ARE YOU AFRAID IT'S TOO LATE? TODAY I have with me Mark Resnick who knows that as long as you're alive it's not too late, or too early, to make a shift into a more purposeful life. When his dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Mark's perspective on life forever changed. He already had a good work/life balance and treasured the value of life but embraced the opportunity for more. He went deeper into his own growth hiring a life coach, and dove deeper into his relationships making them even richer. In the midst of tragedy and darkness he found blessings and a new mindset that transformed his life. Bio: Mark Resnick is an entrepreneur, husband, father, coach, and author. His book, Ten Days With Dad: Finding Purpose, Passion & Peace During the Darkest Days of Alzheimer's and COVID-19, was published in March. A promotional branding expert by day and writer in the evening, Mark's other passions include baking, fishing, and visiting Maui with his family. Mark Resnick is an entrepreneur, husband, father, coach, and author. His book, Ten Days With Dad: Finding Purpose, Passion & Peace During the Darkest Days of Alzheimer's and COVID-19, was published in March and is available on Amazon. Mark has wanted to be a writer since the fifth grade, when Mrs. Blake, his English teacher, encouraged him to consider writing outside the confines of her classroom. Growing up in Norwell, Massachusetts wasn't special, but sharing a house with his dad and two brothers was. Most of the time they didn't know what we were doing, both literally and figuratively, but found their roles and fulfilled them the best they could. Mark has remained true to his middle child mold ever since, which has served him well more often than not. In 2014, his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Within four years of his diagnosis, his dad could no longer drive, cook, or take his medications. When the dementia demons took over, he couldn't stay in his home, either. His dad spent ten unforgettable days with Mark's family prior to moving into assisted living, and eventually a nursing home. Over the course of eighteen months, they shared more than 200 meals and 600 cups of coffee, during which time, Mark got to know his dad—and himself—better than at any point in their lives. During the darkest days of COVID-19 and Alzheimer's, his dad's memory, dignity, and, ultimately, his life were stolen from him, and yet, Mark found his purpose, passion, and peace in his life. Ten Days with Dad is a story about family, progress, personal growth, and healing, born out of a terrible disease and a once-in-a-century global pandemic. A promotional branding expert by day and writer in the evening, Mark's other passions include baking, fishing, and visiting Maui with his family. To connect with Mark, visit www.markjresnick.com. His book is available on Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09TYRG9X6 Mark currently lives in MA with Coleen, his wife of 25 years. They are in the throes of putting their kids through college and high school. From Richmond to Fairfield, and locally to Xaverian Brothers HS, they bounce back and forth, offering counsel as needed, encouragement when allowed, and nourishment–which is always enthusiastically accepted! What the World Needs Now is Peace During the Adversities
From time to time, everyone struggles with biting the bait. And usually the people we feel most baited by are the people we care about the most. But there’s really no benefit to biting the bait, especially if we want to stay connected. Today, I’ll dig into what exactly bait is, and share 11 ways to avoid biting it. Biggest Takeaways From Episode #95: The dictionary definition of bait causes us to focus on the wrong thing in interpersonal reactions: the other person’s intent. Instead, think of bait as your internal experience to what another person says or does (or doesn’t say or do). The eight phrases that I shared in my episode on how to keep the peace during the holidays all work when you’re feeling baited. A fantastic all-purpose response is to simply say, “I hear you.” A helpful response when you’re feeling baited is to repeat the other person’s statement or question. Another option is to amplify what the other person said if it was negative. Finally, humor can be one of the most effective strategies for dealing with bait. Highlights from Episode #95: Vicki welcomes listeners to today’s episode, which is all about how not to bite the bait. [00:39] We hear about Vicki’s upcoming special live event for podcast listeners. There, she’ll answer previous questions from listeners. [03:24] What is bait? Vicki explains why the dictionary definition is problematic in this context. [04:45] Vicki digs into the benefits of focusing on being baited as your own experience instead of someone else’s intention. [10:32] We hear about the first few of 11 potential responses to use when you feel baited. [13:47] Vicki shares the rest of the potential responses, including a standalone “ouch.” [18:47] Vicki adds three more tools, specifically for when you’re feeling baited. During this global pandemic, options for having fun have been whittled away for most of us. This got me to thinking about the intersection of boundaries and fun, and that's what we're going to explore together today! I’ll share five ways to have fun with boundaries, and I hope you’ll come up with your own examples too. Biggest Takeaways From Episode #86: When you learn how personal and relationship boundaries work, they can actually be fun! Expect it to take some time to reach this point, though. One way you can have fun with boundaries is to use emojis. Sometimes just a simple emoji (or a fun Bitmoji) is all you need to communicate if you'd like to limit communication. A short, simple phrase or one-word response can also serve the same purpose. When you need to have a conversation with someone who is difficult or can talk nonstop, schedule a conversation with them shortly before a firm commitment. It’s not always easy to do, but try having fun with boundaries by not picking up anything that someone else tries to give you. Metaphorically, don’t extend your hand and take what doesn’t belong to you. You can even have fun by making a game of being prepared with your boundaries toolbox. Highlights from Episode #86: Welcome back to the podcast! Vicki talks about today’s topic: the intersection of boundaries and fun. [00:39] The first way to have fun with boundaries is simple: use emojis! [04:15] Vicki talks about the second way you can have fun with boundaries, which is using a short phrase or even saying nothing at all! [07:55] One of Vicki’s favorite ways to have fun with boundaries involves strict time limits. [13:09] The fourth way to have fun with boundaries is to not pick up anything that someone else is trying to give you. [15:31] Finally, you can have fun with boundaries by anticipating certain situations in advance and bringing your boundaries toolbox along. [18:00] Vicki recaps the five ways she’s talked about to have fun with boundaries.[24:19] Links and Resources: Vicki Tidwell Palmer Moving Beyond Betrayal by Vicki Tidwell Palmer 5-Step Boundary Solution Clarifier Vicki Tidwell Palmer on Instagram Bitmoji Beyond Bitchy Podcast | Episode #1: Boundaries: What They Are and Why They’re So Misunderstood Beyond Bitchy Podcast | Episode #58: Codependency & Boundaries Beyond Bitchy Podcast | Episode #74: 8 Phrases to Help You Keep the Peace During the Holidays
We all know we should try our best and strive for excellence in everything we do, but what happens when this desire to do well turns toxic? In this podcast, I speak to clinical psychologist Dr. Margaret Rutherford about how perfectionism can be another manifestation of depression, what to do when our desire to succeed becomes destructive, why we need to learn, rather than fear, our failures and useful techniques to overcome perfectionist tendencies. In her new book, Perfectly-Hidden Depression, Margaret notes how many perfectionists often don’t acknowledge or know that they are depressed, or that their desire to succeed in every area of their lives is a coping strategy to deal with past hurts and trauma. Many do not have what are considered “normal” traits of depression, that is feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Indeed, in a number of cases they do not know how to express uncomfortable or painful feelings and emotions, and tend to talk about what they have gone through in a very detached way. This type of perfectionism is different from striving for excellence, which is more process-orientated and encourages you to learn from your mistakes. Perfectly-hidden depression, on the other hand, is fueled by fear and shame. Toxic perfectionism tends to be goal-orientated, and sees failure as a sign of worthlessness, which puts intense pressure on someone’s performance, compelling them to constantly do better and hide their mistakes.
