Queen of Soul – Aretha Franklin bekam diesen Titel schon in den frühen 60er Jahren zugeschrieben. In 14 Tagen findet Ihr hier Teil 2. A master is someone who teaches, a master is someone who sacrifices and loves themselves. To master is knowing how to access your native gifts. As far as my guest is concerned that translates out to being one of the most in demand, highly respected, versatile bassists in the world. He was raised by his musical elders like Richard Davis who had been a guest twice on this show. The Pisces swimming upstream downstream always adapting, always churning, overcoming. Astrology aside my guest has played with The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin for the last 50 years. That was in between studying and watching Mingus dual with Dolphy in some mob run club. Lock the groove, play free, play a blues before the word funk even came into the lexicon. He's played and recorded with King Curtis, Jim Pepper, Duane and Gregg Allman, Eddie Harris, Gil Scott Heron, The Voices of East Harlem and Shirley Scott. A master gives back like Ali Akbar Kahn and Jerry Wexler and Dizzy Gillespie. Knowing their instrument, knowing their strengths like Chuck Rainey or Bernard Purdie or the late great Richard Tee.......my guest today is giving back on multiple levels including mixing live iconic music with youth baseball. Something only Jackie Robinson would have dreamed off.... Jerry Jemmott welcome to the JFS

211129PCRespect! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Hello! You've reached episode 601!! In this episode, host Erin Lim talks with Respect director Liesl Tommy about this major motion picture that tells the traumatic younger years of the Queen of Soul - Aretha Franklin. Aretha's young life was fraught with death, rape, as well as controlling, toxic men. Director Liesel Tommy wanted to tell that part of Aretha's herstory which is exactly what she does with a thoughtful eye on balancing all of the beauty and horrors of Aretha's life. This was Liesl Tommy's first feature film and she had to fight for a lot of the scenes you will see when you watch Respect. We're so glad that she did and we're also happy about the attention she paid to Aretha's time spent in Muscle Shoals at the famous FAME studios where she recorded her first big hit I Never Loved A Man The Way That I Love You.  Erin and Liesl talk about the choice of using the  b.roll from Martin Luther King's funeral (Aretha was friends and worked with the Reverend), her father's famous parties which included folks like Smokey Robinson who is brilliantly played by actor Lodric D. Collins, and working with the exceptional Kris Bowers who scores the film. Psst, Kris was on our show earlier this year talking about his short film - A Concerto is a Conversation.  There's so much to talk about including the costumes (leopard print caftan y'all!) plus hair and makeup so let's go!Respect is in theaters NOW.Follow Liesl Tommy on Instagram & Twitter--Thanks for listening and for your support!

After decades of performing, Thelma Houston continues to celebrate her long and outstanding career and shows no signs of slowing down!Over the course of many years, promoters have been asking Thelma, when is she going to return to her Motown roots? After much thought, Thelma has decided that the timing was right to launch a brand new band show called: “THELMA HOUSTON’s MOTOWN Experience” The show features non-stop classic Motown songs (that we all know and love,) along with a tribute to Ms. Houston’s friend, the “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin!Thelma was asked to join a stellar list of artists honoring the illustrious career of the late Donna Summer, who Thelma knew. Thelma recorded covers of Donna's classic songs: "Last Dance," Could it Be Magic?" and "I Love You." Thelma's 23rd album, "A Woman's Touch", was released recently through Shout Factory Records (distributed by Sony/BMG) and offers her rich interpretations of many classic R&B and pop recordings originally made famous by such male vocalists as Luther Vandross, Rev. Al Green, Sting and Marvin Gaye.

Along the way on my journey to cover the greatest generation of musicians I have discovered that in many ways the drummer can set the tone for an entire session. If the drummer has a preferred style and gets locked into that style then they cannot fit into different settings. They get locked in a mold and their growth is stunted. If however the drummer has the chops and channels his ego to fit into different musical arrangements then you have the makings of a real swinger. My guest today has the deepest most condensed resume of any musician I have talked with. Because he was in high demand he accepted unconventional opportunities that fostered his own creative input and growth. His power and rhythmic timing elevated many of the great electric blues sessions of Cornell Dupree, Joe Cocker and Chuck Rainey and BB King. His ability to swing the band gave Prestige Records a huge lift as he contributed to his own career as a leader as well as those of Charles Kynard, Boogaloo Joe Jones and Sonny Phillips. He has been a drummer for gospel and rock outfits. Along with the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. Let it flow James Brown, Gil Scott Heron, Galt McDermott, Leon Thomas and Steely Dan. Grady Harrell was born and raised in Los Angeles Ca. and started singing at the tender age of 8. He was greatly influenced by Smokey Robinson and taught himself to sing with a portable record player that his Mom bought him. Trying hard to emulate Smokey, he learned all the Miracles songs. He started singing in his neighborhood to anyone who would listen. At 12 years old he started his own singing group with 2 other guys from his block and named the group The Young Gents. They did talent shows and parties for a while, then added his sister Rocquel to the line up and changed their name to Papa's Results.Papa's Results began playing all the clubs in the L.A. area such as Mavericks Flats, The Total Experience, The Apartment and many more. Sharing the stage with such groups as the Whispers, Lakeside, Richard Pryor, Chaka Khan and many more. Papa's Results stayed together as a group for 6 years, even being managed briefly by the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and her sister Carolyn. After Rocquel got an offer to tour with Diana Ross Grady went solo. He signed with Dick Griffey's Solar Records label and put out his first Album, MWANA. It had little success with the regional hit Belinda as the first single. In 1987 he left Solar and signed with RCA records and released his second Album, Come Play With Me. The single Sticks and Stones went all the way to #4 on the R&B charts. His second Album for RCA was Romance Me which had limited success due to poor promotions. In 1992 Jermaine Jackson chose Grady to play the part in the hit made for TV mini series, The Jacksons, An American Dream, As Soul singer Jackie Wilson. The series was nominated for an Emmy award. These days you can find Grady Harrell touring with his band and recording new music. You can find out more about Grady Harrell at his website located here: http://www.gradyharrell.com/

Respect means different things to individuals. By defination respect means that you accept somebody for who they are, even if they are different from you or you don't agree with them. Respect does not have to come naturally. It is something you learn and for many was taught at a very young age. It can build and strenghten relationships. It is a very important component of both personal identity and interpersonal relationship. Disrespect appears to be spreading which can lead to breakups, broken homes and even violence.  The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin had a signature song R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Yet for some reason today we are seeing so much disrespect til it is becoming crazy. Such is happening in homes, the community, the workplace and in our politics. What happen? Let's talk about it. What are we teaching our children and our future generation as it relates to respect? To join in on the conversation call 516 387-1914 live 8/19/19 at 12pm Pacific. "Respect for ourselves guide our morals; respect for others guides our manners."

Danny “Easy D.” Dohrmann is a witness to the expansion of Music of the Mississippi.  In the 80's and 90's, Easy D. and his company, Satin Star Productions, rocked the San Francisco Bay Area. Easy D.'s venues included dropping into some of the most famous clubs in San Francisco Bay Area: Silks, The Palladium, Daz Club/1015, Club Metropolis, The Design Center. He also shared the stage with a young group called The Wrekin Cru and a kid by the name of Andre Young, Pebbles, E-40, and Sir Mix-a-Lot. But it was his tenure during THE PROS DJ Pool that Easy's contributions made the greatest impact. THE PROS DJ Pool, founded by Rico Casanova, had a mission. To bring the new sounds coming from the East Coast to the West. Without THE PROS and 5 other regional record pools (Miami, Houston, Chicago/Vegas, Los Angeles, and Seattle), New York Hip Hop, Chicago House, The Miami Sound, Freestyle, Los Angeles Gansta Rap, The Bay Sound, and The Northwest Mix-A-Lot sound would never had flourished. ** We celebrate the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin who was an American singer and pianist. Tonight we'll share some of her TOP HITS!!..including RESPECT..THINK & A ROSE IS STILL A ROSE.
