What are the daily habits and routines to live a level 10 life? Welcome to this week's episode of The Mind to Lead Podcast. I sat down with Andy Fell. Found of Gift631, Speaker, Coach, Facilitator and Writer. Andy has 30 years of corporate experience across the UK and Australia, 20 years of which were in senior leadership positions for the RBS, Nat West, Westpac and St.George banks. Andy loved leading large, customer-facing businesses that centred on creating high performance and inclusive cultures where people were empowered and encouraged to give of their best. Andy's expertise in communication, personal & team development lead him to found both GiFT631 and #youth4good, a social platform to provide a voice for young people with passion, energy and a desire to make a positive impact on the world. Andy's ability to build self-belief & inspire confidence in people led him to develop this programme. His purpose is to help others strive to reach their potential in a stretching, supportive and inclusive environment. He is a highly sought after speaker, coach and educator who fills his work with actionable and practical strategies. Today you will learn: Andy's 7 P process to understanding what you want for your life and business. Why Andy prefers to set "SMUUT goals" rather than "SMART goals." Why "Mozart time" is crucial for his mental clarity. The habits and routines Andy has set up to live a level 10 life. Plus much more. Questions I asked Andy: (2:50) Wow, there is a lot to unpack there. But firstly, how did you come up with the name Gift 631? (5:50) How important in your leadership training is that gratitude piece for people? (10:30) What advice would you give for somebody who wants to start a morning routine but doesn't know where to start? (13:30) How important are routines and habits as a leader? And how do you go about coaching people to achieve this? (18:59) How critical is that whole review and reflection piece? (20:22) You've talked about goals in your 1,3, 6 model. Can you talk about that and what is your winning formula? (24:45) How important is it to have great people around you? (26:00) Touching on the current climate with COVID-19. There is a lot of fear at the moment. Checking emails and news. What are your thoughts on the leadership piece, and what is your advice to leaders? (29:13) For people lacking in clarity right now what steps would you give them to help them for their business and life. (30:40) When you talk about the circle of influence, what things do you think people should be focusing on to maintain calmness and peace of mind. (34:33) In terms of self-development, do you have any tips that have worked for your personal development? (36:58) You mentioned regret at the start. How many people do you see when you're coaching that are scared to make the first step. How do you go about moving forward without fear and living life without regret? (41:01) Everybody's ideas of success are different. How do you define success in your life? (44:01) If we were about to put a billboard up for the world to see what would you put on it? I’m so happy to have my friend and fellow mom, Angela Crocker.   On this episode, Angela and I talk about her newest book, Digital Life Skills for Youth.  Kids age 11-18 have more access to technology than any other generation. We talk about what parents can do to build healthy boundaries and habits around technology.  She shares what danger signs to look out for and when kids should have access. What about the more ‘diabolical’ world of social media and apps?  Angela gives us a look inside some “Tricky Tactics” where kids can hide content from their parents. You will learn how to begin navigating the digital world for your kids, even if you don’t know where to start! About Angela Crocker Angela Crocker has been called the Ann Landers of digital living, making sense of the online life for thousands of digital citizens. Her expertise includes education technology, digital parenting, online communities, digital decluttering, content planning, and more. Angela works as an author, speaker and educator to help individuals, schools, and businesses navigate the digital life. She is the author of six books including Digital Life Skills for Youth, Declutter Your Data and The Content Planner. To learn more about the book featured on this episode, go to https://angelacrocker.com/digital_life_skills_for_youth/   Web: www.angelacrocker.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AngelaCrockerAuthor/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/angelacrocker/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelacrocker/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/AngelaCrocker Email: angela@angelacrocker.com   From the Podcast: As discussed in the podcast, here is an excerpt from Angela’s book, Digital Life Skills for Youth “To help parents figure out a healthy amount of screen time, I recommend looking at each youth’s life overall.  Think about one specific youth and consider these questions: Is the youth getting an adequate amount (approximately nine hours) of uninterrupted sleep most nights? Does the youth have social connections to peers including some close relationships (best friends)? Does the youth get an hour or more of exercise each day? Is the youth meeting their responsibilities around the home and at school?  Are chores done and homework completed? Is the youth attending school on time and prepared for class regularly? Is the youth participating in family meals and social occasions? Is the youth completing daily hygiene routines? Showers? Flossing? If the answer is yes to most of these questions, then whatever time the youth has time left over could, in my opinion, be spent on activities they choose whether online or offline.” Overall, Angela recommends keeping the lines of communication open with your child(ren). Make sure you talk to them about security, appropriate pictures, privacy, their digital footprint and more. Lastly, give yourself a break!  This topic is new and complicated and sometimes we get it wrong. It’s ok to make mistakes; this is an ever-evolving world and it new to so many of us!  Thanks for listening! It means so much to me that you listened to my podcast! If you would like to continue the conversation with me, head on over to www.facebook.com/parenting4connection  With this podcast, my intention is to build a community of parents that can have open and honest conversations about parenting without judgement or criticism.  We have too much of that! I honour each parent and their path towards becoming the best parent they can be. My hope is to inspire more parents to consider the practice of Peaceful Parenting. Sponsor Bank: Cross River Bank’s CEO Gilles Gade

Barefoot Innovation Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2018 37:29

My guest today is pioneering a crucial innovation within the innovation landscape in finance -- by providing banking services to fintechs through a platform-based financial services model known as the sponsor bank, or partner bank. In today’s episode, Gilles Gade tells the story of founding and building one of the leading sponsor banks, Cross River. Most fintech companies are licensed by their states, but are not banks. That means that every one of them has to find a bank through which to clear payments and connect to the payments system (which only banks can do). That’s not easy -- many fintechs struggle with this because banks are required by their regulators to set up complex systems for due diligence and risk management in dealing with any kind of third party that could affect the bank’s soundness or its customers’ wellbeing. Over the last decade or so, this challenge, combined with the enormous potential of the fintech market, prompted a number of banks to focus on meeting this need -- Gilles points to Webbank as leading the way. These banks have to meet a range of specialized needs including, crucially, taking responsibility for the partner fintechs’ compliance with regulatory requirements. Gilles describes founding Cross River in 2008, when the financial crisis had curtailed many kinds of consumer and small business credit, and talks about how new companies emerged to fill the gap, with either new kinds of products, or new ways of creating access to old products. He points to fintech lenders -- like Affirm, Lending Club, and Sofi -- and also to payments-focused companies like Coinbase, Transferwise and ActiveHours, as innovators that are opening up more inclusive finance. Gilles is especially thoughtful on regulatory issues, which he calls “by far” the biggest challenge for the fintech world. He emphasizes that the single biggest difficulty is sheer uncertainty, as technology change outstrips traditional regulatory change mechanisms. Gilles cites the Madden v. Midland litigation, with its controversy over national versus state interest rates, and the “valid when made” doctrine, as issues that need clarity so that lenders can build stable business models. Gilles also has thoughts on the Comptroller of the Currency’s proposal for creating a special fintech charter (note that we recorded this discussion during the tenure of Keith Noreika as Acting Comptroller of the Currency). Gilles laments that we have no fewer than 12 federal regulators involved in these issues (I myself have actually counted twice that many, directly and indirectly involved). Like me, he’s optimistic about the innovation efforts of the regulatory agencies -- he mentions the OCC in particular -- and of congressional leaders like Congressmen Patrick McHenry (R-NC) and Gregory Meeks (D-NY) -- both of whom, I’m delighted to say, are going to be guests on our show. Cross River’s emphasis on policy issues has led it to a number of leadership initiatives, including creating the Online Lending Policy Institute, which sponsors an outstanding Online Lending Policy Summit in Washington each fall, and also sponsoring the policy programming at the LendIt conference, which is coming up next month -- I’ll be there, by the way, and I hope you will too! More on Cross River and Gilles Gade Video about the bank Gille Gade: Gilles Gade is a founder of Cross River Bank (CRB) and has served as its Chairman, President and CEO since its inception in 2008 as an innovation-driven state-chartered bank and a provider of fully compliant financial solutions to the marketplace lending and payments sectors. Gilles has over 20 years of experience in investment banking and venture capital including as Co-Founder and Managing Director of Chela Technology Partners and Chela Internet Ventures, a boutique investment bank and venture fund focusing on emerging technologies and telecommunications; technology investment banker at Barclays Capital; and FIG investment banker at Bear Stearns. He started his career in 1990 at Citicorp Venture Capital, after graduating from the MBA Institute IMIP (Groupe IPESUP) in Paris with an MS in International Management. More for our listeners Our upcoming shows will include Nerd Wallet CEO Tim Chen; Michael Wiegand, who heads the Gates Foundation’s work on financial services for the poor; and the CEO’s of both Eastern Bank and Radius Bank. Finance and the Fourth Industrial Revolution: Tim Pawlenty, CEO of Financial Services Roundtable

Barefoot Innovation Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2018 46:50

Today’s guest is a familiar name and face for everyone who follows U.S. politics. He is Tim Pawlenty, CEO of the Financial Services Roundtable. Tim was previously Governor of Minnesota and became well-known to most of us when he ran for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. He’s been a prominent voice on public policy for many years. He was also a speaker on a panel I moderated last fall at Money 2020 on financial innovation and regulation. We decided to continue that conversation back in Washington at his office at the Roundtable, which is the trade association representing the largest U.S. banks and financial companies. Tim is one of the most thoughtful people we’ve had on the show, with perspective on all the issues and strong opinions, clearly expressed. He shared his predictions for how fintech will, and won’t, change banking, including its competitive structure, and including the likelihood of rising competition for the customer’s trust. He talks about the big tech companies competing with banks not in terms of whether it will happen -- he thinks that’s a given -- but rather when and how, and how that will ultimately be regulated. He has thoughts on the respective strengths and weaknesses of banks versus companies like Amazon or Apple. He thinks cybersecurity is the top challenge and talks about the foundational, structural difficulty of taking the internet -- which was designed to be open and distributed -- and trying to plug its security gaps with patches (he cites a Roundtable event where Steve Wozniak offered somewhat discouraging advice on this). Tim is an optimist that technology will make financial services vastly better for most people. He’s also an optimist about banks and fintechs finding synergies and increasingly partnering. He thinks a few -- a very few -- fintechs, will change the world. He’s less optimistic about U.S. financial regulators getting good at truly coordinating as technology changes finance. As he puts it, the regulatory structure is horizontal, not vertical. That will make it hard to develop the harmonized thinking, and actual standards, that could help the system move forward. Big banks will play an enormous role in shaping the digital transformation of finance. More than small banks, they have the resources to be innovation leaders. More than fintechs, they have both resources and also expertise in how to be regulated companies, which takes some learning. More than either, they’ll be going head-to-head with big tech entrants into finance. At the same time, more than any of these other players, big banks are hard to change, by virtue of sheer size and history and also the legacy of being, in some ways, creatures of regulation. They are often on the defense on regulatory and political and public concerns about banking. Tim Pawlenty says banking is the “plumbing” of the economy, and therefore needs to work. I would add that big banks are the main pipes. When they do innovation well, their many millions of customers will benefit -- most financial consumers today are served by these large institutions. If they do innovation badly, or if the regulatory process impedes the move to modernize them, the future will be a whole lot more complicated. As he says, the plumbing has to work. Here are other episodes we’ve done with innovation leaders at large banks -- Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and US Bank. More on Tim Pawlenty Tim Pawlenty is President and CEO of the Financial Services Roundtable, which represents the leading financial service companies in the United States. He previously served as Governor of the State of Minnesota (2003-2011), overseeing a $50 billion biennial budget, 30,000 employees and over 20 agencies and departments. As governor, he was also responsible for disaster preparedness and response, appointment of judges, and serving as Commander-In- Chief of Minnesota’s National Guard. His work as governor included promoting international business opportunities through trade missions to nine countries. He chaired the State Board of Investment, which addressed more than $60 billion in investments. His education, health care and energy initiatives were widely cited as among the most innovative in the nation. Mr. Pawlenty served as Chair of the National Governors Association (2007-2008), Chair of the Education Commission of the States (2008-2010), and Chair of the Midwest Governors Association (2006-2007). From 1986 to 2000, Mr. Pawlenty practiced law in the areas of criminal prosecution, civil litigation and appeals. He was also Vice President of Corporate Development for Wizmo, an early stage technology services company. He has been a board member of numerous companies. Mr. Pawlenty served in the Minnesota House of Representatives (1993-2003) where he was elected Majority Leader by his colleagues (1999-2003). He received a B.A. from the University of Minnesota with Phi Beta Kappa and PhiKappa Phi honors. He received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School. Become a member today and get immediate access to targeted education and a sisterhood of women who are just as dedicated as you are and who are here on this journey with you! Become a member today --> http://bizwomenrock.com/elitemembership   *** Most of the questions I receive from the amazing women of the Biz Women Rock community can be distilled down to this one question: How do I make more money? My answer: Get more clients/customers to pay for your product or services. How to I get more clients/customers? My answer: First step: build a community of individuals who know, LOVE and trust you! How do I grow my community? (or “build my following?”) My answer: Do any ONE of these 7 things today!   1. Ask Your Current Community Members to Share This simple call to action is so often overlooked! Get onto the platforms you currently have – your Facebook Group, your email list, your Instagram profile, your podcast, your blog, your YouTube channel – and ask your community members to share about you! This can sound like… [Podcast] “If you loved this episode and got value out of it, I would appreciate you sharing it with one other person who you think would benefit from it!” [Facebook Group] “Hey ladies! I am loving these conversations in here! If you know of other amazing business women who would benefit from being a part of this incredible group, go invite them to join! Just give them this link! Together, we can ROCK the world!” [Blog] “If you enjoyed this article, go ahead and share it with others who would benefit!” Get the idea? Those who love you and are already a part of your community are super happy to share about you…they just need reminding every now and again and to be given an EASY way to do it! 2. Pitch Yourself to Be a Guest on a Podcast As a podcaster, I have an inside view on how POWERFUL this medium is for visibility! You don’t have to be a podcaster to be featured on other podcasts. Just work backwards…what podcasts are out there that attract your ideal avatar? Do you happen to have any connections with any of those hosts? If yes, go ask them if they’re open to new guests on their show and that you’d love the opportunity to provide value to their audience. If not, start sending some emails and messages to pitch the hosts. (extra resource: my good friend Jessica Rhodes of Interview Connections has some great info on how to pitch to get yesses! http://www.interviewconnections.com/). And think outside the box…I was just a guest on my good friend Diane Daniels’ podcast Weight Loss Nation (http://theweightlossnation.com), sharing my story of overcoming food addiction and how I achieve ultimate health and fitness happiness. It’s totally not my usual topic of conversation and doesn’t really have anything to do directly with business (my normal “zone of genius”), but a) I really felt like my story could be valuable to her community and b) there may be high driving business women who are listening! As my friend Danny Peña of Gamertag Radio says, “you never know who’s listening!” 3. Write a Killer Email/Blog Post and Post It On Social Media Visibility is important…marketing is the lifeblood of your business. But CONTENT IS STILL KING. Meaning, you can shout all you want into the world, but if you don’t have good content for others to read, listen to or watch when their eyes point your way, all of it is for nothing. So, take some time to write a fantastic email and blog post (by the way…efficiency tip…one can always be turned into the other). Send it out and share it on social media. If you mention others in it, tag them to bring them into to conversation! Maybe even tap on the shoulders of a few community members to have them share it (go back to #1!). 4. Personally Share Relevant Content With Individuals Who Would Benefit When you write an awesome blog post or create a great podcast episode or upload a cool YouTube video, personally reach out to a few people who you know would directly benefit from it. Maybe someone in your community just posted in your group about a challenge they’re having and your content addresses that issue. Reach out and share it with them, letting them know you thought it would be helpful in light of their recent post. 5. Reach Out to a Media Source in Your Niche and Offer Yourself as a Resource Think of 2-3 media sources in your niche who attract your ideal avatar. Reach out to them and offer yourself as a resource. Maybe that means offering to write helpful blog posts or talking to them about offering your podcast or YouTube channel as a regular resource for their readers. Maybe that means bringing them onto YOUR platform so you can give them exposure. This is a strategic ways to get a lot of eyes on you! 6. Do a Facebook LIVE! Think of the top 3 questions your avatar asks you all the time. Answer each of these 3 questions and boom! You’ve got yourself a 3 part Facebook Live series! Get in front of the camera and share your knowledge! Do this from your Facebook Page and/or your personal Facebook profile because when you do, people will watch and share! Facebook Live tips: 1) write in the copy of the Facebook Live what the video is all about…I’m not going to watch your video if I can’t see what it’s about and whether it’s relevant to me or not. 2) Write AND SAY a call to action! Give people a link so they can find out more about you or get access to something that you’re talking about! If not a link, tell them to comment or sent you a direct message! 3) Do NOT hesitate to get in front of the camera. Still sweaty from a workout? Hair all messy? No makeup? Who cares! Get over it and press record…your community WANTS to see you REAL. (I know my good friend Dana Goldstein of Chic Flicks would agree - http://chicflicks.com). 7. Connect With Those Who Follow Other Influencers in Your Niche (ie. your ideal avatar) Go into Instagram (or Twitter or Facebook or LinkedIn…whatever you like). Go follow someone else who is an influencer in your industry. Someone else who has a brand that attracts your ideal avatar. Then, check out who follows THEM. Go down the list and start following those who look like they would also love your brand. Note: While this may seem a little “smarmy,” it’s not. Not as long as you are simply CONNECTING with these folks…not directly spamming them. Not putting them on a list and then sending crap to them they never asked for. All you’re doing is strategically opening up the opportunity to get to know them better on social media! For the first time in Why I Social history, this week's podcast features not one, but two guests! Cody and Katie Stevenson.  The pair is a married couple who I've had the pleasure of getting to know (as well as host at my house for a BBQ earlier this summer). They're perhaps best known for some of their great travel stories which caught my attention early on.  Both are proficient in social media as a relationship building platform. Most recently, Cody launched his own podcast (Big Rigs and Pancakes) which focuses on conversations and getting to know people. It's the anti-social, Why I Social, and it's fantastic.  This Week On Why I Social, Cody, Katie and I talk about: Starting a podcast Traveling across the country ...and of course, how they met. Get To Know Cody and Katie Twitter: @TheCodyVision (Cody) @KatieS914 (Katie) @brppodcast (Podcast) As always, share YOUR thoughts on the latest episode using #WhyISocial. Episode 55: The "Springing into Questions!" Podcast – As promised for this episode, Gary and Gene focus on questions sent in by podcast listeners. There's a brief discussion up front touching on numerology, music, movies… but the conversation VERY quickly turns to A Course in Miracles, and of course, forgiveness. Our first question for Gary concerns forgiving family members, especially when the grievances have existed for a long time. Gary's answer involves the necessarily repetitive nature of the forgiveness process, and how the Holy Spirit is always working with us behind the scenes, whether we are consciously aware of it or not. Gene adds some comments about the "split mind" being healed a little bit, every time we forgive. Next question asks for Gary to explain the Course's position regarding dreams and their interpretation. The answer involves the Course's teaching that we understand that recognition of the fact that we are dreaming should be our true goal. Our next listener question asks about feelings of depression and even suicidal thoughts, both of which seem to have become more intense since studying the Course. Gary's response reminds us that these kinds of thoughts and feelings always come from the ego, and it's critically important to consistently recognize this as such. The Holy Spirit will always offer a happy replacement for any negative thought the ego puts in our way. Gary's closing thoughts remind us to always look at "the big picture" that the Course is showing us, rather than focusing on the little obstacles with which the ego would attempt to distract us. Episode 53: The "Questions for Gary at Christmas!" Podcast – As promised in the last show (Ep. 52), Gary and Gene devote an entire podcast to questions submitted by listeners; some just recently, and some from the archives. The first several brief questions come from the same listener: How do we know when the ego has been undone? When the Course says to "forgive the world", does that mean we are to renounce the world? Does the ego love the body…or wish to kill it? And, how can I see beyond the body when I am in physical pain, or even emotional distress? The next question comes from a listener in Argentina who asks, "If I get healed in regard to a problem I'm having, will I simply find another problem in 'the script' that will be just as painful?" Next question asks: If God is in communication with me all the time, why don't I hear God? Why don't I feel God? Next: A question regarding something Pursah said about massage techniques. (Gene's lovely wife Helen will enjoy hearing this one!) Final question (for this episode) asks about increasing one's ability to forgive, but perhaps in doing so, minimizing one's ability to quiet the mind: What is the best balance between focusing on forgiveness opportunities, and quieting the mind through meditation? Then, unexpectedly, the podcast receives two very special guests! (You'll have to listen to find out who.) Gary's closing comments reflect on the Course teaching that we should all begin to make things different this year, by making everything "all the same."
