Disrupting a Market is Rarely an Overnight Transformation - Peter Coffee

Disrupting a market is rarely an overnight transformation. And the right leaders see disruption as an ongoing process, not a one-time event. Peter Coffee was the first person at Salesforce with the word “platform” in his title. This was in an era where the idea of cloud computing was still in its infancy. He's spent the last 15 years helping transform Salesforce from a company that sold CRM software into one that offers an entire cloud platform designed to enable companies to offer complete solutions to their customers.MIT host Dave Anderson caught up with Peter and asked him about how he thinks the future of the workforce will shape up over the coming years.76% of workers say they are unequipped for the future of work. The traditional way to address this problem would have been to hire new talent out of college who would come in equipped with the tools and skills needed for the new landscape of the business world. But Peter feels new talent doesn't yet have the experience developed over time to really help customers solve their problems. He feels the answer to this problem is continuous education within the workforce. That's the idea behind Salesforce's Trailhead product. "We need to get back to a much more organic idea of what it means to learn and to adapt."Usually, AI projects fail because of a team's ability to implement, learn, and change the way they work. Changing the idea of ongoing skill learning requires it to be part of a company's culture. And to change that culture, you need to hire people who can change it.  Peter says, if you hire for talent, you're hiring for skills that can be taught. But if you hire for fit, you're hiring for someone who won't challenge you in your thinking. He suggests you hire someone who will challenge you."People are so much more capable than they're treated as being."Dave wonders if a lack of urgency is part of the reason more companies don't make similar changes.Too many companies focus on what they do and not on why. If they open themselves up to asking why they do what they do, then they're open to creating disruptive solutions.Companies tend to focus on what leads to being better, faster, and cheaper than their competitor. But there's a physical limit to those factors. Offering solutions to your customers opens limitless opportunities. The iPod is a great example. Steve Jobs's vision wasn't about making a digital music player, it was about putting thousands of songs in your pocket. It was about offering the whole solution. This meant the iPod could adapt and grow with each generation to be an ecosystem and not just a single purpose device.Listen to this episode to learn about:Preparing the workforce for the futureWhat it takes to be a better leaderCreating moments of transitionA new concept for continuous learning in the workplaceThe keys to giving customers a differentiating experience

Peter Coffee and Salesforce's Vision for the Platformization of Healthcare

Harry talks this week with Salesforce's vice president of strategic research, Peter Coffee. The computer-industry veteran and former tech columist says that in the era of 1) outcomes-based payments for medical care, 2) an aging patient base, and 3) ubiquitous sensors and continuous data collection, there's a huge opportunity—and financial incentive—for healthcare providers to employ technology platforms that improve the client experience. Might Salesforce end up marketing such a platform? Coffee says it's logical for the company, best known for its cloud-based customer relationship management software, to think about offering hospitals or medical service providers a configurable, CRM-style system for managing patient intake, consultations, recurring exam schedules, transportation to clinics, and the like. Coffee says Traditional healthcare organizations didn't have the insights or incentives to think about improving long-term wellness or keeping their customers (patients) happy—just the opposite, in fact. "If you didn't diet and you didn't exercise, you ended up consuming more procedures, for which they would get paid," he says. "So what you have to do is shift the point of rotation to where the patients' health and the providers' incentives are aligned with each other." That means pivoting to a data-driven model for managing service to patients—but not necessarily using centralized or concentrated systems. Coffee points out that Salesforce's architecture allows participation by thousands of third-party developers, potentially helping patientst themselves take ownership and control of their data. If insurers also bought into this larger shift, they could transform themselves from "a necessary evil of payment management" into "the primary custodian of your wellness" and a force for efficiency and savings, Coffee also tells Harry. "The people who are the payers today know a lot about where the unnecessary friction and areas of process cost are arising in the system," he notes. "You put all of these things together," Coffee says, "and you have the necessity, the opportunity, and the capacity to deliver the kind of transformational change that I think we all agree healthcare is ready to enjoy for the first time in centuries." As the cold days of November creep upon us and we fall slowly into the dreary days of winter, the WizardCast harkens back to warmer days. Days where the sun was hot, the leaves were green, and we sat down with the great Peter Coffee at MidWest Dreamin' Peter Coffee is the VP of Strategic Research at salesforce.com. He always has some delightful perspectives and stories that make you stop and think. I always walk away from a discussion with Peter both feeling smarter and dumber. It's a very unique experience. This is part 3 of our conversation with Peter Coffee. The first episode, The Fellowship of Peter Coffee WizardCast Episode 76 we talked about Salesforce Admins being the Stewards of Change. In our second episode, Experience Design with Peter Coffee WizardCast 78 we talked about experience design. In our third and final episode from our discussion at MidWest Dreamin' we are talking about Silo Busting. Silo Busting is an interesting - albeit violent - metaphor for breaking down the barriers at an organization. It's about changing our perspective and how we think. Peter uses the example of a bookstore. Don't ask: What should a bookstore do in an age of Amazon? Instead ask: In an age with Amazon, what should a bookstore be?  This changes your perspective and how we look at a problem by redefining the issue. Our jobs as Salesforce Admins and Developers are very much the same. As Peter Coffee says in this episode "Because they're not trying to do it the way you used to do it with a new tool. They're saying with this tool, this is the way to do it." (16:45) Too often do we try to follow an old process using Salesforce instead of determining the best process because we're using Salesforce. Peter Coffee was nice enough to talk with Brian and Mark on many topics. Here's part two of our conversation with Peter Coffee, VP of Strategic Research at Salesforce, from Midwest Dreamin' 2018. The topic is Experience Design. What is experience design? Experience design is the practice of designing products, processes, services, events, and environments with a focus placed on the quality of the user experience. The photo tag is "Don't pave your cow paths." Peter tells us about Boston paving over the cow paths versus designing a car-oriented transportation grid. It's the equivalent of simply taking a paper process and making it digital without taking the time to design the process around the user using the digital process. Have you ever sat down and watched how your users do their jobs? Putting yourself in the customers/user's shoes gives you insight on how you should design your process/product. As Peter mentions, most products you can buy today are pretty good compared to what we could get just a couple of decades ago. Using experience design to develop a GOOD experience will make you stand out in the crowd. Peter users cows, cars, airlines and even tasers as examples of experience design's - or lack there of - impact. This conversation was recorded live in front of an audience at Dreamforce 2017 in San Francisco.  Peter's energy and enthusiasm were in full effect even as we were setting up the podcast recorder!   I hope that you enjoy the show.  Please leave feedback on the blog at TechnologyFlows.com or tweet me directly, I am @matmorris Recorded in November 2017 This podcast interview was first published by Technologyflows.com © TechnologyFlows

In conversation with Peter Coffee (@petercoffee) at the November 2016 French Touch Dreamin' conference in Paris. Peter is VP for Strategic Research at Salesforce and his Twitter bio describes him thus; "I work with app developers and CIOs to build a global community of innovation, service and success". As you will hear, Peter is never stuck for a quote, a metric or a research finding to support his arguments that when building modern software architectures, there is no advantage in duplicating what has been done in times past. We are live at Midwest Dreamin’ 2016. We have a very special guest today, Peter Coffee, the VP for Strategic Research at Salesforce.   We had a great conversation on multiple topics including the impact of Pokemon Go, the future of our workforce, the possibility of robots taking over our jobs and the consequences of this happening. More importantly, we talk about alternatives to a whole automatic workforce. We want to thank Corinne Melchior for being our intern and holding our lovely “Appluse,” “Laugh,” and “Groan” signs.

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Technology Flows podcast. My name is Matthew Morris and I’m a Salesforce admin and MVP. Each week I’ll be brining you the voices and opinions from the world of Salesforce. This week I have for you a conversation with Peter Coffee who is the Vice President for Strategic Research at Salesforce. Many of you will recognise Peter as the host of pre-keynote conversations at many Salesforce events.  I think I am right in saying that it is his voice which announces every keynote session at Dreamforce, which he has to pre-record in the run up to the conference. If you’re interested in “the future”, then Peter is you man.  He leads the emerging trends track at Dreamforce, which from what I have seen gives a 2-3 year view into the future of Salesforce and the technology industry. Before he was hired by Marc Benioff in 2007, Peter was a technology journalist.  He’s also a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and back in the day he even wrote a book entitled How to program Java. If you want to improve your understanding of how technology and business work together and where they are leading us Peter is your man. I sat down with Peter in the press room at Dreamforce on the very last day with the hope that he could help straighten out my thoughts about all the announcements and technologies which were on show that week.  Clearly my head was still spinning as you’ll hear we made reference to the I’m a Mac adverts which ran from 2006 to about 2009, so a good 6 years ago.  Not the 2 or 3 that came out of my mouth.  Things move fast today, it seems. You can find Peter on twitter @petercoffee Please feel free to leave feedback on the blog at TechnologyFlows.com or tweet me directly, I am @matmorris. Enjoy the show...
