It is the black eye on the sport that would lead to the banning of eight players. Eddie Cicotte and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson both confessed to accepting money from gamblers. Cicotte's second pitch of Game 1 of the 1919 World Series hit the Reds leadoff batter, which was the pre-arranged signal to the gamblers that the players had accepted the fix. Jackson and Cicotte would both recant their confessions after key evidence went missing from the Cook County courthouse. Years later, the missing confessions would reappear in the possession of Comiskey's lawyer.September 28, 1941 - Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox goes 6 for 8 in a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Athletics to finish the season with a .406 batting average. No player has batted .400 since.September 28, 1974 - Nolan Ryan pitches his third of seven career no-hitters, striking out 15 batters and beating the Minnesota Twins, 4 - 0, at Anaheim Stadium. He also walks eight to run his season total to 202 bases on balls, joining Bob Feller in 1938 as the only pitcher to walk more than 200 in a season. With six games left, Seattle is two games back of the Royals for the final AL Wild Card spot. The Mariners are still very much alive, but they have their work cut out for them this week. Three teams from the AL Central sit in front of the Mariners in the Wild Card standings, and all three of them can thank the Chicago White Sox for part of their success this season. Both the Royals and Twins are 12-1 versus the lowly South Siders in 2024, and the Tigers are 9-1, with one series remaining before season's end. The Detroit Tigers won four of six games on their latest homestand against the Colorado Rockies and Baltimore Orioles, giving them 22 wins in their last 32 games. The Tigers trail the Minnesota Twins by 2.5 games — which is 3.5 games considering the tiebreaker — in the race for the third and final spot in the American League wild card, with 12 games remaining. Can the Tigers actually catch the Twins? Turns out, the Twins have lost 17 of their last 26 games. We check in with Bobby Nightengale Jr., the Twins beat writer for the Minnesota Star Tribune, to find out what's happening to the Twins, from three young starters struggling to two veteran hitters returning from injuries.
