SCHRIJF JE IN VOOR DE NIEUWSBRIEF BLIJF OP DE HOOGTE VAN ALLE HR-ACTUA ABONNEER JE OP HET #ZIGZAGHR BOOKAZINE It's a great time to be in HR!+++Opgenomen bij Brussels Airport, met dank aan Nathalie Briessinck

HPR4379: Mapping Municipalities' Digital Dependencies

Hacker Public Radio

Play Episode Listen Later May 15, 2025

This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. In this episode, I discuss my ongoing project aimed at mapping the dependencies municipalities have on major third-party digital services, particularly focusing on Microsoft and Google , given their dominance in the market. The aim of this research isn't about debating the quality of these products—it's assumed that with thousands of employees, these services meet most quality expectations. Instead, the focus is on the critical implications of widespread dependency and potential risks related to service interruptions or supply chain attacks. Why is this important? Supply Chain Attacks : High dependency means higher vulnerability to targeted disruptions. Business Continuity : Significant risks were illustrated by incidents such as the CrowdStrike outage in July 2024 , which forced Brussels Airport back to pencil-and-paper operations temporarily. My Research Approach: Primarily, I analyze the DNS MX records of municipalities: MX records typically reveal if mail services are hosted on Microsoft (Office 365/Exchange Online) or Google (Workspace). A high probability that using these providers for email also means municipalities likely depend on the respective cloud office suite (e.g., Word/Excel/SharePoint or Docs/Sheets/Drive). Preliminary Observations: Belgium, Finland, Netherlands : Over 70% of municipalities rely heavily on Microsoft mail services, a significant warning sign of dependency. Germany, Hungary : Fewer than 5% of municipalities use Microsoft or Google explicitly via MX records, though caution is necessary. Here's why: Challenges Identified: Local MS Exchange Servers : Municipally hosted local installations aren't externally identifiable via MX records. Mail Proxies : Some municipalities use mail proxy services (spam/phishing filters) obscuring the actual mail service used behind proxy domains. Techniques Tested: SPF Records : Often reveal the underlying email service, though they may contain outdated information, lowering reliability. Telnet EHLO Commands : Municipalities commonly obscure their SMTP headers, limiting usefulness. Cloud Provider IP-Ranges : Investigating if mail servers run on Google, Amazon, or Azure infrastructure. Even if identified, this alone doesn't clarify if proprietary or replaceable services are used. TXT Records : Occasionally contain subscription keys or mail-related settings (e.g., MS subscriptions, Mailjet), but again, could be historical remnants. Unfortunately, none of these get to show me all of the third party services. Community Call: I'm reaching out to listeners and the broader community for ideas or techniques on reliably fingerprinting the actual digital service providers behind mail servers. Specifically: How to accurately determine if servers run Microsoft or Google services ? Any ideas to detect deployments of Nextcloud or similar open-source alternatives? Resources: Project Webpage : jurgen.gaeremyn.be/map.html Source Code : gitlab.com/jurgeng/mxcheck I'm looking forward to all your suggestions in the comments! Provide feedback on this episode.

SCHRIJF JE IN VOOR DE NIEUWSBRIEF BLIJF OP DE HOOGTE VAN ALLE HR-ACTUA ABONNEER JE OP HET #ZIGZAGHR BOOKAZINEIt's a great time to be in HR!Opgenomen in BAC - met dank aan Nathalie Briessinck

Marie Billon.

Reporters typically arrive to the scene of a major news story after the event. But on March 22, 2016, Sky News National Correspondent, Alex Rossi, was in the Duty Free at Brussels Airport when ISIS terrorists detonated two bombs in the departures lounge. Just metres from where he was stood only moments earlier, people now lay dead. Among those severely injured was Sebastien Bellin, a former Belgian basketball player. Just months before, in November 2015, ISIS had attacked Paris, killing 130 people. Because of the nature of that attack, both men now expected more bombs and further deaths.Within an hour, another bomb was detonated on the Metro in central Brussels.Amidst the confusion, Alex Rossi began to document, live on Sky News, the terrifying unfolding situation inside the airport. What he had no understanding of at that time was the devastation inside the departure lounge, where Sebastien Bellin lay stricken.Revisiting their respective experiences in depth this podcast is a graphic account of the attack on Brussels - which claimed 32 lives - from the perspective of both men.CREDITSTerror in Brussels Airport was recorded by Tom Gillespie.Production, writing and sound design by Rob MulhernSpecial thanks to our contributors, Sebastien Bellin and Alex RossiArchive, Simon WindsorTV treatment, Gemma WatsonTV output editor, Emily DeekerDigital, Tom GillespieHead of Radio, Sky News, Dave TerrisDesign and graphics, Brian GillinghamSocial media, Chris ScottPress and Marketing, Alexandra HortonEmail: storycast@sky.ukFor more on this story log on to www.skynews/storycast21#StoryCast21

Another week and more Monday good news in regard to Vaccines. This will be a topic of great interest and will feature in all media for the good and possible not so positive reasons. Now it looks as if there will be a number of Vaccine options available and to meet various challenges - general handling capabilities will be influenced by the vaccine requirements. This means that the eyes of the world will be upon our coordinated efforts and collaboration. This really is the time to show our united strength. Media focus will be immense, and we cannot afford to allow any failings. From Freezer to Arm we need to be at our best. Zero spoilage. Security will be a focus as will detecting fake equipment and even vaccines. Pfizer files for emergency FDA approval and once given could be distributed to every US state 24 hours later - tough target set as with UK and all inoculations done by April for all adults. The light is most definitely starting to shine brighter in what has been a very dark tunnel. • Press / media event in Brussels - Swissport at its Brussels Pharma Centre along with Brussels Airport and Air Cargo Belgium as well as specialist handler Hazgo showing how vaccines will be handled and protected within the cool-chain. • Menzies handling of Russian Vaccine in BUD. • TK Cargo carrying Chinese Vaccine to Brazil Alaska Air Cargo in partnership with HAECO cabin solutions have got FAA approval to load special containers on pax seats for essential goods like mail, medical equipment, e-com. Who knows, maybe there will be joint - people and containers on the same flights in the future to optimise revenues until confidence returns. IAG benefits from more realistic pricing of Air Europa United covid-safe trial is great news - NY Newark to London Heathrow - free rapid results testing SkylightcAIR - update Boeing 737 MAX cleared to fly again New digital event on pharma has started and will be released in early December. A little banter about media and the current series of the Crown.

Brussels Airlines, as part of the Lufthansa Group, in a press release today has decided to take substantive and essential measures to ensure the company’s survival. Impacted heavily by the continuing development of COVID-19, the airline has been met with ongoing extremely low demand and worsened financials, forcing the carrier to structurally reduce its costs to a competitive level in order to grant a future for Brussels Airlines. With the airline’s turnaround plan, Brussels Airlines will be cutting marginally profitable and unprofitable routes in an effort to tack its cost structure. The plan would result in a fleet reduction of 30% and a 25% smaller workforce. The airline is confident in its ability to safeguard 75% of its employment and grow back to profitability when expected air travel demand bounced back to normal by 2023. The coronavirus crisis is exerting unprecedented pressure on airlines worldwide, and its total revenue impact is expected to exceed 240 billion euros. The number of bookings received fell by more than 60%, and the number of cancellations reached a record high. As a result, many airlines in Europe and elsewhere have had to lay off employees. Unfortunately, Brussels Airlines was not spared from this crisis. Since the temporary suspension of all flights on March 21st, the company lost 1 million euros a day due to loss of revenue and inevitable costs such as aircraft leasing and maintenance. On February 28, the company first announced the impact on air travel demand. The situation deteriorated week by week and the number of days cancelled exceeded the number of bookings received. Today, demand is still very low. According to analysts and experts, the demand for air travel in 2021 is expected to be 25% lower than before the crisis, and the aviation industry can only expect to return to 2019 levels as early as 2023. “We started the year 2020 with positive results in terms of number of passengers and revenues; and for this summer, we planned a strong leisure offer as we could compensate part of the business we lost due to the bankruptcy of Thomas Cook Belgium. But the Coronavirus pandemic is hitting Brussels Airlines extremely hard. We had no other choice than to temporarily suspend our flights as of March 21st and introduce technical unemployment for the entire company. This unprecedented crisis has worsened our financial situation obliging us to take substantial and indispensable measures. The restructuring is urgently needed in order to survive the current crisis and to become structurally competitive in the future” Dieter Vranckx, CEO of Brussels Airlines Brussels Airlines To Reduce Fleet Size By 30% For Future Survival Avianca, Latin American’s Second Largest Airline, Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection SWISS To Resume 20% Of Its Original Services Capacity In June Czech Airlines(CSA) To Resume Services To Selected European Destinations On May 18 Brussels Airlines management plans to focus on achieving structural profitability after pulling the company out of the crisis, this will enable solid growth. The carrier plans to reduce its overall costs while increasing efficiency and productivity. Full positive EBIT margins will enable the airline to ensure its future, invest in the fleet and further develop its hub at Brussels Airport. In addition, Belgian domestic airlines will ensure that they continue to play a pivotal role in the Belgian economy and remain one of the core airlines within the Lufthansa Group. The main measures of the turnaround plan includes: The review of the network by focusing on the market needs and by optimizing the route profitability. The adaptation of the fleet according to the network optimization: from 54 to 38 aircraft (-30%) The reduction of the personnel costs by reducing the number of jobs by 25% Together with the social partners, the number of forced redundancies will be reduced to a maximum extent. Brussels Airport, srprs.me, de stad Antwerpen, Materialise, KdG, Torfs, … Volledige of ‘zachte’ rebranding? Brussels Airlines, not surprisingly, is most vulnerable. Unfortunately, the airline is not starting from a position of strength. Its 2015 earnings report released last week depicts an improving airline, but not quite a healthy one. Lufthansa is another airline likely to see revenues suffer in the wake of the attacks. And although the Lufthansa group is certainly a strong company, its fourth quarter earnings report was a disappointment. Lastly, will the Brussels bombings usher in another wave of security measures at airports around the world?
