We talk inaugurations! Which turns out to be less fun than we thought. Still though, it's a great night. Recorded before Biden's Inauguration (so we're cautiosuly optimistic of the events of that day,) we spend quite a lot of time wrapping up the discussion of the last two episodes before diving into the bland ceremony that is inauguration. Dennis pulls some underperforming states out of his hat and we have a special visit from our Obama Inauguration correspondent, Carolyn Cooper (She's very fancy, you know.) A big reason why you always saw Aretha Franklin carrying a purse onstage is because she required promoters to pay her in cold hard cash or she wouldn’t sing.Madonna’s in hot water again for ruining another celebrity tribute at the MTV Video Music Awards. Adorned in jewelry from her children’s home country of Malawi, Madonna presented the Video of the Year Award, and much like her tribute to Prince turned it into a story of herself. The tribute quickly went off the rails as Madonna told the audience how Aretha Franklin’s song Natural Woman spared her from “being mistaken for a prostitute” living above a crack house in New York City.Today the hilarious Matt Brown joins us to take a look at the life and music of the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin – her infamous feuds with Patti Labelle and Dionne Warwick, her insistence on being pad in cold hard cash and why she didn’t leave a will.MATT BROWN: https://www.mattbrowncomic.comPlus,➤ Designer Luke Song talks about Aretha’s iconic Obama Inauguration hat.➤ Fausto Fernós makes his debut as a reality TV bear on Camp Wannakiki.➤ It’s the end of an era: the Feast of Fun car that drove hundreds of entertainers including some of the best known drag queens has died in a small town in Canada.
This episode is ABC correspondent Clayton Sandell! He's been EVERYWHERE and has reported on some of the craziest stories in the last 2 decades. We talk about him being on a Coast Coast Guard Icebreaker, covering the Obama Inauguration, flying with the Air Force looking for the missing Malaysia flight and how he's the resident Star Wars fan at ABC. I’m going to assume that a good portion of you subscribed to the Better Off podcast have used either Uber or Airbnb. I use Uber all the time and it seems like everyone I know has used Airbnb. My producer Mark just used Airbnb for a week in Tokyo and loved it. James Altucher, our guest from the second episode, basically lives full-time in various Airbnb locations. It’s no exaggeration to say that these companies have almost single-handedly disrupted stodgy industries (taxi/limousine and hotel), become stars of the Silicon Valley venture capital world and made their impact felt across the globe. That’s why we were delighted to have a great conversation with Brad Stone, Bloomberg journalist and author of “The Upstarts: How Uber, Airbnb, and the Killer Companies of the New Silicon Valley are Changing the World.” Brad defines an upstart as either “a newly successful person” or “someone who does not show proper respect to the established way of doing things” -- you’ll need to decide whether or not Travis Kalanick of Uber and Brian Chesky fall into one or both of those categories. They certainly were brash survivors who didn’t create the ideas that made each company successful, but somehow they were able to execute better (more ruthlessly?) than their competitors. Unlike in his previous book about Amazon, “The Everything Store”, where CEO Jeff Bezos would not talk to him, this time Brad had access to all the key players and he writes a compelling page-turner. He opens the story with the 2008 Obama Inauguration, which founders of both companies were attending. What lessons have these wildly successful upstarts learned over the past nine years? How have they matured and become better leaders? After reading this book, you’ll have a whole new perspective the next time you ride in an Uber or make an Airbnb reservation. “Better Off” is sponsored by Betterment. Poetry is something many of us seem to be hungry for these days. We’re hungry for fresh ways to tell hard truths and redemptive stories, for language that would elevate and embolden rather than demean and alienate. Elizabeth Alexander shares her sense of what poetry works in us — and in our children — and why it may become more relevant, not less so, in hard and complicated times.
Elizabeth Alexander is a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets and the inaugural Frederick Iseman Professor of Poetry at Yale University. She’s the author of a new memoir, “The Light of the World.” She’s also the author of several books of essays and poetry including “Crave Radiance.” This interview is edited and produced with music and other features in the On Being episode “Elizabeth Alexander — Words That Shimmer.” Find more at onbeing.org.

President of the United States Barack Obama was sworn into office for his second term as President and Commander in Chief on Monday, Jan. 21. Obama, the 44th President, took the opportunity at his swearing in and later on at his Inaugural Ball to thank service members for their sacrifice. His appearance at the Commander in Chief's Inaugural Ball was marked by current service members, Gold Star Families, Tuskegee Airmen and wounded warriors that enjoyed incredible musical performances and a five foot tall cake, baked my Duff Goldman of "Ace of Cakes." See more about the DoD's support of the inauguration here: http://www.defense.gov/home/features/2013/0113_inauguration/ In response to ongoing violence in neighboring Syria, the U.S. has deployed two Patriot Missile Batteries to Turkey as a larger group of NATO forces. Joining the U.S. service members will be missile defenders from Germany and The Netherlands.
