Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander has announced that he will retire following the end of the 2026 season. While the future first-ballot Hall of Famer's decision isn't entirely shocking, as he's battled to stay on the mound this season due to injuries, the 43-year-old is looking to finish his final year on a high note, which includes an honorary trip to the MLB All-Star Game. On this episode of Baseball Bar-B-Cast, Jake Mintz and Jordan Shusterman discuss the incredible career of Justin Verlander, who achieved nearly every major feat a starting pitcher could hope to accomplish, with one exception: winning 300 games. They then wonder whether we'll ever see another member of the 300-win club, since the milestone appears to be out of reach for modern-day starting pitchers. The guys also discuss why Verlander and Max Scherzer have a difficult relationship as future hall of famers. Later in the show, Jake and Jordan talk about the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers getting on a roll and finding themselves right back in the American League Wild Card race. Jordan also previews his top 50 prospects for fans to keep an eye on in the MLB Draft this Saturday, as well as provides an update on the Home Run Derby field as it continues to fill up and which players will need replacements for the All-Star Game. The guys close the show by making their weekly picks for The Good, The Bad & The Uggla. 1:58 – The Opener: Verlander to retire 21:38 – Around the League: Who will the White Sox take? 34:59 – Home Run Derby field is filling up 38:20 – All-Star Game replacements 39:52 – The Good 48:43 – The Bad 56:26 – The Uggla Subscribe to Baseball Bar-B-Cast on your favorite podcast app:
Toronto was blown out 10-1 by the Giants, falling to 42-49 on the season and slipping further behind in the American League Wild Card race. With the offense continuing to disappear and the trade deadline fast approaching, we'll ask the question every Blue Jays fan is thinking: How concerned should we be? On Game Preview 92 of Flight Deck, hosted by Adam Peddle, he breaks down another frustrating night that featured John Schneider's blunt postgame assessment, Kevin Gausman's continued struggles, and a Blue Jays offense that made one of baseball's weakest lineups look like a contender. We'll also discuss whether Gausman's recent stretch is simply a bump in the road or something more concerning, how much the defensive mistakes are contributing to the team's collapse, and why the lack of hitting continues to be Toronto's biggest problem. Looking ahead, we'll preview tonight's matchup as Spencer Miles gets the ball against Trevor McDonald. Can Miles continue his breakout season, and should the Blue Jays begin stretching him out into a full-time starter as they search for answers in the rotation? With one week remaining in the 2024 MLB regular season, the Seattle Sports Guy and creator of The Funny 115, Mario Lanza, returns to the Jack Vita Show to discuss the Seattle Mariners' season and the latest trends within the game of baseball. Mario and Jack also take a broader look at the sport, from a national perspective. Mario is one the most knowledgeable Seattle sports fans on the planet. Each year, Mario leaves us a voice message, providing a detailed outlook for the coming Mariners' season, in our AL West Preview show. And each year, Mario has a generally positive outlook entering the season. He's remained quite patient and rational, even while the M's have just barely missed the postseason two of the last three seasons. It appears Mario's patience has run out, however. Find out why this is one of Mario's least favorite Mariners teams of his lifetime. Sunday, the Mariners held a four-run lead over the Texas Rangers entering the bottom of the sixth inning. The M's blew a 4-0 lead, falling to the Rangers 6-5, and squandering an opportunity to move up in the American League Wild Card standings. Both teams in front of the M's in the AL Wild Card standings — the Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins — lost on Sunday. With six games left, Seattle is two games back of the Royals for the final AL Wild Card spot. The Mariners are still very much alive, but they have their work cut out for them this week. Three teams from the AL Central sit in front of the Mariners in the Wild Card standings, and all three of them can thank the Chicago White Sox for part of their success this season. Both the Royals and Twins are 12-1 versus the lowly South Siders in 2024, and the Tigers are 9-1, with one series remaining before season's end. Meanwhile, the White Sox (36-120) are on the cusp of putting together the worst regular season record in MLB history. Mario and Jack talk about the 2024 White Sox. Have either of them scene a worse Major League team before? Later, Mario and Jack discuss how dominant pitching has become in Major League Baseball and the remarkable seasons Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani are enjoying. Mario and Jack discuss the state of baseball in 2024, thoughts on the 2024 season, baseball fights, and so much more along the way! You can follow Mario on Twitter, @MarioJLanza. He hosts two podcasts: Survivor Historians and Staff Picks. He wrote a book on the first three seasons of CBS' hit reality competition show Survivor called "When it was Worth Playing For". Guy, Lloyd, and Jamie talk with WJR Sports Analyst Steve Courtney about great win behind ace Tarik Skubal, and Detroit's remaining schedule.
The Detroit Tigers won four of six games on their latest homestand against the Colorado Rockies and Baltimore Orioles, giving them 22 wins in their last 32 games. The Tigers trail the Minnesota Twins by 2.5 games — which is 3.5 games considering the tiebreaker — in the race for the third and final spot in the American League wild card, with 12 games remaining. Can the Tigers actually catch the Twins? Turns out, the Twins have lost 17 of their last 26 games. We check in with Bobby Nightengale Jr., the Twins beat writer for the Minnesota Star Tribune, to find out what's happening to the Twins, from three young starters struggling to two veteran hitters returning from injuries. We also discuss the Tigers' near-perfect bullpen since Aug. 11, dominant pitching performances from Keider Montero and Brant Hurter, the return of Reese Olson from the injured list, and Jackson Jobe's Triple-A Toledo debut.
