At the London 2012 Olympics, the Somali sprinter Zamzam Farah became a crowd favourite after finishing last in her 400m heat by 27 seconds. Zamzam had grown up in war-torn Mogadishu, where she had to dodge violence while training on the so-called ‘Road of Death'. She competed with her body fully covered, but, after the Olympics, her family in Somalia received death threats because of what Al-Shabab considered unacceptable behaviour for a Muslim woman. She remained in the UK and gained asylum. Zamzam Farah spoke to Ian Williams in 2021.(Photo: Zamzam Farah about to start the 400m at the London 2012 Olympics. Credit: Olivier Morin/AFP/GettyImages)

Kathy Tremblay is a world-cup caption and two-time Olympian in triathlon who has persevered and excelled in her sport for seventeen years. An entrepreneur at heart, she has always surrounded herself with a high-performance team while searching for financial partners to reach the highest heights of her sport.  With the experience she acquired with these partners, including Cascades, Saputo and Oakley, Kathy has broadened her knowledge of the world of work and the close link between elite sports and corporate performance. With a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Université de Montréal, Kathy Tremblay has earned three certificates, two at the Université de Montréal in Public Relations and Industrial Relations and another at HEC Montréal in Business Creation. As early as 2006, Kathy planned to go into business and create a health and wellness program in the workplace, thereby leaving the values of health and balance to people in the workplace and to the next generation with the goal of optimizing human performance.  It wasn't until after her participation in two Olympic Games (Beijing, 2008 and London, 2012) that she officially decided to retire from amateur sports to go into business. Today, it is the passion to pursue this other dream just as ambitious as the Olympic Games that absorbs her. __ In this episode, Kathy starts by talking about her formative years and what inspired her to become a two-time Olympian in triathlon. She then talks about what it was like being part of Team Canada and representing her country at the Olympic Games. There were some notable Canadian triathletes (Simon Whitfield, Paula Findlay, and Kyle Jones) who participated with Kathy at both Olympic Games. Kathy shares meaningful stories about these triathletes. Kathy then speaks about her achievement of winning a gold medal at the 2012 World Cup in Japan. She goes back in time and shares memorable highlights from this race.  On the flip side, sometimes races do not go the way we hoped. While competing at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Kathy did not finish the race due to a cycling crash. She talks about how she accepted, let go and moved on from this performance. Kathy has always been able to demonstrate that it is possible to perform at a high level while maintaining a balance personally and professionally. She shares some mindset strategies and tools that athletes can use to avoid injuries, overcome setbacks and deal with burnout. Kathy explains what mental fitness skills, practices and strategies great athletes possess that set them apart from good athletes. Lastly, Kathy provides her definition of greatness and what it means to her. __ Host: Ben Mumme Twitter Medium YouTube Instagram LinkedIn __ Guest: Kathy Tremblay Website LinkedIn Instagram __ Let's Connect

WENDY GROUNDS:  Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers.  I'm Wendy Grounds, and joining me is Bill Yates.  Today we're talking with Ian Crockford, and Ian is based outside London, near Heathrow Airport. BILL YATES:  Yes. WENDY GROUNDS:  So you may get to hear a plane or two... BILL YATES:  Yes. WENDY GROUNDS:  ...going over.  He was the project executive at the Olympic Delivery Authority, the ODA.  And this was the public body responsible for ensuring the delivery of the infrastructure, the design, and the construction of buildings, transport, and the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic Games.  We're busy with the 2021 Olympic Games right now, so we're very excited about this episode. BILL YATES:  Yeah, it's great timing.  One of the things you'll pick up on a theme as you listen to this conversation with Ian, the venues that he was responsible for delivering.  Those venues were required to use materials and components that could be reused, relocated, or recycled to meet the Olympic Delivery Authority's sustainability objectives.  That's a huge constraint.  And it'll be interesting, I think, for our listeners as we go through and have the conversation to hear how frequently and to what degree this impacted the planning that Ian and his team did. WENDY GROUNDS:  The London 2012 Olympic Games were an incredibly successful Olympic Games.  I know Ian is very proud of the work that they have done, and they have received high praise from the Olympic Committee for the work that they have done.  And they've served as an example to many other countries who've been hosting Olympic Games since then. BILL YATES:  Yeah, they've set the bar incredibly high. WENDY GROUNDS:  Hi, Ian.  We're so excited to talk with you today.  Thank you for being our guest. IAN CROCKFORD:  You're welcome.  I'm looking forward to talking with you. Meet Ian WENDY GROUNDS:  First of all, I want to find out how you got to be part of this project.  What was the story that led to you becoming involved in this huge project? IAN CROCKFORD:  Well, that's an interesting one.  I guess we're back in 2005.  And as a new organization, the Olympic Delivery Authority was looking for people who could lead and manage the development of certain venues around the park.  I was approached then, and I guess in my CV was delivering the London Eye.  So I had actually had the benefit from the late ‘90s right through a rollercoaster, one of those 24/7 jobs, delivering the London Eye for the Millennium Eve. And that, you know, that teaches you not only about innovative projects and being a bit agile as a leader, as well as project delivery, but also great media interest that comes with these projects, and the need to publicly speak a lot.  And there's all that other paraphernalia, dealing with politicians at high levels and the other stakeholders.  So I guess that played in my favor,

David Karasek is a former Olympic swimmer whose passion for sports and competition has not diminished since he stepped out of the pool. Instead, he has been on a journey of self-discovery, learning how valuable and empowering it is to have a positive mindset before you are successful. He argues that believing you are capable of being successful is the essential first step to take as, without it, your self-doubt will impede you in those high-pressure moments. Armed with both this understanding and with his own personal experience, David is now a full-time mental coach. His mission is to share his insights with others, particularly athletes, as he wishes someone had shared with him when he was at the top of his game. In this interview episode, he and I look back on his physical journey to the London 2012 Olympic games and the mental journey that he has taken since then. Two-time world champion and gold medal-winning Paralympian David Smith MBE was born with a club foot and has had a rare tumour in his neck which left him fighting for his life after several major surgeries and having to learn how to walk again four times. We speak about how learning and competing in karate as a youngster taught him a set of values which would lead him to competing at multiple sports for Great Britain as both an able-bodied and para-athlete. His experiences have taught him his true values and he has been able to build extraordinary amounts of resilience that have enabled him to, literally, pick himself up each time he faces another life-threatening surgery. Competing as an able-bodied and para-athlete he has experienced stigma and he shares some fantastic advice about dealing with his ‘chimp' – courtesy of his friendship with author of The Chimp Paradox, Dr Steve Peters. We speak about how enormous challenge can bring about resilience and a strong mindset, how the power of sport can build good human beings and he shares some brilliant advice about how to build resilience

Anton Sveinn McKee er fyrsti íslendingurinn til að ná inn á ólympíuleikana í Tokyo 2020. Þetta verða þó ekki hans fyrstu ólympíuleikar heldur þeir þriðju en Anton tók þátt í London 2012 og RIO 2016.   Sögurnar af frammistöðunni og upplifuninni af ólympíuleikunum 2012 og 2016 eru frábrugðnar hvor annarri og þegar leikunum í RIO 2016 var lokið, eftir að hafa eytt lífi sínu í sundlaug síðan hann var 5 ára, voru hugsanir um að vera eftir á jafnöldrum sínum í atvinnulífinu, að vera of seinn inn á vinnumarkaðinn, að hafa misst af viðburðum sem jafnaldrar hans upplifðu á meðan hann var í lauginni orðinn ríkjandi í hausnum á honum svo sundskýlan fór á hilluna og við tók fyrirtækjaráðgjöf hjá Ernst and Young úti í Bandaríkjunum.   Vissulega sorglegur endir á íþróttaferli en eins og gefur að skilja er erfitt að segja skilið við íþrótt sem maður hefur stundað frá barnsaldri og hvað þá ef maður stundar hana á hæsta stigi og líður eins og maður eigi ennþá eitthvað inni. Áhuginn á sundinu kviknaði aftur í vinnuferðum innan Bandaríkjanna og æfingar í hótelsundlaugum og sms samskipti við þjálfara skiluðu Antoni einni af sinni bestu sundferðum þegar hann stakk sér til sunds á heimsmeistaramótinu í Kína núna í júlí síðastliðnum og tryggði sér farseðilinn til Tokyo.
