Our still recently minted annual tradition of the off-topic commentary is back! After records by Little Boots and GZA in previous years, we're once again wandering away from Our Thing for our final We Have A Commentary of the year. As voted on by our patrons, we're discussing an Iron Maiden record, 1986's Somewhere In Time in particular! On this week's Halloween-themed episode of the podcast, we're simulating an experience that'll be familiar to all DJs: fielding requests at a Halloween party. What tracks from within and without the boundaries of Our Thing might we be happy to play? Which would be anathema to us? Which might we consider if you greased our palms or plied us with liquor? We're also discussing the passing of Winterkälte's Eric De Vries.

On this week's episode of the podcast, the very amorphous topic of non-musical points of attraction to Our Thing is taken up. Half cod-anthropology, half therapy sesh, half wanton conjecture, this is about as loose as our general topic episodes are likely to get. 

For our 475th episode, the Senior Staff are quizzing one another as to their own history with I Die: You Die. That is to say, we've each grabbed passages from reviews the other wrote years back, and seeing if the original author can identify the records they were writing about. We're hoping it'll be a chance to think about what has and hasn't changed in terms of our understanding of specific moments and artists within Our Thing. On his podcast, “Our Thing,” Sammy “The Bull” Gravano, member of “La Cosa Nostra” and underboss of the Gambino crime family, tells the tales of the real thing. The man who once upheld “omertà,” or the code of silence, testified as a government witness against mob boss John Gotti in a 1992 plea deal. Prosecutors described him as “the most significant witness in the history of organized crime in the United States.” Since 2020, he has told stories of his time in “the life” over five seasons of the “Our Thing” podcast.  Alec also speaks with co-creator of the podcast, James Carroll, a director, producer, editor and cinematographer of film and television. Welcome back to the C O L L A B ZONE! Today we continue our new series of bonus episodes which we recorded with the help of students from the British Columbia Institute of Technology! As part of our ongoing engagement with Call to Action #27 of the TRC, we created a series of summaries of key Aboriginal case law decisions so that legal students, practitioners, and the public can further engage and learn about how our Canadian legal system treats Indigenous peoples. Some of these decisions are already available in full in other episodes, others we are still working on releasing as full recordings. We worked on this project with students from the British Columbia Institute of Technology, who generously donated their time to record the summaries for us. We also want to thank the 1492 Windsor Law Coalition who provided the basis for some summaries. Today we have Rio Tinto Alcan Inc. v. Carrier Sekani Tribal Council a 2010 SCC decision. The SCC reaffirmed the test from Haida for the Duty to Consult and held that approving the Energy Purchase Agreement in question was not unreasonable as it did not adversely affect an Aboriginal Interest. Welcome back to the C O L L A B ZONE! Today we continue our new series of bonus episodes which we recorded with the help of students from the British Columbia Institute of Technology! As part of our ongoing engagement with Call to Action #27 of the TRC, we created a series of summaries of key Aboriginal case law decisions so that legal students, practitioners, and the public can further engage and learn about how our Canadian legal system treats Indigenous peoples. Some of these decisions are already available in full in other episodes, others we are still working on releasing as full recordings. We worked on this project with students from the British Columbia Institute of Technology, who generously donated their time to record the summaries for us. We also want to thank the 1492 Windsor Law Coalition who provided the basis for some summaries. Today we have Mikisew Cree First Nation v. Canada (Minister of Canadian Heritage) a 2018 SCC Decision. Omnibus legislation was introduced which would have significantly impacted environmental protection. Mikisew Cree Nation was not consulted and brought a JR application arguing a failure of the Crown in their duty to consult. The Majority of the SCC held that the development of legislation does not trigger the Duty to Consult. Today, we bring you the twentieth installment of our Truth and Reconciliation Commission Series. Episode twenty marks the end of the Challenge of Reconciliation. This section examines the media's role in Reconciliation and educating journalists about reconciliation. It also discusses sports and Reconciliation, and corporations and Reconciliation. The section ends with a reminder that we are all Treaty People and that we all have a role to play in reconciliation. This episode begins at page 292 (Media and Reconciliation) and ends on page 317. The Haida people had claimed title to the lands of the Haida Gwaii but had no legal title. The BC government issued a Tree Farm license, and then transferred that license. The Haida challenged the transfer as it was made without their consent. The SCC held there was a Duty to Consult and discusses the basic principles related to the Duty to Consult.
