New Zealand. I'm Rebecca Caroe and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz. This podcast is supported by Hatch. News that the New Zealand and Australian Reserve Banks will cut rates again next week sent domestic share markets to record highs. With the US Federal Reserve starting to cut rates, will the US share markets follow suit and continue to break records? Hatch investors hope that'll be the case. It's been a big month of earnings reports with mixed results and investors will be watching for Apple's earnings report tonight. With US/China tensions hampering several tech shares, a good report will be well received by Hatch investors. Visit hatchinvest.nz to learn more, and to access a world of opportunities on the US share markets. Today this podcast leads with news reality checks are appearing globally. Firstly, and as expected, the US Federal Reserve made its first rate cut since 2008, taking its upper bound benchmark rate from 2.50% to 2.25%. It also ended its program of selling down the bonds it had built up during its quantitative easing program. It was due to pause that program in September anyway. On the news, the US dollar rose marginally. Benchmark bond yields fell. And Wall Street equities fell sharply, down one point two percent so far, which reflects a growing understanding of the underlying economic risks ahead. Inflation and employment are the two Fed mandates. They are struggling to get inflation up to 2%, but employment metrics seem to be where they want them. We get the July non-farm payrolls report this Saturday and today the precursor ADP Employment Report is out indicating 156,000 jobs growth, better than the last two months but a modest level compared with the last few years. The factory sector was weak again, with all the gains in the service sector. Markets expect a similar modest growth from the non-farm payrolls report. Overnight there has been more evidence the US factory sector is struggling. The widely-watched Chicago PMI has come in with a deeper contraction. In fact it is at its weakest level since December 2015. In Shanghai, the trade talks haven't resolved anything, but at least the two parties are trying. The next round is scheduled for September. And elsewhere in China, another large private company, this time a carmaker, has defaulted on a bond. To contain risks like these, officials are now saying China will accelerate the debt-for-equity swaps of qualified companies to reduce high corporate leverage. China’s factory activity shrank for the third straight month in July, underlining the headwinds facing them. But China's official PMI's show that the contraction eased somewhat. However their services sector, which is still expanding at a healthy rate, slowed slightly in July. Do you know that we have a full database of key economic data about New Zealand? It’s all charted so you can easily understand the perspectives. Access that resource at interest.co.nz/charts The latest negotiations for China's favoured trade deal, the RCEP are wrapping up with "good progress" claimed in this 27th round of talks. But fault lines are developing. New Zealand and Australia have been keen promoters of the 16 country deal, but reservations are growing about investor protections. And India is showing increasing reluctance at China's pushing. There is now talk that the Chinese will elbow India out of the group, and possibly New Zealand and Australia too unless they get their way. But many other smaller countries are also growing uncomfortable with how things are going. In Japan, the latest data on vehicle production, housing starts and construction orders all beat the modest estimates of analysts. But Japanese consumer confidence is still in the pits, and getting worse. The UST 10yr yield is now at two point zero one percent and down six basis points on the US Fed rate cut. Gold is now at $1,417 US dollars an ounce which is a 13 dollar fall overnight. US oil prices are little-changed today. They are still just on 58 US dollars a barrel. The Brent benchmark is also at just over $65. The Kiwi dollar starts today half a cent lower after the Fed cut, now at just on 65.6 US cents. On the cross rates we are softer at just on 95.9 Australian cents. Against the euro we are a little lower at 59.2 euro cents. That pushes the Trade Weighted Index down to 71.2. Kia ora and welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect New Zealand. I'm David Chaston and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz. This podcast is supported by Hatch. Self-directed investing should open a world of investment opportunities. Kiwi Wealth’s digital investing platform Hatch is the result of several months of customer interviews where Kiwi investors expressed a desire to grow their wealth, their way. Hatch provides investors with easy and affordable access to world-class investments. With fractional investing, investors can buy as much or as little of a share. Visit hatchinvest.nz for more information. Today this podcast leads with news equity markets are at or near their highs but the rest of us are looking at some very average underlying economic data. And this is a week during which Chinese President Xi and American President Trump will take centre stage. But first in the US, the Federal Reserve has stress tested their 18 largest banks, institutions that hold roughly 70% of all American bank assets. They have all passed the "severe recession" scenario. But the productive economy isn't as strong. The early June PMI surveys for the US came in quite weak. The factory PMI is now at almost a ten year low and this sector's expansion is dead in the water. The service sector is at a three-year low and its reliable expansion is buckling now. New order growth is weak and weakening. Meanwhile data for American existing home sales turned up in May and by more than was expected. But year-on-year they are still lower. Canada has reported very weak retail sales growth in April, and far below what was expected. In fact, if it wasn't for higher petrol prices, food and booze, they would have reported a decline. In China, banking stress is widening to another set of institutions. One member of the 'home team' has stepped in to rescue another. In Japan, their factory PMI edged lower and further into contraction. They are having their fastest drop in new orders since June 2016. Do you know that we have a full database of all farm gate prices in New Zealand? It covers sheep, beef, dairy, even logs. You can access that resource at interest.co.nz/rural In Australia, their central bank has been modeling the potential impact on the country if the Chinese economy suffers a sharp setback. It is not great for the 'lucky country', but it not all doom-and-gloom either. The UST 10yr yield is starting the week at 2.06%. Gold rose strongly last week, especially at the end and is now at US$1,399/oz. US oil prices are a little firmer, mainly because a major US refinery is closed due to a fire. US Pices are now just over US$57.50/bbl. The Brent benchmark is now at US$65. The Kiwi dollar is up almost +1c from this time last week and now at 65.9 USc. On the cross rates we are also firmer at 95.3 AUc. Against the euro we are similar to last week at 57.9 euro cents. The TWI-5 is now just under 70.5. And bitcoin is back in the news, having surged on up over US$10,000. This morning it is at US$10,739, up more than 18% in a week. The international anti-money laundering organisation sees cryptos increasingly used to launder the proceeds of crime and is moving to rein in the risks. And the global central banking institution, the BIS, said overnight that politicians need to quickly coordinate regulatory responses to new risks from technology companies like Facebook who are moving into finance. We retrace many of the events and personnel that played a key role in the culture shift, including the Macy Conferences, cybernetics, Aldous Huxley, Gordon Wasson, The Esalen Institute, SRI, Berkeley, Owlsley Stanley, Stewart Brand, Ken Kesey, Allen Ginsberg, San Francisco’s Human Be-In and the Monterey Pop Festival. The influential roles of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones are discussed, along with that of the ‘acid guru’ Dr. Timothy Leary, who later confessed to having been an asset of the CIA. We consider the templates that are so often employed by the social-engineers, including the Hegelian Dialectic and the creation of false heroes and role models, in the hope that the public can fully understand the ways in which we’re continually being played, as the first step towards not getting fooled again. The interview is interspersed with original music and speech audio to help bring the story alive.
